This was the Sonic cartoon I was familiar with. One of many animated series that never had an actual Ending to the story. One of the stories that created my mistrust of animated narrative series which still lingers.
Yes, western animated narrative series regularly get canceled without a true ending. I think it mostly revolves around money. It's sadly just a byproduct of the business of making children's programming. No matter how successful the show is, you'll generally only have a 5 year window at best to capitalize on the property before the audience ages out and moves on. Knowing exactly when, and how, to end a narrative that was purpose built for a 5-8 year old demo is a tall order by itself. It's even more difficult when the shots are being called by bean counters with nothing but dollar signs in their eyes. At the end of the day, maybe it's just hard to convince adults that children do honestly care about compelling competent story telling.
Other than Avatar, I can't name another Western animated series that has a proper ending. Maybe The Clone Wars, but that took years and multiple cancellations.

Man, I have vague memories of this, but when you spell out the lore, it's clear the writers were given COMPLETE free reign to change/add to backstories as they wished. I want to see a battle to the death between the person who wrote the original Western Sonic The Hedgehog Bible and the Loremaster of Sonic Underground.
According to Polygon's video "Every Sonic game is blasphemous | Unraveled", the original Sonic bible was insane and completely disregarded immediately.
I kinda love reading and hearing about how chaotic the production of Sonic Underground was. The new backstories were different but very much needed, as the Sonic video games don't go into Sonic's backstory at all. Despite all of its chaos and quirks, Sonic Underground needed to exist. It's contributed more to the franchise than most games and shows.
In the Archie Comics iteration of Sonic the Hedgehog, there was an ongoing storyline titled, “Mobius: 25 Years Later,” where the main characters were (as the title suggests) were down the road. In that storyline, Sonic and Sally had married and assumed the throne as king and queen, and had a pair of twins together. The twins were named Sonia and Manik, but they looked nothing like their Sonic Underground counterparts: Manik looked like his dad but with a gap in his teeth (and relished being a prince), while Sonia took more after her mother (and thensome).
What was so odd about the show? I can admit that it dealt with themes that were a little more adult than what we were used to seeing as kids but it was a really entertaining watch on the mornings before school
@Rekka09 I couldn't stomach watching it as a kid. I watched as a adult to really see what it was about. The sisters voice was terrible, songs were bad, sonics model was weird, the henchmen were the worse, animation wasn't as good as Satam, Chao emerald was disappointing, the list goes on. The original sonic cartoon was odder but in a much more enjoyable way, this was bad odd that developed a cult following later on. I'd personally like to see it concluded though because I hate unfinished shows and I love sonic in general.
@@Phantomgto85thanks for responding dude. For me, it holds a special place in my heart because of the more mature themes it explored (feelings of abandonment, alienation (when it came to Havok) etc. I will say that the music was not the best I've ever heard lol but it was entertaining for me and my brother as we got ourselves together for school in the morning at our grandfather's house. Maybe it's more nostalgia for me at this point? 🤔 I liked the idea of Sonic having siblings and their dynamic with each other, especially with Havok being the odd man out despite being a trio of anthropomorphic hedgehogs on a cartoon. It really does suck that they didn't give it a finale but that was par for the course with a lot of our cartoons back in the 90s
@Rekka09 the sibling stuff was the best part imo. Besides it being a Sonic show, that's what drew me back to it in my adult years. I definitely get what you're saying and glad you have such fond memories of it. 90's up till early 00's had the best cartoons imo.
Franchise Killer: *It was the last Sonic cartoon to be produced by DIC Entertainment,* as they lost the Sonic TV rights not long after the show ended and left the West without a Sonic cartoon for 15 years (barring Sonic X, a Japanese production exported overseas by 4Kids Entertainment). When Sonic Boom came around, it ended up being co-produced in-house by Sega of America. Sadly, not even that was enough and since that series got screwed by CN, all Sonic animation has been in short-form and made largely in-house. Until 2022: when Sega partnered with Man of Action Studios and WildBrain *(the current owner of a majority of DIC's back catalogue)* to produce Sonic Prime for Netflix.
For me the timing couldn't have been worse to even attempt to see this show on broadcast. I did encounter the tie-in promotion at Denney's, but it was swept away by the oncoming tide that was the Sonic Adventure redesign. A redesign that not even Archie Sonic could avoid.
It was all Andy Heyward's fault he stole the company away from its French founder and wound up burning his bridges with Saban Entertainment, one of DiC's original partners on some projects (Kidd Video, Inspector Gadget, etc.) before they separated and Saban went on to have success with the Power Rangers...

Sometime in the 2000s this was on around 6 AM while I was getting ready for school. I only ever saw 1 episode, and it was about Robotnik using a robot hairdresser to hypnotize clients into revealing secret information. I was a slightly older kid at that point, and I wrote the show off as being weird and never tuned in again. Weird is still memorable, though.
Yes, if Sonic Underground is anything, it's memorable. And if it's weird, that's good. You can't find a good show that's actually new and interesting these days.
@@nes96 Forgotten by who exactly? Also, you can't give me a Sonic show that's not cheesy. It's a kids' show. Obviously it's cheesy. And at least in Sonic Underground they don't put down other people for not having friends, write the most predictable plot in the universe, create stupid versions of Sonic game plots, or make terrible jokes every five seconds.
I've watched Sonic Underground right after watching Sonic SatAM. It wasn't as good but still far from bad and it was a real bummer that it ended basically nowhere. In most episodes, Sonic just helped the citizens and Robotnik wasn't even aware of that. Only in like five or six last episodes Robotnik actually started to pay attention and actively fight against the rebellion - and then... there were just no more episodes.
You know... I kind of felt the same when I was a child. I think it was because of the way the story and setting was being described. You basically couldn't enjoy some of the things that could make life more enjoyable. Like laughter and music and etc. And if you did these things then you were turned into a robot. Watching the characters being lined up and turned into a robot for simply trying to enjoy life was sad to watch as a child. I felt like they didn't deserve their punishment. And my active imagination would wonder "What if this was real? Would I be turned into a robot too?" So silly little me managed to scare myself. Good thing I didn't stumble upon the comics at the time.

Poor Ben Hurst. He really tried to make Sonic Underground Special. He originally tried to make it into Sat Am Season 3 by having it set after a five year time skip with a Band made up of Bunnie, Antoinne, and Tails in the background to the REAL plot to give DICkheads the music leaning they wanted but they INSISTED on something new.
I have a deep affection for this series, despite its quirky and humorous nature. While some of the animation and dialogue may have failed, I found these imperfections to be part of the show's charm, and I still found myself chuckling at times. The editing could have been better, but with each episode, the series showed significant improvements. My favorite episodes were the ones that delved into the lifestyles and backstories of each character. I relate most to Sonia's character, as I also have two older brothers. Even though she can come across as pretentious at times, she deeply cares for her brothers and is willing to sacrifice her happiness for theirs. Meanwhile, Manic, the youngest sibling, is mischievous but has a heart of gold. While some viewers might have a negative first impression of the series, I find it endearing and enjoyable despite its flaws. Unfortunately, the series never received a proper ending, but with Satam recently returning after many years with fan support, there is still hope that the show will receive the send-off it deserves. And who knows maybe someday somebody will bring the show as an indie animated project. I would for one like to see that and I think that it be great.

As someone who's been watching all the Sonic cartoons, I always wonder why there's never been this Sonic crossover with all the Sonic cartoons coming together for the first time like Turtles Forever & Teen Titans vs TTG style
I still wished that they haven't left Sonic Undergrond as a cliffhanger at the end of that series because we never got to see Sonic, Sonia and Manic reunited with their mother Queen Aleena as well as the prophecy fulfilled of defeating Robotnik once and for all.
I found out about this show through Netflix with my sister and never looked back! I love this show and I wish Sonia and Manic would've been added to the canon... Plus, the ending deserved so much better!
What’s even worse is the Archie Sonic universe comic was going to have its 50th issue be a proper finale to Sonic underground, but they chickened out and instead did a story about metal Sonic (which wasn’t that good).
For years, a dvd of this series was the only piece of Sonic media I had consumed. I was confused to hear that Manic the Hedgehog has never been a playable character in a game
The reason Sonic Underground never got a comic book conclusion might be because of the lawsuit between Ken Penders and Archie Comics. One of the rules in the lawsuit states that no character in a Sonic comic can have family members that weren't already introduced in the comics
Somewhere in Ruckersville, Virginia, a "high functioning" autistic Bigfoot got confused about why that show existed, after noticing his lack of experience in musical instruments.

It's more frustrating that the story didn't end in any other media (unlike SatAM which kept going on in comics, technically) than the fact that the series was mid at best. PD: since you're on a trend of making reviews from 90s videogame-based shows, you should totally make one about the Ruby Spears' Mega Man animated series and that weird series that featured characters from the game Narc.
No point allowing it. If it's successful there's a risk of creating a fandom of splintering storyline that only complicates the production side, if there's NO risk of that then the audience is not big enough to jsutify not filling that release schedule with something that even more people actually want.
Word Of God: According to executive producer Robby London, *the series never had a "final episode" planned or even discussed.* This was because they were uncertain about the number of episodes or seasons the series would have before being cancelled. If they were to create a "final episode" and then additional episodes were ordered, it would pose significant challenges for the writers in terms of continuing the story seamlessly. Hence, the approach they took was to craft each episode as a standalone adventure (without a linear storyline: which made it easier to keep producing episodes without interruption.
I think not a fine enough point was made in this video on the fact that Jaleel White voiced ALL THREE siblings, which to this day seems like the most absurd cost-cutting measure of them all. White is a great actor and a great voice-actor, don't get me wrong, but he's simply not good ENOUGH to convincingly voice three siblings who almost always appear together and constantly have lengthy dialogues with one another -- especially when one of them is a girl! His Manik wasn't a bad effort, but his Sonia seriously just sounded like Myrtle Urkel. It's honestly comedy gold listening to it nowadays.

Nothing more annoying than getting invested into a TV program/cartoon. Then for the TV channel showing the series not to finish showing the whole thing. Encounter that a few times over the years. Sonic Underground did have a great songs though, but the cartoon was badly produced because of DiC wanting to change the premise of Sonic, instead of making another season of Sonic SatAM! Even Kids WB didn’t really about airing the cartoon that they put the show on 6am! That’s a terrible time slot, that’s like the same reason Sailor Moon failed in syndication! Because they wanted the show to fail, with airing the cartoon way too early for kids to watch!
This was great for covering the background of the series but how did you do an episode about Sonic Underground without playing the theme song. Its terrible, its great, and it will never permanently leave your head once you hear it
I think something that would have made the story even a tiny bit better would have been that the Queen was out searching for her long lost Husband/the Triplets Father, and once they were reunited they would form the Council of Five and defeat Robotnik once & for all, it might have helped even a small amount if they did something like That with the story.

As a young kid I loved this show. To date I still have a soft spot for the show and I think the premise had a lot of potential; it was just poorly executed. I think its biggest flaw was that it had a set starting point (Queen Aleena being forced to give up her children for the sake of fulfilling a prophecy) and a set end point (Sonic and his siblings reuniting with their mother and bringing down Robotnik), but there wasn't any set plan for how to get from point A to point B. This left the show feeling more like a standalone episode of the week type of show masquerading as a show with a continuous narrative, rather than a show that actually had a continuous narrative that would playout over the episodes. I'm guessing they did this so that they could try and keep the show going for as long as possible, rather than having a set number of episodes for when the show would end. I would love for this show to get a reboot, but with the story being fully planned out in advance... ... ... and maybe cutting out the songs, they weren't great, or at the very least make the songs be better written, tie in better with the episodes, and actually be used to move the episodes forward, rather than feeling like a "and now we shall stop the episode so we can have a song" kind of moment. Even if the show is never rebooted, which I very much doubt it will be, I'd love for Manic and Sonia to be brought more into the Sonic franchise. I wouldn't even mind if SEGA scrapped the idea of them being royalty; it'd just be nice to see them in future games, cartoons, movies etc. They technically could bring them into the new live-action movies considering I don't think we have any real backstory for Sonic from before he was adopted by Longclaw.
There needs to be a push to bring back Saturday Morning Cartoons... There is so much support for it from people, like myself, who loved the tradition. Really, they could even just take the best Saturday Morning blocks from the past, commercials and all, and start there.

The twins were named Sonia and Manik, but they looked nothing like their Sonic Underground counterparts: Manik looked like his dad but with a gap in his teeth (and relished being a prince), while Sonia took more after her mother (and thensome).
Out of all the Sonic cartoons I have seen so far. I consider Underground the oddest of the bunch.
Everyone does
What was so odd about the show?

That Denny's plush was my first Sonic toy.
Even though they were likely in different studios during recording... it's surreal Jaleel did a show with Garry Chalk, Sam Vincent and Brian Drummond.

I was such a fan of DIC as a child its so upsetting to hear how scummy the company was
It was all Andy Heyward's fault he stole the company away from its French founder and wound up burning his bridges with Saban Entertainment, one of DiC's original partners on some projects (Kidd Video, Inspector Gadget, etc.) before they separated and Saban went on to have success with the Power Rangers...

Bait used to be believable…
Sometime in the 2000s this was on around 6 AM while I was getting ready for school. I only ever saw 1 episode, and it was about Robotnik using a robot hairdresser to hypnotize clients into revealing secret information. I was a slightly older kid at that point, and I wrote the show off as being weird and never tuned in again. Weird is still memorable, though.
I completely forgot that episode existed until I read this comment
Yes, if Sonic Underground is anything, it's memorable. And if it's weird, that's good. You can't find a good show that's actually new and interesting these days.

Sonic Underground is gonna be revived by us!!
The world may have forgotten Sonic Underground, but I have not! I never finished the show because it scared the bajeezus out of me.
This scared you .... ?
What scared you, exactly?
@orinanime The quality. Or more specifically, lack thereof

The reason Sonic Underground never got a comic book conclusion might be because of the lawsuit between Ken Penders and Archie Comics. One of the rules in the lawsuit states that no character in a Sonic comic can have family members that weren't already introduced in the comics

I remembered this cartoon, I just couldn't get over how they cloned Sonic, the prince thing & that it wasn't SatAM.
I remember when this show came out being so mad that this wasn’t a continuation of the Sonic Saturday morning series.
I long for my children but I have to wait. To act too soon could seal their fate.

This is the first I am hearing about it. Doesn't seem like I missed anything.

With the internet you find out now it finished. Or with Sonic Underground there is no end, that is hard on any fan.

It would be fun to see a video on Fantomcat cartoon, made by cosgrove
