That was nice of the wife to help :) neat looking hat bowl. It always amazes me to see you take things off the lathe re-glue and spin it around, every time I do anything like that I can never center it well and lose more wood.
woodturningjohn She pitches in when needed. FYI, anytime I change the axis or flip the wood around, I do lose some. Hopefully, it's where the impact will not be noticed. Alan
Hi alan When you glue the parts in the missing segments you only have to apply two fine line of glue at the ends of the parts where they fit the other parts. Use a small plastic bottle with a very narrow nozzle. This way you won't have to clean the glue. Don't worry about the strength of the glue. Make a sample and watch how good it is. As always... I enjoy watching and learning from your videos. Shachar
שחר נאור I have used the technique you suggested. I still have squeeze out. Therefore, I still prefer white glue and to clean the joint. It's easier to say not to worry than to actually not worry. These were large segments with small gaps, so I choose to cover the entire piece and clean. However, I still appreciate the suggestion and your confidence that the glue lines are sufficient. Alan
Great video. Wish I could be there for the demo. Hope you include the table saw set up and instructions on how to make it in the demo. Could you make a video on the saw set up and sanding block for RUclips? Where do you get the jig for the open segments.
David Fisher for the table saw setup search for Jerry Bennett. He has plans and a video on how to make it. The open segment template I used was also designed by Jerry. Alan
Alan -- I love Bennett's 'Wedgie' sled. I also built a segment 'Stomper' ( woodturnerpro.com/content.php?r=188-segment-stomper ) which made assembly a lot easier.
Gerald Jensen Total agreement on the Wedgie sled but I'm not as happy with my Stomper. I used the Stomper's Longworth chuck with one of the glue ups. but between that one and previous glue ups (horizontal), glue got on the bolts and ran down between the disks. I plan to upgrade the bolts to at least minimize the glue build up on the bolts. I'm still working on a better solution to the other glue problem when using it on the stomper that's better than some parchment paper on top. Any suggestions? Alan
As Wood Turns Fearing the same thing, when I made my Stomper, I cut the Longworth-style disks out of plastic (two 15-inch cutting boards from WalMart). I also use plastic washers (the kind they use to attach rigid foam insulation) on the bolts. So far, I haven't had any problems ... glue doesn't stick to the plastic and cleanup is pretty easy.

Beautiful video, Alan.
The Bowler / bowl looks great. No matter what you as you used in the summer always comes off air.

Nice project Alan, and a very effective and unique result. This design might go down well in the City (London). ;)
Take care
Mike

Hi Alan! That was quite some work with the open segments, I am glad you had help! Very nice technique! Thank you for sharing! Daniel
Daniel Vilarino I recruit her whenever I can for open segments - A lot of detail work to be done quickly.
You're welcome.
Alan
Excellent...
Cheers...

The "Master" strikes again! Very nice project. Does the hat fit your head? I've seen cowboy hats made by turning. Amazing work. Best regards.
Richard Katzman My head is too fat for this hat. :)
