- Me and porter ventured to a high mountain lake here in northern AZ in search of a new personal best fish. I had 2 of them to beat and he had a first to catch! Did we do it?
Northern AZ is a great place to be especially when the weather is heating up in the valley. This lake is absolutely loaded with fish.
Allegedly there are even some monsters in here, so that is what we will be targeting.

Lower lake Mary for anyone who wants to know, I caught some nice pike this week in upper lake and a 4 lb bass, I don't fish for trout very often, that spot is full of people on weekends

@@TheFishinMagician20 Supposedly it's not so bad. You fillet them like any other fish, but you'll end up with Y-bones in the fillet that are not difficult to remove after they're cooked. I've never had the chance to fish for them though.
Here in Arizona you're required to immediately kill or release the pike you catch, presumably to make sure anglers aren't moving around apex predator fish in a condition where they could reproduce, which would be bad news for any waters where they aren't already present. So if you intend to keep them, you better bring a cooler instead of a stringer. That's the one thing I think would make things difficult.

You should! Its guaranteed at least 10+ pike if you know what your doing.
If that’s lower lake Mary I’d recommend throwing those pike on the bank if you wanna keep on catching trout there upper lake Mary however I always out the pike back they have some monster pike you’ll definitely catch a pb there

Brings back memorys, I grow up in Flag. Fished all the lakes around there and hunted elk all around stonemen lake. Quail hunting around Kingmen was alalways good. 86 COCO

a little tip for pike in az, go to Munds Park, caught two nice pike about the size of the last one about a month ago in Odell Lake. Golf courses are stocked too, gotta be sneaky though. Goodluck boys
I'm surprised the water came down even more since the last time we were there. I thought this last few Winters would have fixed that problem but apparently not. Maybe they let it out for other reasons. I was fishing that Lake with 2 lb test 😂

I have some GREAT pike swim bait lures. They absolutely love them. They're the Storm wildeye live perch lure. They come in bags of 4 or 5 and they have the tail that spins. That and a steel leader works great! Hold the pike down by it's eyes to avoid those teeth

Wish they could find a way to keep water in that lake. It’s so very productive for trout, but they can’t survive with how they lose water. I could just imagine a fish surviving 3 years in the could truly be something to behold. Not a pike guy, wish they weren’t there, but I’ve hooked a couple of tanks that ended up biting through my tippet
Love Lake Mary! Well, I have only fished at Upper Lake Mary, Lower was completely dried up at the time(2022)! It was a big green grassy field then, I would watch elk & mule deer graze out there from the parking lot right by the dam.
I caught a 30lb northern pike in I believe July of that year, iirc, in Upper Lake Mary. There's video of it on my channel! It hit a big Strike King KVD squarebill crankbait(chartreuse w/black back) on 30lb Spiderwire braid (which broke!). I had to jump down & grab it with both hands!! I have caught sooooo many pike & walleyes there, big ones too, got LOTS of videos of em, check em out! There are also still pics on my community page.
I was doing the #vanlife thing & just traveling & fishing every day... In the wintertime I'd stay down at Lake Havasu. Aaahhh, that was the life!

If you just wanna catch your limit? Powerbait on the bottom, work and bobber, even try mini jigging a spacebug or any small soft plastic

I'm annoyed how the Game and Fish Department wants to remove all the pike from the last few lakes where they persist.
I kinda get it, upper has walleye and pike but used to have more gamefish like perch, more crappie, etc. the pike eat everything and diminish. The thing is tho unless they electroshock the lake they’ll never be able to remove them
Small pike need to grow up. They’re too bony. Taste good but many small bones. They’ll never be as easy as a trout for eating. But Arizona this surprises me. Where’s the Cold water come summer? Off the higher mountains?

I follow the rules in the law book. This is a put and take reservoir for trout. I have no issue taking them home

what do you mean by that? We were letting them swim off but they would just get stuck in the weeds. Had to give them some distance so they could get back to open water
@@TheFishinMagician20 If you don’t know what I mean, check out the channels you are aspiring to be and watch how the real dudes treat the fish they catch and release…NWFS, NDYakAngler, Tenkara Addict, Jon B., One Rod…..and on and on etc. They don’t drag them up on shore, squeeze them, and manhandle them. If you wanna reach the next level as a content creator in this segment maybe it’s something to think about, no?
