Born and raised in MI. I moved to Florida 16 years ago. I’m seriously considering moving back. I wish I had the best of both worlds like I use to. I had a vacation home for years in Florida. Times have changed and so has my pocket book.
I moved from Northern Michigan to South Florida 40 years ago. I have watched Florida go from a nice place to live to a 💩hole. It is seriously overcrowded. People are rude and driving is taking your life in your hands. Because of traffic, it can take an hour or more just to go a short distance. Going shopping can be a nightmare too, finding a place to park and then long lines at the checkout. Even though there are no state income taxes property taxes are high. Homeowners insurance, if you can get it, is outrageous. There are also hurricanes. If your area is close to where one hits, and you are lucky enough that your home doesn’t have serious damage, you can expect to be without power anywhere from one to two weeks, during the hottest time of the year. If your home does have damage, good luck finding an honest contractor to repair it. Also, if you were able to get insurance, good luck getting the insurance company to pay the full amount of your claim. Crime is also rampant. You have to keep your doors locked and windows shut at all times. And as you mentioned there are no seasons. No matter how many Christmas’ you spend there it will never feel like Christmas. I began spending more time at my place in Northern Michigan during Covid and intend to move back this year. After I sell my house in Florida I won’t care if I ever go there again!
Thank you for taking the time to type this out. I’ve heard similar things from others. Im not sure where you live in Northern Michigan, but if you ever in Petoskey stop in!
I live in South Florida and also have a place in Northern Michigan. Although our property taxes aren't the cheapest, the much larger reason that we do not pay state income tax is tourism (thank you Disney!) Sales taxes and tourism taxes fund the state's budget handsomely. I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about Northern Michigan and it's real estate market.
HA! I lived in Florida for a year (June 2015/June 2016) as much as I loved there (Tampa) truly a tropical paradise there! It was an amazing experience to live there , I fully enjoyed that year living in Florida but than I came to realize I can't live somewhere without an autumn season! Autumn is my favorite season! And lo and behold here I am living in Michigan! BAM! You just never know where life takes you!
@@genodangelo , Hi Mr. D'Angelo, thank you . I am totally thrilled that I am here! A new beginning ! Two years ago I never even heard of Petoskey, I don't even remember now what prompted me to start researching as a possible area to live at. One thing that was a highlight , well at least for me is that Ernest Hemingway use to live here! I had to find out for myself what intrigued him about this area, so I came to visit for a few days summer of 2023 and a year later here I am ! There's always a story behind everything we do and want in this life!
This is laughable for anyone who wants decent year round weather. If you are fortunate enough to afford a second home. Perhaps it might work in the summer, but Michigan's summers are also very humid and the winters are severe and downright unbearable.
Michigan is actually sunnier than Florida 5-7 months of the year. And Michigan winters have been getting milder with less snow. I'd rather be able to get outside during winter and hike and ski and enjoy the beauty than spend 3-4 months cooped inside in Florida because it's way too hot and humid and the sun burns you in minutes. So the lifestyles are more comparable than you might think.
Fact check: Michigan is consistently in the top 10 states of where people leaving Florida settle (of which there are hundreds of thousands of people leaving Florida every year).
Are you thinking about making a move to Northern Michigan? I want to be your real estate agent! Book a call with me here: forms.gle/ubsJ1gmTrsuKAQLo7

What do you miss most about living here? Thanks for watching!

Sorry for the dissertation but I needed to get that off my chest. I’m in Chx and go to Petoskey often, will definitely stop and see you.
Reality is setting in for people of Florida. We in Washington State also don't pay any income taxes.

Another reason is that most of Florida will be under water before your 30-year mortgage is paid off.

This is probably one of the most ridiculous videos on RUclips second only to Kamala Harris’ “rally” that just ended two minutes ago.🤣
