I wonder if it's a translation mistake. In Japanese there is a word アラサー (arasaー) which pretty much translates to "around thirty" and it's used as commonly as we'd say "in my/her thirties". However it doesn't mean someone is greater than thirties it's more like "if you round my age, I'm practically 30". So if he was 18 and she was 28, the original Japanese text would've likely referred to her as アラサー.
