  • Margaret Ong'ayo, a mother of 3, tells her story of success as a house manager for over 20 years in Kenya.
In her line of work, she has done driving lessons, advanced her cooking skills and employee/employer relationship.
She would drop and pick her employers' children from school and play.
With a working contract, Margaret is well aware of her rights: a decent pay, a job description as well as an annual leave.
Savings from her monthly pay, which she equates to that of any other person who works in the formal sector, have enabled her to get into serious chamaz. In return, she has bought land in Kitale, built her house and in another piece of land she recently bought, she plans to build rentals, together with other domestic workers who have formed the group.
    This is me with Margaret!

Every job has dignity. Its just a stepping stone sometimes. My family treated our domestic workers very well, even paying for them to take courses. When I came to America, I worked low level jobs including housekeeping at a hotel. I took pride in my job and considered it a stepping stone to pay bills and college tuition. I'm now in a great profession, making good money but I never look down on domestic workers or housekeepers. They all love me since I treat them with dignity

Well said. Wira ni wira ! Kazi ni kazi! I really don’t agree with anyone who talks about how they hated their job. ?? Because they are over qualified or because it is in a foreign country. We do the jobs we do out of necessity. And no one is tied down to any particular job.. freedom of choice to stay , change or advance on the job you have is in the hands of the beholder. Altitude is everything.

Thanks for doing this show Carol so that our africans employers who mistreat and look down on their domestic workers can see that those domestic workers are humans with big ambitions many just didn't get a fair chance at life. Speaking as a child of a former domestic worker now living in the united states, taken by my vmother who was a domestic worker with very big dreams when i came here 5 years ago. To all domestic workers watching this, you are worthy, you are treasured and the work you are doing right now is not the end of your road. There is a better tomorrow coz there is God who sees all and will bless the work of your hands and fulfill the desires of your heart.

Someday I will tell my story too I have been in Saudi for 8yrs and I always thank God I took the risk to come here instead of searching for work in kenya it's very true when you focus you can do more than someone working in Kenya offices. I'm so proud of my self because when am on vacation sometimes I wonder how I've managed to build my mansion and got rentals yaani unapata the people who know am working as a housemaid wonder how much am being paid because the kind of development I've done can't compare to someone working those good jobs in kenya .Still going strong and to the ladies starting housemaid job expecialy in middle east focus on your goals not what your friends are expecting because I've seen many ladies work for 4-6yrs without achieving any goal because they focus too much on only dress code and renting cars wakiwa vacation *kufuraisha marafiki*
