I'm Kenneth Edward Barnes and I'm an outdoor writer and author of many books of several genres. In the fall of 2019, Henry sent me their new Garden Gun and I tested it with several different shot shell loads and at several ranges. I also tested other smooth bore .22s and several .22s with riffling. I have an article about my results in my book "Barnestorming the Outdoors: Revised edition" on Amazon. I have used the little .22 shot shell since I was fourteen and that was in 1965. The CCI shot shell was the worse in pellet count and in pattering. The pellets in the shot shells from CCI are not uniform in size, some are number 12, but many others are even smaller and are size dust, which is the smallest size I know of. I tested the shot shells from Federal, Remington, Winchester, and one from Mexico.
This will pay for itself in one season when used on carpenterbees. People with wood porches, handrails, siding, soffits. Pole barns rafters completely destroyed by carpenterbees. World's greatest invention for Pest control.
That ash furniture would look great on a h001 model. Thanks for showing the garden gun first video I have seen on it.
Thanks Scott. I appreciate Henry for being open to sending me a T&E gun just to show the difference in patterns. The Ash sure looks different and it feels different too.
Good ole plinker with some fun testing....shotshell is always fun just not cheap....Good stuff...
Good point. I paid 5 dollars a box for those CCI and there's only 20 in a box.
Remington made smoothbore .22s years ago. They even thought about have indoor trap shoots using .22s with smoothbores on small indoor targets. Great video, thank you.
They didn't think about it they did it for many years I have some old NRA clay targets made for .22 LR smooth bore competition they are just over 1" in diameter every body keeps saying they don't pattern good when they are using the wrong gun 😂😂😂 I bet their 12 ga. Rifled barrel patterns bad too 😂😂😂😂
I actually laughed out loud at the spider bit. xD
Didn't even know the garden gun existed, thanks!
Are you a Buffalo Outdoors fan? Are you subscribed to the channel?
Hahahahaha
".... yethhhh.."
He caught me by surprise! ;)
Really like the look of the garden gun you ol short stroker. Great video Buffalo. Very useful information.
LOL! You got me. I'm a short stroker for life but I'm not ashamed ;)
garden gun, slick!
I appreciate Henry for sending it over. It was nice to see how the smooth bore performed! Thanks.
I'm supposed to be editing my own videos but then I got your notification... great video and info
Thanks so much for taking time to check out my video Chuck. I know you're a busy man and I appreciate what you do buddy!
I've been using 22LR and 22MAG shot shells for years, glad to see the Garden Gun from Henry! Thanks for the demonstration :)
Thanks for the videos on the Garden Gun. As a kid, I remember my Grandfather having a .22 smoothbore, not sure of the make, but I always wanted one. I had to run out & order one, since they weren't released in the Western Mass area yet, or NH or VT, but one finally materialized in NH for me. I have a few other Henrys in .45-70, .44, & .410, & enjoy all of them. Best regards, Barry
Live Henry guns
So well made!
Just bought a Henry Garden Gun today. Looking forward to trying it out.
At night, we'd use to go into the barn turn the lights on knock rats off the rafters with 22 rat shot. Great vid!!
We shot them in chicken houses. Spent every dime I had on cci shotshells back in the 80s.
That sounds like a hoot to me! I'd enjoy the heck out of that!
I had a rat issue last year & took care of several with the .22 shot shells at close range using a vinjtage single shot with rifled barrel. Once I heard about the Henry smooth bore I immediately went about trying to get one. Took over a year waiting for a Canadian vendor to finally get several examples so I snapped one up. Haven't shot it yet but it's nice to know via your video that the shells pattern much better. Money well spent for me. ;-)
Excellent scientific and a pleasure to watch. Big thumbs up to Henry for supplying the rifle for this test
Thanks! I couldn't believe they'd do that but I'm glad they did.
Without a doubt some of the best produced videos along with great information Keep up the great work!!!
I gotta know how accurate it would shoot normal 22lr ammo at different distances...bet that video would get plenty of views! Thanks Buffalo, you're the best!🙏👍🇺🇸
I had no intention whatsoever of shooting solids through it. BUT due to the comments I have gotten on this video it looks like you guys have forced my hand! I'll have to put a few through it just to see what it does just keep in mind it was never intended for that!
The grain on the gun is nothing short of beautiful and nice job with the video as well need more people like you
Thanks so much for the comment. Much appreciated!
I have this gun. By far my fav rifle to shoot. Never miss with factory sight. No adjustment. No scope.
Always calming and educational vids. Thanks again.
Thanks man! I appreciate that. I appreciate what you do with your channel as well!
Thank you for this great update video. I love my Henry and your videos are helping me get to understand the rifle. So, I "liked" your video, left a comment, subscribed, and named my dog Buffalo
Great video like usual! This is my new go to place for useful information on all things shooting related! Thanks for your work!
Just stumbled upon your channel while looking for a review on the CCI shot shells. Good stuff. I’m now subscribed. Cheers!
Very cool to see a smooth bore. .22 avaliable again, One oppon a time in the 80s, we would shoot rat's in a mates Aircraft Hanger, that was a hell of a fun way to spend the weekends .. 👍👍🇦🇺
Man that does sound like a lot of fun! I'd be all over that! Thank you.
Buffalo, I would love to see that smoothbore shoot regular long rifle rounds... if it shoots 2" groups at 30 feet, I can think of several uses for this little gun.
Also, Henry rifle, I would love to see a 2 barrel take down of this little gun.
I had no intentions of shooting solids through this thing but due to the overwhelming majority of the feedback I have received from this video it looks like you guys have forced my hand!
@@buffalosoutdoors Just be careful and don't blow it off!
R. Akers what uses??
Good video. Cool that Henry sent you that to test for a video. *:-)*
Yeah that was mighty nice of them. I'm glad they did that.
Sweet video! Now I know what Santa can bring me.
Killed a big rattlesnake in my back yard 3 weeks ago with that same shot shell out of my 22 revolver. It works, thanks for the review on the shot shell and rifle.
Where do you live?
Awesome!
You do a great job with your videos! Always impressed with your marksmanship.
Thank you!
Buffalo you have some of the best gun content out there. Thank you!!
Huh, didn't know about that one !
I'm like you on the spiders, not afraid of them just don't care to be around them! They give me the heeby jeebys ! 😊
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
EXACTLY> I don't mind them if I spot them before they are on me. If I find one on me I bet I could when a break dance contest!
@@buffalosoutdoors
Now that would be a heck of a show,
with you and me both doing a crazy dance ! 😊
I saw this gun reviewed by 22 plinkster quite sometime ago! It’s a very cool looking and effective done for it’s purpose. I’m glad Henry brought it back into production! Nice job on the video, you did a good job expanding on the guns limits and uses
Thanks for that. I saw plinksters video on the official Henry channel. He does an awesome job.
Picking up my henry next week! Thanks for the videos!
My garden gun is a .410, my barn gun is a .410 and my boathouse gun is a .410. It hammers at 30 yards!
Good stuff!
I've owned one for about a year now. It's rugged enough to bounce around on the mower, UTV (side-by-side),or tractor. I bought it at Sportsmans Warehouse. Great purchase. Henry makes iconic firearms. It's an unequivocal rodent and pest slayer. But, use the CCI .22 shot. Rifle built for this ammunition. I almost feel guilty for how many pests I eliminate.
great stuff bud your video of the classic hoo1 helped me understand some things about it appreciate your knowledge
Your reviews are great, thanks!
Thank you I appreciate that!
Good stuff Buffalo!!
Thank you!
Very good video and test for shot shells
You big girls blouse lol, scared of spiders! awesome video as usual Mr C.
HAHAHAHA! Thanks!
Buffalo is refreshing after an impeachment searching and fishing day. I wonder what the range would be with bullets in the smooth bore?
I had a smooth bore bolt action single shot for rats... The pattern with these specific rounds was really random. Sometimes they were really clean like Buffalo showed. Sometimes the capsule stayed together and produced one hole. Weird.
I prefer a really old Charter Arms .22 revolver, with worn out rifling. Great at 10 feet.
Old hog rifle (garden gun) is Okay out to about 25 yard's or so with a plan lead .22rd. mine was anyway
@@michaelhedgepeth5106 Well, thanks bud that's good to know because a man's gotta know his limitations.
@@michaelhedgepeth5106 thanks for the info!

That’s really cool!
Beautiful gun!!!! Can't wait til the video with standard ammo
Love watching all the buffalo videos!! I'd rather watch u do gun reviews than anyone out there!! Keep up the good work 👍
I would love to see a smooth bore Ruger Wrangler. That would have more utility for me than a rifle.
That would be neat.
Many thanks buffalo for the video, that black ash wooden furniture is real nice looking I like that
I thought it looked nice too. It has a good feel to it as well.
Really helpful as always!
Thanks!
Oh okay in the last shots I see the heavy wood grain. Looks like an old fence post.
Somehow that’s appealing also. Lol
What a coincident i just sent a mail to a gunshop a order on a henry 22
Cool!
Well done
Great video very informative thanks
Another good one Buff
Thanks so much buddy! I always appreciate your comments!
I think that’s a great idea but I think Henry should come out with a take down with two barrels one rifle and one non-rifle, I know Winchester used to make guns in multiple calibers like that same action just different barrels, I seen one that was at Winchester 1886 in 45-90 and then it had an extra barrel and 50-110
That would be handy as sliced bread!
Thanks for sharing! I think it is really nifty that you have your own range and can shoot steel targets. Around here you have to pay $20 per hour to shoot and can only shoot paper targets and only targets in one lane at a time.
Maybe that Feller that did the song "I Don't Like Spiders and Snakes" needs that Garden gun! I like to use them shot shells in my lever gun for taking out wood bees in the spring back in the old tobacco barns. Oh yeah, and like always awesome video Buffalo thank you!
WOOD BEES! That would be a blast! Talk about some sporting clays practice ;) Thank you Larry!
Fascinating! Thank you! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
Good video and I bet that spider is subscribed!
I saw his leg move when I ask him! :)
Starling & pigeon removal
Yep! Good reason!
Excellent video 💥💥💥
Thank you!
Guess you took twist rate out of the equation.
LOL! I reckin I did! ;)
Great test! It really did make a difference!
Thanks my friend! I appreciate you stopping in!
Very good video
Thank you!
A narrow envelope of use, but very good if that's what you need. Last time I used 22 shot shell was in a Davis Derringer, getting lots of spread with that combo.
Well stated. It fills a small niche.
Thanks Buff, I think I will stay with my rifled barrels with subsonic rounds and or super cobri
Great video, I using a Marlin 39A and it seems to be working well at about 7-11 ft. 5 shots, 5 rats.
Thanks for a great video and comparison, Buffalo.
I had a struggle with using shot loads in .38 and .22 revolvers fro snake protection. I KNEW they just HAD TO BE the best thing for the job, but the number of snakes that just crawled away with little visible effect was discouraging. (In retrospect, a snake that crawls away is a "win" even if the the shot load only scared it) At that time we had the crimped type .22 shot loads and I made up shot loads for .38 Special on handloading equipment using #9 shot we had in abundance for skeet shooting. Of course, I was shooting them from a rifled barrel in a handgun. I used a small charge of Bullseye and 2 card wads cut from the cardboard which came in shirts using an overly "chamfered" .38 Special case to contain the shot. I found that within the effective range of a shot load (under 10 ft.), I could just as easily kill a rattlesnake with a .22 LR or .38 Wadcutter bullet. Any snake beyond that distance would likely be passed unnoticed, and if it was noticed, could easily be avoided. I didn't go out of my way to shoot snakes.
The smoothbore extends the range to be more effective at longer rangers...20 ft. Could be useful for rat or pigeon shooting in the barn.
You're very welcome and I am glad that you enjoyed the video! They seem to be just powerful enough to get the job done on pests without messing everything else up.
@@buffalosoutdoors These always remind me of when I was a 12 year old "ballistician" and I was absolutely sure that I could cook up something better at the little loading bench in the utility room. Alas, the snakes were just as safe from my super-duper shot loads as they were from the factory .22 shot loads.😕
I wish they had a side loading gate
With a .22 I can kind of understand why the Henry's don't have a loading gate.
Good stuff bro 👍
Thank you!
I have has those break while being chambered in a golden boy, the shot made it lock up. They also pattern worse than the crimped type. I use them on red wasps.
Kill all those red wasps! Those things get me every summer!
Have a merry Christmas
You too!
well done
I've only ever used .22shotshells in revolvers. One of my favorite tricks is to put 2 balloons 1/4inch apart& bet friends I can pop em both with one shot by shooting between them...of course I don't let em know I'm using a shotshell till after I shoot. It's a fun gag to play on them. PS, I didn't know Henry made a smoothbore .22. I've got the large loop short, long&long rifle Henry .22 carbine with the rifled barrel, which I love.
Rifled or Smooth Bore it doesn't matter - you're always on target, brother. (a little corny, I know ;) Thanks Buffalo!
I appreciate it corn and all my friend! I always appreciate your comments.
I want to see how lead bullets shoot from the smoothbore!
I am sitting here reading through the comments tonight and comments like yours are the overwhelming majority. You guys have forced my hand! I gotta do it! ;)
@@buffalosoutdoors Success! Thank you!
Yup....I would of tested that bird shot...on that spider...lol...
When I ask if he was a subscriber he raised one of his legs. I took that as a sign to let him live. Otherwise he'd have been blasted!
@@buffalosoutdoors lol..
Ive been thinkin on gettin one just so i can say ya i have a smooth bore 22. I got a few single shots and a marlin model 60 and a henry lever gun with rifled barrel. This one would just be for sayin i have one. But it looks pretty nice and that dark ash wood is different so well see. Thanks Buffalo
You're very welcome. It does have a very different look with that Black Ash wood. It feels different too.
So much fun.
Thank you!
On behalf of that beat up piece of roofing, I both gave this video a 👍🏽 And it was subscribed to the channel whether it wanted to or not 😎 I think the Henry would also be a great platform for younger hunters to learn on before they hop on up to 30-30, or my personal favorite, the 45-70. Of course it would take a little while for kiddos to, not only learn the mechanics of the rifle, but also the 10 commandments of firearm safety! Great video as always!!
Awesome comment as I agree with you about it being a great teaching tool. Thank you my friend.
Always! Look forward to the next one!!
i have the savage bolt action smooth bore,,awesome
THANK FOR YOUR VIDEO HERE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANIA WE HAVE SHOOTING MATCHES WITH SMOOTH BORE RIFLES AT 17 FEET CLOSES TO CENTER LOTS OF FUN GIVE IT A TRY OH WE USE WINCHESTER CRIMPED AMMO
A Boomer here,
I remember seeing crimped 22 shot shells. I think that was before plastic was invented!
They still make them, I have a couple boxes of the Federal crimped shotshells. They are quite a bit louder than the CCI!
Thanks for the test, Buffalo! I had been wondering if the Garden Gun was worth it or not.
I've got to buy a H001 to replace the one that I gave away. I fell in love with that little rifle!
They are sooooo much fun! Thanks for the comment Pat. Sorry for the slow response. I always appreciate all you guys' comments!
Love your accent.
Thank yee!
You Rock
Thank you!
But... can you shoot hand thrown clays with it!!??????? Love to see that video just for fun
that spider is kentuckyus geegollyus.
22Plinkster did a video with these where he compared the pattern of them out of from a long barrel to a like 1 inch barrel small snub nosed pistol and what was interesting was that the longer the barrel the more scattered the shot was. The 1 inch barrel had the tightest and best grouping. Not sure why, but I’m guessing that the rifling makes it scatter more.
That's very interesting. Thank you.
Yes,..I was about to ask, how would the '22 cal Henry Shotgun handle the normal .22 ammunition? I like the looks of that smooth bore Garden Gun model!
I got some useful information here,..I've always wondered how 'shot shells' worked in a rifled barrel, now I know.
Thanks for doing this video Buffalo, I know it must have taken a fair bit of your time to make this, and I appreciate it.
It took me several hours at the range and a couple more to edit it together but I enjoy it. Glad you got some useful information from it. Also I had no intention of shooting any solids through but due to the volume of comments I got from this video it looks like I will have to at least shoot a few through it and post a video on how it does with them. Thanks for your comment, a lot of folks don't realize the time that goes into a video like this. You can see it was starting to get dim out in that last clip!
I did not know they made a 22 smooth bores. That is pretty cool. How does it do with regular rifle rounds?
I haven't tried it with regular ammo but it looks like I will have to due to all the comments I've received! Thanks!
Great video- that stuff doesn’t have a lot of pellets, it’s fun to shoot, but mostly useless. Ive thought of carrying it in my 22 revolver when hiking just for snakes- but then you can do the same with 44 Magnum, or 38 special as easily..
Thanks!
How about just walk around the snake and leave it be? If you've got time to draw and shoot, you've certainly got time to take a step or 2 back, and that's all it takes.
Your channel rocks, thanks Buffalo!
Great video! As usual.
I’m wondering too, how the garden gun would go using regular bullets!
Might be an excuse to get it out again.
Thanks for your video’s and keep em coming. 🙂🇦🇺
I had no intention of shooting solids through it but I am sitting here reading through the comments tonight and all you guys have made it clear to me what I need to do next! Thanks!
@Buffalo hahaha, yes, I saw some other requests too. I am really curious to see how it goes.
Birdshot in crimped cartridges is much more powerful than CCI’s capsulated.
Crimped cartridges = Remington & Winchester. Now that said, CCI’s 22wmr or “Magnum”, has a lot of power, even out of a revolver.
I’ve shot mice at close range with the 22wmr in a 5” barrel revolver and there wasn’t much left.
This little shotgun would be really REALLY cool if it had screw in choke tubes!
What kind of damage does it do to barn tin at say 10feet? Lots of barns have tin walls too and you wouldn't want to tear them up.
Or 1 foot? So many different ranges so little time!
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around your posted results. Almost all shot was in the green at 5 yds. At 10 yds only 25 pellets contacted the green, but at 15 yds 45 pellets hit the green, then 14 were in the green at 20 yds.. Did you mix up 10 and 15 yd targets or does shot fly in a bit of a wave?
I have an old Savage Mark I bolt smoothbore. Sort of heavy. I think your Henry would be a lot more fun to cycle. I've tried the CCI shotshell. I get better results with the Winchester crimped shotshell. Don't even know if Winchester makes them anymore. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks.
I don't have any of the Winchesters but I have a couple of boxes of the Federal crimped style. They are substantially louder than the CCI, I don't know if they are loaded hotter or what. Thanks for the comment!
It would be interesting to see how a Marlin .22 with a microgroove barrel would compare.
I see all of the other comments asking how this gun will perform with bullets instead of shot. I’m curious too, but......Your closeup view of the barrel show the warning from Henry that this gun is for use with shotshells only. Give Henry a call before you try bullets in it. Perhaps there is a bore diameter constraint which could elevate pressure to unsafe levels.
