And I forgot to add in my video a question. Is horticultural oil as good as Neem oil? Or does Neem have some other properties that help get rid of the pests more than the oil?

OMG, you and me both... Mealies, scale and spider mites galore. And I'm a small person who can't lift some of these palms with ease to get them into the shower....That's why I'm hoping that almost all of my many palms will go in the ground next year and that my yard will be like yours, filled with boxes. And I'm so happy to hear that you are also having trouble with your robustas, I have so many of them and this is the first year I've had them, so first winter with them and I was shocked to see the spider mites. And I'm delighted to be able to look forward to the enclosure that you build for your large agaves. I have an enormous Agave Americana Blue that is as tall as me and as wide.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one. But yes, even though its work to protect them outside, in the long run it seems easier. Right now it's some of my smaller palms and citrus that I'm dealing with pests so that is helpful. I am hoping in a month or two I get some nice days to get them outside and spray them down. It's always my goal just to get them through the winter

Always good to see your updates Tim.
I've given up completely on citrus as the bugs can't resist them
Interestingly I've never had any.bugs on my washies ever. Bigger ones in the garage kept at 4°C- 10°C. Even the small indoor ones at 20°C with strap leaf unaffected. Maybe it's all the other plants that are your bug source. Sagos I keel outside wrapped up. I'm also looking forward to spring. Bring it on

@@vincenzecalzone8666 you’re so lucky with the Washies! Oddly the Filiferas seem fine. It’s just the robustas. Next week is going to be so cold

Hi, My wife and I just love all of your videos. You have been very inspirational to us. You share our interest in these plants. I saw that you have a Big Leaf Magnolia in another video. I saw them when we visited the Highline In Chelsea last spring. They were in bloom, and looked beautiful. Evidently, they can grow in our climate. ( You can take your boat down river a bit to see them, lol). Anyhow, I would love if anyone knows where I can get one

Thank you so much. And unfortunately I had a new roof put on two weeks ago and when they were throwing everything off the roof they took all the branches off my Big Leaf Magnolia. (I was not happy). So I guess I have to wait longer for it to recover and bloom. They are so beautiful and tropical looking.
Mine came from a nursery in CT if you’re looking for one

P.S. I live in France and just found your channel a half a year ago... I have been slowly been transforming my Japanese style garden into a more hardy tropical garden after following tons of UK hardy tropical garden peeps for the past almost 3 years... I am in zone 8b.. This is the second year I have over wintered plants, but the first year doesn't count because it was really tropical houseplants that I put in our indoor pool area and it was way too cold but esp humid for them, so they all rotted.. and my indoor plants got black flies..So, this winter, really trying to be better at it... I have placed most of the plants I potted up in our unheated upstairs guest apartment, but by the window.. They seem to be ok and I will def go and check the sago for mealy bugs tomorrow.. I have my colocasias, bird of paradise, and also a precious palm I bought in July, that was marked as a Pheonix Canary palm, but it is actually a Pheonix roebellinii palm and took a heap of damage a week ago when the temp dropped to -6C, I had it inside of a 'plastic' greenhouse and also tied it up and fleeced it several times around and had a lot of insulation at the base.. first time it has taken damage and has been protected since early Nov, was even fine up until then with freezing temps outside.. I think I did something wrong.. The fronds all got freeze damage and went from a beautiful lush green to a dark/brownish green and now getting to be a dried up brownish green, so sad!! I hope it survives, the spears are fine, still green and no spear pull, will wait and see in spring.. I didn't realise it was a roebellinii until someone in my FB group mentioned it... I feel sad about that, since I would have definitely brought it inside.. The woman at the plant store was misinformed and told me it will be ok to plant outside and protect in winter.. Not the case for this type.. I don't know if you have any of those and if you do, if they stay protected outside.. But, I won't be leaving it outside again in winter if it survives the damage... Anyhow, I feel like I'm rambling.. Thanks a lot for your videos, very cool garden you have. My parents live in Costa Rica, on the Caribbean side, and I have always loved tropical plants.. Cheers....

@@Islandgirl4ever2 thank you for the correspondence. You are in a very nice planting zone. I’m jealous.
I have both a Canary Island Date Palm and a Roebelenii. They are both outside for the winter but very protected. If you view some of my previous videos you will see them. I find that all of my date palms due very well being protected and going dormant over the winter. When does Spring start there?

I've had great success combating aphids with diluted dish soap. Of course, my collection is considerably smaller than your wonderful array! Nice work.
