Welcome back to a video update of my Washingtonia robusta...

Could you already see the growth from planting in 2010 through 2021.
Unfortunately, my Washingtonia robusta has now died because I was one time too nonchalant in the winter 2022-2023...😔
You can watch how that went in this video.
I bought it in 2009, planted out at the beginning of 2010, so now (2024) it was 14 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b)

You can see the pain in your face, when you pushed it over. Good video. Though such a shame to lose a beautiful palm after looking after it for ao long
Well seen Matt, I also saw it afterwards on the video footage... Indeed a lot of pain with this loss. But I can only blame myself for this. Nothing more to do and learn from this lesson. This proves once again that all the work I do for my palms is certainly necessary, also here in Belgium.

A pure W. filifera is not easy to find here in Belgium. W. filifera also has a harder time with moisture, I don't know if it will do better...🤷♂️
But I would like to try it in the future if the opportunity arises 👍
And Butia is the species I've lost the most specimens of in 15 years. I have only just sawed one into pieces, it will be in one of the next videos... 🙈
But Butia is indeed much stronger than Washingtonia.

I LOVEEE palm trees, I felt your pain watching this, it kinda made me sad watching this, because wow, so many years, you watched it grow and grow and it just all comes to an end.😭 I’m growing a few palm trees, they are doing well, hopefully they last for many years.
Indeed Eddy, this was painful. Unfortunately, in our climate you are quickly punished if you make mistakes.
Nice to hear that you also like palm trees. What species do you have and where do you live? Do you also have severe winters?

I'm living in zone 7b almost 8a in Alabama USA. I gave up years ago on all washingtonia species. They all grow fantastic for a decade or more, and then our wet cold winters always finish them off! Sorry for your loss.

Hey Dimi! I don't know how I missed your channel, because we have a lot in common, namely tropical and succulent gardening. I'm a new subscriber in southern Louisiana in the United States -where we enjoy a typically warm, subtropical climate - who has been into growing exotic tropical and tender succulents for many years. I live at a retirement home where we have a large covered patio where I can display them for all our residents to see and enjoy. I'm fortunate to have an adjacent heated room where I can skoot them inside in the event of an occasional night where we may get to freezing or the high twenties. I have that luxury, so there's no excuse for me either losing one or one being damaged by the cold. Keep posting your great videos. I enjoy them, as we share similar situations. 🪴🌴🌵

De winter 2022-2023 die hem de kop heeft gekost viel op zich nog goed mee. Ik had toen niet zo lui mogen zijn, dan had ik er nu nog wat langer van kunnen genieten. Echter is het inderdaad wel een prestatie om deze van klein naar zo groot te brengen ja. Belangrijkste is dat ik weer geleerd heb uit deze fout...

Thanks Niek. Ja ik twijfel nog wat er in de plaats komt. Ik heb nog verschillende planten in pot die al jaren wachten op een plek in volle grond. Maar het moet ook mooi zijn en de plek moet ook ideaal zijn voor de plant. Ook nog rekening houdend met omliggende planten en groeisnelheden enz... veel te veel factoren die twijfels geven...🙈 Komt wel inorde. Inderdaad pijnlijk & zonde van die prachtige Washingtonia. Ik had nooit zo lui mogen zijn in 2022-2023 en zoveel risico mogen nemen. Ik wist het en toch deed ik het, les weer geleerd... Maar ik mag eigenlijk niet klagen, als je weet wat ik allemaal wel nog in de tuin heb staan...😇
Im surprised that you got it that big in your climate..im in san Diego CA. those things literally grow out of the cracks in the side walk...ive lost Bismarkias and licuala here from cold or dry heat.

I protect & heat my palms very well in the winter here. That's why I succeeded. Unfortunately I was too lazy once in the winter 2022-2023. And that was too much of a risk for a Washingtonia here in Belgium...
A shame...but my own fault. 🤷♂️
I also had Bismarckia, it is my favorite palm. But they are far too tropical to grow well here. He even died in the house here.

Alors ce n’est que mon avis mais je pense que le faite qu’il a pas eut de protection au dessus de sa tête (hiver 2022 )
La pluie , la neige sont rentré dans le cœur et c’est de ce faite que tout a pourrit..
L’humidité c’est bien plus redoutable que le froid ..:/
Tenter le washingtonia filibusta un hybride qui est très résistant j’en ai un petit il est top 👍

Oui, vous avez tout à fait raison. J'ai été beaucoup trop décontracté. En effet, l'humidité est pire que le froid. Bon conseil sur la filibusta, si j'en ai l'occasion, je l'essaierai certainement. 👍

Gutted for u mate after having it all these years as well, and watching it grow from a small palm 😢nothing worse. Below -5°c its in soapy bubble although ud think one that size would have built up a good cold tolerance.

In der Tat, Günter, ich war 2022-2023 sicherlich zu faul und nachlässig. Und das ist bei einer Washingtonia sicherlich sehr riskant. Ich wusste das und doch habe ich den Fehler gemacht... Dumm von mir und jetzt muss ich die Konsequenzen tragen. Es ist schmerzhaft nach so vielen Jahren, besonders nach solch einem dummen Fehler. Aber ich werde nicht weiter trauern, ich kann mich auch nicht beschweren, wenn ihr wisst, was ich noch im Garten habe...😇
Vorerst kein Washingtonia mehr, aber vielleicht irgendwann in der Zukunft...🤷♂
Hi dimi, I have a love for tropical palms just like you. On seeing the death of a semi mature washingtonia robusta is sad. I think you stick to the trachycarpus fortunia. They are much more likely to survive. Tell me, did you fleece the crown of your washingtonia prior to winter?
Hi Christian, I was too lazy in winter 2022-2023, I didn't prune the leaves nor did I wrap them with fleece cloths as you can see in the video...
So I lost the Washingtonia through my own fault. Be lazy once and you pay the full price...🤷♂️
Of course I also have Trachycarpus fortunei and many others. Be sure to watch my other videos, then you will see that I also have many other palms...😊👍

@Dimi.Exotic.Garden I watched it. Your garden looks truly amazing. Do you use any fertiliser on any of your palms or do you just leave them? I've just planted 4 phoenix canariensis at home. 2 in the front garden, which is by the busy A49 in Hereford. And 2 in the rear garden. My garden is about the same size as yours. I'd love to rip up the fruit trees I have and go 100% tropical

Yes, I definitely use fertilizer, I have so many palms that it is definitely necessary to keep the soil nutritious. I use DCM fertilizer.

omg so sorry ! i have 3 of these 1 had spear pull last year dug it up but it came back , the other in ground is now twice the size. there are a few near me southend essex uk but it must be warmer here in uk

Il est possible de faire grandir l’espèce en Belgique. Car j’en ai déjà vu un tout près de la rue du Sablon, à Bruxelles.
À Bruxelles, nous avons des grandes maison avec des hauts mur en maçonnerie ont une inertie thermique qui restitue la chaleur la journée.
Le palmier robuste, était dans une cours intérieur le long d’un mur d’un commerce , à chauffage des bâtiments qui chauffent les murs .
Pour la Belgique , le palmier trachycarpus est plus adapté, mais tu devrais mettre des figuiers ,abricotiers , amisiniers, grenadiers …..ça donne des fruits en Belgique.

Oui, un microclimat proche des hauts murs aidera effectivement ce palmier. Je crois certainement qu'il est également en croissance à Bruxelles.👍
Je sais que c'est possible, j'en profite depuis 15 ans. C'est à cause d'une négligence de ma part que j'ai perdu ce palmier. Le Trachycarpus est en effet plus adapté, bien sûr j'en ai aussi plein de différents, ainsi que plein d'autres palmiers...😉

Popełniłem duży błąd, który wyszedł na jaw dopiero, gdy było już zdecydowanie za późno. Niestety, nawet nie sądzę, że mógłbym tego uniknąć. Po prostu powinienem był lepiej chronić i ogrzewać zimą 2022-2023. 🤷♂️

A près tant d'années de soins, c'est triste de perdre ainsi un palmier. Personnellement je pense que le fait d'avoir enlevé les restes des anciennes palmes sur une bonne partie du stipe uniquement dans le but de faire joli, n' a pas été une bonne idée et a ainsi contribué à fragiliser la base du stipe, avec la conséquence que sa base a été complètement pourrie. Ce phénomène de "mode" est regrettable car ces restants d'anciennes palmes agissent comme une protection du stipe. L'année passée, j'ai vu dans une jardinerie des Trachycarpus fortunei qui avait subi le même "toilettage" et je les ai trouvés très laids. Le Washingtonia robusta est donné comme moins rustique que le filifera par Pierre-Olivier Albano, grand spécialiste des palmiers : le robusta de -6°C à -7°C, le filifera de -9°C à -12°C . Ces quelques degrés font toute la différence.
Salut Philippe, je comprends ce que tu veux dire. Je n'aime pas non plus un Trachycarpus dépouillé du tout et je ne ferais jamais ça. Mais chez un Washingtonia, les vieilles bases des feuilles se détachent naturellement du tronc. C'était également le cas de ma copie. J'ai donc seulement retiré les bases des feuilles mobiles. Je ne pense donc pas que cette fine couche aurait fait une différence pour moi. Je veux dire par là que je ne crois pas que mon Washingtonia serait encore en vie si j'avais laissé ces vieilles bases de feuilles en place. Je suis d'accord que retirer les anciennes bases des feuilles affaiblit un peu la base. Mais cela ne fera pas vraiment une grande différence. Certainement pas pour seulement deux nuits à -6°C...
Je n'ai tout simplement pas suffisamment protégé et chauffé. J'aurais dû chauffer tout le tronc de l'arbre et l'envelopper également de tissus d'hiver pour créer un effet de cheminée.
En effet oui, le Washingtonia Robusta est en effet moins résistant au gel que le Washingtonia filifera. Mais Washingtonia Robusta supporte un peu mieux l’humidité. Washingtonia filifera supporte un peu plus mal les gelées humides. Mais je veux quand même essayer un pur Washingtonia filifera ici.👍

Oui, c'est vraiment très dommage. Mais c'est ma propre faute. J'aurais dû protéger/chauffer beaucoup plus/mieux en 2022-2023. C'est le prix que vous payez lorsque vous devenez trop paresseux. Cela prouve une fois de plus que tout le travail que je fais pour mes palmiers est toujours vraiment nécessaire.
On ne peut malheureusement plus rien y faire 😔🤷♂

Bonjour je suis passionné de plantes exotiques et palmiers particulièrement c'est triste pour votre robusta ! mais bon pas aussi robuste que cela ! faut se résigner à se contenter des 3 ou 4 espèces acclimatables chez nous en Belgique , je suis diplômé en horticulture et j'ai la chance d'avoir depuis peu une grande serre froide de 91 mètres carrés et 5 de haut , plus besoin d'emballer chaque hiver mes plantes ! j'y ai planté un robusta il aura fait fin de saison 2024 près d'1 mètre ! 1 palme ouverte environ tout les 10 à 12 jours !!, vu la chaleur arrosage et pleine terre il pousse à son max , bonne continuation !

@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden merci oui faudra pas 10 ans pour qu'il arrive à la faite du toit , c'est pour vite avoir un grand palmier j'ai d'autres espèces qui dépasse rarement 4 ou 5 mètres , je prévoirai de ses semis à temps pour remplacer quand je lui couperai la tête lol , l'autre prendra la relève et son tronc servira de support pour fougères et plantes épiphytes :)

Da sieht man es wieder ganz deutlich- eine Palme gewöhnt sich zwar an einem neuen Standort aber die natürliche Genetik kann man einfach selbst nach Jahren nicht beeinflussen….
Ich denke irgendwann wird jeder von uns einmal solch einen ähnlichen Fehler machen? Problematisch wird es wenn die Palmen irgendwann zu groß werden um sie dann noch weiter richtig zu schützen ? Jedenfalls fühle ich mit Dir - danke noch einmal fürs Video !

Ja, man kann die Genetik nicht ändern. Ja, es ist eine Schande, diese wunderschöne Washingtonia nach so vielen Jahren des Wachstums und der Anstrengung auf so dumme Weise zu verlieren ... Ich kann nur wütend auf mich selbst sein. Ich hätte im Winter 2022-2023 nie so faul sein dürfen. Das war viel zu viel Risiko für eine Washingtonia, ich weiß und ich habe es trotzdem getan ...
Zum Glück habe ich noch viele andere schöne Palmen im Garten, sodass ich mich nicht wirklich beschweren kann 😇

À part le palmier de Chine et le palmier de l'Atlas, les autres palmiers, ici en région parisienne, sont à la merci d'une vague de froid. On voit des palmiers des Canaries et des palmiers Whashingtonia avec des palmes brunies quand elles ne sont pas entièrement perdues. Il ne faut pas forcer et accepter le climat sous lequel on vit, au risque de perdre sa plante au bout de plusieurs années de pousse. Même si je suis emballé par la vision de n'importe quel palmier, je prends aussi plaisir à contempler des arbres adaptés au climat océanique dégradé sous lequel on vit : les pins, les marronniers, les tilleuls, les platanes, etc.
Je comprends que ces palmiers n'ont pas leur place ici. Mais j’adore les palmiers et le défi de les faire pousser bien et magnifiquement est ici la partie amusante de cette passion. Je ne fais rien ni personne de mal avec cela, et la nature indigène ici ne sera jamais affectée. 😇
Et bien sûr, j'accepte que de temps en temps un palmier meure...
Cela ne peut être évité. Un jour, ils deviendront trop gros.

That's so so sad to lose a beautiful palm like that after all them years of care ,but it just shows you should never take winter and frost lightly ,always prepare for the worst because one tiny mistake can result in disaster ,always have things prepared beforehand, I have watched dimis videos and usually he is so careful in preparing for winter so I no he must be hurting to lose a palm like this and as a fellow palm lover my heart goes out to him 😢 ,its sickening to lose a big palm specimen 😢

It is indeed very painful to lose this beautiful Washingtonia in such a stupid way after so many years and efforts. I can only be angry with myself. I have indeed learned the lesson again, never to be too lazy in protecting again.

Meinen Sie im Winter 2022-2023? Das glaube ich nicht, Michael. Ich hätte meinen Winterschutz im Winter 2022-2023 noch einmal aufbauen und mehr heizen sollen. Ich hätte niemals den Fehler machen dürfen, einmal nachlässig zu sein.
Ich hatte diesen Winter einen Vollschutz mit heizkabel um meine Washingtonia gebaut. Wobei der Schutz nach unten hin ca 20 cm offen war. Innen hatte ich ein 4 Meter Kabel was nur um den Stamm gewickelt war und zusätzlich eine vlieshaube ( wie sinnvoll das ist.. naja😅).
Die Blätter waren leider trotzdem hinüber. Die Washingtonia hat es aber geschafft. Es waren -12,3 grad Celsius bei uns. Deswegen hatte ich überlegt diesen Winter nur ein längeres heizkabel (auch um die Blätter) und Vlies mal auszuprobieren.
Ich werde wohl den vollschutz wieder bauen müssen. Für den ersten Winter hab ich so gut wie alles über den Winter gebracht.. hanfpalmen, Washingtonia, jubaea Yucca rostrata und eine Yucca filifera 😊

@@michaelmeyhoefer9916 Hallo Michael, ein Heizkabel ist nur eine Nahheizung, daher bleibt dort, wo es angebracht ist, der Frost nur wenige Zentimeter fern. Hätten Sie die Blätter nicht mit dem Heizkabel umwickelt, hätten sie bei mäßigem bis starkem Frost keine Chance. Die Blätter einer Washingtonia sind bereits ab -4°C geschädigt und bei -5°C vollständig abgestorben. Schäden an der Palme selbst hängen vom Zustand und der Größe der Palme ab. In Kombination mit Frost spielen auch viele andere Faktoren eine Rolle...
Früher, vor über 10 Jahren, habe ich noch mit Heizkabeln geheizt. Bei kleinen Palmen ist das problemlos möglich, bei großen Palmen jedoch nicht mehr. Ich verwende elektrische Heizlüfter mit Ventilator, die die gesamte Luft im Stall erwärmen und der Ventilator bewegt auch die Luft. Das ist auch deshalb sehr wichtig, weil die Luftfeuchtigkeit in unseren Wintern viel zu hoch ist.
Ich nutze die Heizkabel immer noch gelegentlich als schnelle Notlösung bei leichtem oder mäßigem Frost. So wie ich es mit meiner Washingtonia in den Jahren 2022-2023 gemacht habe. Aber Sie haben gesehen, dass das viel zu wenig Erhitzung war, die nun den Tod zur Folge hatte ...
Ich hätte in den Jahren 2022-2023 nicht faul sein dürfen, die Washingtonia ungeschützt zu lassen und nur ein zu kurzes Heizkabel zu verwenden. Doch die damaligen Vorhersagen waren milder als die Realität. Na ja, dagegen kann man nichts mehr machen 🤷♂

Maar het blijft een prachtige soort, dus ooit komt die wel nog eens terug denk ik 👍😊

No, and this certainly wouldn't have helped at that point... Everything had been rotting for almost a year by then. The damage was too extensive inside and it has started to rot from the inside. That's why I didn't notice it at all in 2023, the spears were good at first and grew normally. I did not protect/heat the entire trunk far enough. It's completely my own fault.
@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden , Did you notice little holes in the leaves? Maybe it could also been affected by this parasite, which is quite subtle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paysandisia_archon, which seems to become widespread. I am indeed familiar with the Paysandisia archon and have already seen it in my garden a few years ago. But my Washingtonia was not killed by larvae of the Paysandisia archon. Still, thanks for the comment 👍
