I am a recently retired teacher (after 35 years) and I noticed the stress and anxiety of children increase significantly over the years.
The children that were the least anxious were those that were well rested and who spent lots of family time with parents, grandparents, etc.

I was diagnosed with a heart arrythmia last month. I was stuck doing nothing for almost 2 months because I was so sick and was having such a hard time. During that time of doing nothing I realize how much stress, worry and anxiety I had prior about things that just didn't matter. I wasn't giving my all to the important things in my life. During that time I realized it was the perfect opportunity to make a change..I'm now on medicine that is helping more and I'm able to do more now. They say things happen for a reason. I'm using this medical diagnosis as a reason to change my life around. Continuing to pray I still get better since I'm still not 100% yet. But I'm definitely making some progress. 🙏 all of what you've said is so true.

Recently, we found that we hit that sweet spot where we've decluttered enough to find more freedom with our time. Despite having little children we know that the main parts of the house can be totally clean in 30min. Now, in the evening we actually have time for ourselves! I never would have thought this would be possible. It's so freeing and now my husband is even looking for more and more to donate!

@@marie-louiseweerheim4224 no babysitter here! I would say to work on the main areas of the house first while they are in there using Dana's (A Slob Comes Clean) method. Then overtime I would leave them in that area to play knowing it would take 10 minutes to clean up and work on other areas. Sometimes I would do it during nap or I would put the baby in the carrier and find a few items around the house I could donate. I find the messiest area of the house was toys and the kitchen so I started decluttering there first. Just keep in mind "if it keeps getting out of control, more things need to go". Hope that helps! We were genuinely in a spot where my husband was mentally exhausted from work and coming home to the clutter so he would clear a spot and sit down, and I would be resentful I spent my whole evening cleaning up after others. Listening to these youtube videos while I cleaned the kitchen helped keep me motivated when it feels like it would never get there.

I love this message. I day I told my husband to "hurry" & that we needed to rush out the door to be on time. His response was that he wasn't going to "rush his life away" so we needed to decrease our commitments and allow more time to be ready so we didn't have to rush. WOW! Stopped me in my tracks, and what a great insight for me! We set about doing that. It really does mean honing in on what is important, and eliminating the "noise" in your life. We began to lead a much more relaxed lifestyle with fewer commitments but much more joy. I wouldn't trade it for anything!! Keep up the sharing of great messages!!

"Hurry" is truly so stressful and so damaging to a life that should be simply lived. I feel like apps like TikTok and Snapchat seem to take advantage of the haste we purposely unknowingly put ourselves in. By everything being quick and short-lived, they make us feel like we should catch it while we can... it's like a train, if we miss it, maybe the best thing for us is to sit, have a coffee, and write in our journals until the next train comes. What benefit is it to know too much, it's just more for the mind to process. Simple and chill are so much easier a life to live. Thanks for the reminder.

      AMEN
I am 64 years old and have been trained from a child to rest on Sundays.
      Everyone NEEDS a Sabbath day!
When we read the old testament, we find, even the ground needs a rest every seventh year.
It also explains, that the Lord will have his due.
I appreciate the comment about “time tithe”.
Because of living this way for all these years,
after church on Sunday, I find it hard to do much of anything except what I enjoy doing. It’s kind of weird. I just don’t have the energy for work on Sunday. Also, if there’s something that needs to be done to help someone, I appreciate having a time dedicated to the Lord to give to another. Once I sit and relax for a little while, I do have the energy for these kind of special things. It might only be a phone call to a friend or family, but the time is already allotted to acts of kindness and/or service. ❤️❤️❤️

I read Glow Kids & How to Break Up with Your Phone last year and then listened to Farmhouse on Boone's podcast about getting a dumb phone and then I got a flip phone last October. It's changed my life. Especially in terms of my marriage and my parenting (homeschooling!). There are inconveniences and challenges. But my family is so much more important and I'm willing to make some hard choices now to pour into my life right in front of me. The book Digital Minimalism is SO GOOD and so is Jose Briones's RUclips channel.
But it really was my oldest daughter (I have 3) watching and commenting on my screen time that made me really question if I'm modeling what is right. I was so addicted and I didn't even know it. I think we have to embrace the hard right now to give our children the childhood memories and experiences we want for them.

This video is so extremely perfect regarding how you impacted my life. I first stumbled over one of your videos only 2 weeks ago and your slogan "is this inventory I want to manage" changed my life.
Ever since I moved out of my parents house after finishing high school over a decade ago, I always lived very minimalistic. 5 years ago, I even immigrated to this country with just 2 suitcases.
But now, being a mother to a toddler and a baby, I had a really hard time the last couple years. I only understood why when I watched your video about the silent to do list. Our apartment just constantly got more and more cluttered, as tends to happen when having young kids.
The worst decision was implementing toy rotation for our toddler since it gave me a reason never to declutter any toys and books at all. Add to this mix my husband who likes to hang onto things "just in case" and our 2 bedroom apartment closets were not accessible any longer, being full of stuff.
The idea to declutter except for what is used or sparks joy does not work for me. Plus, many organizing systems just need too much time to be maintained - something I loved to do in the past but no longer "want to manage". So from the moment I first heard your slogan, it was so easy for me to say "this is not inventory I want to manage".
And this is where this video plays in so well, how this slogan changed my life: I started to applying this concept to pretty much anything. It helps me to stop shopping, it helps me to use my time better, to simplify my household, our possessions, any appointments and even contacts. No joke, I heavily removed apps on my phone last weekend since I asked myself if "this is inventory I want to manage".
I always have been great with organizing and so I didn't realize how time consuming this endless silent to do list was becoming. I worked in a very time consuming job until last year, that I quit while I was pregnant to be with my toddler and now also the baby. But I wasn't actually spending the time with them that I wanted, just rushing through the day, an endless list of tasks, so many of them unnecessary and pointless.
Decluttering and simplifying all aspects of our life will take time, I am committed to 20 minutes per day and already so much has changed. Our days are not rushed any longer and I spend more time with my girls every day - not just being together but actually being with them.
So thank you. With all my heart, thank you.

I live in an extremely (!) rural area and am currently staying in a major metropolitan area for my child's surgeries. The hurry and level of noise that surrounds everyone here is astounding. Even while sitting in the PICU waiting room yesterday, I put in earbuds with calming music from a meditation app to drown out the TV. It takes real intention to slow down and be fully present here. I suspect the level of hurry and noise increases the crime rate by increasing stress and irritation!

Of course, there is no way to know if it is an emergency, but on iphone you can send with "slam" and those texts could be set in agreement with your family so you know when you receive them that they are the important ones.

I'm experiencing something in my minimalism journey that I don't believe you've talked about. As we have removed the excess there's a need for cleaning in areas that are newly accessible. While i feel great about our smaller inventory being faced with the cleaning that i didn't see needed to be done is very psychologically challenging. It feels like a slap in the face when I should be celebrating. I guess I wasn't mentally prepared for the new list of things to do that has been unveiled.
Also, starting to wonder if there's such thing as house dismorohia. I think i see the house as the disaster that it use to be even as I'm nearing my clutter thrush hold.

Thought I would miss stuff that I took to the Goodwill but like you said, I just want to declutter more. Going to try Blinkist and removing some time wasting apps from my phone. Keep up the good work!!!

It is also wonderful to have 'permission' to do what you want, read a book etc. It's what you are supposed to be doing...whatever you love and never get time for. What a blessing! Good job, Dawn.

I am just beyond half way through life and looking back my childhood was so simplified. We had only what we needed. Somewhere along the way into adult hood I began to overwhelm myself. Now I think.. how do I take steps back to simplify again. To really enjoy the meaningful things in life and not the nick-nacks, gadgets, and technology that surrounds me.
I love your videos they really inspire me. Thanks

Thank you for telling about this book. I watched his RUclips speech of this book and what resonated with me was that there is less love and humanity, if we are too busy. ”Shortest bandwidth leaves only anger and anxiety”. Definately going to explore the book. Getting more bandwith with simpler and more minimal lifestyle really is a deep issue, not only for our mental health but for our soul too.

I’m so young/millennial but I remember when my dad got a family cell phone in the early 2000s. Nokia! In 8th grade I borrowed my grandma’s flip phone for the school DC trip so I’d have for emergencies. I didn’t get my own flip phone until the following year as a freshman in high school. It was actually one of my faves LG slick, simple design. Then when that died I got one with the pull out keyboard also LG bc they were trying to compete with blackberry and that was also kinda cool. Didn’t get a smart phone until almost college! I think this was a blessing bc I appreciate what a smart phone can be used for and also when it should be silenced.
I’m the only one in my immediate family who deliberately puts my phone away for dinner. Parents, sister, etc everyone is staring at their phone at dinner and I’m sitting thinking… aren’t we here to be together? It’s so odd.

I highly recommend looking online for a ministry called Run Hard Rest Well. A friend of ours started this a few years ago. She and her husband have run a camp for 30 years and she raised five kids. Three of them are adopted and a number have special needs. She said if God hadn't stopped her in her tracks and caused her to rest in the midst of her busy life she's not sure she would be alive today.

I love Blinkist! I love this video! One of my favorite tips from this channel is limiting items limits the time and energy we use maintaining things.
I've removed social media from my phone a long time ago. Sometimes it's hard when I want to share things on social media. But if it's important enough I will revisit it on my main computer. RUclips is another time sink. I might remove it...
I was so sad to recognize a recent obsession with the news and political information. I was becoming more depressed and negative. I also wasn't spending as much time with my family.
I'm horrible with time management. I think I'm un-dx for ADHD. Starting to be on "hurry" mode also because of caring about what people think. My kid is special needs and I have health issues that both interfere with getting to meetings on time. I worry people will think I'm careless but I've been stressing myself and my kid out more over rushing. It doesn't help.
We're more likely to make it on time when I'm not worried about being late, and we have suprisingly found more linience when we are late when I'm upfront about how we had a bad day ("stress not worth being on time today" calm demeanor).
It's that idea of how our minds can exaggerate how bad a situation will be vs reality. The more time spent quieting your mind and knowing yourself the better to avoid that!! 🕊️❤️

We observe the weekly Biblical Sabbath every Saturday as Messianic believers, and I LOVE IT! There's no working, buying, selling or making others to do the same! It's a day for worship, rest and family! At first I thought "there's no way I can do that, especially with little kids", well guess what? I can, and I do! LOL. On Friday's we prepare LOTS of yummy extra food and I always make a special dessert that night! We play games together, watch movies or get outdoors as a family! There's ALWAYS lots of yummie food that can be packed in lunches or re-used for other dinners throuout the week.....AND the kids LOVE that they don't have any chores that day, and I LoooooVE that I am commanded to not do any house work that day! *winks* I and my family always feel so much more at peace and refreshed after Shabbat and I hope everyone can do this as well! Shabbat Shalom

I love the idea of turning off phone notifications. I did that months ago because I was constantly pulled to my phone distracting me from what I was doing. And nothing on my phone is important, really, unless it’s a phone call. Texts can wait and if the person can’t, they should call.

Donna here using husband's computer. I've told my close friends & family if they really need to talk to me call because I may not look at texts all day. I use texts like a bulletin board where people can leave me a message and when I get around to it -usually after dinner - I'll read messages and respond if needed. I've found this simplified way of using my phone so much better. I have never used my phone for social media.

I’m retired and want to stay connected. But I agree with you on interruptions and distractions. My phone is connected to my Apple Watch. I can just glance at it when a call or text is coming. It’s nice not having to run to my phone. But it’s important to me that I am happier when I set aside time each day to just be quiet with my thoughts or meditate.

  • @ashleykelso6372

Thanks for this video! I found many of the tips really helpful. I’m always seeking ways to simplify our life and make room for what truly matters to us and remove the excess.
A few years back I realized I wanted to be less distracted by texts but silencing it or turning it off didn’t work in case a few important people needed to get ahold of me. So what I did was go on a handful of important people’s contact information and change their specific text tone to a more unique one. It took much less time than you’d think to remember which sound goes with which person. This helps me to hear a text and know it’s from my husband, for example, and give it attention, or a friend and know I can wait until a little later to respond.
    Have a great day!

I literally cannot get a paycheck without using the app to submit my work hours, and then I have to use another app to view my paycheck. I know I’m not alone. I finally said enough is enough. Turned the ringer off on my phone and found peace beyond measure. I'm disabled and unable to run across the house to grab my phone every time it rings. If its in my hand when a call comes in it will vibrate and i will decide if its important enough to answer, if not they can leave a message or send a text and if they don't then it wasn't important.
I realize this might not work for large families or business owners .. but it sure as heck works great for me.
