    I didn’t expect to understand this, but if you learn scales, chord progressions, and chord extensions this really starts to come together. As someone who comes from a church background with jazz leanings it’s super cool to see this stuff be explained and for me to understand. I feel like practicing piano right now 😂

    Such finesse- thanks for getting past the nuts and bolts of the theory and putting everything in context so thoughtfully. Really helpful to hear your process and the way you intuitively feel your way through things in a way that’s not purely technical.

      Skilled Musician Can you show us how these upper structures would apply to TRADITIONAL GOSPEL MUSIC?

    • @stylzkeyz
      @stylzkeyz 5 лет назад

      If You show us upper structures for say “Great is thy faithfulness” than I would say couple it with a jazz standard such as “Girl From Ipanema”. This would give a solid foundation across the board. Especially since Gospel and Jazz genres mesh sooo well. Thank You for all your Video tutorials and work studies I’ve learned a great deal

    When I learned about upper structure triads years ago, I felt freedom and creativity for the first time. Knowing tensions or “color tones” as you refer to opens up another world. Traditionally I would also say the natural 7 on the dominant chord is to be only used in passing. These are great lessons.

    Thank you so much for your lessons. I'm an intermediate to advanced jazz guitarist and I must say that your key points for keys helps me understand jazz guitar chords a great deal. And not only that, but I've become emboldened to practice playing keys as well, albeit at a much lower level than I can play guitar. I'm a composer too and can say that these chord sounds are the roots of so much composition. Just hearing 'em gives inspiration and spark! Thanks Cory.

    Topics for future videos much needed: Key changes/modulations in the smoothest way possible. I think most know of the fundamental ways to change keys but I'm talking about creative transitions that put us in a different key without the audience even knowing. Common tone, modal interchange, theme oriented, etc. This is one topic on the internet that still lacks greatly. It seems that I spend too much time working on transitions because I just never feel it is at its best. Would like to hear/see your approach.

    Hello mister Taylor. I really appreciate your tutorials. One of the best on YT. About triadic upper structures on dominant chord; I was wandering why you did not mentioned the b3 major (Eb) and the 6 major (A)? Bill Evans often used the 6 major.

    Upper structure is a stunning concept.

    • @SkilledMusician

      Thanks kuku. We actually list 12 of these upper structures on our sheet music.

    • @kukumuniu5658
      @kukumuniu5658 6 лет назад

      I found something interesting:
      "But exploring upper triads comes in handy for composing and chord substitutions. Like if you’re working on a piece
      with a plain old Cm
      you can try swapping it for a Eb6, AbM7, Am7b5, or F9
      since they all share a triad and see where that takes you."

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  6 лет назад

      Exactly! That idea is the reverse in thinking, but it utilizes upper structures. Our idea is to keep the left-hand bass the same, and change the right-hand upper structure to whatever you like. The idea you found is very common in reharmonizations and composing, where we keep the right-hand the same, and change the left-hand bass.

    Can you do a traditional Gospel video. Most musicians can play well but seldom do you get that true capture of the traditional chords and sound. Walkups and walk downs and the common sound of classical, jazz, and blues to form Gospel is what I'm talking about.

    Is your learning software downloadable. If not can you please try and make it downloadable so that when we are offline we can be able to use it as well. Thank you.

    25:13 - flat 6
    I don't understand when 6 stay 6 and when becomes 13

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  6 лет назад +1

      Hey kuku! When I say b6 major, I'm ONLY referring to what the right hand is playing in relation to the bass. I'm not talking about the entire chord. So if you count up from the root a distance of a flat 6th, in your right-hand play that major chord. So in this example, the left-hand bass is C, so if we count up a flatted-sixth, we get Ab. So I'm saying play THAT major chord in the right-hand, while your left-hand plays C-E-G-Bb.
      In regards to a 6 vs 13, that's a completely different topic, that wasn't what I was talking about. C6 for example is just C-E-G-A, where C13 is C-E-G-Bb-D-F-A. Hope this helps!

    Cool stuff man.
    My 2 cents: know your target audience. With these advanced chords and tempo do you really think there are listeners who need counting?... sixth note.. let's see.. 1 2 3 4 5 6.
    Nothing personal, pretty much all the youtubers do this, I just don't understand why :)

    • @SkilledMusician
      @SkilledMusician  5 лет назад

      Thanks Karoly! I agree, those that are on this level probably don't need the counting, but for those that aspire to be on this level, they might need the extra counting. I definitely understand it can get annoying for someone on an advanced level. I will work to remedy this annoyance.

      my 2 cents: If you want to help those people count the way YOU count. Going to the 6 is: going 5 in one step (5th, which you really should know by heart) and then 1 more step. I bet that's the way you learnt it... a long, long time ago.
      Keep up the vids, you're doing an incredible job :)

      I mean, using both hands I can not play ten notes at the same time on the guitar
      just like you can not do vibrato or bending ;D
