  • "Charlie's Angels" is a 2000 action film starring Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Sam Rockwell, Crispin Glover, Kelly Lynch, directed by McG, based on the television series. In this video I discuss the film's creative origins, the many facets including the characters, action, concepts, production design, costumes, etc. This is one of my all-time favourites and no one will sway me from singing it's praises.

I wish audiences weren't so averse to this kind of blockbuster these days - films that embrace pure fantasy without feeling the need to be ironic. Today's blockbusters are either "dark and serious" or irreverent and ironic - almost in a way to apologize for being about something inherently unrealistic or grounded in reality.
It's like people are afraid to simply indulge in the fantasy film provides without the movie telling you it's ok to do so.

This movies and the Totally Spies cartoon were my female action fantasy and I love them. And yes the female camaderie was as crucial to it, even more so than the romance. Like look at their love interests they weren't even like the dreamiest guys of that era!!! How can people think this was only aimed at men. Sure, we could argue that trying to dress sexy and the like is a biproduct of sexism and go on a debate on that but it still doesn't change that it was part of OUR female fantasy in the 2000s not just the men's fantasy. WE wanted to dress sexy and we wanted to do it for ourselves not just for men as we're still trying to make people understand today.

This was such a neat review. Charlies Angels 2000, I won't deny that I loved it back then and I still love it now. The campiness, the action scenes, the soundtrack, there was just so much to like about this movie if you were in the right mindset and were just wanting to watch a fun action movie. But the best thing about this movie was learning that Cameron, Drew, and Lucy actually did a good majority of the stunts. I remember thinking that they mostly used a lot of stunt doubles to do those action scenes so imagine my pleasantly blown away expression when I came across the behind the scenes documentary and we got to see the actresses actually training and learning the stunts to do themselves. I was mentally squealing and that was definitely the highlight for me with the movie knowing the actually did do a good majority of the stunts.
    Anyway yeah, awesome review!

I was a big fan of Destiny's Child back in the day, and having 'em do their Independent Women song for the movie was so cool. I think the song's music video made me fall in love with female trios for some reason. Destiny's Child, Charlie's Angels, Dracula's Brides (2004's Van Helsing), the Unholy Trinity (Glee), to name a few. For me personally, it would've bin cool if you included footage from the sequel and Lucy Liu's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, but it was still a great video to watch.
Since your video came out, Drew Barrymore has her own talk show now and her first two guests were Cameron and Lucy. She also talked to Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland, where they both shared their views on the song and the movie. She invited her ex Tom Green to the show who played her boyfriend in the first movie, and also talked to Jennifer Garner who was inspired to play her character in Alias thanks to the Charlie's Angels movie.

I think the 2000s film simply had a lot of love, and was just incredibly entertaining. Behind that were a team of great people who made plenty of good decisions. I think the newest remake forgot about a lot of that, and tried too much to "tell", instead of "show". The whole 2000s film was also a fun love letter to films, and pop culture. As a gay boy I honestly preferred Charlie's Angels to other spy action films. It was so fun, glamourous, goofy, funny in a natural, smart way, you could tell the girls love to laugh, and I really enjoyed the individuality of the three girls and their quirks. Between the three of them they really could do everything.
PS. Alex is also my favourite, if I had to choose. From her smarts to her legendary hair flips to her ability to shut down people's bullshit to her trailer van scene to her constant baking to the way she used the chain to fight to how cool she was sky diving.

  • @rottensquid
    @rottensquid Год назад +2

This essay blew my mind. I thought I knew this film inside and out, but it honestly never occurred to me that none of the angels ever used guns. Just goes to show how unnecessary they are to action. I also never knew that Crispin Glover volunteered to cut all his dialog. What an insightful choice, and how perfect for a film that focuses so much on action and visuals to tell its story. That man is a treasure, and his casting in this film was a stroke of genius. When I first watched it, and realized it was him, and doing his own kung fu and stuntwork, I knew this film was visionary. I'd be really interested to know whose idea it was to cast him.
This film is so profoundly under-rated, I think because it does everything so well, instead of leaning into one statement to the exclusion of others. The very fact that it's such a fun action film confuses some people who might otherwise have noticed how ground-breaking it is as a feminist film. It lets the characters look fabulous, stylish and sexy without undermining their strength and self-determination. It lets them have romances without making their romantic interests the center of their worlds. It lets them be supremely capable without presenting them as flawless know-it-alls that can do no wrong. And the secret at the core of all this is their mutual support, something you rarely ever see in male-let action films.
And that friendship works so well for the very reason you point out, that it was real, on and off the set. When Cameron Diaz talks about their training in the interview, it's so easy to assume her comments about her limited flexibility is actually a humble-brag about her body at the expense of her co-stars. Easy, if you don't know Cameron Diaz. But Lucy and Drew know her, and love her, and trust her. That comes through in the interview, and also everywhere in the film. In the entertainment world, insecurities, backhanded compliments, and constant undermining seem to be the norm. It's so wonderful to see this other side. I think that's a major appeal of the film on its own.
People forget how collaborative film is. McG clearly had a brilliant vision for the sets and visual storytelling, but I think the soul of Charlie's Angels came more from Lucy, Drew, and Cameron, their creative choices, and their chemistry. It feels like the result of everyone pulling together for the sake of the film, playing the improve "yes, and" game to serve the collective vision. I suspect that's rare in the film industry, because just one difficult player can ruin it. Bill Murray came close to doing just that with this film, delivering a serious blow to the on-set harmony. Thank goodness everyone came together to stand up to him, and his prima dona crap didn't derail the film.
I'm sad this couldn't be retained in the sequel. I don't quite know what happened there. All the pieces were there, but it didn't quite come together. Charlie's Angels 2 seemed too eager to spell out what it was about, and that's never a good choice for a movie. Figuring out what a movie is saying is the audience's job. If you explain what it means, we're cheated out of the best part. I With the first Charlie's Angels, the more vocal part of the audience may not have immediately picked up with the film was laying down, and so I understand the impulse to make it clearer. But that kind of reactive film making rarely works out, and usually spells disaster. I think playing catch-up to what you think the audience wants is always a mistake. That's not why we go to the movies. If the artist doesn't know what to do, the audience certainly can't tell them. Artists have to look inward, and trust what they find.
It's also possible that the collaborative atmosphere of the first film gave way to egos in the second, with McG or whoever else vying for more creative control, to realize their "vision," and I get that too. But again, in a collaborative medium, that's a mistake. Too many sequels are killed when brilliant collaboration gives way to power-struggles. Everyone in film chose this frustrating business because they their creative voice to be heard. But when the final product becomes less important than creative egos, you no longer have a film, you have a Frankenstein's monster, a bunch of mismatched pieces of clashing ideas pretending to be a single film.
I'm really glad to have seen this video. It reminds me how much I love this film, and how long it's been since I've seen it. Will definitely have to pop it back in soon.

I really think the fact that it was Drew and her producing partner Nancy that developed the pitch for the film shows in the final result. Even if it’s a “Male-directed female-led action film” the amount of things that aged badly versus aged well about it comes across really well compared to other films from that general time period with that same basic description. Though there are some bad things that have come out over the years (not only the Bill Murray thing, but also producer Amy Pascal having one of her several racism scandals that have popped up in her career - with this film it was how she conducted herself about letting Black actresses be considered for an Angel role), I still hold Charlie’s Angels near and dear to my heart for the fact that it gave me everything I could want to see as an admirer of maximalist art, and made me feel as a child like maybe I could do anything and have it all, just like the Angels. 😇

I love Charlie's Angle's. It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such as the concept and theme due to it's witty and clever dialogue and humor, comedic moments, emotional resonance, and performance's by the cast. It has this fun, splashy, positive, upbeat, and carefree tone and element. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍💯👍😎

I too think that it is a great film that knows what it is about and go 100% in everything: color, action, fight scenes.
I also love the characters because they exude confidence and have a great life, great friends, great everything plus they don't need to complain or don't need men to be overly badly represented to shine.
They are better than competent men in the movies and it only makes them look stronger as opposed to many movies were the authors strangely enough feel obligated to show men in a mean spirited way.
I ll always defend Mcgee and drew Barry Moore version, plus it has Crispin Glover in it and 8 love this actor.

I watched this yesterday and the thing that sets it apart from the remake is seen in the opening scene.
In this version the plane scene and introductions set it up as goofy, over the top and fun with characters who don't need to prove themselves.
In the remake they went straight to the 'woman' card in a scene that could be in ANY other action movie. the characters are dressed the same except for one and the actors looked like they were told to ACT like they're having fun but in the this version it seems like they were having fun.
This movie was made for entertainment the other was made with a message.

@@LadyJenevia I regularly move in circles - at best they are expanding and it's more like a dance.
The CHARLIE'S ANGELS movies did not only give me the badass women I had been dreaming of ever since reading adventure books for boys from 12 as an 8 year old girl - but it also seemed to be possible to be BOTH badass and hot, and that love was not for nice ladies with manners only.
While the FOOO lived the dream life of a generation of Partridge Family fans for real (and for reel - so I can watch half a decade later) - I keep wondering whether a group of 15 year old girls could have done something similar.
I am old now, but with the internet I find so much to see and listen to each day, and I even can reply and my replies might be read.
Overtired right now, as I spent much too much time virtually partying at home on my couch with the FOOO instead of going to bed early ruclips.net/video/2sD93JHlH4k/видео.html

I love this movie with all my heart, and people today REFUSE to even watch it because of the 5 second shot of Drew in brown face. Yes it’s problematic, but the 2000’s was a chaotic problematic time, but it was also a fun time. They didn’t think twice about little stuff like that when shooting this kind of film. The ONLY thing I disagree with the film is McG’s choice to keep Bill Murray after his behavior behind the scenes; but it was a different time, and Lucy and McG both GOT OVER IT and kept working! That’s what I love about this movie, it’s crazy fun during a period where people didn’t have the time or energy to be offended by anything and everything.

People saying "it was made for men" is extremely confusing to me. A LOT of men don't really care for the franchise at all? It was clearly made for women and female empowerment. Before these films, they didn't have action movies for women. It literally opened so many door for actresses and the film industry in general. Like... what?? It was made for men how?? Because they're s3xy and sometimes wear s3xy clothes?? That must be just some bitter people not understanding a woman *CAN* be beautiful, s3xy, strong, and smart all at the same time for some reason?!
A women can be s3xy and also a total bad🍑, its not a crazy concept.. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Also, the whole "no gun rule" is soooo cool and something I didn't even notice until the second film. I love what it adds to the films and I love why they did it! I was a very young girl when this came out and idolized them! The last thing I thought of when pretending to be an Angel as a child is getting a fake gun!

  • @NiGHTSaturn

I’ve said this many times. In the industry, the amount of times older women have expressed their concerns about no longer being cast at a certain age, imagine the chance we could have had to finally test this out and complete the trilogy with the original three. Who cares if they’re “too old”? They are still gorgeous and badass. Also the fact that Elizabeth Banks has said pretty nasty sexist stuff about men in general BEFORE she got the rights to the project was a HUGE red flag. The original movie is loved by all sexes and ages. It’s a love letter to Technicolor, there’s just the right amount of action, humor, sexyness… It’s always a fun ride. I’m never bored when I watch the movie. It’s so beautiful in 4K ❤️. 17:33 Drew’s statement is EVERYTHING i’m talking about.

So once Zack Snyder said something along the lines of, " your view by virtue of it being solely yours had unique value. That's like your selling point." Something like that.
