  • I don't love Canada, which gets a lot of mileage (kilometrage if you will) out of not being as bad as the USA in some regards and formally distancing itself from the Grand Powers of France and England (as distanced as we can get with their monarch on our currency -- let's not get carried away here!) who wound us up and pointed us in our current trajectory prior to our being cut free. Certain of our major industries (mining and energy, I'm looking at you) actively cause a lot of harm out there in the world (real estate, conversely, is hard at work harming every Canadian resident) and we like to think a lot of ourselves about how we're The Best because we're not The Absolute Worst (except where we are, like with per capita energy use, housing costs, and wireless cellphone data prices.)
A lot of the stories we like to tell ourselves about What It Means To Be Canadian and The Qualities That Define Us assume that you live somewhere in Southern Ontario within a day's drive of Quebec... and also that you're white and straight. And, OK, if you don't care about hockey then... OK, what have we got here... at least we have Medicare to fall back on -- but don't get too attached to it! "You can go to the hospital when you're sick without going bankrupt" isn't exactly a distinctive rock to build a national identity on, in any case -- fundamental, sure, but there needs to be something more.
So anyway, Canada Day comes around every year, and I'm torn about the correct way to musically acknowledge the occasion without being complicit in those aspects of Canada that I don't want to encourage or promote. My plan was to play you a scolding Buffy Sainte-Marie song, but, eh, this has not been her year. So for my Plan B, here's a cherished generational NFB memory, loved despite basically being a militantly heterosexual resource extraction anthem. (And they call the left "joyless"!)
