Hind's Hall (Macklemore, 2024) ... played on accordion!

  • There has been maybe one week during which Macklemore was not uncool during the past decade, and did I go and hustle recording this cover song to elapse during that week? Please, you can't rush me. In many regards, I would most prefer to do something not when it would be best-received, because I am a self-sabotaging contrarian. But when my family headed out to the pro-Palestine rally last weekend (and I stayed home with the puppy, who we have established is not yet rally-compatible), I wanted to do something on a similar wavelength, so I recorded a cover of this recent song. There have been thousands of songs on the subject written over the last 75 years or so, and I don't think that any of them have managed to break into the popular sphere until two months ago. ("Why not?" is a perhaps interesting question I am not prepared to engage in this little blurb.)
Anyhow, while it is now several verses behind in the American Politics beat, when it dropped in May "Hind's Hall" was still a fresh slice of basically unprecedented sentiment coming from a most unexpected source (but then sometimes possibly it takes someone with nothing to lose to speak their conscience without fear of the consequences.) My adaptation is necessarily ... crude. The accordion is a blunt instrument to fill in for the entire instrumental side of a rap production, and my clumsy, unpracticed flow is the only one I have to lean on to convey the dense lyrical content. In the past I have had a lot of fun unexpectedly delivering hip-hop in acoustic arrangements, but without at least a bit of percussion to hold the rhythm, it's rough going! Basically, I recommend you listen to the original instead.
Let's please try to keep our commentary here to musical criticism -- this far after Oct 7, we can safely assume that no one's on the fence anymore, and if you find that you're on the other side of that division from me, we can take it as a given that you're probably not going to change my mind on the subject and I'm very likely not going to change yours. I don't need to see the arguments, I assure you that I have seen all of them many times and I just don't find them convincing.
