  • Together with my dear colleague, Gus, I discuss the art of demoing games at shows, specifically CGE's approach to running game tables at conventions, and how it is different from making how-to-play videos, writing rulebooks, or just teaching games to friends.

I'm so glad you did this video, and since I was directly involved in bringing this demo method to CGE, I was curious to see how it evolved.
I didn't expect the shout out. Thanks so much!
BTW: The official name of the method is "The Gaming Rules! interactive drip-feed method for teaching people how to play games at conventions." - rolls off the tongue!

Thank YOU Paul 🥰 We wouldn’t do this topic and not mention you! Maybe one day we can actually have a chat on camera about how to play videos 😉

I had the amazing and humbling experience of having Gus demo-teach a prototype game of mine that he had played just once! I showed him my game at Dice Tower west, and then had the opportunity to show it again on line with Gus and a senior developer and, being very nervous, asked Gus half joking if he'd like to teach it - and he said okay! It was incredible seeing him effortlessly teach a game I had had so much difficulty teaching it in the past, as I over-explained all the rules and got lost in the minutia. I definitely took away some valuable lessons from the experience. Thank you, Gus!

Great call out to Paul. Watching his content has led me to adopt this way of teaching games as well. Its a great way to teach most games out there, and not just at conventions.

I was a CGE Demo IMP at Pax Unplugged and Origins and loved this method. I liked how I told people in Arnok exactly what to do each of your first two turns while explaining to everyone the rules and even strategy and end game goals as part of this. Then the 3rd turn I made suggestions or like 2 choices but let people decide their own turn. I have tried to take this method when teaching other games where we go through sample turns for each player as I explain the rules.

iirc, Wingspan and Root have play guides that walk you through the first two turns and then give subtle suggestions for the third. I feel like this style works really well with worker placement games because it’s hard to really tell where workers go if you are just reading a rule book or listening to someone talk for 5+ minutes!

Thanks, Eleni. That was a thought-provoking interview. I imagine that some of the techniques can be adapted for teaching games more effectively, even outside the convention setting. By the bye, do you know yet whether you'll be at PAX Unplugged in December?

    Great insight!
I‘d like to see the 5 minute method with “Deal with the Devil“, though ;)

Thank you! Oh, actually we also talked about Deal with the Devil as well with Gus in the video (but I chose to keep it short so I didn't include it) and in my opinion this method can work perfectly well here too as the game is very thematic and intuitive ;)

Nice interview ! Like the method to introduce (not actually learning) a game !
