I have done numerous test-drives of the 2018 Macan S and the 2018 base Macan, and I agree with you that the Macan S is not sufficiently better than the base Macan to warrant the extra cost. I think that the base Macan is fine, and indeed in the USA, it appears that about 80% of all the Macans sold are base Macans. The options get expensive really fast, and in the USA, once can spec out a $50k base Macan to the tune of $120k (i.e., $70k options for a $50k vehicle). Crazy. I at first was going to special-order a Macan S, but after I spent time driving both vehicles several times on the same day for comparison, I just could not justify the extra expense, and I'm special-ordering a base Macan.
Nobody talks about it, but I really miss the loss of two audio/media features that have been eliminated in 2019 Porsches that were present in earlier 4-door Porsches: the CD player, and the Jukebox (the latter conveniently storing tons of music that you load into the car's computer system.

To everyone complaining about the power you need to know that this car does the 0-100 quicker than the first gen cayenne s which had 340hp.
You really feel the lack of power in higher speed. The problem is price to performance ratio, the Macan S really does not cost that much more (it’s objective but not much when you can afford the Macan 4 cylinder)

Bean you will save a lot on gas with this engine, if you do more than 500 km/week you will end with a lot of savings.
Fantastic review! Personally, I love the updated Macan - just improving on an already brilliant vehicle. Love the interior (with all the pushable buttons too) - feels much more like a drivers car compared to any of the Macan's competitors.

Beige or bright interior is ALWAYS a must for me. It’s very inviting and uplifting. Also very elegant and upscale.
But it get dirty faster.
RE: Base model or "s". I have driven both extensively but eventually bought the base model (because I had got and extremely good price on it and it fit my budget). With that in mind, this review is exactly right - kinda humming and hawing about the engine. That's how I feel. It is totally fast enough, but the car feels more special in the larger engine. But here's the funny thing. When I drive the S model in the city, sport mode is too much and not much fun so I leave it in normal (you can barely touch the gas pedal without going over speed limit, and the interior noise gets quite loud). The base model on the other hand is fun to drive in sport mode when in the city (higher revs, better response). I also find that the base model in sport mode is about 4 l/100 better than the S model. Price no object, I'd go S model - only for the few times a month I may want to just drive for fun. My point is, as a daily driver, you're not missing much at all with the base - and it actually might be more fun and suitable for city driving. But from an emotional standpoint, the S (or higher) is better. Ultimately buying a Porsche is an emotional purchase to begin with, and there's the rub :)

I finally collected my first-ever Porsche, a Macan S in Dolomite Silver, a few days ago. Still learning to operate all the controls, menus and buttons ! A solidly-build car that is re-assuring and fun to drive. Thanks Thomas and Autogefuhl !

Really appreciate this review. Especially comments on differences of naturally aspirated, larger displacement engines. I like idea of S model but 1 sec doesn't seem to justify additional overall cost.

Very well done test and informative in all respects. I had an Cayenne S in the past and really enjoyed the power. I therefor would go for the bigger engine of the Macan S. But nothing wrong with the base model ! Superb Porsche !!

Driving a 2018 with 2.0 engine. Original MSRP was $47K USD + $13K in options; but the dealership had put 9K miles on it, using it as a loaner. So, I was able to buy it for $45,500. Warranty goes to 2024. No “animal leather”. 18-inch wheels (absorbs road irregularities better, I think). Big $$ options on original window sticker were Premium Package Plus ($5950) and Connect Plus ($1700). Especially in Sport Mode, it accelerates all I need it to do and that at 25-26 mpg.

Autogefühl ... I was thinking of your opening question about whether the Base Macan would provide the Porsche experience. If someone had been driving a 6 cylinder turbo “with frequent hard acceleration, they would notice the difference, of course (there’s a concept in psychology called “ just noticeable difference”), but, for me, even having once owned a Boxster, this 2.0 never lets you forget what marque you’re driving. If I hadn’t found this particular CPO example, I would have bought a 2019 Base with limited options-maybe panoramic roof. But I agree with you about not inflating the purchase price with large wheels that make the ride harsher.
I will be keeping my 2015 Macan S. No problems 56K miles and so fun still!! I love it and its paid off so off I go..I do not have the adaptive cruise control but my wife's 2018 Audi S5 does and it is not that great.

Every manufacturer runs out of ideas and clumsily makes a ridiculous light strip of its taillights. And the dated wheels are a fatal flaw in my book.
Digiphex Electronics porsche has had a light bar since the 1960’s so hardly run out of ideas with this one
Digiphex Electronics totally agree the 1st gen had really cool rear light clusters in 3 D and now it looks horrible in their plain light bar configuration

Not liking the rear light strip, it makes it look narrower (just like on Audi A7).
Overall it's still just an older Q5 well paid-off... So for sure it's easy money for Porsche
sebxx I don’t like that either. My reason on this specific Porsche is because that rear light design make it look like a Lincoln. In general I think that single LED stripe is a poor solution from the designers, sooner than later you’ll see it in every car, just think about it, even the Bugatti Chiron has that, A7 as you mentioned, A8, Porsche 911, etc. They’re not even trying.

I like the overall facelift, especially the interior but if Porsche is going to use a VW 4 cylinder they need to use the 300hp version not the GTI version. Shame.
I like the Macan's design but all the competitors are much cheaper and have more room. I would compare this to the BMW X3 30i M sport. The BMW is 12k dollars less comparably equipped. What do you think Thomas?

I like the color combination, but i would go even further with a light silver metallic and cream/ivory interior. Silver and white-ish ivory. After writing the comment i realized what Thomas is wearing. Exactly that color combination on a car. I've always had black cars and beige interior, next i'll go with Thomas's colours for the car.

My mom has this in white and tan interior just like this one and she loves it but we have a suede interior and a clock
White exterior paint and beige interior is OK, but "Thomas" blue paint and beige interior (preferably a little darker) are definitely the finest combination on a car like this :)

Great review as always Thomas however I believe as with the pre-facelift the PASM does not lower the car by 15mm. PASM in other Porsche models does indeed lower the car. The GTS has a lower 15mm suspension or if you get Air suspension then it’s lower by 10mm at standard level or 20mm lower on ‘low’ level. Macan ride height is very complex and a topic of lots of discussion on the Macan Forum website ! As for ride quality, 20 inch or less is ok with steel or PASM but 21 inch you should really get Air suspension. Also as you said, if you are a bigger person or sit legs spread then the comfort seats are certainly more comfortable than the sports seats as the side and thigh bolsters are quite aggressive. It would also be a good feature to have the letters beside the gearshift light up to tell you which gear you are in easily as the gear position on the center dial is quite small and difficult to read. How do you know the power of the facelift turbo ? 440hp. Do you have some secret information that you let us know ?

I'd have to opt for the 6cyl. s version and just get the chrono and beige interior. The cost will still be a lot lower than the 4cyl. optioned up and I'll smile more when I have to pass those long tractor trailer trucks. Good review as always.

Hello, I need to decide between the Macan S and the X3 M40I:Which one is better for responsiveness and short lag time? If I get the Macan S, it will be without the sport chrono package.Which of these two cars is able to respond better when you need to do a quick acceleration from low speed? (For example, if you are at stop sign and you need to take off very quickly, or if you are entering a highway and you need to raise your speed very quickly, or when you need to do a quick takeover manoeuvre.) As always Thomas another incredible review, one that means a lot as this is one of the cars in which I’m considering to purchase.. Alongside the Audi SQ5 or maybe Range Rover Velar, if the Macan is an option then I think maybe S model would be my choice? As always I love your in - depth reviews one of the best on You Tube..

mark valentine defo worth taking macan for a test drive. I wanted the Range Rover Velar but compared to driving a dynamic Macan the Velar felt like a big boat or van with much poorer build quality

Old tail lights looked better
You can't get those RS wheels on the Base Macan in Canada, the biggest wheel is the 20" Macan Turbo wheel which adds $4790 to the base price.
You need bigger wheels on this to make it look proportionally correct IMO.
This then drives the price up to $65000 for a 4 cylinder/248 hp base model which is now in Mercedes GLC 43 AMG territory. (6 cylinders/twin turbo/390 hp)

Yes it’s a Porsche but it’s a SUV, so the ideal engine would be a nice V6 *diesel* .. yes it’s sacrilege... but a 2.0 Porsche SUV might be for some too
danI43541 couldn’t agree more. I have 1st version Diesel I got last year and what a great car. Yes I miss the petrol exhaust engine sound so I got a cheap 987 boxster for summer fun and noise exhaust. Only £10k for a low mileage clean boxster 06 year. What a bargain

I have q5 2019. It’s very quick and smooth, but I reckon the bigger engine would be better. I have to say that it’s much smoother in the q5, but I would still prefer Porsche as it’s sportier to drive. I would get air suspension in Porsche. I noticed my vw golf was smoother than both. Possibly due to bigger tyres. If you want comfort get q5, it’s rated better than Porsche , but the ideal is air suspension with Porsche six cylinder. The entry Porsche isn’t nice, they make you pay for it. Sorry I mean it is nice but it’s a big step up when you get the better interior. The Porsche 4 cylinder feels faster than the q5, but there both quick, it’s because it’s a bit stiffer than q5 (mine is tfsi) so 0 - 100 in 6.5 secs. Entry Porsche is 6.7 seconds.

I respect your aversion to leather, but for me Alcantara is not the way to go. Porsche should really think about offering more cloth options again as another alternative. Sport-Tex all the way.
I agree that the Sport Tex is really a great one, its just so ridiculous that e.g. in the Boxster/Cayman, they add animal skin instead of leatherette to the dashboard then when you pick a non-leather seating. I mean like wtf, who decided on that?!
Have you at Autogeül tried any hydrogen (fuelcell) cars? Those are interesting me very much lately.

Too small and under powered for my taste. A six cylinder twin turbo would help - but if I'm going to spend over $100K, I'll cry a little (over he added cost) and buy the Cayenne. I am always envious of the Autobahn's speed limits (or lack thereof). Here in North Carolina, the max speed limit is 117 kph.
The most numbnuts thing porsche did was to get rid of the diesel macan, I bet it halved their sales as the petrol versions are gas guzzlers, they should either bring back the diesel or be working on a full electric version to compete with the likes of the jaguar i-pace, audi e-tron etc.
Terrence Long I’m pleased to say I own a 66 reg Macan S Diesel and what a awesome car. For noise exhaust etc I own a cheap boxster 06 for summer fun and noise.
I disagree. Diesels are dirty. Dieselgate killed that concept in Porsche's lineup forever, thankfully. What's needed is an E-Hybrid Macan, not just an all-electric Macan. Porsche's E-Hybrids are amazing technology, with tremendous power and a good bridge between ICE-only and BEV-only cars.
The 4 cyl sounds rough. I agree keep the options off

I second this: all reviews should include night-time views of interior and exterior, and night-time test-drive. It's a pity that Macan doesn't offer the infrared night-vision camera that you can order in the Cayenne and Panamera, as it's a very useful safety instrument that can help prevent accidents. It's also a pity that Macan doesn't offer a CD player option, which Cayenne and Panamera still do in MY2019.

you buy the porsche to get the better engine S model or better and to enjoy going as fast or slow as you want on the right roads. its not practical and you buy something else for that like i did.
