    Great clip - one of those where you're so glad the video was recording!

    That is the best authority announcement that ever there was.

    *The true glory days of ITV (when it properly regional!).* PS: You can't help but realize that the presenters and announcers were all getting a bit sauced live on the big day.

      ITV has finished for me sadly! I don't why they call it ITV now as it's no longer independent it is now national!!!

    Always loved seeing Colin doing the in-vision on Granada.

    I've only just noticed that the IBA caption only showed the Tyne Tees logo and not the name of the station. Something I've not seen on any other start ups.

    Just knew he'd forget to put his mic on! That's alcohol at work!

    Cannot believe we're missing out on the Longbenton High School choir, surely some footage exists?

    Longbenton Christmas choir: how could they homogenise by disolving the identities of the regional areas. It's shocking and sad.

    I always wondered how Colin Weston ever passed the audition to be an announcer at Tyne Tees because he was always getting tongue tied or forgetting to switch on the mic or the lights. He was very popular though even if he came across as incompetent at times.

      Apparently his nickname was 'fluff'. I think this is what endeared him to so many. I remember watching his colleague at Granada, Andrew Brittain, stutter repeatedly while reading the afternoon news. Now that was cringeworthy.

      @@cashcrop70 If you really want cringeworthy, Maria Coyle at Tyne Tees in 1990 took some beating. The 10:30 news completely failed one night, none of the news reports played on cue and they had to abandon it. A decent newsreader would have given some spiel and ended things nicely. Not our Maria, she just looked like a rabbit in the headlights, said "goodnight" and they had to cut away to continuity man Bill Steel (a man who was endlessly slick in a crisis situation, a true pro -- often the only giveaway that something wasn't quite right was him glancing over at the monitors periodically to check how much longer he had to witter on!) who covered for a minute and a half from continuity before leading into the next programme early. Steel actually walked next door to studio 3 half an hour later to read out the news bulletin in full (complete with news reports), Coyle presumably having run off home in a huff...
      This was only a few weeks after the late news had moved from being presented from continuity to the short bulletin studio -- one department came out of it looking professional, the other one not so much!

    Loved it when they started letting him get 'tipsy' on Christmas Day.

    0:16 Wowwww I've not seen or heard that for DECADES!! Tyne Tees (as well as most things about the North East) was neglected by the South until The Tube came along...so if you're not from there you won't get a tingle with it. But us Geordies get it, yeah?

    Quite a ropey start up!
    Very entertaining performance from Colin though.

    He's very posh is our Colin Weston. Sounds like he should be in the RAF.

    • @davidsanderson5918
      @davidsanderson5918 2 года назад +1

      That was the default accent of continuity people on telly in those days. In fact started changing around 1982 with Channel Four and when there was a realisation that it would be a good thing to maybe 'think' of people outside of the South East for a change.

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj 3 месяца назад

      @@davidsanderson5918 Actually Tyne Tees were earlier than that. While their accents were still "poshed up" a bit for TV, Neville Wanless, Kathy Secker and Lyn Spencer were very obviously Northern on-screen on the station in the 1970s.
      And it was even more obvious in the news department. Paul Frost and particularly Alister Harrison had strong local accents as newsreaders - and Harrison had been at the company pretty much from day one.
      TBH though by the standards of the time even Colin wasnt that "posh" - he frequently slipped into a vaguely London accent, including on this clip. Roger Shaw he certainly was not.
