My 4 year old grand-niece saw my shaving brush and asked about it, so I ended up explaining all about how I shave, and found this video to show her. She was very impressed.
I'm italian and here proraso(italian product) cost around 2.8$ , so it is used more than other products from abroad. You should use a bowl! Pick up some soap from green bowl and then use a large tea bowl to create the foam :) Try! You use too much proraso and it's is quite good for face lathering...but 90% of italian prefer lather in a separate bowl and add a little more water ;)
Yes you'r right, we use proraso soap with more water. I buy soap for €2 and after shave 400ml for €12/14. Proraso is my favourite line and here is very chipper.
I use proraso almost exclusively other than Taylor of old bond st, I've tried face lathering but for best results I found a bowl later is the way to go just adding water drops at a time and it comes up almost perfect every time, and using an Edwin Jagger DE89 and a feather blade, it never fails me.
Proraso is an amazing soap really. It did not perform well at the beginning because in general proraso is quite a thirsty soap. It performed better later in your shave because it had more water.. Love your reviews, thanks for posting them.
I have hard water and had pretty much given up on Proraso soap. I had a friend tell me about Kiss my face mint shaving cream and I now put some Proraso and a small pump of kiss my face in my brush for the face lather. Works wonders for the slickness and you still get the great scent, lather, price and availability of Proraso. If you haven't tried Kiss my face you have got to give it a try! Thanks for the great reviews Nick!
Hello Sir, I am new to shaving with a safety razor and purchased all the products you suggested for beginners. You were absolutely right. Thank you so much for speeding up the learning curve and saving me a lot of money. It was also really great of you to give credits to others for their videos. Great job Sir!
Indeed it was some time ago. The soap was decent, but a bit too dry for my liking. Grown a beard in the meantime, so don't shave a lot anymore, but would still recommend something like Razorock instead.
dam dude that was to much soap, you loaded like 5 shaves worth lol. Proraso is a lather monster, it only takes about 10 sec of loading... im not trying to cridicize but that may be ur reason for having a dry post shave. use half the soap and double the water and ull get a more hydrated shave and post shave.
Brilliant Nick, nice to see you revisit this absolute giant of the wetshaving world. I've always had great affection for this soap, cushion and slickness are great (i think your lack of slickness on the first pass was purely down to the sheer volume of soap you loaded, you were moving through 1cm of thick lather, haha). I agree it can be a little drying, not enough for me to see it as a negative, I assumed it was maybe the menthol, I always use a balm anyway. This stuff has endured the test of time and I'm sure will continue to do so. I also love the tub it comes in, great ergonomics.
Proraso is simply one of the very best soaps and their creams are as well. If you like the scent, there really isn't any reason to use anything else. I've been using it for years.
I do exactly what you did up to the point of face lather. Before you hit the face use a bowl to further whisk the product in said bowl. You'll be surprised how much thicker the lather will become and you can add water if it seems too dry.
Nick, I have watched many (not quite all) of your shave videos and I commend you on your open mindedness and honesty. I've been using Proraso for many years and have had great results. I live in Sydney, Australia and have very soft water which could explain the good performance. I agree that you can get a drying, almost tightening feeling in the face. I ensure that I clean off the face thoroughly and moisturise well.
I've used a number of shaving soaps and creams with the same water source, and to date Proraso (white) has been the only one that left a noticeable residue on my razors. Other than that I'd still recommend it.
Man, i have this one and its so good. Its my first shaving soap, because i recently picked wet shaving recently. Have only wet shaved 2 times as of writing this. All i can say is that my mornings now are something i look forward too. Im almost mad now that my facial hair doesnt grow faster so that i can wet shave more haha. Damn ive been missing out shaving only with gillete fusion and barbosol. My set current set up (beginner guy): Merkur Futur, Parker Blades, Proraso Soap, Perfecto Pure Badger brush, Niveo after balm.
I started off with the white flavour and I didn't care for it, then tried the green flavour which does work for me pretty well. Proraso is the first shaving product I started with and does agree with my skin, some haven't, although I do try others based on your recommendations which have also been awesome.
Funny that I watched this after using the same soap this morning!! I'd have to agree with you about the hard water being the culprit behind having a residue on your razor. I love the menthol/eucalyptus with the Proraso, but just hate having that film build up due to the hard water in my area.
hi nick, hope you can help, with soaps like this which come in a container how do you leave the container after loading the brush, just stick the lid on or wash off the excess from the tub? thanks
I think this soap is more of a 'cream'. I haven't used it yet, but looking at it what I'd be inclined to do is get some on the brush and transfer into a separate bowl so it's not too dry, or even dip your finger in and grab an amount. It seems very concentrated and looks like, the Nivea Sensitive cream which is also pretty concentrated. It smells damp or stale in the bowl and I'm pleased you report the aroma is 'alive' with use!
Nick: love your vids. I am pushing 70 and use many straights, creams and soaps including MDC, LPL, ADP, SV and all the artisan stuff from Cadie's, Phoenix, Henri et Victoria, Sterling, Beaver Woodwright, etc. But I still reach for Proraso (white) and aftershave balm at least once a wee. Love the Italian smell and nuance. Keep up the great work. You are awesome; remind me of my 24 yr old son. Best! J
I love me some Proraso, especially the white soap. Smells amazing, feels great on the face, and the lather is quick to work up and creamy. I wish I started with Proraso instead of VDH Deluxe or Col. Conk.
Excellent demonstration of this product! You look like a professional, seriously, with how you apply the shave cream. So i saw this stuff and am now going to purchase it. Thanks a lot for the vid!
Awesome review. I appreciate that you go over the ingredients and I hope you keep doing so. I can't use SLS. I just recently started having break outs and itching from body wash/bath soaps and after making lots of changes and a lot of investigating ingredients I believe I have narrowed it down to sulfate. I prefer natural products anyway and you going over the ingredients keeps me from wasting time and money. I know to check ingredients before I buy but sometimes I'll see something and get excited about trying it then forget to do all the extra research online before ordering. Awesome channel and I like the new review style.
You can find Proraso under the U.S. name at Bath and Body Works. It's called C.O. Bigelow. Cream in the tube only. $5 or $10. I have the cream and the slickness appears to get better with every pass. The first pass never feels as slick as you want. The green smells and feels good.
Hi Nick, I particularly like this product. It reminds me of such a classic shaving scent. I have the pre shave, shave cream as you are using here, and the aftershave. The aftershave is kind of a vetiver scent. I use this when I am in the mood for the classic shaving experience. I have some new wet shavers and currently have it on load to them to see how they like it.
there's no question the difference in soft and hard water. I once had a water softener and hated it. when showering it always felt I never got all the soap off my body always felt slick. for shaving though soft water is a plus.
Hi Nick Great shave as usual. Recently adopted your "feel around method" on the third pass and it works great for me. Lets me get what I missed and avoid the smooth areas I got the first time. Would you mind naming some of those pro inflammatory foods you mentioned. Might help me and some others. Thanks and have a good week.
Prorasso is great. I have the green cream in a tube. lathers up very well. I've switched to bowl lathering lately as the brush I have is agressive with the exfoliation if i face lather. The cream lathers us very easily just like the soap does and I really like the menthol feels great in the morning. I don't use it often right now due to it being winter but during a summer heat wave it'll be my go to alongside the absolutely amazing Nivea. Great recommendation on that I've recommended it to other people and they were shocked at the quality for $3.99 a tube in Canada. Thumbs up on this review. Give the cream a try too!
I am no expert by any stretch but I have very little issue with slickness of any soap besides RR XXX. I have been using the Proraso Green Creme and it is pretty thirsty and it seems to like the water added a bit slowly? Maybe give more water added a bit slower a try? Picked the tip up from Chris from Caties Bubbles in an interview with him.
Im studying abroad in florence, italy where proraso is made. I literally see a proraso product display at every single mini mart or pharmacy. Also its a lot cheaper, I might go and do a tour of the factory if i get the chance
Sweet review brother! If you could only have 2 safety razors, 2 razor blades, 2 shaving soaps, and 2 shaving brushes (1 of each for beginner + 1 of each for intermediate).... what would they be?
This stuff really dries out my skin, unless I'm lathering it wrong. It seems to load up well in my brush. But after the shave, it just dries to no end. It almost ruins the shave, even if I had a good one, because it just dries everything up. I'll have to give it another go. I agree with the lack of slickness. Just ordered my first pure badger brush so perhaps it will result in better performance, I've been using boar bristle for a while.
try and get your hands on the new packaging of proraso products,, they have green white and red lines, the new green is much softer, they did change something
Mason Jar I thought the same thing. I really like the Menthol/Eucalyptus Proraso - it always works well and is a go-to. The Sandalwood Proraso, however, is definitely not as slick, no matter how I lather it or how much water I use. I just can’t seem to use it very often without some level of irritation.
Hi! Michael here in Hudson, Ma. Great video. I’m just experimenting with this product now. So far, so good. I start of with their pre shave. You’re in Massachusetts as well?
Hey Nick try the Proraso Blue Shaving Cream, it really hydrates your skin and combined with the aftershave it really makes you feel you had a great shave, give it a shot! and post a video.
I have seen you use Proraso pre-shave cream before - just use it before your first pass with any proraso shave soap and every pass will be pleasure. great video as usual...
Do you ever use some coconut oil (or something similar) as a preshave, even if only to moisturise your face Nick? Prooaso has larger graduals that need breaking down for the best shave but its a great exfoliating soap but its means its not a smooth postshave feel. But some balm seems to do the trick as long as you use a hot towl to clean your face first before using!
Interesting review. I live next to the border of France and Italy and often see this soap around, but my hubby doesn't like it. Its funny they use SLS in it now, cant imagine that was in the original formula. I wonder how this would perform in harder water?
I related so much to this video. I use the Treet Black Beauty's exactly how Nick described here! In an aggressive razor, it allows for the shave to be close but reduces the chance of cuts. On days where my face is feeling a bit beat up from shaving frequently or maybe I rushed a bit too much with sharp blades, the Treet with a non aggressive razor(Gillette tech style) and I get a smooth comfortable shave. Love treats in my arsenal and I love Poraso.
@nick shaves ... What would you consider the “Rolls Royce” of shaving soaps ? 🧐 I switched to the safety razor a month again and I ended up buying a 5.5oz puck through Stirling and got a wintergreen scent. It’s good but it’s not great either. I got the Van Der Hagen and the soap that it came with was suitable but not fantastic by any means.
Awesome video nick keep it up.I was wondering in what order is the best for post shave or does it matter? I usually go alum, witch hazel, aftershave and last is face lotion.New to wet shaving only been doing it for about 2 months now so any feedback would be awesome thanks again for your videos nick keep it up,
Proraso green was my first soap and I really liked it but I've moved onto a lot of other soaps and creams since then and still haven't finished my first tub. I do return to it every now and then and even used to use it weekly for awhile, but I do find the creams to be better than the soaps when it comes to Proraso products.
I LOVE proraso green. tube that is. almond size drop. not too much water, superb slickness. especially on a rub back. my lather is usually thicker. as with all soaps, gotta find what works. great vids man
I use the Proraso green with a shavette and Darby blades. . I am new to wet shaving this year. It was my first shaving soap. I was looking for something in menthol and it had good reviews on amazon and what seemed like a good price. I really like the way my face felt after the first shave. I have found that sometimes i don't get the lather quite firm enough and i need to re-apply mid pass, I haven't noticed the residue but I wipe my Razor down after each use. I have since stated to try some different samples. I like the Dapper Dragon soap, it makes a really thick cushiony lather for a smooth shave but not a lot of slickness. Is there a trick to making the lather that will increase the slickness?
Nick thanks for giving Proraso a second chance. I will agree the post shave isn't as good as some others such as Stirling and Barrister & Mann. It does have a clean feeling that others just don't have. I consistently get great shaves from this stuff maybe cause I have used it so much. So yes there are slicker soaps, more hydrating soaps, but Proraso Green is just a great soap all around. I do like the White as well and Red, I have not tried the Blue but I am thinking about. Again thanks for the videos and I would like to see more straight razor shaves!!!
Hi Nick. Do you know what the white film is caused by? I am assuming it is a soap ingredient but I wonder if it is intended by Proraso so the film acts a post shave protector of some kind?? Chris
I honestly love your reviews, you are my favorite wet-shave reviewer! Could you review any of "The Art of Shaving" products? I have their their shaving cream & post shave balm, I'd like to know how the other products you use compare to these! Thanks for the great content, keep it up!
Me too... I am Italian and prejudiced to Italian everything... However, I tried the Art of Shaving samples and the results for me seemed significantly better. Would be very interested in seeing an AofS comparison. And yes, the buildup is on my razor as well
So at this point I've watched like 6 of your videos, and I love em! Thanks! I've been shaving with a straight razor (Parker shavette with Derby or Astra blade) and puck (Proraso sandalwood) for the past year (I have a full beard, so I just clean up my neck and cheek line up), and always thought I was doing a good job with the process.I find that the soap leaves a rather dry film on my skin after shaving and on my tools as well -- kind of like what you said. I love the blooming technique that you use, and I cant wait to try it out soon! I'm looking to move towards a double edge safety razor like the iKon 102 you had showed in a previous video, looks slick! I also want to move to a different shaving soap, something with more natural ingredients; and likewise with the aftershave lotion. Thanks a lot buddy, look forward to your future videos.
Hi Nick. The question of the new years eve... after you test a lot of razors and blades, finally, which is for yourself the best razor together with the best blade?. Thank you and happy new year!!
Nick, great video as usual. I was wondering is the Merkur 37C is your go to slant razor? I am looking to step up my game in the razor department as I only currently have one (The free one I got with my Wet Shave Club subscription.) Maybe you could do a "best razor and blades pairing" or a "razors wet shaver needs to have" video? I would love to see your opinion with that. Keep it up!
Hi Nick! Love your reviews. I just started DE shaving and just bought a stack of mixed Proraso soaps and creams to get me started and a Cella to add. I am OK with the Proraso white, green and red, but I am interested in something a bit more slicker. What would be your suggestion? Your Mike's soap review along with the Woolfat looked a good choice. The Bay Rum looks nice too. Thanks Mike in Japan.

I highly recommend the Proraso shave cream. quite a different experience when compared to the croap in the video.
No they haven’t.
Opinions Aside, Proraso Green is the best Soap ever created for wet shaving.
Tabac is the Best but for the money I'd definitely go with Proraso Green.
What are the blueprint pictures you have up in your bathroom and where could one get them?
You loaded way too much and not enough water. It's a very slick soap when it is plenty hydrated and it can take it. Hard to screw up proraso lather.
yes.. more water is needed for this soap
I'd be interested in your views on Proraso sandalwood. it has the best scent of any shaving soap I've tried since starting wet shaving.
Nick - Where do you get your bloom water from that you nornally use.....
I have seen you use Proraso pre-shave cream before - just use it before your first pass with any proraso shave soap and every pass will be pleasure.
great video as usual...
The After Save (Green) from Prorasso ist verry good too.
Nick....Glad you had a better experience this time with proraso. Welcome to the fan club... It's quite crowded
+Nadeen Sivic ah - just heard your comment re Chicago at the end. Might be why the hubby doesn't like it. cheers for the review.
Love treats in my arsenal and I love Poraso.
what kind od shave brush is that
@nick shaves ... What would you consider the “Rolls Royce” of shaving soaps ? 🧐
I switched to the safety razor a month again and I ended up buying a 5.5oz puck through Stirling and got a wintergreen scent. It’s good but it’s not great either. I got the Van Der Hagen and the soap that it came with was suitable but not fantastic by any means.
Who knew there was such an art to shaving!
nearly or all an art to anything!
Which soap is better for you? Arko or Proraso green?
When should I choose the 'slant' razor, Nick? I'm skittish about it, as it just seems odd.
Review the gillette sliver blue please.
Hi nickshaves the proraso soaps are amazing really slick it is like shaving without a blade well impressed with it
Awesome video nick keep it up.I was wondering in what order is the best for post shave or does it matter? I usually go alum, witch hazel, aftershave and last is face lotion.New to wet shaving only been doing it for about 2 months now so any feedback would be awesome thanks again for your videos nick keep it up,
Proraso green was my first soap and I really liked it but I've moved onto a lot of other soaps and creams since then and still haven't finished my first tub. I do return to it every now and then and even used to use it weekly for awhile, but I do find the creams to be better than the soaps when it comes to Proraso products.
hi Nick. have you ever try Wilkinson Sword shaving soap? its very cheap in UK and you can get in amazon.
Is there a trick to making the lather that will increase the slickness?
what brush and soap do you recommend if I have hard water?
+himay sheth I would be interested in seeing that as well.
Me too... I am Italian and prejudiced to Italian everything... However, I tried the Art of Shaving samples and the results for me seemed significantly better. Would be very interested in seeing an AofS comparison.
And yes, the buildup is on my razor as well
I love the Proraso white, I like the red but I am disappointed from the green, either cream and soap! No slickness at all makes shaving difficult!
Nope you don't need more water, you need less soap ;-)
gotta use the after shave balm.
Good stuff, this is the one I really like. Their green after shave is really good too!
Thanks for the review. Great job staying in shape👍
I've only used green. Definitely a favorite.
Keep it up!
proraso green is still my fave, cella is a close second.
Are you going to a shaving beard contest??
