You know on rewatching this something occurs to me. When Shaggy released his friends souls they wound up in the wrong body. Then ALL the souls in that bowl including presumably the people who'd already left the island and are scattered all over the globe get dumped out at once. So its pretty much guaranteed a lot of them are not in their original bodies at this point.

This movie was apparently originally going to be darker and more adult, but the studio Warner bros wanted the movie to be more kid friendly and be more like the cartoon. It does explain a lot of the movies weird mood swings and inconsistent tone.
It seems like almost every time a movie sounds better than it looks, the studios in all their "genius" have to swoop in and f*** it up.

FYI, the cartoons have established that Scooby and some other animals are able to talk or partially talk because they are descendents of aliens called Annunaki that possessed some animals many years ago. Matpat covered it in a recent video. The Scooby Doo lore is surprisingly deep

Gonna have to take off a sin as I do recall a scene in which right after they disbanded, they all left in different cars. Shag and Scob in the Mystery Machine. Daphne in a pink-sh sports car, Fred in his own car, etc.
Yeah, but how did all of those cars end up there in the first place when they went as a team?
Then a sin for them taking 4 different cars.
It wasn't in the film, but the easiest explanation is that they went home to their separate Apts./houses (though it's clearly implied Shag & scob live in the van) and Velma as usual cracked the case by having remembered something she saw earlier. Deciding it was time to wrap up the case, they all decide to meet at the toy factory that night. So, they each drove there. Shag & Scob in the Mystery Machine, and the other three in the different vehicles each one owns. Sometimes the most realistic explanation is the easiest one.

Perhaps. Another thing to keep in mind is that this is no longer the psychodelic era. Those values would not exist during the time the film came out. Four friends and their dog living a communal lifestyle and traveling all over the place in a van, taking mind-altering drugs and hooking up with each other? That's not going to work anymore.

Old Scooby Doo episodes are literally teens wandering around making hijinks with a surprise reveal at the end. They might have a couple clues in there to be spotted but it has more in common with Looney Tunes than like a detective series
Matthew Lillard was born to play Shaggy, even if it had to be in a crappy movie. Also, I think it's commendable that this movie chose Scrappy as the main villain. It's a Godsend of a notion that after this movie we would technically never have to put up with him anymore

My only nitpick is, this actually does follow scooby doo movie/cartoon rules. Scooby movies are almost always a real supernatural entity, the cartoons are almost always a real person behind things.

I watched the cartoon a lil when I was a kid but other than Velma being the smart younger one, Shaggy and Scooby seemed like the only characters with personalities. I never noticed much with the other three so to see them try to develop them in these movies seem difficult.

The crazy part is that Fred wasn't an idiot on the original show. He was the leader jock but was never stupid. You are right that he did always go with Daphne. There is a great joke on one of the later shows that have them mix up the teams. When Fred and Shaggy are alone they have nothing to talk about.
