    ** Inside The L Word Scripts, Set Visits, Contracts, Behind the Scenes **
    Jess is joined by L Word historians Ash Silver (@theashsilver) and Chris Lintner (@thelwordonline). Chris shares her story of getting confronted by Ilene Chaiken in Vancouver for putting pieces of the scripts online in 2006 and Ash reveals how she ingratiated herself to Showtime folks present day, getting invited to the Gen Q set several months ago. Together, we discuss actor contracts, why Sepideh Moafi (Gigi) left, the truth behind Erin Daniels (Dana Fairbanks) being written off the show, Mia Kirshner and Rachel Shelley's weirdness towards Gen Q + more behind the scenes sapphic chaos!

    "I think we all learned a lot" 😂 I love these vids with behind the scenes info on The L Word. Hearing the last part of this video reaffirms why GenQ is really not giving what they thought it would. And also seeing bits from Marja interview with Jess it OBVIOUS, she does things to just tick boxes. There's no fixing GenQ with her running it. I'm sad that Jennifer, Illene and co. ( the reason the reboot exists) worked so hard to bring the show back only for it to be in this situation. Anyways , now I'm looking forward to this Tibette wedding ep and I'll be done with this show. I'll go back to re-watching the OG 1-2 times a year. And I'm good with that. Thanks for this in-depth interview

    Excellent interview. I think the producers, Jennifer, Leisha, Kate and Ilene, like the fans, are as disappointed with the reboot as we are. The new show is nothing like I pictured or hoped it would be. Thank goodness Jennifer stood her ground and, at least, we are finally getting a wedding. GenQ is not a show that interests this older fan and even if it's renewed I don't think I'd watch it. It has no substane and no connection between characters like the original series had.

      I loved Sarah Shahi too! When I first read about this (not long after GenQ started) I couldn’t believe it. Since when do we as fans check the heritage of an actor against the character that they are playing? And btw, she does have Spanish blood, so there’s that.

    The group scene comment is so accurate. This show was always about the female friendships (and family too, I miss the dynamic Kit brought as Bette's sister!) as much as the love relationships and that was the magic. The only time I get a sense of that magic in GQ is when the OG cast are in a room together. I find it both sad and totally wild that JB fought so hard to bring this show back and has left already. (I feel that she has a strong moral compass so can only imagine the reasons could truly be behind it.) I find it wild that this show coming back was a dream and now I almost wish I'd never seen it. I can't wrap my head around them opening this reboot with Bette and Tina divorced (why couldn't they just be married, navigating life with a teenage daughter) with Kit dead, without bringing back willing OG cast like Carmen (hell, we wanted Carmen back back in the OG), with Jenny declared a suicide...and three seasons in I care more about Dana's cat than any of the new characters. I appreciate Ash's pragmatic take on the decisions and blame resting on the shoulders of Showtime (who seemingly don't see the worth in properly paying women to play lesbians in a lesbian show and obviously want to get by on the bare minimum that will allow them to take in subscriptions!) But there is definitely something missing from GQ, whether it be that magic, or a lack of soul from those driving the show, or a completely lack of understanding of what they have in their hands.

      Yes, that’s it! There is no beginning or end to most of the new characters’ stories (and most often we know very little about them at all). Your use of “lack of soul from those driving the show” summed it up perfectly for me. They are feeding the WLW fans crumbs trying to earn ST subscriptions and reactions on their ridiculous SM posts, then delivering so little content that is important or even interesting to us. I have started using the term “deceptive advertising” bc that’s exactly what it is when you compare their posts (especially the recent ones) to what is actually being delivered.

    @ghju Год назад +6

    Fanfiction time! Please let me have my 5 minutes of crazy or dry January is gonna turn into Will Ferrell in Old School real quick 😶
    Plot twist: Jennifer recognized that Sepi has that x factor and such potential it would be highlighted in an actually well written show that has the vibes of what the OG was.
    Seeing how fucked up it turned out to be under the new team (Showtime, Marja, her squad of writers from hell, the Q cast...) she with Laurel, Leisha and Kate quickly realized it would never improve and become what they had in mind for a reboot. Especially with that obstinacy to reject some of the OG cast and what they did to some others like Kit and Jenny.
    But since Sepi is worth "poaching", Jen found a way to have Sepi be let go of her obligations with minimal career/image and money damage in case of the show being renewed, knowing that she'd follow with Laurel and possibly Kate and Leisha at some later point.
    Meanwhile, they've been conspiring, possibly with Ilene, and planning a complete makeover of that absolute clownery of a show with producing a new one, or a movie elsewhere.
    Now if you don't mind I'm gonna go back into my cave where I left my tinfoil hat and my meds and Marja and the Q mob can't ever locate me.

    Jess wonders why L Word still has this effect on our lives after 20 years. I think it's the same as how Batman many Star Trek, Star Wars and Superman still has grandpa crying in the theater when their hero gets pummeled. The same as grandma gossiping with neighbor about General Hospital soap characters. Seasons 1 thru 6 of L Word will remain #1 with women forever.

    I enjoy watching all of yall. This was really good. Also I can't imagine Jennifer Beals having any "beef" with anyone. Like someone said she's always so zen and positive. I've actually seen her years ago at an L Word event. Although she was a bit guarded because the crowd was massive, she was a sweetheart. I begged (I'm not ashamed. Best night of my LIFE) her for a pic and to my surprise she obliged me. Jennifer is my absolute fave on that show. I love her scenes with Sepi. Sucks that things were not great behind the scenes. I wish ppl could model after the love and respect that Jennifer and Laurel have for each other. Their friendship in real life just melts on screen with their characters. I feel like that's what makes TiBette different compared to these new characters. Anyway, great video. I could watch yall all day ❤️

      Everyone has opinions I guess, but I totally agree with you. I just can’t see it. Jennifer is such a pro and she’ll always have other opportunities no matter what. There would be no reason for her to be jealous of Sepi. If anything, I see her as more of a mentor. I liked Sepi, and I realize she was by far the most popular, attractive new character. But she’s a bit of an unpolished diamond at this point. Not her fault, because they never gave her character a chance to be anything but inconsistent and annoying (Nat/Alice/Bette/Dani/Nat???) But a Jennifer Beals/Bette Porter? Not even close.

    Excellent interview! So enjoyed hearing Chris’ stories from the early days of the OG LWord! I need to listen again & make notes on everything from you three 😄 Two things I’ve observed and agree with that people don’t talk about bc they seem, idk, almost afraid of it:
    1) The focus on trans characters on the show; seems like this is part of my point #2 marketing. I know there were good intentions bc Max’s character wasn’t well-represented in the OG, but they wasted massive amount of screen time on a boring, uninteresting character/storyline in Micah. (And also on straight relationships w/Alice & Tom & Angie & Professor but that’s a different topic). But why? When GenQ began, Micah was part of the friend group. Cool. But I think ST saw a big positive at the time on SM reactions w/GenQ fans (pre-Maribel) & said, “Oh, we’ve got something here!” Then the friend group got blown up w/the Sophie/Dani breakup & they thought how else can we score points? Answer: put Micah w/Maribel, a handicapped person. Again, a big reaction on their social media at the time.
    2) Marketing (General) - As Ash has mentioned, their official site was fan friendly in S1 & S2 when Kelsey (?) was running it. It has been abysmal for S3! I tuned out for most of this season, but had been seeing LOTS of negative comments. Stuff like not funny or cute, what happened to the other girl? etc
    Then just before the finale dropped there was an explosion of stuff not just about the wedding, but specifically about Bette & Tina. Why?? The wedding wasn’t even mentioned in the official synopsis for the show. B&T had scarcely any screen time. There’s only one reason - to drum up last-minute interest in the show & get “hits” on IG. MLR even posted how proud she was of the episode, but I think she had to limit visibility to her IG account bc of the negativity. If she truly believes that making people dislike her will help GenQ, mission accomplished! I guess she, and ST, as you guys pointed out, subscribe to the school of “all publicity is good publicity” school of thought.
    Sorry this turned into a rant, but I’ve wanted to voice these observations in a safe space for awhile now.

    I find it ridiculous that Sepi is leaving the show, only to later realize that Jennifer is also leaving.
    There's a strange feeling that Gigi may be back. Her story was left too open. If Sepi was definitely leaving, why didn't they give her character a clearer and more definitive closure?
    We might think that they didn't, to use it to their advantage and keep fans awaiting her possible return. In other words, they used it in a deceptive way. In that case, they are sinister and play with people.
    Nor am I convinced that the reason Sepi is still in the credits is merely by contract. If she was determined to go and Showtime and the showrunner were determined to let her go, they could have either terminated her contract or paid her what was due until the day they decided to let her go. They could have agreed to an agreement to say nothing until the end of the series, and that's it.
    i don't know of cases of actors who have left a series, in which their name continued until the end. It is different if it is a pregnancy, an illness or a temporary leave, like the case of Yasmin Al-Bustami in NCIS Hawaii, who had to leave for 4 months because she has another work in progress.
    Many have the feeling that Sepideh was able to walk away until Jennifer left and then come back without causing conflict.

    • @lesliephillips3980
      @lesliephillips3980 Год назад +1

      My opinion only, of course, and by now the finale has dropped but I haven’t seen it yet (will tomorrow) - I think they (probably Showtime (?) is using Sepi’s unexplained absence to an unfair and deceptive advantage to keep viewers. They know the ratings are lagging and are doing everything possible to encourage people to subscribe to ST, to react to their ridiculous IG posts, etc. But all of that may not matter anymore. The reactions I’ve seen/read about the finale are at the best disappointment and at the worst rage. And as the word spreads about what MLR said during Jess’ very fine interview (don’t know how she kept her composure) even newer fans who were supportive of GenQ in the past are now very upset with her attitude.

    • @iatinom22
      @iatinom22 Год назад +1

      @@lesliephillips3980 I honestly don't know if we're ever going to really know what happened, especially with Sepideh. But it is evident that everyone knows that she was the person who generated the most interest, besides the originals, so they continued to use her until the end.
      I think Sepi is the big winner in this whole situation. The one that has earned the most respect. I am going to follow her in all her projects because I find her super talented. She also has angel, she is an interesting person to watch and listen to. The complete opposite of MLR 🙄.
      I think if we ever find out more about what happened, it will be through other people. Once the say-nothing agreements are up, someone's going to open their mouths. However, I don't think it's Sepi. I feel that she is not the type of person who likes to talk about labor conflicts. She's gaining a reputation, having more work projects, and I don't think she wants to ruin all of that by airing problems.
      I really believe that if at any point she says something on the subject, because it is very likely that someone will ask him, she will say it in a very elegant way and perhaps without giving too many details.
      She is also trained in theater, she is low profile. I think she wouldn't want to draw attention for some conflict and the risk of being seen as a troublemaker.
      I think it's possible that Kate or Leisha will say something now that the series is over, because they are already airing things on their podcast. They don't name names, but it's clear they're pointing to MLR and how bad it does things. The disappointment of the OGs is very noticeable.

    Oof, I gotta lot to say about GenQ. First off, The L Word was and still is one of the most beautiful, memorable, best written shows EVER. GenQ was just seriously horrible and it's sick and sad they turned LA lesbians/LGBTQ into this woke neon commercial 💩show into a parady. The story lines really had no depth, no truth no beauty. I'm so sad and disgusted that these producers ruined our favorite characters from The L Word. I mean, i was totally and thoroughly invested in these women! It was beautiful and cathartic watching The L Word being from LA myself and having had to leave after the riots, seeing strong independent women for the first time in LA where these beautiful women were not strung out on drugs or in the hood, such a revelation. My heart actually hurts to see my favorite ladies involved in GenQ knowing full well they had to know how horrible the writing was and it basically destroyed the legacy of The L Word! I'm so sad and so angry about it really. I can't imagine Jennifer, Laurel, Kate, and Leisha are happy with the outcome or even proud of it I just don't buy that they are too smart.

    My mind is still blown by the Sepi and Jennifer drama. Not in a hundred years I would’ve thought the reason she was leaving was because of drama backstage. They both seem so zen? My theory is maybe Jennifer didn’t like Sepi’s improv choices like groping her butt 😬

      What’s odd is Jennifer shares Sepi’s post.

      I have the same theory about the butt grope. I don't think Jennifer would've agreed to that nor appreciated the improv. I really do believe that was the catalyst because you notice they break up soon after and things got nasty. Although I loved Gigi/Sepi, I think she might have gotten a little full of herself and put herself on the same level as Jennifer and she might get there eventually, she's certainly not there yet. IMHO
