Love how you over build things. That deck will outlast the pool.
Thank you for watching
Its really looking nice,Andrew
Thank you
Andrew, it's looking good as usual. I always love the overkill. A tow truck driver on youtube named Ron Pratt put it better than anyone else i have heard. "Overkill is underrated these days." I just love overkill.
Overdo is what I do.
Absolutely fantastic Handy Andy but you knew you'd here that from me, Tiffany is a lucky gal to have a genius for a husband be safe and take care
I agree 🤣
Andrew never disappoints! EVER 🙂
Sure I do, just ask Tiffany 🤣
@@TKCL Hahaha 🤣
I so do, enjoy watching you build. The extra work you do, is so worth it.
Thank you so much
It's definitely a unique design and I love it. I just don't know how you manage to work in the full sun. I can't do it anymore. Take care and hopefully I can catch the live tonight.
It's killing me to be honest. I spent as much time cooling off as I did working.
That deck looks like it will definitely weather a hurricane!! Super strong build Andrew, and I can hardly wait to see what its gonna look like when finished!!! Stay hydrated my friend, this heat is stupid right now!!!
It's insane, I'm drinking more fluids than ever before.
That pool deck will look awesome when it is all done. 🤠
Wow, this is amazing, and how you're building this deck. To keep the water away from your floor joists
Thank you for watching
Hi Andrew the deck is really taking shape, looks fantastic and of course very well built, really add to your out door living space. 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
Thank you
That is looking fabulous! Can't wait to see ya'll enjoying this space.
Thank you
Im going to show my dad that ledge around the pool. That would have saved us SO MUCH time when we built a pool deck. Great idea!
Hopefully it's plenty strong enough.
You could park the tractor on that deck! Major support!! 💪💪🚜
I'm not trying it lol.
@@TKCL 🤣🤷♂️
Great seeing you think about parties and overbuild to anticipate that. Every year, we see news stories about a party where 20 or 30 people all show up at a house or apartment party and everybody is out on a deck never designed to handle that much weight. The deck fails and falls off the building and people are horribly injured or killed. Especially in rentals, residents have no concept of load capacity. All they care about is cramming in all their friends. Interior floors also collapse under those conditions as residential homes are not designed to be event spaces. Obviously a tragedy is very unlikely with your low deck but it is still very good to see thinking about it and making darn sure there will never be an issue with the deck.
Agreed and I still should build even stronger.
Oh my that is going to be looking nice 👍🏽..... Can't wait to get my tan going on the pool Deck lol 😆.... Where's The zip line going to drop us off at?🤔🤔🤔🫣
Lol, zip line coming in from the oak tree.
@@TKCL 😳😳😳😳 that's too much speed ..... I'm old and fragile like a flower now ahahaha 😆
Cash did you reserve your spot yet?
We're all waiting for the zip line:)))
Now, serious: I saw on the live that your child has health issues, may God heal her, thoughts and prayers from the other side of the world!!
Another awesome job! Love that you build for the long run! It’s easier to do it right the first time!! Spending money on tape today is cheaper than rebuilding in 10 years.
Agreed
Awesome design. Great job so far!
Thank you
Really nice
Thank you
Thats coming along nicely see you guys tonight at 7pm 👍
Talk to you soon
Looks great....still love the way you explain things and why you are doing them....can't wait for the next stage.
Thank you for watching
Wow, you built an awesome runway for a real cool dive (or bellyflop) into your pool!! Well done!
I agree 🤣
great, my friend, success is always in the work
Thank you for watching
Andrew, your deck build reminds me of a small deck I built several years ago. I way over built it using screws, nails, bolts and construction adhesive. When I built it, I never intended for it to ever be disassembled and removed. However as time went on, we eventually sold the house and the new owner didn’t want the deck as they planned on adding on to the house and part of the closing deal was to remove the deck. Boy was it a tough job to tear it out. But the deck was rock solid and I am confident it would have lasted for many years before it would’ve begun to degrade.
Chainsaw will make quick work of tearing apart 😉
Looking good 👍
Thank you for watching
Thanks Andrew.
Thank you for watching
Great progress Andrew! You really build things to last. When it's your home, nothing but the best. This deck is going to be super nice.
Thank you for watching
That's awesome Andrew. I wish i would have seen this about 20 years ago!
Thank you for watching
Top notch (as usual) and great tips and tricks. Again some great engineering!!
Thank you for watching
Andrew, the profile picture for the video is epic. The deck is going to party central.😂
Looking forward to some good times out there.
Hi, Andrew! Your deck is going to be as safe and solid as Fort Knox. See you at 7:00.
See you then
Good day all.
While watching the video, I was actually planning to tell you about waterproofing top side up the decking joists to make it last forever! But you’ve thought of it already! Excellent work
It seems to be catching on, I knew from the get go I wanted to do it.
I’m all about the over building and preventative measures on the moisture down here in Florida! 👍🏻 great job & very informative video!!
Thank you for watching
Man, flashing that hanger board is chefs kiss for sure. Excellent call there
That is one stout built frame! As we are desert here in Idaho I have never seen anyone tape their framing like that - fantastic idea and so logical for your area👍👍 Can't wait for Part 3 or to see the finished product. Your many talents continue to amaze me - GREAT JOB💜💜💜
Thank you for watching
Were those mushrooms on your stone pile? Awesome job on your deck… forever deck. Love that you sealed all the tops of your joists!!
I those were cut pieces of wood that my mom wanted.
I know of at least 3 different types of hangers made to accommodate your angles. They do not have a bottom , but by seating your boards on the ledge then bend the angles for each side of the board and nail or screw them. They also make screws that are stronger than your nails and they make them that slide in a cartridge for your screw gun. I went on a tour of the Deltec homes and part of it was in the construction area and pointed out the strength of the new screw framing system which are hurricane rated.
Yes over the last few years they have started offering structural screws, most lack the composition for good shear strength. They are quite brittle. I couldn't find the bendable Joist hangers anywhere.
I just rebuilt my deck and went with composite as well. I also used a scrap piece (2x10) as a jig to set my joist hangers. That work’s really well for being able to just drop your joists in. However it does create a different problem that I didn’t think about. Because the lumber you get these days is not consistent, I had many joists that were set high because my jig board was an 1/8 to a 1/4 “ shorter than most of my joists. I had to go back and string line the joists and use a planer.
That does occasionally happen, I just take a small amount off the bottom with a jig saw.
Good job explaining things.
Glad you enjoyed it
Could you do a video soon even if it’s a quick short one over best trees to plant for privacy and the best way to plant them. I’m wanting to plant a row or two for privacy on my property but not real educated on it. Keep up the great videos man, I love your channel
Nice!
Going to be great when you get done with it! See you on the live tonight! Will be a great time as always!!
See you then
Bro, you could have used the same joist hangers by the pool, those fins on the back will bend. Awesome job and great video!!
I don't see how they can bend, it's a solid 3 sided bucket.i believe they make some with notches that can be bent, I couldn't find those anywhere to save my life.
@@TKCL mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/20a11f3e-87c9-4de4-9be3-886990423840/40356717.jpg, I apologize, I thought you were using these, the fins will bend a bit, you’d just need to play around to keep your joist center in the same place.
Now it all makes sense.
You can see it now.
Andrew, I enjoy all of your content. I’ve been in construction for many, many years. Just want to offer an option for future reference on the angled portion against the pool. Instead of ledgering , you can also do what I call pressure blocking . Meaning, attaching a block between two joist against the header board , allowing you to screw/nail through the side. Hope this made sense. Great job!
Like that idea along with ledgering, sounds like an over do situation to me. I love it!
That is a lot of work for having fun, But you do it once right and you do not have to do it again. You just enjoy the new deck for the rest of your life. That deck will outlast the pool. I am impressed with your in depth long term thinking on making this project that multi million dollar mansions probably do not have.
Thank you for watching
Awesome videos on the deck build! I did the same with the flashing tape on all the framing that water could stand as well. One thing I noticed that I wanted to give you a heads up on based on my bad experience. I'm not sure if your pool walls are painted steel, aluminum, or stainless, but I had rock up against my partially buried pool and the movement of the walls rubbing against the rock scratched the paint off and started to rust everything below the surface. This was within the first year. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that.
Thank you for the tip.
Going to be nice Andrew :)
Thanks
10:02- Provided all your all your 2X8 joists are all the same height, that'd work, but sometimes they're 8", or 8 1/4" or 7 3/4". Lookin' good.
I did not experience any smaller, I did experience a few thicker. Quick trim with a jig saw took care of that.
Overdo is what you do, but what you construct will last at least a century! I hope your back can manage all that work:)))
It got a little tight a few times.
On the top of all your joists, I would put an ice and water shield that protects against water sitting on the frame between the crakes .you can actually buy it in 2-inch wide rolls
Hey Andrew, love the deck design. Might want to think about adding support underneath the single joist that all the joists are attached to. You went 12” OC for the joists but connected 20-25 joists to a single 2x8? That is a large point load.
Another person mentioned that, I'll add another 6x6 underneath on a paver. Should be extremely robust.
Hey Kelly, the deck is looking good just wondered if your going to put support boards , I guess what I'm trying to say is cross peices between the boards for even more support. Thanks
Oh yes, he said blocking was pretty boring to watch, but he may show a little in the next episode.
@@PJ-uv9fr thanks I didn't here that part that makes good sense to do that
Yes blocking is happening to prevent twisting of the joists.
I don't know how you've been staying out there in the sun all day, It's been baking us here a few hours south of you.
I've almost got sick a few times. 112 yesterday and just got a warning for 116 today on the heat index. 🥵
Clark & Deborah:
Another Great teaching video Andrew, Do the hard work now and no regrets later....Well made...You will probably be able to park your tractor on it, as stronge as you reinforced it. lmao...
Thank you for watching
That deck is gonna last much longer than the pool!
I was thinking the same thing... 😂... Gonna replace that liner multiple times and that deck will be standing strong!!!
That's fine with me.
Could you explain how you connected the top board to the bottom board around the deck? Did you secure from the bottom or ? My husband and I have throughly enjoyed binge watching your videos!
I secured it through the sides of the vertical 2x8s.
I wonder if you could put joist tape on a long board, then cut it to size for blocking. I bet that would save a lot of time.
Possible, but that rubber butly is sticky. Not sure I want it in my saw blade.
@@TKCL Oh yea, that’s true. Looking good, can’t wait to see how it turns out! 👍
I have seen angled joist hangers, but only 45 degrees left and right. So if you have an octagon you are good to go
Mine are not those angles. 20-30 degrees.
I didn’t know that the deck joist tape was a thing. Nice job with going the next size up on the joists. So when I get ready to redo my deck your coming up to Indiana right?
Negative 🤣
Glad to see you throw that middle support in. I know the charts say it’s good but it just looked like too big of a span.
It was easy enough to do.
👍👍
🤘
Andrew, now it’s almost time for you,Tiffany also family and friends ❤😊😮⛱️
Hey Andrew. Look into the Floor Edge Beam calculations. You are running a compound load on that beam. Not sure of your clear span, 6’? Length of joist from patio to main deck, 8’? For a clear span of #1 Southern Pine of 10’ with 10’ joist span requires 2-2x12 with a specific nail pattern or bolted. I know you aren’t 10’x10’ but you do have to add joists going to pool since they are also attached to the Floor Edge Beam.
I would just notch a 6x6 and throw it under the beam and land it on a paver or something.
Looking good though!
You mean the ledger board that's in between the two different sections of deck? That's very easy to add a 6x6 on a paver as you mentioned. All other sections are about 5 ft 6 in, that particular one's a little over 7 ft.
Should also mention all other sections have two 2x8s as well. Very strong, but I see the potential failure point you mentioned, I'll add another 6x6.
Watch this video become a standard in deck building in the future. Overbuild and Beyond, but quite sound thinking! ❤
Viewers have brought up one potential failure point I'll address in the next video.
@@TKCL I bet it's puddling keeping in moisture on the joints because of the rubber tape and not a 5 degree angle 4 runoff?
No, the ledger board between the two decks should be reinforced more or doubled up.
are you going to use TEREX decking they have it at lowes. do not get to hot. it has been raining here. be bless and love and safe. SAVANNAH TN.
I went with a better quality product called Weathershield.
❤❤😊
I thought you have a directional Lazer beam that you could shoot a straight line from your beam to your not straight beams.
Just a thought.
Yeah but it requires me to work at night, not convenient when needing to get work done.
Did you put in the water fall in a video because I don't remember seeing you do it.
Posting that video today because so many people have asked about it.
I live close to where Black Beard the pirate lived
Nice!
Were those mushrooms growing in the rock pile at 12:08 ?
I thought so too! Those are the test cuts from the chain saw chain tests.
That's exactly right, my mother wants them for table decor.
Hey, Andrew is the zip tape and the other tape self healing
The rubber butly absolutely is, the zip not so much. I wanted to use up what I had. It's all Overkill anyway.
@@TKCL overdue is what I do
How did you get the laser level to show a line on all the posts at once
It's possible on at least one side. Make a mark and then transfer the line all the way around the posts with a square.
Hot tub ready😀
Naaa, I'd really beef it up for that.
First
Got it!
You could park your tractor on that deck
Teach Ruger how to dig.
I don't see a part 1. Oh well.
