    She's so correct; I dived a lot last year and my air consumption dropped! I literally just sit around or hover whilst the rest of the group is flailing. Most of my dives are recs with less experienced divers so I tend to just watch people. I also try to keep up cardio by swimming in the ocean in Sydney even though I'm not a fan of the cold water here. I only do it because I want to get stronger and improve my cardio, and get getter at swimming in currents! I can't believe she wore 3mm in 20degrees - in Australia now we wear 5mm in 24 - 25 degrees. But yeah diving is very calming for me so it helps with my breathing and air consumption.
    Thanks for the review; I had no idea she's in Australia. Will look her up!

    All very good points, one though that I would add would be to be properly weighted. If you dive too heavy it takes more air in your BCD to keep you afloat. But, sometimes it also literally does just come down to biology/ physiology; if you're a 6 ft 4 inch tall marathon runner, you're likely to have bigger lungs & use more air than a 5ft tall (small) person with tiny lungs. Simple!

    I initially consumed air at a horrific rate. Instructor had me buddy breathing on the first open water dive since I hit the number prior to anyone else. This was despite being in excellent shape- hour of intense cardio 5 days a week, lifting once a week, and very comfortable in the water (swimming in the ocean since I was kid, all the swim classes up through lifeguard certification, and being a Navy pilot going through the dunker tank training quite a few times).
    Told the divemaster on my first dive after certification (in Hawaii) to expect I'd be burning through the tank and that would drive my having to surface early. He asked me about my background and advised me to count to 8 slowly when inhaling, and to 10 slowly when exhaling. Huge difference in consumption and gotten better since then. I do have to think more about breathing while diving, I can't just 'breathe normally'.

    Awesome. Very good tips. She hit on the dive shallow and I will add that it also helps if you dive shallow “er” on deeper dives. I see a lot of people that feel like they have to be right on the bottom, by coming up 10 to 20 feet you’ll see more and use less gas.

    I’m a firefighter and I use alot of the techniques she talked about when I’m using my SCBA. Two things that I think are so true is not thinking about your breath and practice. The more dives you go on the more comfortable you will be. I use to drill and work out without being on air. Now that’s the only way I drill. Great video!

    Being relaxed and moving mindfully is very underrated. I notice that a lot, the more "action" and "hustle" there is under water at a divespot, the further gone is the wildlife you`re looking for.
    Also, i noticed that i get colder way easier, which shows me how much unnecessary moves i must have done which used air and keept me warm.
    I just noted how much difference your head and thinking makes. If i have to guide and need to watch out for others, especially in our conditions with currents, i use 25% more air.

    - Get weighted correctly
    - Make sure you have slept and eaten properly and are dressed to stay warm enough.
    - Get your equipment sorted so it matches you AND the circumstances of the particular dive. Be familiar with it so you don’t have to focus on meddling around with it all the time.
    - Get your buoyancy right, stop mucking about with the inflator all the time, calmly use your lungs for minor, necessary adjustments and don’t hold your breath.
    - Get streamlined and learned proper efficient finning.
    - Be physically calm, maintain the lowest pulse rate possible for the activity, don’t make ANY movements that are not strictly necessary to achieve specific ends. Necessary, goal-directed, non-hectic, non-impulsive movement only.
    - Establish and maintain a slow, calm breathing pattern that maximises the efficient oxygen uptake on every breath. Pay extra attention to a slow, controlled in-breath and a calm relaxed turnaround to the outbreath . Again - never hold your breath.
    - Understand water movement and use local geography and strategic placement in the water column to your advantage so as to minimize water resistance and general calorie expenditure.
    - Start the kind of breathing you want for the dive BEFORE you hit the water, and enter calmly without changing it. You tend to bring the rythm of your surface breathing with you for as long as the first 5-20 minutes if you don’t pay attention to it or cultivate relaxed breathing habits to where it’s automatic.
    - Get all this sorted and focus on a point of interest to let it all come together naturally.
    - If you spot a turtle or coveted nudibranch - don’t lose your shit and start flailing about. Just enjoy it calmly - you’ll be more focused that way and be able to enjoy it for longer.
    Practice suggestion: do your next dive as a meditation where you drop to the deepest point, establish neutral buoyancy and from then on only let air OUT as necessary with the inflator during a gradually ascending profile - you don’t inflate again unless necessity somehow demands it. On this dive move as little as possible - barely at all. Just feel the water and use it to your advantage. Keep your breathing slow and relaxed. The main goal is preserving it like this, just a hair above what it’s like when you fall asleep on the couch.

    Another thing to remember is for a new diver everything is new. Your brain is working really hard because every input it is used to is now different. This is why it's so tyring at the beginning. It's like new born babies they are processing so much information that is brand new all the time. This uses energy which for which you need oxygen so you use more air.

  • @tigrecito48
    @tigrecito48 5 месяцев назад +2

    talking of fitness, i wonder if people who live at high altitude like Quechua / Aymara people in the Andes, would be better at diving than sea level people or worse? Cos, one thing is they are not used to being at high air pressures ie under water its the complete opposite almost so it could be a negative thing BUT.. when high altitude people come to sea level they for a certain time period feel super energetic and powerful cos breathing seems super easy with more oxygen cos they are used to having more efficient lungs.. they can store more oxygen in their blood cells and have barrel shaped chests with big lung capacity etc... someone should do an experiment for thing... and therefore if it proved they could dive better not worse. could going to high altitude for a week or so before diving also improve a non genetically improved high altitude person's ability to dive? or spending time in one of those chambers but set at lower than sea level air pressure? i guess it might cause you more problems in terms of gas in the blood? i forget the terminology

    Hello Divers, I’m new at diving, just got open water certified in November. In few weeks we are going to Belize and plan to do some recreational diving there with the master of course. Also we were thinking about to do Great Blue hole dive. I know our certification only allowed us to dive 60 feet deep, however we’ve been down to 85 feet, our instructor accidentally took us to that depth:) Anyway, we signed up with diving company in Belize and when we asked them about the great blue hole dive they told us as long as we had open water dive certificate they would take us for one deep dive a day before to give us little bit more training and see how we handle the pressure and if all goes well, then the next day we could dive the blue hole. They told us they take us down to 130 feet, although when I did some research people say quite often they end up going little deeper like 140 or 145 feet, it just happened without you realizing it. My question to this dive community here is do you think it’s a doable or we are buying more than we can chew, should we wait till we get advanced diving certificate? Has anyone here done great blue hole in Belize with just open water certificate? Again, we will be with the dive master, we don’t plan to do this alone or any other dive as a matter of fact:). Thank you in advance:)

    Question:
    Does DAN pay for ALL the care related to a dive injury. Including follow up care such as doctor visits weeks later or even months later, physical therapy if the dive doctor orders it, home oxygen if the doctor orders it. Say a near drowning where there is lung damage or heart damage. Will DAN pay for all the follow up care related to that even if it lasts for years or is permanent damage. Say you need oxygen for the rest of your life secondary to permanent lung damage. Or a back injury related to diving where there is long term effects, would DAN cover that or is it more emergency care and after that is provided DAN is out of the picture. If your primary insurance found out it was a dive related injury and you have dive insurance they might refuse to pay for the care. Then if DAN says no to the coverage, what would you do. I bill insurance for a living and am curious. I see this with car accidents. Your car insurance is supposed to pay, when your reg. health insurance figures out you were hurt in a car accident, your health insurance wont pay.

      Just start slow. Tell the instructor about your problems/fears. Don't let anyone rush you. And try to start in a closed environment like a pool, if that seems less intimidating to you.

      I had an instructor work with me on mask clearing and some claustrophobia. His method was to gradually take me into the water by doing a shore dive. So we weren't very deep, and we could kneel on the bottom and work on the mask and claustrophobia. It wasn't 'open ocean,' but was still ocean. He got me over my fears in one shore dive.

    • @75jvs
      @75jvs 5 месяцев назад

      @@Perqd I think it would help. If you find a good and patient instructor (most of them are) and take the small steps. I had many friends have their first dive with me and an instructor. They all were anxious at first, mainly bc of the 'crazy´ fact that you can breathe while under water. But they all were excited after the first try and went for more dives. Remember, with many videos on the internet, you see worst case scenarios, but wayyy more often everything just goes smoothly. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many people diving and loving it. Plus, you don't have to do difficult dives. I don't dive often, and just want relaxed dives with good visibility to enjoy the sealife and feel the relaxed weightlessness under water. You don't have to achieve some kind of goal, only the goal of enjoyment!

    I’ve never used a DPV. What sort of impact does using one typically have on your SAC rate? Gus, has your weight loss had an impact on your SAC rate?

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 5 месяцев назад +2

      It depends. It can be quite relaxing and you'll reduce your SAC. But if you're going fast and following a complex path or dealing with decompression stops it can take some effort to dive a DPV. More stress will cause a higher heart rate and faster breathing.

  • @ccmzadv4879
    @ccmzadv4879 4 месяца назад

    Umm, yeah - experience is helping with relaxing - but the increased sensitivity to cold... is due to old. There is a plateau to where the experience gets you in terms of relaxing - after that it is age. Also, unlike some other physical attributes, your body does not "acclimate" to the cold in the same way over time.
    Definitely be more like a Barracuda, than Shark - Swimming like a shark will blow your energy, since you do not have the vertical mulsculature and components needed to swim side to side that way. If you are going to pick another animal to emulate, pick a Dolphin, since they have horizontal movement and stabilization that humans can emulate in kicks.
