Praise Zeus, CA just released a hotfix for Troy that allows us to disable the horrid Chromatic Aberration blurring effect that was introduced with the MYTHOS patch. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then you're lucky. It didn't bother you in the first place so don't worry about it lol.
HOLY CRAP I had about 400+ hours in the game as I got it last year and upon updating the game I INSTANTLY felt the graphics were off, after talking with some people, they also saw something weird with the graphics, but others didn't realize at all. I'm glad they made the hotfix because it was *so annoying*
Hit the nail on the head. There is so much they can do with this era it would be great to see. They need more factions. They already have a shit ton of options to throw into the factions. Make a sea people horde faction, Crete factions, thracians, maybe even some horde Scythians or nomadic horseman factions besides the amazons. Maybe even some random celts coming in to say what's up.
I love Greek Mythology and History, I have read and listened the Iliad and the Odyssey, but I don't see a dedicated TW game as a love letter to those, what I see is a cynical Warhammer DLC done with a "Troy" skin. Another "BIG MONSTER GOES RAWR!!!", gimmick resource mechanic and those purple ghosts really sting my eyes, it look like something for Warhammer TW. And if they haven't fixed infantry combat, which should be the most fighting in a Troy TW game, then what else is there to say. But this is a great review, I like you being really candid, and I'd only like if these reviews were longer.
Thanks for the comment. I think they game might've felt more "legit" if it was a full sized game designed for mythology from the get-go. That said, Warhammer with a mythology skin is good enough for me for a DLC. I'm easy to please there because of how much of a mythology content drought we're currently in in the strategy sphere, and because of how much I enjoy Total War gameplay. I'd still love a proper mythology TW. Glad you enjoyed the review man!
If they make Troy cheap within 2-3 months, mark my words. They'll release the Egyptian DLC but they'll make Troy cheaper. Could be totally wrong either way (and roast me on that lol if I do get it wrong lol)
It's a lot of fun!!!! Heaps of maps and it's great having Greek mythological creatures. If any modders read this please make a 'jason and the Argonaut s DLC or mod with the skeleton warriors, Talos and posiden. Will pay top dollar for that adventure!!!!!
They’re straight up giving up on history aren’t they? Historical mode hasn’t been given anything like the attention Myth mode has. Warhammer is the money maker so that’s where they’re staying I guess It’s sad. I love historical Total War games and I’m not really a fan of the fantasy titles
I loved the historical titles, but warhammer 2 is probably the best total war game ever. The sheer amount of options on the battlefield and in terms of campaign styles is amazing. I can't be bothered to play the other titles they feel so inferior to me now. I can see why they are going in this direction. Like a new Rome for example the best they can do is make a more interesting campaign map, but its going to be the same old same for battles; phalanx, romans soldiers using pila, etc. Not to say its bad its just that very little can be done to refine it without changing the historical context and add something new or fresh to sell the game.
Bear in mind that the historical titles themselves after Rome 2 didn’t do great. No matter how much marketing Attila failed, 3k was abandoned in favour of a new 3k (whatever that means) and TOB didn’t deserve to flop so bad as it did.
Fantasy is making the mainstream money for now and historical isn’t. Yet for Paradox historical is making them boatloads. Weird irony here. Historical isn’t dead, it’s just we’ve had a mix of historical fantasy which doesn’t satisfy audiences maybe the fantasy ones. Until the new historical total war comes, we won’t know. The only other thing I would say and let me be controversial here: no. I don’t think historical is declining. I don’t agree that its bad with the new titles. The next historical game will prob have a lot of old and senior devs that worked on previous total war games to come back because CA want the old fans to a degree. But don’t expect the next historical total war to be on the features of Rome 1 or med 2. Will features be added from the old games? Yes. But it won’t feel like the same unless CA make some changes. While Rome 1/Med 2 had its day, the new devs at CA have their own image of what total war is supposed to be. I suppose, as fans, we all have our idea of what a historical total war should be. Maybe it’s time we stopped for a second and see something positive.
This is the second one I've ever done, so I couldn't tell you. The fact that people are leaving comments without being able to watch makes me feel like it might be better to NOT do the premiere, because who knows if the commenters will come back and actually watch? Time will tell.
@@happycompy at least I do, I set a reminder and I come back once is up, but probably is cause I'm a fan of your channel and I love your videos, maybe the more casual fans don't come back? Idk
The sea people would indeed be cool. Sorta like a mongol invasion typa thing but in the sea part of the map. and they could make it so that when the sea peoples event triggers most costal settlements get sorta nuked development wise cuz the sea people only exist cuz they got sick of their achean and trojan overlords and the fighting and want to rule themselves.
CA is double dipping (getting massive bucks from deal with Epic, and now forcing us to buy Steam version due to better moddding), and we are falling for it. Well, I'm not falling for it yet. I've got my free copy on Epic, and I'm waiting to see if there will be good mods on Steam. If there are cool overhauls on steam down the road, I'll buy it on steam sale. To be less greedy, CA should have made mythos mode free, and only charged for the monster hunts as dlc.
Having Troy finally come to steam however I don’t want to waste money on the game yet when I could be playing an older more developed title like Rome II or Three Kingdoms or even Warhammer II. The game has a long way to go still before I would invest into it however I do not want them to abandon the game like they did with Thrones which made me sad that they never developed that game further.
Dorian invasion is A MUST for Troy. Heck, even in the lore Odysseus returns home after Troy campaign not to recognise his Ithaka at first. Also they already have a HUGE white spot on the map where Hittites Empire was historically. Having it as some kind of "Neutral superpower" for which factions will compete to win over or a kind of Sword of Damocles that may swoop in if situation is right would be nice.
i'm liking the dlc so far but maybe i am a little biased because of mythology setting. And I must thank you for telling us what's wrong with the graphic because i couldn't figure it out myself.
With Memnon being potentially leaked I would love to have the Hittites and no Aegean factions be added into the mix as an end game issue. Hittites and the Sea People would be an amazing expansion.
Only thing interesting for me from Troy is the new economy system, which isn't worth the price tag. If I want to play with monsters I can just boot up WH2.
Finally bought troy on sale with all dlc a while back and 70 hrs of playtime later wow i love it. i genuinely think this is one of my favorites in the series, i love the resources system, the maps are beautiful, music is actually great and fairly memorable unlike most modern total war games imho, the dlc is top notch and there are some really great (albeit very few) mods to iron out some of its issues.
Thank you for sharing man, I'm glad I wasn't alone in enjoying Troy for what it was. I wish it wasn't just a Saga though :( I'd have loved an expanded scope.
It's really good the devs listened to us but I am scared they are going to pull a three kingdoms on it and leave it in the dust, if they gave patches at the current pace for a year (or a bit faster) Troy would likely be favourite total war game
Yep, it's a hot take, but if they added in everything I mentioned here (which isn't asking a lot), it could easily be my favorite, too, especially with how moddable it is.
One thing on the price that I’ve not seen anybody mention, is that the game was given away for free when it came out. Sure, I could pay £50 for the game and DLC on steam, where I would rather have it, but I could also just pay £20 for the DLC for the game I received for free on the epic store.
As someone who got the base game and the amazons dlc for free, it's isn't that big of a deal to pay for this, and is arguably a steal. However, I think it should have been made free for steam purchasers.
5:13 that's what the guard mode function is for. This isn't a new mechanic, it's been the same in every total war. If you don't want your units to chase, guard mode.
I'm well aware of Guard Mode lol. The issue is that the non-guard mode behavior of units is different in Troy vs other contemporary Total Wars. They chase to the ends of the earth, even if they're literally running THROUGH another unit. This doesn't happen in Rome 2 or WH2.
@@happycompy I figured there was more to it. Always strange what they decide to change from one game to another. Things that work perfectly and should just be left alone are suddenly broken or backwards somehow. Anyway, cheers and thanks for the review. Just sat through 11 days of no power in New Orleans and finally can get the game. Your review helped in that decision.
If they added meaty campaign mechanics with the historical mode, Troy will be a better game even with copy-pasted deep campaign mechanics from historical total wars. For me, a game with copy-pasted deep mechanics is better than a simplified game that is too lazy to copy-paste important mechanics. Anyway, Troy is fun but it can be improved if it copy-pasted stuff. Also, I think no one will complain if they copy-pasted stuff, no one will say CA is lazy for copy-pasting things they did that made games like 3k, Rome 2, and attila a great game due to this mechanic that make the game deep and meaningful.
Price is indeed much, but I'm pretty hype for this addition of mythical units and mythic mode-though I never minded the Truth Behind the Myth concept. I'm hoping they'll further improve upon this, especially with the suggestions you dished out. What does bug me most is people have been nagging for there to be actual mythical beasts rather than the 'Truth Behind the Myth' concept since the start... And then once we get mythical beasts, these same people are now bitching about Troy being a Warhammer clone?? Like, is there no winning with these pricks? Then, of course, the Warhammer fanboys think this will be a detriment to the development of WH3.
I was going to buy it, I wanted to buy it... but the price they are asking for a one-year-old game is too high. The truth is, this DLC SHOULD have been there from the very beginning, and now asking Steam users to pay for the base game and DLC is a tough pill to swallow. For one part, I want to support it because well... I have played TW: Rome II since forever and just bought Warhammer II to play with my brother and I realise that if every TW fan was like me they would be out of business. I love the ancient past, the bronze age history and Greek mythology so I want to "reward" them for putting out a game of my interest but something feels missing. What you say about the combat puts me off ... I already feel mixed about Warhammer II's lack of formations and this feels like it would be the same on steroids. They should of put it out at a discount for 20-25 quid DLC included and I don't think I would of think about it twice. I can't be the only one that has decided not to pull the trigger because "being wrong at 40 quid" would kind of suck.
Great video! I agree that this dlc is a bit over priced. $40 for everything seems about right. Paying $75 like they are suggesting is a kick in the pants.
I think they need to fire whoever came with idea to make city buildings "an obstacle" where soldiers cannot enter... and then implement crazy agorythms to fix the AI navigation issues... First, its terrible, and it looks ridiculous.. having a walled city with entire block of unpassable terrain composed of buildings....
I actually like Historical Mode... sure, it doesn't have the depth of something like Rome 2 that was quite frankly a bit of a headache (and terrible lighting, but I better not stray). It's a campaign that's on a par with Warhammer campaigns but with historical units in battle - it might help bridge a gap for fantasy gamers to check out the historical titles instead of just Warhammer.
Interesting, I never looked at it that way. I'm almost always of the mind that more campaign complexity = better, but that's because I've played thousands of hours of this series which is NOT the norm.
I remember 30 dollars was like a stand alone expansion instead of a 10 dollar size dlc. CA are no better than Bethesda now in terms of quality and fan support.
@@happycompy understood. I think it’d make sense if natural catastrophes had pushed a particular people to become nomadic reavers. We see that occurring fairly often in History. Then again, I’m not sure natural catastrophes explains why Genghis Khan or Tamerlane went on an absolute rampage and collapsed many civilisations around them… so Sea People could still be their era’s Mongol hordes?

Soooooooo I have got the free epic games edition and now I am asking myself if I should buy the steam version... I am super curious to see the mods that the community will do for this game and I want to support this game that I loved. Should I buy again, or this will be a stupid thing to do?
I'd recommend to keep playing on epic and wait till the next big sale. By then, more mods will have arrived, too. I would've rebought the game on Steam but in a content creator who specializes in mods so I'm not representative of your average player.
I wouldn't buy the game/dlc unless on sale, I was lucky enough to get it free. That said, mythos really helps the playability, I wouldn't be playing it otherwise
Definitely the Heroic Edition, it's only marginally more expensive but you get 4 more factions. The game lacks factions as it is, so every additional one helps.
The problem with adding the seapeoples in is, that you already have as most of sea peoples in tw:troy, cuz the seapeoples were mostly made up from the Achaeans , who thought after plundering troy, it "would be fun" to plunder the rest of the eastern mediterranean. sorry:/
That's just one theory. Another is that they were Sardinians and people from Central Europe fleeing famine and cooling climate (Volcanic eruptions were present during the Collapse too, which supports that theory)
@@happycompy sadly ancient pre-antiquity history is often inconclusive and incomplete, so we may never know. btw. congtrats to 10k subscribers, you earned it

I never argue about price, I think its unfair to put that burden on developers. Quality I think is top notch, and it all fits together nicely. I somehow wish I could get all 3 game modes in one though, "historical mode neutral faction" in greece somewhere, "truth behind the myth" factions and "mythic" factions. But altogether I am happy with what they have done here, wish it was on steam sooner but I am happy and grateful for this game.
"I never argue about price, I think its unfair to put that burden on developers" Lol what? What about the burden on consumers? In what world do you live in?
I may be in the minority, but I am okay paying for DLC if it drives continued development from CA. I loved Attila and wish that got more developer love. So far I enjoy Troy (I majored in Ancient Greek, the language and translated the Iliad in Ancient Greek in class) and hope they will continue to invest in it now that it's been released on Steam. The biggest insult would be if this Mythos update is the end of their content plans and they stop updates afterwards. I'm focusing on the historical and truth behind the myth modes for now. Historically this game may be inaccurate just by having big lines of infantry charging into one another. From my studies, scholars argue that this time period likely saw smaller forces, and battles were often skirmishes and single combat. Yes that's why in the Iliad may of the fights are between two soldiers while the rest watch on. I think CA could actually implement this by using terrain even more, and this is already the best terrain battlefield of any TW that I've played (skipped all Warhammer).
For me troy has awful gameplay and i put a lot of hours into it so i won't be purchasing this dlc . Even if i did enjoy it though it is still overpriced for a dlc and it creates a bad precedent for future dlcs

Great video! I agree that this dlc is a bit over priced. $40 for everything seems about right. Paying $75 like they are suggesting is a kick in the pants.
thank you for this review, just started A Mythic Campaign, and it is much better than the Truth behind the Myth.
Agreed!! Enjoy!
But where's the dwarfs that mine gold and the oxcart and the kracken?
Diabetes and mommy- comedy gold thanks for the laugh 😂
Totally agree on the pricing structure and the overall issues. Good stuff!
Yeah it is imo
Annoying they’re charging an extra £30 for what the game should of always been
Yup 👍. Mythos should've been free, and the DLC should've been the big three Bois and their unique units.
Man…. I might buy this game eventually…. Looks pretty decent.
I remember 30 dollars was like a stand alone expansion instead of a 10 dollar size dlc.
CA are no better than Bethesda now in terms of quality and fan support.
It's the same nearly everywhere, blood and wine best dlc ever basically a full game at dlc price.
Paradox interactive new DLC for CK3 is 30 bux😕
For me personally truth behind the myth is more enjoyable
something about a thick boston accent talking about total war is so funny
Sea people aren’t responsible for the Bronze Age collapse? I thought that was still TBD and likely to always be TBD.
My understanding is that they were a symptom or a factor, but not THE cause. Either way, you're right, they're shrouded in mystery.

@@noxplague thanks, I really enjoyed the lecture.
Edit: those guys were truly unlucky. Climate change affecting an entire region + repeated earthquakes all over.
CA made a statement about the Chromatic Abberation, they are going to remove it in a patch.
Woah, got a link?? That's awesome news! Thank you for sharing.
Nvm found it on Reddit.
yes age of mythology , also remember me ?
Haha are you from Boston? Lovely vid, lovely accent.
Not from Boston, but I grew up on the MA east coast. Thank you! The accent comes and goes, I miss MA :(
Soooooooo I have got the free epic games edition and now I am asking myself if I should buy the steam version...
Worth It
I don’t want Warhammer with a different coat of paint. I want a new historical total war game
I wouldn't buy the game/dlc unless on sale, I was lucky enough to get it free. That said, mythos really helps the playability, I wouldn't be playing it otherwise
The way he pronounced ‘cyclops’ killed me
Lmao that's the CORRECT PLURAL PRONUNCIATION! Look it up my guy!
Better than original Troy but surely not worth the money.
This review was wicked smaht
Damn missed the livestream
Can I ask? Which one should I get? Troy Heroic Edition or Mythic Edition? Which one is worth it?
Definitely the Heroic Edition, it's only marginally more expensive but you get 4 more factions. The game lacks factions as it is, so every additional one helps.
@@happycompy thanks 😊
The problem with adding the seapeoples in is, that you already have as most of sea peoples in tw:troy, cuz the seapeoples were mostly made up from the Achaeans , who thought after plundering troy, it "would be fun" to plunder the rest of the eastern mediterranean. sorry:/
That's just one theory. Another is that they were Sardinians and people from Central Europe fleeing famine and cooling climate (Volcanic eruptions were present during the Collapse too, which supports that theory)
@@happycompy sadly ancient pre-antiquity history is often inconclusive and incomplete, so we may never know.
btw. congtrats to 10k subscribers, you earned it
@@p.spruenken8514 thank you! Much appreciated!
i bought troy sage long time ago on Epic Store, can i switch my game to steam or i'll have to buy it again ?
Nope, unfortunately not.
I buyed yesterday troy limited edition, and i watched after unit specialisatiom, like shield wall, spear fight positions, cavalry assault, and you are right,is horible to missing. I play with Penthelsea and Hera as god. I will think abbaut mythoss.
I think if this was anything but total war It’d be a classic
I never thought of it that way, I think you're right.
10:07 did they make a GTX 2060?
Yep. It's a laptop GPU.
gibs me bronze age total war
=D and troy Mods?
TW Warhammer: Troy
They probably should've just stuck to Mythos when developing the game.
Agreed, although I see nothing wrong with having a historical mode too. It's the middle mode that I take issue with.
I like your accent. Is it Boston?
East Coast New England. Similar to Boston, yeah.
Basically this should have been the base game
What is the next video?
I never argue about price, I think its unfair to put that burden on developers. Quality I think is top notch, and it all fits together nicely. I somehow wish I could get all 3 game modes in one though, "historical mode neutral faction" in greece somewhere, "truth behind the myth" factions and "mythic" factions. But altogether I am happy with what they have done here, wish it was on steam sooner but I am happy and grateful for this game.
"I never argue about price, I think its unfair to put that burden on developers"
Lol what? What about the burden on consumers? In what world do you live in?
Yeah I definitely disagree on price. I'm grateful for the game/DLC too but not $75 grateful lol."
@@Rokiriko Same world you do, where video games aren't much more expensive than lunch.
In this game siege tower still exist?
Yeah
@@happycompy my friend told me if siege tower removed or didnt exist in siege war 🤔
Cyclopees???
That rome 2 comment hurts, All of my campaigns in Rome 2 are soo easy because of the stoopid ai
Yup. Don't even get me started on unwalled coastal settlement battles in that game.
@@happycompy Jesus Christ I had to auto or restart so many battles because of the shitty navy mechanics.I play with the battle timer turned off and its like the AI knows that it can just hide a ship in a corner to win. Or my troops that never want to land! But the worst is the AI never landing
This is a "saga" game; i think it's okay if it's not as in depth as Three Kingdoms for example; AND i think this game shouldn't be as expensive as it is..
Good
Is Anyone gonna care about Troy in 3 months they should just abandon it like thrones of britannia, Attila, 3 kingdoms Yeah Im biter about britannia my favourite time period they did that game so dirty
I did try the hostorical mode but my PC blue screened after 10 minits
the bubble shields disgust me
There's a mod that replaces them lol
@@happycompy thank christ
I thought the Sea People were the Mycenaeans
I refounded this game only played for 45 minutes.

25$$$$$ for DLC! For a 40 dollar game no less, welp guess im never playing troy mythos.
Rome 2 is still better
I can't understand the whining and mixed reviews on steam... I paid 63$ for everything... if your broke go play Dota 2 or something.
I paid $0 but I still think it's overpriced. $75 for a game (especially one with only 12 playable factions) is pretty insane.
@@happycompy I thought after tax and discount on steam it’s 63$ with base game and all dlc?
@@YOGITHABEARv2 Yes, but the operative phrase there is "after discount."
World War I would be too small.
now you got me thinking of a saga game for ww1 lol but honestly its not, there was fighting in eastern europe, western europe, africa, the middle east and even asia from what i have read
