I'm going with overrated. Every single graduate of a conservatory plays 3 times better than Wood, in terms of solo guitar. Really guys and girls: he stinks. I saw a local band yesterday with a better solo guitarist.
He doesn't have Taylor's virtuosity on the guitar alone, but he's a damn fine player. Ronnie's so much more than a guitar player with his versatility with pedal steel, bass and mandolin playing. A tremendous talent. He was good for the Stones but his best playing was during his tenure with The Faces. His early work with The Birds was super cool too.
Wood, taylor, and richards have all given me different blocks to become a better guitarist. They each excel in areas the others dont. If any one of them didnt exist I'm sure my love of rock would not be the same. Even if ronnie didnt innovate as much after he left the faces, his piece of the pie is just as good as the others. Jones gave me the love for multi instrumental-ism and adding tons of different sounds to music in my head. Every one of them is great.
Yep, sure! I am 'a little' older than you, but I've always imagined the Stones as coming to me in "Seasons", like, there's Brian's season, there's Mick Taylor's season and Ronnie's season(witch will last, still). Example I always give are... "Can you imagine Brian playing Miss You?", or "Have you ever heard how miserable Ronnie sounds playing the solo of Sway?", or even "Can you imagine Mick Taylor interacting with the audience like Ronnie does?". I see no competition. I just see how they were three guys, each of whom, gave something different to the band, sometime the last guy, which is Ronnie, cannot replicate very well what the previous guy did. That is to be expected. Ronnie is not a virtuoso, but he fits the bill just right, he is more than enough for the kind of song the stones were putting out from 1975 on, and the audience loves him, he captivates. And yes, they are all great musicians, there are things to be learned from all of them.
Richards is the key I feel...to your appreciation and personal quest...what I mean is his timings offer the rhythmic startups for the rest to flow between
In '76 he had very slightly changed the solo from the '75 type. They gave him ample time to build his solo, and there are always 4 distinct sections. It's "section" 2 that is different in Europe. Of his 3 unique Zemaitis guitars, this was the one for this type solo with it's natural sustain. Like Jonah Fuerstenberg says, his best playing was with the Faces, and early solo albums. He's a great guitarist, and always wanted to be a Stone, a most obvious choice; but it is very ironic that somehow in the Stones he lost a good bit of fire. It took some years, but he had to go from 1st main guitar and co-leader, to rank lieutenant. Less and less crunch. On 'Some Girls' and the 78 and 81 tour he was great, but his playing had already changed. In late 90's, on all those excellent tours, they had Ron turned way down. We can hear it here where Keith steps all over Ronnie in '98. Finally came back around '03. The 03 example here shows some good weaving by both guys, and Ronnie looks like he's trying to get some dynamics going, but by now Big Arena rock left no room at all for subtleties. Jagger and Charlie most likely did not even hear Ron. Best late era one is '07 with him even doing a little tapping. I;m not a fan of super SB recordings. in '72 Keith was comping and riffing behind Taylor. Now he overplays, and is too far up in mix. Even worse is Leavell. Okay - edit, the last solo is a gem. Finally back on a Les Paul, and good mix, and they give him a bit of room to stretch.
Versatility and personality also count in an artist. Woods has worked with many other performers across different musical genres. He doesn't try to "trash talk" or upstage others. He's dealt with Mick jagger for almost fifty years so he should get kudos for that😂😂

Gibson's are bloody heavy and less dynamic unless your using p90s, I've recently switched from set necks to telecaster and I'm thinking why the hell didn't I do this years ago. Worse thing Ronnie did was to become a sidemen,I mean it's easier, it pays more but it stifled his musicianship and he got into heavy drugs with the stone's. Which is probably why Rory Gallagher got off after working with them for a week before Ronnie joined.
I'm a Fender guy, but I loved Mick Taylor playing his Gibson sunburst Les Paul. Taylor would have shredded this solo. Ronnie is good but Taylor was a virtuoso. Ronnie should have added some double stops or something to thicken the sound. Keith can play good solos, too. Honky Tonk Women, Gimme Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil just to name a few.
Ronnie is not a pretty guitarist. But he is really creative. Listen to his work with the Faces and then the Stones on their 75, 76 and 78 tours. It's impressive stuff. I will always wonder what Taylor would have done on Some Girls, but on When the Whip Comes Down, Beast of Burden, Respectable and Shattered - hell, all of the album - Ronnie was perfect.
his solos were way better than Taylors. The Taylor hype is way overrated. Wood can play pedal steel, slide ,acoustic, rhythm and lead. Never fell for the Taylor hype.
