I wanted to point out that your "whatever works" approach is so refreshing! There are so many guys on RUclips without a fraction of your competence trying to tell the viewers it has to be analog, is has to be tube... Fuck it! You make great music and I really enjoyed how you just told us that using EZ Keys etc. ist perfectly fine.
Totally! The ends justify the means! I don't care how stuff gets made, as long it sounds good :-D I've read books and books about production and engineering, and come away with the idea that all the great producers just messed with stuff until they liked it. All my engineer friends support this "whatever works" approach. It's art, after all, and there's no "right" way to do it :-D
Thank you, Eric! I've been trying to figure out how to make my demos sound and work better and, once again, you've unlocked a treasure chest of knowledge! Damn, you are a good teacher!
Great tutorial!! Thank you. I must have another look at Garage Band. 4 years later, I’m ready to make backing tracks to help me with my guitar learning and I rediscover this tutorial. Wow! This still the best backing track using GarageBand & best backing track tutorial that I’ve on RUclips. BTW I bought your course on TrueFire. Love your chill attitude and the reprogramming. I guess this why I’ve decided to learn to create my own backing tracks so that I can explore creatively.
I recommend this guy's book: thegaragebandguide.com/ultimate-mixing-guide It's very helpful! Garageband is easy to use, but a lot of the features/buttons are kinda hidden!
Wow, awesome. I've just been ignoring Garageband and sticking with studio one and/or protools, but there are a lot of cool little features in garageband I never even knew about. Seems like a lot of fun. Im definitly gonna play around with it now!
Thanks Frank! I'd say if you're comfortable with Studio One and Pro Tools, stick with those because they're higher fidelity. Professional engineers scoff at garageband - seems to be Pro Tools is forever the gold standard. I use Garageband mainly because I've always used it, and don't have to have to worry about pleasing clients other than myself. I know it pretty well, and love all the convenience of the presets.
Yes, fun and very helpful. I never would have thought to start with the keyboards, but it makes so much sense. You have excellent presentation skills. Thanks for sharing.

great run through - your backing tracks sound glorious. You have a gift of making seemingly complicated things accessible (and fun). I think I'll bookmark this puppy for future viewing if I decide to follow through with exploring the program.
Thanks so much, Robert! It takes some time to get comfortable with Garageband, I'd expect to spend a good couple of weekend afternoons messing with it before it starts to work for you :-D

Yeah! It takes many hours of goofing with it till it starts to make sense. I'll probably do another one where I build a track from scratch, to really show how to make the omelette.
Eric your the man!!! Thanks for showing how to make the backing music . Your explanation on everything has been so help full. I use GarageBand on my phone with AmpliTube and now I see what and how to get it better then which I have been can't wait to try it out
It's actually fairly straight forward once you dip your toe in, and, right out of the box, can be a lot of fun. My advice with any new creative program is: don't try to make a master-piece first off. Instead, spend hours having fun exploring. Make a mess. A GLORIOUS mess. Then make another. Next thing you know, you're dipping into your new skills to create what you actually want AND to go beyond what you could previously imagine. Well... Thant's the idea!
Very helpful video Eric. Thanks for the post. Maybe some time down the road when you get the time you could do a video on the proper way to connect a Pod 2.0 or a Vox Tonelab to a Mac to use with Garage Band . It would be helpful for us first timers.
Nice Eric, When I watch this I want to reach out and solo the tracks. lol. I got a brand new Apollo quad coming today. Can't wait to use it. Keep on crushing it brother.
Great stuff this Garage band can do now ...I must relook at mine.Being an old engineer I thought all the advice was good with the exception of maybe a reverb on the whole mix.But there are no rules so if it works its okay.I would try mix compression first as that will sometimes exagerate the reverbs on your source material.Just a thought.
Yeah, sometimes the "Reverb on everything" is too much. I sometimes do that because Garageband doesn't allow send/return processing. That makes total sense to compress first, then add a touch of "room" if necessary. Good point!
Eric, great tutorial! I really like your playing and the easy keys idea. I can't find it in my plugins. Searched on the web and it seems easy keys is for sale but not part of my standard garage band install. Thanks.
Ugh it’s a major headache with GB! I have an epic email thread with customer support - they got it to work, but it wasn’t simple. These days, I just make and save my own presets GB, it’s quicker in the long run
Someone in my Recording Revolution group shared this article with me and it instantly fixed the issue! All good!! www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/how-to-get-amplitube-4-presets-to-appear-in-garageband/
Thanks! In this clip, I used a '66 Fender Mustang - with a Strymon Deco, Analog Delay, and Strymon Flnt, into a Silvertone 1484. It was recorded with an Se Electronics X1r Ribbon Mic, Cloudlifter, Art Tube MP Preamp, into a Tascam DR40 field recorder. I dump the .wav file from the Tascam into Garageband an line it back up manually. For my computer, I just use a Focusrite Scarlett interface. I hope that helps!
I saw your video on your Squier Strat Family member, she’s a beauty. I did see in the background, your using a Scarlett 2i2. I need an interface and I want to use an amp software program for practicing with your Truefire course and late night practice. How is the latency with this interface? My old PCI audio card was super fast and had zero delay when playing guitar. Focusrite has a Clarett series that is suppose to be the same as pci with respect to latency. It’s a lot of money so just wondering your thoughts on this. Can I eat Pizza on Tuesday 🤔🤣
Aha yes that was tricky! I bought Screenflick, and then had to download a plugin called sound flower. Then it took a couple of tries to get my preferences set right
Hey Eric, I have recently stumbled across your channel, while dragnetting the web in regards to Ribot, our hero, and have been completely delighted. Been meaning to thank you for taking the time to make such wonderful, calmly paced and aesthetically pleasant videos. I've already learned much from you. I am a brand-newbie to garageband and it seems since you made this tutorial Apple "upgraded" and ez-keys that looks so pretty is unavailable? have you experienced this, and if so know of any tricks? i've been searching to no avail. I'd appreciate any info, but if you were smart enough not to upgrade or don't wanna play the IT game, i dig it. thanks for making your channel!
I can personally vouch for Studio One. I started off with the free version I got with my Presonus Audiobox, which was pretty good, but Presonus sent me emails now and again offering me the upgrade to the full version plus a load of add ons for around £120, which was about a third off the regular price, plus the add ons would've cost a substantial amount on top......And well, while the free version was good and had plenty of stuff on it, the full version is absolutely huge. There's tons of stuff on it and considering the price I paid, I think it's fantastic. My recommendation would be to buy something that includes the free version, have a play with it for a couple of months to familiarise yourself with the program, then wait for Presonus to email you with offers of the discounted full version, because they will eventually. It's the best way I found because if you just decide to buy the full version from the start it'll cost around £300 or maybe more I can't remember exactly but the Presonus website will have all of the prices on it. 👍
Paul is the man! So many parts that we assume are George and Ringo are actually Paul - seems like he was the hardest worker of the bunch, willing to stay in the studio all night to get the parts perfect.
Thanks, Eric! Interesting and very well done. What's your view of how Logic (e.g., Logic Pro X) differs from Garage Band? Any tips about Logic you can share?
My producer buddy FJ Ventre at Good Luck Studios uses Logic and it looks great! Seems like Garagband with a major upgrade. All the buttons are in the same places, but there waaaay more options for track routing, editing, etc. My computer is quite old, so I'm holding off on upgrading to logic until I upgrade my mac :-D
Hey Eric! Great video! I was using GB on my iPad and got to use it on Mac just recently so I'm trying to figure out what is where in the software. I'm having the troubles with all the plug-ins. It doesn't show the nice animations as yours, so far I've been playing just with the piano parts and I just cannot get that nice looking piano platform. Do I have to download/buy the plugins somewhere? Can you hit me up with some tips where to find all these plug-ins? When I open the piano plug-ins it just shows the EXS24 but when I click on it it doesn't open... any advice? Thanks a lot!
Ah yes, I've spent some extra money on those pretty plugins. I got EZ keys through Sweetwater.com, as well as Amplitube. The Vahalla Reverb I got through them directly. Of those, EZ keys is the most valuable - well worth the $149. The others are great, put Garageband has pretty good amp simulators and Reverbs already :-D
Thanks Jayanth! Yeah, I think I'll do another one of these where I build a play along from scratch, and use the built in sound library, so people can see how it would work on their version. I've spend a couple of hundred dollars on additional plugins, so I have an unfair sound advantage :-D
I’m a GarageBand guy too, it’s really amazing how much it can do. I normally play my keyboard parts then go back into the piano roll & clean them up because I’m the most ham-fisted keys player on Earth. I like the EZ Keys approach, thanks for that tip.👍 For drums I’ve been using the built-in drummers but I’ve never been happy with the drum sounds so I’m going to check out EZ Drummer as well. Viva la Toontrack! The platinum analog tape preset is gold! I use it on literally every songs master track. I’ve been looking for a good analog tape machine plugin to run on the master to add some warmth, any experience with those? Trying to find a good mic pre but Sweet Jebus they’re expensive for a nice one. Not to mention almost everything is 500 format, so I’d have to buy a lunchbox as well. What a rabbit hole... Anyway, great tips Eric, thankee muchly.
I am on the same search as well! For now I just use the Garageband "analog tape" preset. I may invest in waves', but seems like an unfun way to spend $200 :-P
Trying to watch every one of your vids, I was just recently wondering if you might have your backing tracks on your website...but this made me think I can probably easily create some of my own. Tip: check out the toontrack EZX twisted kit, sampled by Michael Blair, I think you'd love that! Have a nice day Eric! regards, Gert
Oh yeah I know that bundle! btw - all my backing tracks are available for free on the website. Just go to the page for whatever lesson you wanna jam with :-)
Hey man! I got all the extra plugins on sale through sweetwater.com - but I'd mess around with Garageband's amps for a while first - there's a lot great preset sounds in there!
You should get it man! I have some other bundles for amplitube, but the Hendrix one is the only one I actually use. It has all the amps and pedals you need, plus presets organized by album and song!
I like the built in drummer pretty good! I only switched to Toontrack's drummer because I find it easier to work with midi samples instead of Garageband's "groove matrix."
Good question! There's this guy: thegaragebandguide.com/ultimate-mixing-guide Also, I think there's a dude on youtube with a "Garageband and Beyond" channel that's quite useful.
oh wow... so many options..., it really depends on how literate you are on programming drums... if you are new to using Toontrack products then EZDrummer 2 bundles are a great place to start (I have it). The samples are awesome and the editing interface is also great. Superior Drummer 3 ( I still need to upgrade to this) is an amazing product, but a bit more complex. You can get very granular in what you are doing with SD3.
It me! These days, I use EZ drummer for the beats and fills, and play everything else myself. I find it sounds more natural that way - the less loops I use the better!
Thanks Eric. You're down to earth sharing is so refreshing. I loved this track and purchased the Tabs a while back, so this was spot on. Question about Garageband...I am now seriously interested in using it as the UI seems more welcoming than Ableton. Do you know how well the Garageband and PC emulators work on a Windows (10) system?
Hrmmm that I don't know, unfortunately. I just did a google sear for, "most user friendly DAW PC" and Ableton was at the top of the list. Maybe just keep on fiddlin' with it and it'll start to make sense :-P
GarageBand get so much unnecessary hate, I used it for such a long time and made in my opinion amazing music with it! I now use Logic but still GarageBand can take you all the way if you know how to use it.
Hi Eric, sorry to bother you with this one. I have Garageband 10 and Amplitude 4 (with Hendrix sounds). When I choose Amplitube as a plug-in I get the notification that Garageband can't open the preset database. Do you know how to solve this problem. Again, my apologies but you don't seems to have this problem (anymore). Thanks for reply!
Arrrgh I have the same problem! I've emailed back and fourth with the helpful tech support folks there many times. It's something to do with the hidden library files not being in the right spot in Garageband. Do you have any presets at all? My "preset browser" doesn't work, but I can get to my presets by clicking on the red bar where they load in the upper left area. Does that work on yours?
Eric Haugen Thanks. I will check it this evening. Let you know. On website Amplitube is a workaround but that is about authorisation. Don’t know if it is the same problem.
Bad luck! Clicking on the big red bar doesn’t work for me. If I click on it, it says: Import Legacy Presets or Go to Preset XChange. Option 1 leads me to a Finder window (folder Garageband) but there aren’t any presets. The other option leads me to the website (user area). But not to my Hendrix sounds. Damn.
All the Toontrack, Amplitube, and Valhalla Plugins I use I bought separately through sweetwater.com. EZ keys costs about $149, but it's well worth it :-D
Great video and hope you make another one someday. Recording is not as easy as it looks! Maybe you will save a ton of money recording studio dollars, maybe you won't. Sure is lonely!
Indeed! It's time-consuming meticulous work - you have to love it to do it. btw I made this vid recently about how much I love the Toontrack plugins: ruclips.net/video/UNtvt3tZkr0/видео.html
~E, disregard last comment/Q, i paid attention and caught your unsolicited endorsement of the product and found it online.Newb misunderstanding. thanks again....
Yeah! I highly recommend grabbing EZ Keys and EZ drummer! If your sign up for their mailing list, you'll get alerts for when they go on sale. There'll probably be a July sale - that'd be a perfect time to get them on the cheap!

Yes, fun and very helpful. I never would have thought to start with the keyboards, but it makes so much sense. You have excellent presentation skills. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Steve!
Yeah, I like to start with the keys because it's the harmony that everything piles on. Then add rhythm.
Works easier for me that way :-D
Thanks so much for sharing this, Eric! I love the audio quality of your YT videos, and really appreciate you giving us a behind-the-scenes tour. My GB journey started around 2 years ago, and as a hobbyist I am still making new discoveries. Thanks for the tips and insights!

I still find new functions everyday!
great run through - your backing tracks sound glorious.
Loving the EZKeys! Thanks this is giving me good vibes!

I've never been, but I'd love to visit. The furthest south I've been is Cancun - nice beaches there :-)

Hi Eric nice Video on Garage Band. You should do a few more of them well explained.
Thanks! I've got one more of these tutorials where I walk through my process with Toontrack plugins, but yeah I should do more!

Wow lots of Garageband knowledge. Thank you. Would also like to see on how you tweak the EQ your miked guitars in GB. :)
I like the EZ Keys approach, thanks for that tip.👍
For drums I’ve been using the built-in drummers but I’ve never been happy with the drum sounds so I’m going to check out EZ Drummer as well.
Hi what's mac are you used with GarageBand? 👍
Eric, I need you to teach me. Your guitar skill is amazing and how you teach -great. Best regards from Switzerland
Thanks!
If I ever get over to Switzerland I'll look you up!
Be my guest-anytime! :-)
Just go to the page for whatever lesson you wanna jam with :-)
Good stuff... I love GarageBand... still using a much older version, though.
Thanks!
I know there's more professional grade stuff out there, but Garageband works for me!
Thanks for the tutorial! What kind of Mac do you use? Do you know if the basic air would be suitable or is pro better for laptops?
I’m working on an old 2009 iMac. Still works! I’m gonna get a newer iMac soon though - I feel like 10 years is a good life.
I think you’d be fine with any of the macs - they make sure that GarageBand runs smooth on all their products 😎
any midi controllers that you like?
I'm a turd keys player, so I just use a Korg nano key 2 and it suits my purposes :-)
Hey Eric nice plugins help me garage band we’re u get them how get those ?
Hey man!
I got all the extra plugins on sale through sweetwater.com - but I'd mess around with Garageband's amps for a while first - there's a lot great preset sounds in there!
Eric Haugen is just nice people.
+Jayanth Avasarala Aw shucks, thanks Jayanth!!
You're too kind!
THANK YOU!!! Looks like the Mac platform, but will be very helpful for me... a know nothing in this area of creation. Thank You!!!
It's my pleasure!
Have fun with it
That Hendrix bundle looked awesome
Id like that for Pro Tools
Great video bud
Easy, Jack
You should get it man!
I have some other bundles for amplitube, but the Hendrix one is the only one I actually use. It has all the amps and pedals you need, plus presets organized by album and song!
May I ask just one more question? Do you prefer EZdrums or build-in drummer from Garageband? Thanks you!
I like the built in drummer pretty good! I only switched to Toontrack's drummer because I find it easier to work with midi samples instead of Garageband's "groove matrix."
Eric Haugen Thanks! Did you buy some bundles?
Yeah, I got the "indie folk" bundle, but mostly I use the standard samples that come with it.
Eric Haugen Christmas is coming soon! Thanks Eric!
Thanks Eric. Much appreciated. cheers
It's my pleasure, man!
How did you play/record the bass and rhythm guitar part? midi keyboard?
+Kamil Rekosz Naw, those are real guitars recorded through my Scarlett interface.
How do you get to the page you are showing?
Amplitude is an additional plugin / costs a bit of money 💰
Thank you!
Yeah buddy!
Eric, I have been looking for GarageBand training, do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Good question!
There's this guy: thegaragebandguide.com/ultimate-mixing-guide
Also, I think there's a dude on youtube with a "Garageband and Beyond" channel that's quite useful.
Thank you!
What version is this?
It's version 10, but I've added Toontrack EZ Keys, Superior Drummer, Amplitube 4, and Valhalla Vintage Verb :-)
Fantastic! Is Ezkey available on every iMac?
EZkeys is made by Toontrack.. www.toontrack.com/ezkeys-line/
steve lucero okay Thanks. So it is a plug in.
steve lucero Thanks! I checked their website. What do you recommend? They’re selling bundles.
oh wow... so many options..., it really depends on how literate you are on programming drums... if you are new to using Toontrack products then EZDrummer 2 bundles are a great place to start (I have it). The samples are awesome and the editing interface is also great. Superior Drummer 3 ( I still need to upgrade to this) is an amazing product, but a bit more complex. You can get very granular in what you are doing with SD3.
steve lucero Thanks! And tips on EZkeys? Sorry for asking :-)
It's friday morning, I don't have to work and there's a new Eric Haugen video. Life could be much worse.
Thanks Andrea!

Andrea Austoni xx
Was Cool !
Thanks Haydn!
Garageband can do some much, and once you get the hang of it so quick and easy!
Is the bass from you or is it a loop?
It me!
These days, I use EZ drummer for the beats and fills, and play everything else myself. I find it sounds more natural that way - the less loops I use the better!
@@EricHaugenGuitar aHH oK ...I dont own a bass :(
Thanks Eric.
Yeah! At some point I'll upgrade to Logic but I haven't seen the need yet!
Damn.
Oh, NOW I find this. :)
I've got one more in this series about how exactly I use Toontrack plugins - so fun!
Can u download MIDIs and basically copy and paste tracks such as a blues drum track
Yeah! It's quite easy to drag and drop or copy and paste midi files in GB!
@@EricHaugenGuitar do you know any midi websites? Can’t seem to find any THanks!
I really like toontrack stuff:
ruclips.net/video/UNtvt3tZkr0/видео.html
You can pay about $29 for the midi files by themselves
My GarageBand does not have ezekeys what do I do
Ah yes I’ve paid extra for my ez keys plugins, reverbs, and additional tools. If you wait for a sale, you can usually get ez keys for like $99
Thanks!! I cant find EZ Keys tho, anyone can assist?
All the Toontrack, Amplitube, and Valhalla Plugins I use I bought separately through sweetwater.com.
EZ keys costs about $149, but it's well worth it :-D
Did you play a real bass? Or virtual?
Real bass and guitars. Sometimes I might actually play a little keys of drums too, but mostly I use the plugins for that :-D
Eric Haugen Many thanks for sharing this with us! Learning every day from you.
~E,
disregard last comment/Q, i paid attention and caught your unsolicited endorsement of the product and found it online.Newb misunderstanding. thanks again....
Yeah! I highly recommend grabbing EZ Keys and EZ drummer!
If your sign up for their mailing list, you'll get alerts for when they go on sale. There'll probably be a July sale - that'd be a perfect time to get them on the cheap!
oh man, master output level is far to low
