Over the past 10 years I've gone from a R1200 to an F800 to a DR650 to a CRF250, then a CB500X, now I think I'll be getting one of these. The smaller they are, the more fun you have. Need to get back to my Yamaha roots.
I'm from Trinidad in the Caribbean and I ride a 2007 Yamaha DT175 (2 stroke) and the only other bike i will ever buy is the WR250R. It is my dream bike. Keep up the awesome productions.

Just finished P2. Researching my 1st DS since my 97' XR600 in 97'. WR and KLX were the final 2 picks. I am 6-1'-215 with gear and was worried about the power hauling me around and some gear 25lb+/- for overnights. This series showed me that will be no issue. Some might jack on the guys weight but not me. If i could ride or have 1/10 of his knowledge and experience i would be good with that. Awesome info and settled my next purchase of a WR250R.
Thanks for an inspiring review! I've kitted my KTM 450 similarly and the heavy cc adventure bike riders have been giggling over its tiny engine capacity. It's very refreshing to see an even smaller 250 carrying out the job - and doing so on a professional basis! At the age of 49 I'm trying to recoup all dirt riding I couldn't do earlier in my life. Out of curiosity for different bikes, my stable is growing, including YZ 250 standard, YZ 450 enduro/long haul converted, KTM 450 EXC long haul, 200 EXC full of gadgets, YZ 450 half full of gadgets, KTM Freeride E and three quads. Oh, and two snowmobiles, also with bells and whistles. I'm curious to try an EXC 350. I just bought a Montesa-Honda 260 to learn a little about the wonderful art of trial.
All my dirt bikes, apart from the Montesa, quads and snowmobiles, have carburettors. Im interested in improving the carbed bikes as much as possible. Please keep up your good work on testing new such products! The VForce3 on my 200 EXC was a revelation and kept me from trading the bike in. Now I think it has charm. I put so much candy on my bikes that I'd rather keep them and buy new bikes as technology moves onwards. Therefore, reviews on improvement products are very interesting. Next to try out is the altitude compensating and fuel saving Lectron carb. I'd like to switch to Lectron on my 200 EXC and on all my Yamahas. Adding a 350EXC would be nice. I'm curious to see if today's stock suspension has reached the levels of my custom suspension from six years ago.

Everything which is good about the wr250r, would be a good target for the product developement team in Yamaha. We've got race bikes all around the world enough for everyone. A well priced, rough and tough wr450r ,wr500r,.., would fill a huge gap in todays dual-sport market. Which is also what most people need.
Those rock outcroppings remind me so much of the trails around my area. It's almost 9,000 miles apart. Beautiful riding gentlemen. It's hard to find fault in these little bikes.
Excellent review and really appreciate the mods for comfort, performance and range. It appears the lightweight and mid-weight (RRPCB500X) ADV segment is gaining some much-desired attention for those, like me, new to ADV and not confident enough to wrestle a 500+ pound rig around on dodgy terrain -- where the fun really is. Keep up the great work, Dave, and look forward to more updates.
My girl friend has a wr 250 r and i have the xr 650 r, we've been traveling everywhere with our bikes ( Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Spain...) and i have to recognize that yamaha did a very good job with the wr 250 r. She never had a problem on her bike, i have to do 5 oil changes on my xr 650 r when she only do 1 on her wr 250 r and her oil still cleaner than mine..., she spend 3,5-4 liters/ 100 kms and i spend 7-8 liters/ 100 kms, her bike it's much more lighter and the on long roads the cruise speed is the same, 90-120 km/h, the only advantage that i see on my bike is that it goes on lower revolutions, but comparing to the other points, the wr 250 r doesn't needs a bigger engine... ;)
Cracks me up that once every couple of years I watch a motorcycle review and see the music is preformed by Tom Richardson who so impressed with his talent in the far northwest of Canada
looks like I have at least 6 more up grades before I get close to the perfect set up. Also you do need to get used to hitting the rev limiter often as it has no tach. The bike just surges hard that last few thousand revs and wants to keep climbing.
Great Video! Since weeks i'm looking through the Internet trying to find the optimal alternative between dirt, enduro and funbike - I would love to get off the roads and be able to explore some of the hidden lands and this motorcycle seems to be the perfect compromise. Many thanks for this review, it really helped me a lot. Hope I can find one to buy now :)
Been rocking my WR for three years now and it has yet to disappoint... Minus the seat, can't stand the seat! Might have to give the seat concepts a go.
Great review my man! Well done on the suspension, watching those suspenders work on your bikes looks like your boys did a great job setting it up. Great job! You would be amazed how awesome that little motor is with an Athena 290 big bore kit, head porting, and a +3mm stroker crank.....and tuning..... put out over 34 HP , and 23 lb ft of torque on the dyno. Woke that little buggar up into an absolute riot! Love the vids buddy!!!
+MrDuhfactor Yeah I've heard of the 290 kit and how it drastically improves the bike. I initially thought the kit was from Yamaha. I spoke to Greg about them. He was ambivalent. He doesn't like fiddling with a very reliable package.
Bough my wr250r last year and love it. Such a nice dual sport... Shame Yamaha decided to stop the production. Funny thing I got exactly the same mods as the bikes in this vid except for the LED lights =) Seems like I did it right =)
I'm new to Adventure Riding, so forgive me if I'm wrong. Right now i'm in analysis paralysis. I have not even purchased a bike yet. I really liked your review of the CB500X Adventure. So far i have only seen 3 CB500X Adventure on you tube. I didn't see you with much luggage hard or soft in your test ride in part 1 or 2. I know it can be done. I just don't know how comfortable it would be for long stretches at highway speeds, climbing hills at altitude. For myself I'm stuck between F800gs Adventure and the CB500X Adventure. I live in San Francisco so i will have a long ride just to get to trails. Thanks So Much for Sharing. I'm learning so much from you and others. -:)
+Walter Whiteside In terms of luggage Giant Loop have this more than covered. ( I need to declare that I am supported by GL) Their soft luggage range range for small bikes is great and very user friendly. In terms of bikes, having ridden both of them they are both excellent. But here's some things useful to do. Get a mate or a salesman to help you lean the bike over until you are struggling and then bring it up back to vertical. Do that with both the CB and BM. Now think of riding on a dirt trail and toppling over, because that's what's going to happen when you start ADV riding, and having to pick the bike up. Next, get a price for an oil filter kit for both bikes and gear lever. After you've got that price difference, go back to the previous thought of falling over, this time breaking some gear. Finally think of initial investment and ask yourself, "Am I going to get three times as much fun out of the bike that costs three times as much." The decision as to what bike you want should become clearer. :) I hope.
personally I always hoping Yamaha up the displacement to 300-330cc, I believe the current classic and suspension can take the little more torque and HP without adding too much extra weight.
So moving forward, who has or is thinking of selling their WR for a CRF300 Rally? Knowning that the WR is a overall better package and is capable riding long distances without issues, only one issue with Nerb1's bike where the countershaft sprocket bolts broke...
Great review. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Scotts steering stabilizer that was obvious on Greg's bike during the interviews. I've got one on my WR250R and it's a huge help in tight or rocky trail riding.
Nice video and a good choice for a bike to show off! It certainly must be a worthy contender for a beginning adventure rider, older rider or someone who is coming back to the sport! Keep them coming. These videos are great value. It would be interesting to see it up against the CRF300 RALLY and hear your opinions about which is the better bike!

Tell that to the Honda Africa Twin riders. lol The Wr250r is thee lightest low maintenance true dual sport on the market. Anything lighter is a high maintenance street legal dirt bike. You buy the tool for what you need. For a swiss army knife of motorcycles, the WR250r is hard to beat.

why are they sold with so few km's, obviously worried about issues ? I'm looking at getting one as a light weight adv bike to go with my Tenere, but iff they are sold at a max of 17k I'm wondering why, id do that in just over 1yr, so could not afford to update every yr or so...
Greg only sells them and moves them on because he is supported by Yamaha and receives updated bikes each year as part of the development. Those sold bikes go on to do many on and off road Km’s without any issues. I can vouch for this as I bought 2 of his kitted out bikes from him. One of the key factors of the WR250r’s is their long term reliability.
How is this Yamaha WR 250 R compared to the KTM 690 in the technical stuff? This one have a little more travel up front and back what I know. And not that much wieght. I´m looking for an adventurebike and waiting for a review of the new Husqvarna 701 enduro.
+Mandus Tjällskog I am too waiting for the 701 as a potential replacement for my KTM690. The 690 adventure is a potent bike and whilst the Yammy is good the 690 is more versatile....and there is nothing like blasting in the outback at 160 kph :)

Hallo MAD, i love you Videos. It is amaising. I hope to get my license next Year and i think about the WR 250R. is it possible to ride the WR with 100-120 km/h?? Greetings fror Germany!!
I commute on mine daily, five days a week for five months of the year. 200 km round trip on the highway. 120-130 km/h is no problem with stock gearing assuming no major hills and no headwind. With any noticeable headwind it’s usually staying out around 110. Just got my licence last year and spent a long time researching Before settling on the wr. Haven’t regretted it for a second. Only downfall is the wife isn’t comfortable on the back for more than an hr and it’s really not practical for two people if you have that as an idea.
Well now that they have discontinued it the WR250R I'm going to buy one of the few remaining at my local Yamaha dealership, looks tons funner than my heavy KLR 650! What in the world are you doing Yamaha you have hit now build upon it?!
+Andy Pandy Motovlogs For highway rides not the best choice i have a drz 400 s which is considered a much better highway bike than the wr and even it gets difficult to ride on the street any more than a few hours, My recommendation if you want to avoid huge adv bikes is the ktm 640
then you are dealing with added weight to tire you out on the techincal trails. DRZ400 weighs 25 lbs more than the WR250r and has a carb and only 5 gears! I'm sure the ktm 640 is even heavier.
Between Wr250r and DR650 which one would suits to ride with a pillion passenger better on and off the road? I would appreciate if anyone who has experience with these bikes share their experience.... I had a ktm 690enduro and sold it as I was sick of unreliability of it...
Neither. None of these sized bikes with the flat dirt bike seats are really roomy enough for two riders. I am five foot eleven inches and my wife is five foot six inches and we are extremely crammed on my wr250r and after an hour she is in pain. The dr650 is pretty much the same and I have sat in one at the dealer. Bikes like these are only really meant for one rider other than emergency. Unless, both riders were very short. Even the lovely new tenere 700 seems to be not setup for a pillion despite the rear pegs as it to has a flat, almost dirt bike sized seat from what I can tell.

Price tag for a complete seat new is steep but man is it worth it.

Do you have problems with the bigger tank ina crash?
They are robust and help protect the bike itself in a tumble. They get heavy when full so don't fill if until you need to.

+Andy Pandy Motovlogs For highway rides not the best choice i have a drz 400 s which is considered a much better highway bike than the wr and even it gets difficult to ride on the street any more than a few hours, My recommendation if you want to avoid huge adv bikes is the ktm 640
then you are dealing with added weight to tire you out on the techincal trails. DRZ400 weighs 25 lbs more than the WR250r and has a carb and only 5 gears! I'm sure the ktm 640 is even heavier.
Between Wr250r and DR650 which one would suits to ride with a pillion passenger better on and off the road?
I would appreciate if anyone who has experience with these bikes share their experience....

Neither. None of these sized bikes with the flat dirt bike seats are really roomy enough for two riders. I am five foot eleven inches and my wife is five foot six inches and we are extremely crammed on my wr250r and after an hour she is in pain. The dr650 is pretty much the same and I have sat in one at the dealer. Bikes like these are only really meant for one rider other than emergency. Unless, both riders were very short. Even the lovely new tenere 700 seems to be not setup for a pillion despite the rear pegs as it to has a flat, almost dirt bike sized seat from what I can tell.

Is the suspension upgrade expensive? I’m like 220 lbs with gear, tools and water. Do I just need springs? Or all new suspension?

+dingus153 That depends on if you have stock exhaust, gearing and how hard you ride. Different people get varying results.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter because the 250 isn't built anymore. Sad, but that's the way it is.
