@ddmaycare I mean, I get why it is important it just also felt so much like any other episode. Environmental awareness is worthy of a special, especially with spongebob. I wouldn't mind them trying again
It doesn't even make sense. Plankton is broke, and there is no way anyone with enough influence and money to build a superhighway would waste it in a failed business like the Chum bucket. Maybe there is something I'm missing, because it's been many years since I watched this episode. But still.
Something so incredibly wholesome about seeing a charity goal get absolutely obliterated. Don't care if it's $5 or $5000, seeing strangers come together to go above and beyond is amazing.
i actually mainly remember this one solely for the fact i remember a rumor that this was supposedly gonna be the last spongebob episode ever before that idea got thrown out
I remember Songebob’s Last Stand. It was kind of weird. It’s more of a PSA than anything, giving nods to protecting forests from urbanization. I’d assume it just fell to the wayside because of that.
According to Wikipedia: "Around the time of the episode's release it drew criticism from American conservatives, who argued that Nickelodeon was promoting environmentalism through this episode". Though I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the writers didnt intend on it being a PSA, they just needed a plot and it happened to be about that.
I remember being SO excited for this episode when it came out, to the point where my mom brought me the DVD from RedBox, which I still have for some reason 😭 and I still forget this exists sometimes 😭
I remember watching this episode as a kid. I never realized it was a special until I rewatched it a couple of weeks ago. I like the episode but it just doesn't have a very unique plot or setting compared to the other specials like Christmas Who Dunces and Dragons or Atlantis Squarepantis.
I remember really liking this special as a kid. It even prompted me stand on the corner by my house with a sign that said "make every day earth day", but I wrote it in pencil so absolutely no one could read it lol.
I really remember this special, especially the part with the Krusty Krab underneath the highway. It was such a break from what I normally associated Spongebob with. Seeing the KK is such a dilapidated state was really memorable. I also remember playing the flash game associated with this episode on the Nick website, and it was harder than anything i'd ever played at that point (I was 9) and my dad tried to help me beat it but he was worse than me lol
It's satisfying to hear someone bring up that the writers somehow FORGOT A MAIN CHARACTER'S NAME when writing this episode. "Sandy Squirrel" sounds like a name someone would make up just from seeing a picture of her. It's honestly a pretty good microcosm of why this special is so forgettable: The showrunners were just phoning it in during production.
I think it's interesting how this special falls into the same trap a lot of environmentalist media aimed at kids does, where the value of nature is established, ironically, by the value our protagonists can extract from it. In The Lorax (2012) it's clean air and the ability for a kid to impress a girl, in this special it's the ability to keep jellyfishing.
I think I’m kinda fine with it honestly, it’s usually established that way in the beginning, usually more as a hook for kids watching to be interested in/understand. I don’t think most kids really understand the inherent value of the environment. The thing is that later on, after things are destroyed, you do see the wider effects, allowing the kids watching it to actually some to understand a wider value to the environment than initially presented, rather than just assuming they already believe there is one.
I appreciate that perspective, it doesn't totally devalue everything the stories have to say and of course it's there to make the subject more approachable for kids. It's moreso an issue when you give this kind of kids' media the kind of genuine critical examination you would any other art, which it sadly wasn't written to stand up to. It's not the most egregious sin in the world I just see it as a cheapening of the story just because "it's for kids"
@@suedonnym that's not really cheapening a story though, it's more like making it digestible for kids who don't have the same ability to grasp the importance of certain things that adults do. I'm all for not acting like kids are completely stupid (because they're not), but there are just certain things that kids won't understand
@@MonsterRat1000 I meant moreso in a narrative sense, in that making the primary drive behind the characters advocating for the environment personal leisure kind of inherently skews the angle the fiction is taking. even if it's followed up on with other reasons, the plot ultimately only happened because the characters wanted something and the environment happened to provide

What? In my country this episode are on repeat for multiple times(could be because its educational value). And for younger me it's pretty solid episode and hippy costume are quite funny so I remember it pretty clear. I even remember how to sing Chinese translation version of jellyfish song.
I think doing an environmental story makes for a great SpongeBob special, and the visuals are really top notch here. That’s kinda the main thing I remember in this one. I just wish Plankton didn’t hijack the plot, it’s such an uninteresting turn for this special.
I remember this but I never really noticed it was a special. This used to come on a lot around 2017 or something like that on nicktoons but the this episode always came on a night time.
I’ve been watching SpongeBob for my entire childhood, every special you named at the beginning I had a vivid memory of. But the moment you named SpongeBobs last stand, I racked my brain for so long before cracking and googling it.
I remember being one of the first couple of kids who saw SpongeBob’s Last Stand when it initially aired on Nick. In fact, much like Truth or Square, Nick was advertising this big time, as it somewhat made younger kids like me hyped for it. That said, while I can’t say about my little kid thoughts on SpongeBob’s Last Stand as that was 14 years ago… I can say as an adult that the Special’s just a no brainer. It’s your standard SpongeBob special where the characters do something, as well as stopping Plankton. Compared to the Great Patty Caper, It’s a SpongeBob Christmas, and Frozen Face Off, Last Stand had potential to be one of best specials, but as it is, it’s just another attempt at trying to end SpongeBob except not really. I mean seriously, it’s clear Nickelodeon doesn’t want to end SpongeBob, so there was no point in making a special called SpongeBob’s Last Stand, when it’s not even the series finale of the show. The special really doesn’t feel like a finale, in fact I argue Truth Or Square would’ve been a better finale to the Tibet Era of SpongeBob (I say Tibet because we all know the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie’s basically the end of the Hillenburg Era, unless you count Season 4 as the end of the Hillenburg Era despite it being the first season Paul Tibbit was a Showrunner of) but that’s just me.
This is hands down one of my favorite specials! I’ve never forgotten about this one! I even learned the songs dispite it being the most insane tounge twister I’ve ever done😭

This actually has been my favorite special since childhood! Basically just because of nostalgia, though. I didn't have cable or streaming growing up, and this was on one of the only Spongebob DVDs I owned. Growing up it was always a huge favorite of mine
This special was actually well... special to me because it caught me off-guard. I had a bootleg DVD (3rd-world problems) that contains random assortment of episodes that aren't Seasons 1-4 (there's a lot of Seasons 1-3 bootleg DVDs that I got sick of tired of those), and Last Stand caught me off-guard when it felt like it was running a lot longer than a regular episode and the story felt like SpongeBob and Patrick were losing hard, so I was actually hooked. That small scene of SpongeBob "fainting" after hearing Krabs executing his plan, then Squidward asking what is it, him being shocked and comforting SpongeBob hit hard for a very young me.
Hey man I really wish I was able to donate money to this, but I want to congratulate you on reaching nearly TEN TIMES your set out goal! Amazing video and great analysis.

This is the episode with the edge of nowhere! Legit the only scene I remembered from this epidsode.
All we've been tryna say is give Jellyfish Fields a chance
