I see Gary as a tragic character. He has a very deep and intricate mind, but he's in a pets body, meaning he can only have his mind to keep him company, endlessly developing and practicing philosophy without purpose or point. He doesn't have any struggles except for spongebob and anyone who takes care of him, unable to voice his discontent, unable to improve his situation without sheer luck.
If spongebob, who is a major authoritive force, but mostly still shows signs of kindness takes care of him, He gets to live a standard pet life, mabye sun tanning on the roof, or reading spongebos books occasionally. If Patrick, who actively terrorizes him, takes care of him, he has to fear for his life. If squidward, who is neglectful takes care of him, he has to find his own way to survive. If Mr. Krabs gets his hands on him, he is reduced to a tool. If plankton gets his hands on him, he loses his identity and comfort, and has to fight to get it back.
A carefree, yet tragic life. Hey, at least he can be free in his dreams. (Man, no wonder Gary was angry at spongebob when he invaded his dream...)

to be fair the 7DS are pretty common character flaws that most characters or people have in one way or another, it's almost like they're not meant to be considered some ultimate evil but instead the 7 fundamental traits that make up all negative behaviours.
Yeah, it’s almost like they were made to discourage negative traits in people.
@@Azurethewolf168 I think to some extent the 7DS are necessary, can you have ambition without greed? can you have pride (in the virtuous sense like self esteem) with a little bit of vanity? Can you relax without sloth? maybe gluttony has no redeeming value, and lust is gluttony for sex so maybe those 2 are just no good.

I think there's a misunderstanding of what gluttony means. It's not just something to do with food it's overindulgence so that could mean partying too much just doing too much of everything that makes you happy.
You make a solid point! I was basing the video's idea off of the generic stuff I could find online so that's why it's all food related. Overindulgence changes my thoughts on the theory, now I'm wondering if I could've looked at Squidward (like the whole boredom sequence in Squidville from Season 2). Makes me think a lot more about the theory, thanks for the feedback!

Tbh, Patrick is way more like gluttony than Gary is (since Patrick usually eats a lot of food and in The Patrick Star Show, he literally eaten and killed two innocent people on live television).
Also this video made me realize how abusive SpongeBob is to Gary. No wonder why SpongeBob was blaming Gary when he was being eaten alive in A Pal for Gary, it was all leading up to this. Also have you seen what SpongeBob did at the end of the season 5 episode "SpongeBib vs. the Patty Gadget?"

I can't see any possibility of Gary being chosen for gluttony other than whoever started the theory got done with a few characters, ran out, and had to give a "sure I guess" to one of them

Even if the 7 sins were intended for the series I don't think Gary was apart of them. Sure Gary is a main character in the show but if you look at the original pitch bible for SpongeBob Gary is only mentioned once and not even as a character profile.

really amazing video so far. about 8 minutes in but its worth noting:
regular show had a similiar issue with saturation. one episode (forget what it was called but it was about a weight lifting tourtamnet.) had the opposite issue where the colors were SUPER SUPER saturated instead of being slightly more desaturated.
Yes there wasn’t a deleted scene where squidward turned into a snail that was a regular scene intended to be in the episode I remember it when I was 4 years old

It's so dumb because each sin really just a simple character flaw (being a lazy doofus, being a grump, being a little too lovey-dovey?) and not some nefarious symbolism
The nuclear mutation theory really isn’t that wrong of a theory.
Bikini bottom is based off of bikini atoll, a place where nuclear weapons were tested, and if I remember correctly there was an episode where everyone except Sandy “unmutated” into normal sea life.
TL;DR that mutation theory has some solid footing from what I was able to gather
now that you have proven that gary is not gluttony you now must make a video for each of the cast and a final one putting the correcrt characters into the 7 deadly sins

The spongebob abuse of gary thing is just one example of how practically everyone one in SpongeBob was kinda a awful person even before the seasonal rot, a little depressing to be honest.

i liked this video for the most part. i think using more clips than screenshots would make it better though. i really like your humor and you make some great jokes in this. visually there isn't a whole lot going on in the video so the part where you put the stats on screen of how often gary is seen with food was good! but also bad because you don't say it out loud. remember that if your video isn't engaging enough for people to watch and they just listen, they'll miss out on important details like those stats. just some helpful tips and thanks for the video!
True for all that! This was my first video so it was just dipping my toes into this to try it out, so the quality kinda sucks at some points. I honestly didn't think the video would do so well, but of course it _had_ to be the video with a ton of rookie mistakes lol. Still, thanks for the feedback!

The Squidward turns into a snail scene does exist, but idk if it was just part of the DVD I watched the episode on, I no longer have the disc but I remember it was something like a Halloween special, it included 3 episodes one was when squidward forgets about Gary, another was the Halloween episode where spongebob shaves himself to be a ghost, and the last one…. I can’t remember off the top of my head

that 7 deadly sins shit is... whatever. But like, Patrick is sloth? Gary is gluttony? Reverse that shit. Patrick showed gluttonous behaviour more times than gary IN THIS VIDEO ABOUT GARY BEING A GLUTTON. Gary is a snail! Snails are SLOW, one might even say SLOTHFUL.
Plus Gary's favorite pastime is watching TV.
Personally, I still think Gary being voiced by Keith David that one time is a Coraline reference given he voiced the cat in that movie

There's quite a few theories I believe(Many because they are funny.) but the main theory I believe is the nuclear one. Mainly because it's not a theory it's been confirmed that it's based on Bikini Atoll a nuclear test site.
Maybe someone said this already but Procrastination got censored a little after the first airing. The part where Sponge imagines his friends outside having fun got cut cause Patrick is rubbing sunscreen on Sandy's shoulders. I think some people though he was rubbing her boobs or something? I forget official line but in re-airings, that scene was removed. I think they fucked up the color when Nick had it edited. That's always been my theory anyway

The speaker blowing yelling thing for the sake of a punchline is genuinely funny and you do it well, but I think it should be a little more reserved. Like 2 times in a video might be a cap for a lot of people, but hey, that could just be me.
I completely agree, and the speaker cap is mainly unintentional. This was my first vid so I had no idea how to even get a semi-decent mic recording. It gets better with each new video on the channel I promise lol
I feel like the roles are all wrong which is why Gary gets such an unfitting role. Patrick is an easy Gluttony. Squidward is easily Pride. SpongeBob is Wrath (this video damn near proves it). Plankton Envy. Krabs Greed. Sandy Lust (the biggest stretch, but her thrist for knowledge and bikini figure could do enough). And lastly, Gary is Sloth.
Pets/ Dogs and Cats don't know the next time there going to eat so they eat how much is in there thing

The thing is, I feel you could pose the same theory to any screwball comedy with an eclectic cast. The goal is to give each character some unique flaw, which due to its intrinsic ties to studied human behavior leads to each of them often vaguely resembling one of the seven sins. It's yet another case of people trying to find a "deeper meaning" in something when the answer is so much simpler if you just have a basic understanding of what characters, themes, and narratives make for compelling entertainment. It just ain't that deep bro.
That was my thought when going into the theory, I got tired of hearing it everywhere lol.
