In Dec 2021 I went to a Loctician to get starter Locs. After each appointment my scalp would become so inflamed, red and itchy that sores started to develop. By March 2022 It got so bad I cut of two years of growth to tend to my scalp care. In Oct 2022 after 7 months of regrowth I decided to try Locs again and the scalp problem started all over again. I saw this video and decided to give it a try and I haven't had one single scalp issue since. The problem was oils! This works for me. Thank you 👍🏽

I think it depends on the oil. I spray my locs with rose water and apply a dime-sized amount of jojoba oil. I wash every two months. My locs are thriving. No dandruff, no stink etc. I do keep mines tied up most times though. We don't have to overthink this one.

I stopped using oils 2 months ago and I love it!
3-4 months ago (Feb / March) I had to wean myself off using them instead of stopping completely bc my hair wasn’t used to it. After doing that, I was able to stop completely in April😊🎉
Our locs don’t need oils to thrive. In fact, the same way that products attract lint, oils attract them too (especially if you’re also heavy handed with it).
Pros of using no oils: 1. lint has nothing to hold onto once it touches your hair so it falls out easily🥳
    2. Your locs dry faster after they have been wet / damp bc there’s no oil barrier preventing the water from leaving your locs
    3. No oils from your locs will touch your face and create breakouts
    4. You can touch your hair whenever you’d like without the fear of having oil on your hands (my personal fave since I play in my hair a lot!)
The list of pros goes on & on.
Being able to go on an oil free loc journey really starts with your choice of shampoo. Believe it or not, there are clarifying shampoos out here that won’t leave your locs feeling crispy / crunchy but will still have your hair clean. Once you find the one for you, it’ll be easier to use no oils since you won’t feel like you need to replenish the “moisture.” I use Avalon Organics Clarifying Lemon shampoo & it’s great for me (it’s also Vegan🎊)
I do also incorporate rose water. Nowadays, I only use it as a deodorizer. For example, if I’ve done a lot of sweating but it’s not time for me to wash yet, then I’ll use rosewater. My hair already feels soft once it’s dry, but when I add rosewater, it does get a bit softer.
Thanks for sharing! Congratss on 3k🎉🎉🎉

    • @Mdee17
      @Mdee17 3 года назад +7

@@LakeiaCreates-2010 Since I started completely using no oil (March / April), I haven’t done a retwist. I don’t see much of a point in retwisting my locs now that they’ve gotten thicker (I’m 2yrs in). They loc very close to the root so I don’t have much new growth to retwist anyway. But, whenever I plan to do a retwist, I’ll only be using rosewater. In all honesty, water holds a retwist just fine. Retwists aren’t meant to last anyway. I’ve been doing a lot of braidouts in place of a retwist tho & for that I either use plain (bottled) water or I use water & rosewater.

It’s all about finding balance. There are oils that actually will penetrate the hair shaft thus adding in hydration. On the flip side knowing your hairs porosity is also key. Some people’s cuticles are closed tighter than others. That’s why it’s important to build a routine around your hairs porosity level bc that what determines how you hydrate your hair.

I agree! And people also aren’t aware of the fact that in order for most oil to actually penetrate, there needs to be a carrier oil. Carrier oils include jojoba, argan, and almond oil. Then you can mix your other oils with that to ensure everything is penetrating and not sitting on top of the hair.
My mixture for my locs is : argan, jojoba, rosehip seed oil, macadamia nut oil, and pumpkin seed oil. It literally immediately seeps into my hair and there is no residue at all, my locs just end up shiny. And I only add it to my scalp, not directly to the locs.

This video is a little old, but I wanted to share my thoughts. I only started applying oils to my scalp when people kept hyping up that grease isn’t ok and oils are better. I tried applying oils to my scalp and it has been a struggle to maintain. I noticed I get dandruff 2 days later after I have washed my hair. I realize what caused it and it was because the oils I have been using on my scalp which clogs pores and causes dandruff. I did tons of research as to why my scalp kept getting itchy and flaky with dandruff every time I put oils in it and I found that my scalp creates its own natural sebum oils so there’s no need to apply oils in it. Applying oils to the scalp can be good for some people, but my scalp can’t handle it. I get bumps and redness every time I apply any oil to my scalp. I will definitely try your method and see how things go. Thanks for sharing 💕

How does a new natural even know what to do these days!!

I have had locs for 3 years now and all I do for daily moisture is water or rose water and Hawaiian Silky 14 in 1 (scalp only) and my locs are lightweight, soft, and fluffy feeling. No stiff, crunchy, crispy locs for me lol. Not putting a layer of deep penetrating moisture before sealing your hair in oil, will lead to you sealing in nothing but dryness. I don't believe in using oil regularly, but I'll use a lightweight oil maybe once every 2-3 weeks.

They build up over time and make your hair dirtier than it needs to be. Best thing I've found is keeping the routine super simple with regular washings using raw acv, twisting with crochet hook, spray water as needed and massaging the scalp every couple of days to release the natural oils in the scalp. So I put it in the search bar and so many videos of RUclipsrs sharing their experiences with no oils being used in their Locs. I just got my first re-twist after having my second set of locs installed about seven or eight weeks ago. And I’m here for this. I cut And then combed out my five-year set of locs and I was devastated to have to do so, but I had so much lint buildup I had gotten obsessed with taking the tweezers and attempting to get the lint out of each loc, but my locs were literally completely infused with lint. I am waiting on a bottle of lemon grass oil… Because I love the smell and some rosemary oil. But I don’t think I’m going to use it. I used to put so many oils in my locs. My favorite was black castor oil with coconut oil. I’ve learned that it’s a very heavy based essential oil and that of course it would attract lint. I’m going to try this method. I already use the exact same leave in conditioner mist. But I certainly do not want to make the same mistakes of using all of those essential oils in my locks and on my locs, down the shaft of my locs. I would just squeeze in the oil. Not knowing the difference between moisturizing oils and sealing oils will also dry your hair out . I’ve seen so many people with locs and I even have them those two things alone are extremely important and can change your journey tremendously. That’s just what I’ve seen around me and I only had build up and lint for when I didn’t regularly hydrate and moisturize my locs .

After being loc’d for nearly 20 months, I’m moving away from adding oils directly to my locs, but still seal in moisture (💧) with oil on my scalp.
I checked out CJ’s Instagram and love what she’s doing and her whole mission…but…no one’s talking about the importance of choosing quality ingredients.
I used to sell natural products and currently formulate my own as a herbalist. I’m bothered by the fact that no one differentiates between NATURAL oils and SYNTHETIC/processed oils. They get lumped in the same category but they both behave very differently.
The problem with oils/butters is what this video shows they act as a sealant/protectant. Which means they sit ON the hair shaft. A problem that prevents moisture, buildup etc.
However, there are oils and butters that are SUPER emollients. They don’t sit on the hair shaft, but rather, are absorbed.
These are the oils that should/can be used.
Example: macadamia nut, avocado oil, Argan. They should be cold-pressed, Virgin oils which can be expensive and hard to find because they are typically processed for shelf life stability.
I’m still using my super emollient oils on my scalp and will do so depending on what my hair needs.
    Good thought provoking video!👍🏽

I know this video is old lol but I have to comment. I have seborrheic dermatitis. Normally I would start getting irritation within a week. I would wash my hair weekly. I started eating better and losing weight so I didn’t get the flare ups nearly as bad as before. However, I knew once I got locs I didn’t want the flaking and have to wash my hair weekly. So, I started experimenting with my routine. As a loose natural we’re told to seal in moisture with oils so I never thought to change this back then. However, with locs I felt it was okay to take this away. I opted for rosewater with glycerine. Since glycerine attracts water, I figured my hair would be moisturized. SO GLAD I DID!!!!! Omggg oils really do irritate your scalp when you have scalp conditions. A lot of oils have acids in them that are irritating. Like Lauric acid in coconut oil. I’m currently about to go into my 3rd week with no flare ups!!!! So happy and I advise anyone to experiment with their routine as well. I spray my starter locs /scalp everyday with rosewater and glycerine.

I don’t believe you have to completely get rid of using oils. I do💯believe it just depends on your hair, hair texture and just really knowing your hair and how your hair responds to products. I also believe it depends on how often you’re doing it and the oils you’re using. However, everyone’s hair and scalp is different. I am starting my love journey and recently learned I am allergic to a lot of ingredients in hair products therefore for me I cannot use a lot of oils or shampoos and conditioners or leave conditioners so water is usually my base but I have found that grape seed oil does pretty good for me. I don’t use it every day maybe 2x a week. It is probably one of the lightest oils I could find that will relieve my scalp itch and dryness. But yes you have to do what works for you. There is no right or wrong answer. If your responds well then keep doing it.

You're right though we are so used to using products but oils seems to be the more natural choice than the products we used to use but we shouldn't over do it . Your locs are very nice!!

Everything your saying is right, only one thing. Yes oil repels water but it's suppose to be used to seal in the moisture not to use before washing. That's why with locs we don't wash our hair too often and only put your oils on your scalp. But that works for me. I allow my hair to dry and soak up as much water as possible and right before it's too dry apply the oil.
Can't go wrong with aloe Vera though.

@@tyrathethird I feel you. There's too many nuances when it come to everyone's regiment. I like to experiment tho. At one point I almost gave up on oils until I got it right

It's funny how we do so much to our hair. Water and herbal tea (rosemary & neem) 🍵 works for me. Shampoo with black soap once a while.

Wow I was like this girl is tripping at first ! After watching I can definitely see how this works. In my personal experience I would use oil or even see others use oil when **not moisturizing every day . In addition to that also washing consistently as oil is* in fact a barrier. Thank you so much this was very insightful and challenged my old way of thinking !

okay so I got a question. I noticed that she said oil deflects moisture, so what does that mean for our roots? Because our scalps produces its own natural oil called Sebum*. So does that mean our roots are deflecting moisture? Or is the Sebum* enough?

Sebum sweetie ❤ the cerebrum is a part of the brain. Sebum is the oil that our sebaceous glands naturally secretes.

I haven't found anything that states the natural oils in our scalp can deflect moisture.

@@JaiHow2011 lmaooooo!! yes!! OMG, my bad, im so embarrassed, but that's what i meant. I just knew it was an oil that our scalp creates on its own. Thank you so much cause girl I was loud and wrong just now! LOL!

I shampoo my hair but I don’t use conditioner what I noticed is oils and my scalp do not get along. I mist my hair with aloe vera juice/rose water and add macadamia nut healing oil to my locs maybe 2 times a week that’s it. My hair feels soooooo soft with the oils being on my scalp in the past they caused so much build up.

I'm dying at the public rage demonstration 3:44! LOL. I'm a loose natural (with an eye on starting locs soon) and I've virtually cut oil out too. Can't get enough of water! I use a water based moisturiser, something OLD SKOOL that my curly permed Mum would use...nothing fancy, once a week, only water and rosewater spritz's daily and a good massage. So low maintenance it's a joke, and that leaves my hair soft, no build up (little fatty product use) and no issues with scalp. If I use oil, it's to pre-poo. Great video - content and the lol's :)
