Honolulu, HI...about 8 years old swimming with my sister...I saw what I thought was a part of my sisters bathing suit strap as we were swimming close to each other...Went to pick it up while saying "Patty I found your bath.....screams start bellowing from me, walked out of water onto the beach, the next thing I know I have a blanket on me and a bunch of people looking down at me, then I was whisked away in an ambulance. Said all that to say, don't be grabbing any string-straps out of the ocean it just might sting you until you faint! Perhaps being Portuguese, this Portuguese Man of War had a connection to me as my sister is Japanese....life was not fair that day, LOL!
What an excellent story, my friend. Thank you for posting and sharing it. :) Wow.. That portuguese man o' war wanted to hug a fellow portuguese person! HAHAHA All jokes aside, this is such a rare story and man, i bet it HURT. For you to faint is on another level.
Yes! So the jelly head part is another organism as well. I found this on a website: "The top zooid, which resembles a blob with the aforementioned mohawk, is the pneumatophore. It's basically a gas-filled bag that allows the man-of-war to float. The next two zooids, gastrozooids and dactylozooids, are the man-of-war's tentacles. The former, as their name implies, are the organism's feeding tentacles. The latter are for defense and capturing prey. The final zooid, gonozooids, deal with reproduction." (www.treehugger.com/portuguese-man-war-facts-4864196) It appears that each part of the creature are all different organisms in this siphonophore. :O Amazing!! And phenomenal question
My grandad was stung by a man o war jellyfish when he was in the navy during WW2. He said it was the most painful experience of his life.....and that includes kidney stones. He was charged for getting stung by his superiors too, lol! Stung twice 😂

i got stung by one as kid, definitely the most painful experience ever the painful sting hits instantly like an electric shock. getting stung by dead ones is bad, but a living one is way worse, i got stung in my thigh and left a mark similar to a bruise for a week that same spot hurts to even touch
Good Lord. I have not heard of the distinction between a living and dead sting. I'll take it from you though-- that is not the way to suffer. :( Thank you for sharing !!
I just came back from panama city Beach and these were all over the Shore. I knew not to touch them bc of the tentacles. Glad I didn't. They were really cool looking tho.
Ah, yes Saranda! I am currently working on the Killer Whale short, and will do the blanket octopus right after it :)) Will be up sometime soon! (Probably next week) Thank you for taking the time to suggest, and welcome to the Maredis Underwater Squad!!
hemingway would have been the type of writer to try and get stung by a man o war to write about his experiences HAHAHA I remember reading the Sun also Rises and being amazed at how much visceral emotion he put into a daily experience
that's actually a great question, Rusty! The answer to that is actually: no-- only the zooids specialized in defense can sting you. So tapping the top of a man o' war should not hurt you ^^
We have blue bottles here in Australia, Man o War is named differently here. Also I would rather get tattooed anywhere on my body over getting done by one of them
I saw 2 of them Daytona Beach! They are very pretty but glad they were on the beach sand. Another crazy pretty but scary creature I found was an Atlanticus glacous. I can’t spell😅 sea dragon. I’m from San Francisco so our beach is not tropical 😂
I love how some people still believe that the Portuguese man o' war is a jellyfish we actually it’s really not a jellyfish in fact it’s actually a siphonophore
Yes! It's a siphonophore. That's so crazy to me how there are so many organisms that make up this one colony. The ocean is a fascinating, almost alien place :) Thank you for sharing Red. You are absolutely right.

I got stung twice.. 2 days in a row in Hawaii. Never felt so much pain. It was horrible. Like 20 of us got stung the first day. This was 35 years ago and to this day I always think about them before i surf or go in the ocean... I want to stay away from these dudes.. Way more pain than when I broke my arm in 6 places or when i broke my foot .
More pain than when you broke your arm in 6 PLACES??? GOOD LORD THESE THINGS MUST HURT. OOMPH. And TWO DAYS IN A ROW????? YOU'RE A TROOPER MATE :O can't imagine that, but absolute props to you madlad!
Ahhh excellent question!! I believe Mahi Mahi eat the man o war fish! The special fish that live around the man o war without being hurt. :) But they don't eat the tentacles and the Portuguese Man O' War itself hehe Love the question!
The only reason I could see the glacous Atlanticus is because the sand was so white and this tiny little thing was bright blue. I took a picture and learned on Google, this tiny creature lives off of the Portuguese Man of War! It’s very pretty but dangerous! I showed the picture to the bartender and he said “I don’t know what that thing is but that s$@& will F$&@ you up as far as Glacous Atlanticus 😂
they are really quite intelligent and alien-like. I think camouflage is even more scary in my opinion.. Imagine if our militaries could harness that power LOL Planet of the Octopi

I don't know why I got recommended this considering I'm terrified of the ocean even in theory, but your video is extremely well done! Very informative and polished my dude.
Thank you very much for the very nice encouragement. :) I think the ocean is both a place to be admired, explored, but respected. I hope this community can continue to grow and make positive conservation changes for the ocean.
Beautiful creature.
beautiful creature indeed. I still sometimes cannot believe that animals like this are just floating somewhere in our world. Our oceans are truly majestic!!
@@maredis9564 And Dangerous at the same time
@@onlineactive5346 yes, indeed :P Quite so. I wouldn't want to run into 1,000 of these when I'm diving.
Your voice is so calming and soothing🥰 It actually 😴 relaxes me and makes me forget about the danger of this creature...😅
I’m so glad to hear hehe. :) hope you found the video enjoyable and informative!!
Thank you for taking the time to comment jet !
@@maredis9564 I definitely enjoyed it very much. The content and the way you presented it are very interesting. Hopefully I can see more interesting videos from you soon😊
@@jetw9522 :)) Of course! I hope you'll enjoy the next one, on the killer whale~~

HAHAHA
All jokes aside, this is such a rare story and man, i bet it HURT. For you to faint is on another level.
So wait, since each part is an organism, is the jelly head also another organism or is it just what connects them?
Yes! So the jelly head part is another organism as well. I found this on a website:
"The top zooid, which resembles a blob with the aforementioned mohawk, is the pneumatophore. It's basically a gas-filled bag that allows the man-of-war to float. The next two zooids, gastrozooids and dactylozooids, are the man-of-war's tentacles. The former, as their name implies, are the organism's feeding tentacles. The latter are for defense and capturing prey. The final zooid, gonozooids, deal with reproduction." (www.treehugger.com/portuguese-man-war-facts-4864196)
It appears that each part of the creature are all different organisms in this siphonophore. :O Amazing!! And phenomenal question
@@maredis9564 Thanks for the info :) I think I missed that part in the video. I had to rewatch it.
2:30 That's just luv baybay..!!
My grandad was stung by a man o war jellyfish when he was in the navy during WW2. He said it was the most painful experience of his life.....and that includes kidney stones. He was charged for getting stung by his superiors too, lol! Stung twice 😂
Wow... Your granddad sounds like a beast. What a story-- getting charged for getting stung by a man o' war. Doesn't get more bada** then that :D Hahaha! Thanks for sharing your story Pommie bears!!
The sunfish is actually called the moonfish in portuguese.
i got stung by one as kid, definitely the most painful experience ever the painful sting hits instantly like an electric shock. getting stung by dead ones is bad, but a living one is way worse, i got stung in my thigh and left a mark similar to a bruise for a week that same spot hurts to even touch
Good Lord. I have not heard of the distinction between a living and dead sting. I'll take it from you though-- that is not the way to suffer. :( Thank you for sharing !!
I got stung by one these 7 years ago while I was in the ocean. It was so horrible.
Thank you for sharing with us, James. I've heard it's an excruciating pain. On a scale of 1-10, how bad was it, if you don't mind me asking? :)
@@maredis9564 definitely a 9.
soo cool
They are quite common, if you are far enough from land.
Haha....ive been stung on my lip by one and arm (wasnt that bad on arm, my lip was stung badly but peeled later so not much scarring)
the group partner who actually does the work:
I just came back from panama city Beach and these were all over the Shore. I knew not to touch them bc of the tentacles. Glad I didn't. They were really cool looking tho.
If these things grow legs and breath land air we are screwed along with the fact we got a grizzly x polar bear fanfiction running around
don't even
STOP
I DON'T WANT TO THINK ABOUT THAT
Can you cover the octopus?
Ah, yes Saranda! I am currently working on the Killer Whale short, and will do the blanket octopus right after it :)) Will be up sometime soon! (Probably next week) Thank you for taking the time to suggest, and welcome to the Maredis Underwater Squad!!
This is very interesting 😲
right?? Nature is absolutely bonkers sometimes :O
Steve:WOW JELLYFISH MAN 0 WAR!!!😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯😯 JELLYFISH MAN 0 WAR
The next marine animal you should cover is the blue-ringed octopus.
Hey Marvin! Thanks for the suggestion, video coming soon :))
@@maredis9564 you're welcome pal
“Old man and the sea” i wanted to know why santiago hates them lol
hemingway would have been the type of writer to try and get stung by a man o war to write about his experiences HAHAHA
I remember reading the Sun also Rises and being amazed at how much visceral emotion he put into a daily experience
They is literally the grossest, most disturbing creature I have ever set eyes on. I'm so happy I live in the middle of landlocked Western PA.
Can the non tenicals part sting u
that's actually a great question, Rusty!
The answer to that is actually: no-- only the zooids specialized in defense can sting you. So tapping the top of a man o' war should not hurt you ^^
was body surfing with a mate in Oz, a bluebottle tentacle wrapped around his noodelydoo. OUCH and yet another reason speedos are a bad idea
The creator said that in the first 60 seconds!! Wtf!
Ill subscribe cuz you got some pretty interesting content and also cuz you barely have subscribers c: im sure itll grow in no time
Thank you so much for the kind words and support, Evi!

So we need to save the turtles more than never.
Scary the how the sea is wonder if blue monster get into a battle with a more deadly creature? what bout a changing color octopus?
Cool you are awesome
You’re too kind Jennifer! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the vid :)
A 300 FT (91 meter for my non US friends) CREATURE?!!!?
👀
and they TRAVEL IN GROUPS OF OVER A THOUSAND
That's too many big numbers, too long, too many >D
i have been stunk by a man of wor
I got stung twice.. 2 days in a row in Hawaii. Never felt so much pain. It was horrible. Like 20 of us got stung the first day. This was 35 years ago and to this day I always think about them before i surf or go in the ocean... I want to stay away from these dudes.. Way more pain than when I broke my arm in 6 places or when i broke my foot .
More pain than when you broke your arm in 6 PLACES??? GOOD LORD THESE THINGS MUST HURT. OOMPH. And TWO DAYS IN A ROW?????
YOU'RE A TROOPER MATE :O
can't imagine that, but absolute props to you madlad!
I like your voice.
Oh, thank you!
And for taking the time to watch/comment hehe, hope it was somewhat informative :P
How about oysters?
Could definitely do a video on these little beasts :) Will put it in the queue! Thanks for watching Jerry
Cool music
Thank you Revlon my friend :)
Welcome aboard to the Maredis Underwater Squad!!
don't mahi mahi eat man o war?
Ahhh excellent question!! I believe Mahi Mahi eat the man o war fish! The special fish that live around the man o war without being hurt. :) But they don't eat the tentacles and the Portuguese Man O' War itself hehe
Love the question!
Zoids? Did Shaggy from Scooby-Doo doo name them?
The only reason I could see the glacous Atlanticus is because the sand was so white and this tiny little thing was bright blue. I took a picture and learned on Google, this tiny creature lives off of the Portuguese Man of War! It’s very pretty but dangerous! I showed the picture to the bartender and he said “I don’t know what that thing is but that s$@& will F$&@ you up as far as Glacous Atlanticus 😂
Octopi are like the apes of the sea
Or even more evolved
they are really quite intelligent and alien-like. I think camouflage is even more scary in my opinion.. Imagine if our militaries could harness that power LOL
Planet of the Octopi
I've been stung by it and it felt like alcohol when you pour it on your bruise
Portuguese Man’O’War ?
In German it’s called „Portuguese Galley“,
floating like a ship...
Hhh yes Aoilpe!! The man o war was a portuguese galley back in the day, so this is correct too. Isn’t it so cool that nature has its own little mini death-ships? Hahahah :D
okay kids maybe let's not pick up that plastic bag in the middle of the beach today okay?
"do you ever feel like a plastic bag"
HAHAHA, this would be terrifying as a kid though
Wow!!! Ouch haha he said starting 2021
Sir @0:09, I do not EVER want to meet with any pleasure one of these ghastly beings while underwater 🕊
>D< HAHAHAHA, it would be a pretty scary thing to see just hordes of these creatures floating back up huh
could not agree more! but they are fascinatingggg creatures :)
Oof that will hurt you very much
