  • Encountering a smelly and dirty public toilet can be unpleasant, but sometimes we have no choice but to use them.
Here are some tips and tricks to help you navigate such situations while maintaining hygiene as much as possible:
    1. Check for alternatives: If possible, explore nearby locations to find a cleaner restroom. Shopping malls, restaurants, or cafes tend to have better-maintained facilities.
    2. Carry essential items: Be prepared by carrying essential items such as tissue paper, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer. These can come in handy to create a barrier between you and the toilet seat or to clean surfaces before use.
    3. Line the seat: Use toilet seat covers, if available, or place a layer of toilet paper on the seat before sitting down. This helps to avoid direct contact with the surface.
    4. Use the hover method: If you prefer not to sit directly on the seat, use the "hover" method. Hover above the seat without making contact with it, but be cautious as this might require some balance.
    5. Choose a cleaner stall: If there are multiple stalls available, inspect each one and choose the cleanest option. Sometimes the first stall is the most used and, consequently, the dirtiest.
    6. Mindful flushing: Use your foot to flush the toilet or flush using a tissue paper and throw it in the bin. This reduces direct contact with potentially unclean surfaces.
    7. Avoid touching surfaces: Use your elbow or a tissue to operate door handles, faucets, and other surfaces in the restroom to minimize contact with germs.
    8. Time your visit: Try to visit public restrooms during off-peak hours when they are likely to be less crowded and may have been recently cleaned.
    9. Wash hands thoroughly: After using the restroom, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.
    10. Maintain personal hygiene: After using the restroom, avoid touching your face, mouth, or eyes until you have the chance to wash your hands.
    11. Dispose of waste properly: If the trash bin is full or overflowing, carry your used tissues or wipes in a small resealable bag until you find a suitable place to dispose of them.
    12. Maintain a positive attitude: Remember that this is only a temporary inconvenience, and you can take steps to minimize your exposure to unhygienic conditions.
While these tips can help reduce your exposure to germs and maintain personal hygiene in a less-than-ideal restroom, it's essential to be aware that some public facilities might simply be inadequately maintained. If you feel that a public restroom is unacceptably unhygienic or hazardous, consider reporting the issue to the relevant authorities or the establishment's management.
