Forgiving is the key word here. Don't be so hard to yourself. Yes, sometimes we tend to say stupid and bad things, but you know what? You are a human being and you have emotions. Look it positive, you have realized what you did and I think that is a good thing.

I grew up in the Nintendo vs. Sega console wars (Genesis vs. SNES). I honestly didn't experience any hate with other kids with video games. I only had a Genesis and another friend had an SNES. We actually would trade consoles occasionally so we could try the console we didn't own. It actually made our bond with video games _stronger_ !
Although, I do agree that online gaming can lead to a bit of hate and anger. This is especially true if the other player that is constantly winning is also behaving in a toxic manner...it just saps the fun out of the game.

Amazing. I always love the way you make me think and rethink my hobby.
I 'hated' the direction Video Games took from 1996 - 2010 (ish) thus why I hold strangely passionate negative feelings towards Halo, COD, Doom, GoldenEye, and many other well regarded games. Turns out certain frame rates give me motion sickness and early 3D and FPS were literally making me sick. I remember falling over after playing Cabela's on the PS3 and I actually fainted which is how I figured this out. In terms of understandable 'hate' I feel that's up there.

Quick little story, I took a weight lifting class my freshman year & our teacher was super pumped that ATARI was back in 1993. Being a gamer I asked if I could go to his house & check it out. Right off the back the Jaguar only came with 1 controller, so he got mad a bit there. I can't remember what game he had might of been Aliens, but he lost real quick & the graphics were not to his liking & broke the controller. I awkwardly left & never returned. It is safe to say I've never seen anything like that & it is forever burned into my mind. Never go to a teachers house kids!

One thing to dislike about retro gaming (“hate” is too strong a word) is represented by one of games you were playing: Castlevania X for SNES. Some games are just too dang expensive if you want original hardware. There’s always the Japanese versions (as long as it’s not an RPG), but it’s only a matter of time until they climb in value too. Otherwise, I love the hobby, and even love hating on bad games.

    My History Timeline (UK).
    Ww1 - Commodore 64 vs Spectrum.
I had the C64 and it was great, I did enjoy playing my friends spectrum but it could not compare to the C64!
Ww2 - Sega Master system vs Nes.
The Sega Master system was the console of choice here and was by far more popular than the nes - I loved the master system and it's games. (The nes did gain popularity but only when the 90's came and it was being sold cheaper as a budget console.) These days I love both of them and enjoyed exploring the nes library in later years.
Ww3 (The big one) - The Sega megadrive was the console to have and most popular but when the snes came out Nintendo finally had something to compete with!
I had the megadrive and would have all the arguments about sonic vs mario etc, but one game would change it all - Streetfighter 2!
When that game released for the snes, I had to get a super nintendo!
The console wars then got neutralised for me as I enjoyed and loved the best of both worlds and both sides!
    All awesome times 👍

I’ll tell you what I hate. I hate it when I see actors playing a game in a movie, yet they aren’t really playing it. “The 40 Year Old Virgin” is a big violator of this in the “you know how I know you’re gay?” scene. Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen are supposedly playing “Mortal Kombat Armageddon,” yet, you can tell by the way they are mashing their controllers, there is no way either of them are really playing it.
Another thing is when movies have a game in a scene and the music or sound effects don’t actually match the game they are playing. “Fear” has a horrible scene with Reese Witherspoon and her step-brother playing Super Street Fighter II together, yet it has generic bleeps and bloops rather than the game’s actual sounds. Also, when Reese puts the controller down and goes to talk to Alyssa Milano, her fighter keeps playing without her, against her step-brother. So, she wasn’t really playing the game in the scene either.
Is my hatred real or fake? I think it’s pretty real. I feel like it’s insulting to gamers and the games themselves.

For example, the first console I got new was a Genesis. I had Atari 2600 before that happened, and I got an NES with a ton of games shortly into my Gen time. Then I went PS1, well several PS1s, many of them actually because aftermarket turbo controllers apparently fry the controller boards on those. After that era it was a bit more free form as far as what consoles I owned, but my point stands, I never had a Master System, an SNES or N64/Saturn when they were relevant/fresh.

A couple years back Microsoft released a "remaster" which butchered so much of what made the game special. Unfortunately, too many folks will take what they're given without complaint, which just hurts the quality of our games and hobby over time.

The most ‘fake hate’ I’ve felt towards an online opponent was in Metroid prime hunters. There were so many people hacking the game and they were impossible to beat since they were literally cheating and it drove me crazy cause they were the majority of my opponents to the point where it was hard to find any non-cheating ones. They did stuff like clip through and hide inside walls, have infinite health, standing death alt, you name it, they did it and I got so annoyed to the point where I changed my username to something that directly insulted one of my opponents that I ran into too many times and had enough of them. Their name was a bunch of numbers which I can’t remember but I took the first couple of digits then added an equal sign = followed by a highly offensive insult to it and the next match they changed their name to insult me back. I laughed cause I knew I managed to get under their skin the same way they got under mine by hacking the game and ruining the entire online experience for all Metroid prime hunters fans. In hindsight it was stupid and immature but I did what I had to.

There are certainly things I hate within gaming, games like Assassin's Creed that put all their coolest clothing loot behind a paywall rather than allow you to find it in the game.
Players being angry when a game that was once exclusive goes over to another console or pc, which is something I personally celebrate as it just means more people get to experience it and its better for game preservation in the future.
However the modding scene is one thing I love about gaming. Its creative and it can also make some games more accessible.
Game Pass is another thing I really love about gaming. For games I'm not worried about owning, I can plop down 10$ to play as much as I want for that game and a ton more games, finish the games I want and move on.

While I don't specifically hate a game directly (that's silly), I do hate certain game design decisions. It mostly has to do with modern games as they're given the benefit of hindsight, but sometimes it just baffles me who thought it was a good idea for certain designs. My best example is open world racing in an online mode, it just adds time in between races & going to your garage to modify your car. In Single player I can understand it to help immerse, but multiplayer is all about playing with people... I'm looking at you Need For Speed.
As for hating games in general I've started to hate that people who didn't grow up playing traditional games (doesn't matter when, but that they play traditionally monotized games) get taken advantage of by free to play games & miss out on so many other amazing games I know they'd love, if only they'd give them a chance. It also incentives focus on cosmetics vs gameplay innovation & reduces developer & publisher incentive to try new things or create new properties. It's less a burning hatred & more a sad disappointment though.

I'm that Super Nintendo kid that, now, as an adult has a ton of fun exploring the Mega Drive/Genesis library. Been really getting into Gain Ground recently, for example. Amazingly, there are people that still live the 16-bit console wars and who're still on their fanboy bs, though.

i love your theory about why passionate gamers hate on other gamers. i really relate to that. But in an effort to put some hate on the page, here are top 5 gaming things i hate: 1) Playing games via the RF adapter, 2) The Dreamcast Controller, 3) DS action games that use the stylus, 4) Wii action games that use motion, 5) The fact that the PS4 Pro doesn't play 4k Blu-rays.
P.S. Every time i see you shine gameplay of Castlevania on the SNES i am reminded that i still don't own Super Castlevania IV. damnit.
    P.P.S. Let's be friends.

I tend to avoid/tune out most of the hate. So it’s all love in my little gaming microcosm ❤
Did you intentionally choose to showcase some notoriously divisive games in this episode? Because I have pretty strong feelings towards most of them 😂 I won’t get into those opinions, but I will say that one of those games I’ve actually learned to love over time after some bad first impressions.
Ok, it’s Dracula X! If you don’t directly compare it to Rondo of Blood and take it as it’s own unique entity, it’s actually pretty darn good! Sure there are some questionable enemy placements, a couple of lackluster backgrounds here and there and a final boss that can make you want to pull your hair out (until you figure out the trick to beating him), but there’s still a great game under all those flaws that I was too fixated on at first. I recently bought a repro copy (how’d you afford a legit one RB!?) and had a great time playing it. An instance of transcending hate into love.
Still hate Smash Bros tho 😂

Yes, I did intentionally choose some divisive games. As for Dracula X, I got my cart a long time ago. I'd suggest the Japanese cart these days. For the final boss, the trick is to stay almost all the way over to the right for basically the entire fight. Makes it way way more doable.

Quentin Tarantino once said, "Never hate a movie." I think that can be applied to most games. Even bad games have some sort of value (that's why I still own the first TMNT game for NES). The one exception I would make is for predatory monetization/mirco transactions. Sorry... that is my hate burden to bear.

So, now that the "Team Hate vs Team Love" war is over, I am stepping back into the normal mode 😂.
Still fascinated how much of the comments flow in your vids and this. Shows a real interest of yours, what people write. It also makes me sad, to hear that you get some hate in the comments, but I think these ones are just trolls and how you already said, I think, too, that their hate is just a compensation that they might have a problem with them self.
And to everyone else here: I really appreciate your participation in these talks, maybe there's gonna following a podcast with bird and some of us chatting about these topics as a group "the philosophical videogames talk roundtable" your podcast channel, for the real important questions. Sorry, that just came up my mind, but if someone plans something like that sign me up to be a participant for this 😁👍.
Just a few cents on the console war, my remembrance back then, when it has been Nintendo vs. Sega, at least for me, it felt more than a funny thing. I loved Segas advertisements like the "we can do what Nintendo'".
Nowadays people take this war especially between Sony and Microsoft very serious and that's sad. In the end we are all gamers. No matter where come from or where we play on. So let's take the things that unite us.

I used to "hate" on sealed game collecting then I rationalized my way into acceptance. No one shuns Pokemon collectors for not playing the TCG, or Lego collectors for not replaying with sets, or RC collectors for not using every one. I'm just happy they also are enjoying the hobby in their way.

I enjoy looking at the interesting questions like games for someone's kid (I learn more about a console library like I already do from time to time), or someone got a retro console or something when browsing different community talking platforms and it's clear what's interesting, what's so generic and boring to not even bother and a balance of niche and mainstream, care for hardware and software not just software. While Nintendo has fine games that are the last place for modern I have left besides retro of all those companies that tried and the big 3, Sony made me quit their brand and Microsoft hasn't made me interested since before Kinetic or if the Xbox One then ReCore but still. Their attempts have been boring and it will collect dust everything above 360 and 360 and before will be in my eyes as exciting.
When revolution claims are made for modern games I just sigh. I look up first and I look up new advancements in gaming. When I see trending games get praised I think some things are overblown but I respect certain parts still. For retro games I'm not into the obvious games and more niche ones as I think their experimental/not continued ideas are more compelling personally. Seeing why they didn't, why the games that were were just marketed and appealed more, weren't as generic to sell because their too crazy then grounded enough being a fair factor but also led us to more generic games over time as well even if the western always wanted to push for realistic graphics and appeal due to how the west sees things while Japan focuses on niches in many games video games or hobbies/businesses and it's to see
So seeing the successful games if they do have personality, are wide spread as a gateway character or something is something I consider besides just being big, having lazy dialogue or not. The things TV shows in the west have put me off with references or 'let these teens go to social media for this purpose insert popular social media name here' and I'm just cringing at times while with Japan it's not put in and otherwise if they can't even have a real name of McDonalds and would need a license it's clear why I guess so they have fakes and people still know what it is. We get it exists we don't need it pushed so hard.
I think all fans are fine to have their niche, good or bad games talked about as long as some respect is there. I do go a bit overboard sometimes in different places but if I've seen it to death I can't help but want to get away from it in favour of something else of course because it's too much of it and I gain nothing from seeing it everywhere after a while.

I have a bias for RPG games. I think mine would be:
    5. Xbox 360 (people forget how great it was during the first half of its lifespan)
    4. SNES
    3. PSX
    2. PS2
    1. Switch (yes, really)
Honorable mentions to: Mega Drive, Xbox, GameCube, PS3.
