As a Vietnamese Canadian who grew up in Saigon for 10 years, I truly appreciate this documentary. It shows how traditional Vietnamese women are. Truly heartwarming, truly beautiful. I love Saigon so much.
I enjoyed very much this show because I am Vietnamese American who is also moving my family to Chiang Mai next year. Many parts of the story I can relate to as I was a refugee who left Vietnam 2 days before the fall of Saigon. Grew up in the US and now working as a diplomat, I am one of the lucky one, but many never made it out or died trying in the vast ocean. Will visit the next time I’m in Bangkok. That was great. I speak French and I was in Vietnam in 68 and 69 just N.W. of Saigon . I was always impressed by the Vietnamese...their culture, their food and the fact that even the poorest had class that we find often missing in the West.
As an American having lived in both Vietnam and Thailand for 12 years, I found this very entertaining. My wife is an excellent Vietnamese chef. We eat well. Bravo documentary!
As a Vietnamese who lives in Southern Vietnam and loves Thailand dishes and the land, this hits a different kind of feel. Nevertheless what happens in the past, it's lovely to see you guys doing such an awesome job recording history, through food.
I had the pleasure of eating there in 2002 while I was living here n soi 23. I was brought there by a Vietnamese American friend and was amazed at how different the food was vs what I had eaten in Vietnam just months before. It was a such a different level and refinement. My friend knew the owner so we briefly met and I learned a small part of her story. She was a strikingly elegant woman, vital and seamlessly switching between languages. Thank you for finding the rest of her story!
Brilliant, simply, brilliant. Loved meeting this special family, and I will visit their restaurant during my next visit. Thank you for your beautiful poetic work. I will find myself watching it again, I'm sure.

I got a glimpse into the Vietnamese culture that I was never exposed to. Like many Americans I never even knew anyone Vietnamese until the refugees started showing up in the seventies. This was precious. I loved this bit of insight.
Grandma did right by her daughter by not being interested in the emperor of Vietnam. Because Nam Phuong, the girl who married the emperor, had quite bad marriage and pretty sad life 😢.
I’ve read a story that at the end of her life, she had a handsome butler always close to her (who’s rumored to be her lover). She also smiled way more after leaving Bảo Đại. When the butler died, he requested to be buried next to her.
It's the other videos that really make me love this channel. My favourite still, has to be the hockey story; like who would have expected that in Thailand?!? Keep the amazing work ❤

A great story and a great docu. The story is so familiar with many such stories of family, culture and value surviving against the odds and turmoils of war & upheavals. A story that is universal and has similarity in China, Korea etc
A different kind of video this time around. As an Indonesian I don't really know much about the history of mainland Southeast Asia, how intertwined the countries in Indochina are when it comes to that particular time in their shared history. Educational episode FTW 👍

Thank you for this documentary, veryvery interesting. I am a French person who lived in Bangkok in the 70’s at that time there was a French restaurant named Chez Madame Suzanne, very famous, The owner was a French woman who had lived in Saigon with the French army. Very strange to me.

I love how all I have to do is throw a jacket on top of the same stuff I always wear and people go nuts, like "wow, you're dressed so nicely!"...it's like Clark Kent with a pair of glasses somehow fooling everyone
Quel conte de fe'e! What a fairy tale, no this is not sarcasm: it's wonderful to hear a story of Vietnamese (actually I think they are truly "Indochinese") expats that did not suffer as war collateral damages (besides losing their homes in VN.) I think the turning point is 1954 when the family returned to Saigon, made a quick assessment and decided that no, this is not the place to settle down, and sailed on (when I saw the brief glimpse of Ho chi Minh flashed on screen, my heart skipped a beat, "Oh no, please no...") My hat off to Mr. Dauplay the father for his sharp foresight, which steered his family to safe harbor (Marseille and beyond...) Side note: I got a chuckle out of "Dallas" pronounced the Thai way as "Dalat" (at first I thought they named the restaurant after a short-lived automobile that was produced in VN before 1975 named "La Dalat." Dalat is the name of a city so it's fair game to think of it as "le" - masculin / or "la" -feminin.)
Fantastic documentary. Who would ever guess such a crap TV show as Dallas was something everyone in Thailand was following? so liked, that it inspred the name of their restaurant. I would have thought it had a much finer, French, origin. Now I want to know more about DuPuy and all of that history, and I want to try eating at Dalat the next time I am in BK. I found your channel last night, somehow, the one on the history of fried chicken, that was great and that lead to this one, now I am subscribed. I have a Thai wife and kids in Issan, Ubon. Been going to Thailand every year for the last 15 years, as I still work in the US. I love it there so much. Looking forward to watching all your videos now.
Really riveting story telling and such interesting characters. Really enjoyed the history of le Dalat will have to go back and check out the restaurant it's been a while
Your telling of this family's story and their restaurant is wonderful. I would like to Thank You for sharing this with us. One day I hope to visit their restaurant and would enjoy meeting such a wonderful family and seeing their setting in person.
What charming people. I wonder if they can speak Vietnamese. They speak English with a French accent. So much history from my homeland. Thank you for making this and I would love to go the restaurant when I'm in Bangkok but more so to meet the owners and their stories.
Probably, as they said that their half-French father spoke 6 languages including Vietnamese. & you can tell from the few words they spoke (place & food names) that they have a sturdy grasp on Vietnamese tones & phonology. Their English is more like a cultivated Mid-Atlantic accent, only when they say certain words like "France" & "restaurant" do they actually use the French pronunciation. LOL. & "risqué."
They don’t speak with a French accent, they speak with a Vietnamese accent that has a French twang. It’s obvious to me at least that Vietnamese is their first language and French is a close near-native second language (basically actual French people don’t sound like this when they speak English)
I agree with you about this. When a child(Vietnamese) went to French school and later settled in the United States speaks English like these two ladies. I myself included.
No list of pins this week, just one restaurant: goo.gl/maps/jsjVHazr7mrczwE57

A beautiful story told by lovely ladies, and with a great cliffhanger …
ps. Did i just catch a glimpse of you in a suit 🤔

Dauplay the father for his sharp foresight, which steered his family to safe harbor (Marseille and beyond...)
Side note: I got a chuckle out of "Dallas" pronounced the Thai way as "Dalat" (at first I thought they named the restaurant after a short-lived automobile that was produced in VN before 1975 named "La Dalat." Dalat is the name of a city so it's fair game to think of it as "le" - masculin / or "la" -feminin.)
Beautiful documentary. What a great story you presented. Looking forward for more like these!
The level of this is off the charts - all around, so good.
How fabulous! If i ever manage to visit Thailand again it'll be top of my list.
Wonderful.
Cheers and thanks for the nice comment! And yes, the Dallas story was the last thing I expected to hear
What a delightful story. Thanks!

Such a lovely episode.
OMG!!! This is fantastic video !! I will come to Thailand and meet these lady
LOL. & "risqué."
The 2 daughters of Susanne speak good Vietnamese with a Southern accent. They also speak English, Thai, and of course French.
