This is exactly what I got taught and what I teach to my students. There are no secrets in Karate. But pearls of wisdom like this cannot often be distinguished by the masses.
You are the only teacher that explains bone alignment and 1-2 timing. Excellent instruction. I read your book and I understand the point you're trying to explain. Your art is very similar to what I train in now. thank you
He is the only teacher that you know of who teaches this. There are way too many black belt mills. Thats true. But he is not alone in offering correct instruction. There are a few, at least, in Japan that do. At least several in Okinawa. And in our own association there is at the very least me. "When the students ready the teacher appears." Good luck. Indeed, Nodan's story is a challenge to many people's pre-conceived notions of reality but, just as with the occult manifestations that happened in the Amityville story, Nodan's experiences were well documented and were observed by a number of different persons.
I love these videos! Please make more! You are showing the true essence of karate, Showing that all power is generated from the Hara and our internal energy(Ki) is the key to true knowledge in this art. I like the message you shared in your book in not pursuing to be the best because that might lead into a whole other realm of different negative energy. Much respect. OSU
@acrocanthosaurus4 Nodan was a mixed martial artist, having studied a variety of Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese striking and throwing arts. In "The five Principles," he is demonstrating a "one strike" technique that appears to have been developed with makiwara training by 19th century Okinawan Shuri-te masters.
Hips move first, arm moves second This is a principle of the arts I study called "leading with the dan tien" and is very effective at projecting the entire body's energy through the point of attack.
I don't know this teacher. But many excellent teachers are unknown. Those that pursue "the Way" through the practice of Kara Te. The gentlemans explaination and demonstration are precise and exacting. Notice in his board breaks that there are no spacers between them. As you will find from men with lesser skill. You should be grateful that this teacher has shared his time and knowledge with you. But your ego does not allow you to see past the sound of his voice. The loss, and the shame, are yours alone. Thank you for sharing Sensei. May your Zen bring you to Satori. Overcome the darkness. Return the Light. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association.
Nodan trained in 5 striking arts, including Okinawan, Chinese, and Japanese systems. The Five Principles do not belong to any one style, but are foundational to all the striking arts.

Your videos are truly amazing Nodan it explains what I have been practicing for a long time. I should show people how this power is achieved like you do so it can be understood.
great karate vid,, no one talks about the hard and the soft, the timing, the breath the power generation,,this is gold he is giving you hear,, that back hand boart brake from inches away was a high level strike,
One major rule in one versus many and for some reason you have to fight, keep moving, stay random in your strikes so that they cannot organize and coordinate and as the master says, a strike with stopping power will whittle away the group quickly, thank you again sensei for sharing the wisdom one does not find in an american karate course.
The "nodan" character is a parody- a comic disguise that satirizes the karateka's misguided quest for enlightenment through his martial art. Anonymity was necessary to protect the privacy of those people connected with his story. Read his book and you will understand.
How much bruising and discomfort, and bruising should be tolerated when using the Makiwara? I accept the it will be part of the process. I just don't want to be reckless. Alignment is not an issue, at this time ... as all bruising is exactly on the two appropriate knuckles especially on the left hand (I am right handed). Many Thanks, in advance.
Wow! Just wow. Karate in its true form is a pleasure to behold. It's nice that someone is out there showing the average person what it's all about. It's all body physics.
I can't get enough of these awesome martial arts !Now me and my friend need no more abs at the gym.We watch this and both have awesome abs.Thank you sensei!
In the martial arts, Ki (energy) goes where your mind takes it. Whether in a throw or a strike, mental follow through ( ki extension) is critical for effective technique. But, you must study this well.
That is a good question. From what I have read, in many of disciplines of Chinese kenpo, a student is not taught actual martial arts until after 5 years of physical training and conditioning. So perhaps it would be good to develop a strong and athletic body with an extra focus on explosive strength. Heavy weights and power as well as isometrics. Have a lean diet so you do not become bulky.
Fascinating I'd love to train with you one day sir your style is legit thanks for the knowledge given in your video tutorials much respect to you sir from a humble martial artist!
Thank you to sir you are a inspiration to true martial arts which seems to be getting rare these days I wish I could train under someone with as much knowledge as you I wish you good health nodan.
Dear Jay, or Nodan.... Thanks for the video (and also for the book). Since some months ago, I am applying the techniques during my training and my giyaku zuki is becoming better centered and focused. This video teaches what any dojo must show to the students. Thanks a lot !!!!!
These principles aside, what are good exercises to build the foundation for mastery? Is there any special workout that I can do which prepares me for martial arts? Aside from pushups, situps, running, and their common variants.
See Nodan's video, "Building a Makiwara and Board Holder" for instructions on making a well-padded, flexible makiwara post which will protect the hands. Also, use common sense when starting out- do only a few reps with each side in the beginning and then build up. Remember, sore knuckles are nature's way of telling you to slow down and heal. See Nodan's new book, "The Five Principles" on line. He has a section on the makiwara that may be helpful. Peace.
You have missed the point of The Five Principles. It is demonstrating a "striking technique" that can be applied to any striking art. It is NOT trying to teach self defense or fighting strategies. The breaking demos are to show the power in the striking technique- how a martial artist applies this striking technique will vary, depending on his style and the circumstances in which it is applied.

If English is not your first language, some of Nodan's ideas can be misunderstood. He does not say that ki (energy) or Zen meditation are "demonic." He says they can be directed for good or bad, depending on the motives and intentions of the user. As far as his S-D demos are concerned, these are "hypothetical" situations used to show the power in the "one strike" techniques. Demonstrations are pre-arranged, and are not intended to show "reality" fighting so, you must think out side the box.

That seems like it would be true if that was how it was intended. All of the above is happening in split second, that moment when the opponent is exposed is always quick and one conditions like this for hours if necessary to ensure that everything is perfect to maximise the effect of your strike.
@martinkyochukov You seem to have a different idea of what qualifies as 'wrestling." Perhaps you mean a style of combat jujitsu?
