Every time our forearms clashed, I felt like I had hit a steel post, full force. My arms went numb several times and I got irritated. I swallowed my pride at the end and struck up conversation with him. He had been an Uechi-Ryu karateka for over 15 years. Incase anyone is confused, he was hardening his bones, all those punching and kicking of the hanging bamboo (idk name), makes the bone density scientifically harder, it's called 'Partial Training', idk how but it just makes the bone harder and alot tougher when you do that, I think the body adapts to the damage that's being done to the bones.
First, the hanging bamboo is called a makiwari. Second, the bones are hardened by micro-fractures caused by striking or load bearing on a person's bones being filled in and repaired by osteoblasts, a process called Wolff's Law. It's pretty fascinating.

Increase bone density by inflicting micro fractures, but its easiest arthritis you could ask for, if you're no pro fighter trying to become world champion of whatever, its not necessary and will give you lots of pain down the road, speaking from experience, started that training at my 18 years old and at my 30s have some issues with my hand. Also my master had hard as rock knuckles but also suffers from arthritis like symptoms.

Uechi Ryu is stated to be the first style to introduce “sparring”. Originally, it was called jiyu kobo. Skilled practitioners were able to use eye pokes and all shorts of techniques that would be illegal even in MMA in their Uechi Ryu sparring.
Please correct me if I'm wrong but as I take it, the shinobi were also villagers/farmers and would sometimes be hired to do a certain contract/assasination. Am I right in thinking this or is it a commonly held belief?
I didn't see him doing finger strikes, I did however see him doing something similar to the leopard punch. True iron claw masters do train to actually stab their fingers into flesh though.
For the peeps that don't understand... this training causes micro fractures in the bone, which re heals constantly over again through time and makes the bone density thicker in the hands. It's similar to training muscles and causing micro tears in the muscle fibers which reheal and cause the muscles to be stronger.

Makiwara training is not about building rough hands, it is about strengthening the kamae from the ground out to the hand and back again. It has less to do with the hand and more to do with what is supporting it. Yes, it does toughen the hands, but there are plenty of examples of people having very supple hands even after decades of proper makiwara practice.
The good news is you can train anywhere! Just start by whacking your knuckles into the TV cabinet until they are all broken and bloody then start kicking the corner of the wall with your bare foot until you can't walk. Then crawl around a bit I guess 😝
I watched the part whem the old man kick the bamboo pile like it was light. Let me tell you. Bamboos are not light. I know because i have a lot of them. Sure it look like its light because of the way ot is hanged but kick that repeatedly? Thats gotta hurt a lot. You guys can reply whatever you want. Its just my opinion though.
do can mean the way or the way to enlightenment, usually martial arts with 'do' are very heavy in philosophy/some sort of idealism - as a way of living instead of just a style of fighting :) e.g. kendo vs kenjutsu (being the previous martial art for more realistic fighting for samurai)
I did some research: As it seems shinobi were increasingly recruited from the sohei fighting-monks starting with the insei-system, explaining why there is such a strong buddhist influence in ninjutsu. This sounds plausible as there was no affiliation with the secular clans. The sohei clans were similar to the european military orders like the templars and other. Nonetheless most samurai family stiles included those practices that would have been dishonouring from a follower of the hagakure.
@elu296 I have two things to say to this. One is that hand conditioning should be added to TKD training. And the other if that you should never punch someone in the forehead. I don't know of any martial art that teaches students to punch the forehead.
A lot of styles call for "active defense", meaning you are not just throwing up a limb as a barrier, but using that limb to seek out and "attack the attack". You have to remember the roots of Okinawan Karate styles: it was developed to allow poor farmers to fight armed and armored Samurai and bandits. The armor of a foe not only makes him resistant to fists, but it also gives him more heft, so if you just block blows, you might be thrown off balance.
He says do under qualified supervision I know a lot of us don't have that so make sure you hit the surface area of your bones without whacking your joints and beating down the carilidge we want to be blocking blunt weapons with our limbs when when we are his age not injecting cortisone into them
This type of training has been scientifically proven to increase bone density. Its takes a long time but its incredible how the body adapts.
