  • A moderately short tutorial of how to setup and use a Kenwood TH-D74A with Icoms Android app RS-MS1A, which is designed for their 4100,5100, and 51 series devices. It annoyed me at first but keep in mind it wasn't designed for this, we are the testers, the tinkerers, and in some cases the elmers.

That was an excellent video - The D74 is amazing I also have a Icom 51plus 2 with the 2350 cable - the tip about data mode is essential, I also have the Icom ID-52 which does work in bluetooth mode with the app - Thanks

Thank you for sharing how you got RS MS1A woking on the D74. I noticed you were using the B Band of the D74. How did you select the DV/DR mode for the B band? I am running D-Star on the A Band and APRS on the B Band. I do not know if this makes a difference but I thought I would as since the Bluetooth connection failed.

This is the most useful D-STAR video I have seen on youtube so far. Amazing job. Thank you!

I came across this video some years later. Unfortunately when I open the Icom software and tap on the TH-D74 in the paired device list, I now get "Bluetooth connection failed." I guess at some point in the past four years either Icom or Kenwood (or both) decided they didn't like the idea of interoperability. :-/

If it's true, that's too bad. But the D74 did have to have a lot of settings corrected to make this happen. I should have made a video about those settings, but sadly I no longer have my D74. I am looking forward to icons ID52 that is due later this year, with BT built in, no more mucking about with cables.

I wonder, it is any chance to work when using two D74?

Slightly off topic, is that a Nexus 5 you are using to BT to the D74?

At the time, yes. The method works with most Android phones, I've tested over 30 models.

This video convinced me to pickup a Droid phone to use for this, amongst other things my iPhone does not offer. Ha! I need dual boot mobile OS. Until then, two devices.

Excellent info! Thanks much for making this, I am going to try it with a D74. Are there specific dstar reflectors where this is going on? All of the reflectors I listen to are all voice contacts. 73's, Mike AB7RU

In all my time of operating I have not found a single message only reflector. And a big problem contributing to this is the lack of support from hotspot vendors. A large percentage of the user base uses hotspots to connect to the grid instead of going direct to repeater with a date gateway. I cannot get the messaging to function through any hotspot I've tried, but I have no problem with simplex, duplex, repeater, or gateway reflector via repeater. I hope that makes sense and doesn't keep you from experimenting.

So on my TH-D74 this works once then everytime after the display dims and the radio resets.. I thought it was my radio, but borrowed my wifes radio and hers does the same.. Could be a firmware bug I guess introduced, both radios are running V1.06..
Out of interest I tried the USB with D-Rats and the same issue works once then the radio display dims then it reboots.. Very very odd...
I will contact Kenwood next week and see if they have any ideas.. for the moment at least not DStar data fro me :-(

I'm still running 1.05 and have not encountered any errors. I have tested with D-Rats but can't find any good reflectors to do some positive testing. I hope that Kenwood can help with your issue! Let us know! 73

I also noticed it only works with DV mode. Not DR mode, unless I'm doing it wrong.

Yep, I get into that about 6 minutes into the video, also I talk about the lack of auto-switching. The Kenwood is awesome, just lacks a few features that I honestly can work without.

Brian Moses I'm am totally sold on my TH-D74A. Best HT I've ever owned. No radio is perfect. Now to get Kenwood to release a mobile version.

Are you able to use a text messaging function with just the radio itself or do you have to use an external device?

David Samuel Peckinpah I can do APRS messaging with the Kenwood without using attached device, however for dstar messaging, the app is required.
