- APRS is a very useful aspect of the amateur radio hobby. If you haven't heard of APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) then check out this video, to see what you can do with it. There are other aspects of APRS i did not show, but the point is made. If you ARE familiar with APRS, give it a watch and let me know how i did. Here are the links mentioned in the video..

Being a Police Officer, I can see APRS being integrated into body cameras and sync'ing with our radio system to provide real-time information to Dispatch. Small GPS receiver integrated into the Officers badge and a small belt mounted transceiver. I said about 15 years ago that all Officers would eventually have body cameras and it's about true. My next prediction... This technology integrated into our handhelds, vehicles, and drones for more accountability and safety.
I am kindda surprised that law enforcement agencies are not using a phone app for that purpose already, but I have long agreed that APRS technology was well suited to public safety services. It is a shame the major manufactures have not incorporated some form of it into the HTs other than a couple ham radios.
I believe the newer Motorola APX radios have this kind of feature but most agencies can’t afford $10k per radio
Thanks very much, I was away from the hobby awhile and I can't believe how far behind I got! Thanks- 73 N6CH
Thanks for the video bro, can't imagine how advancement in amateur since the 90s,still and still ham radio is the best and excitement even in the age of internet
Great video. You can really tell that you enjoy this stuff because you were excite to talk about this the whole video. I went with the pre-built Tiny Trak4 and I have it hooked up to a Yaesu 7900 in the car. I am still using it just for tracking. But seeing these videos makes me want to look at messaging to.
Actually found this video more helpful than one by a different individual.
Great video, lots of fun for everyone even Technicians. I'm not new to APRS but I did not know I could send email from my FT1D. I agree with your APRS is not dead
man this got me interested... i will study and try it after... this is nit appreciated in my qth but man this is what we need...hope i can hear more from this especially tutorials for beginners...tnx 73s
Very good and information crammed video. I have been using APRS for years and learned new things. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort.
Thanks for your time to share this info. I was hoping for an actual tutorial and not an explanation but still learned a lot. This video was very helpful. Thank you.
I think this is really interesting. I've used SMSGTE on APRSDroid previously, but never with DMR. My DMR HT (CS-700) only works in lower-case from the keypad, but I could store upper-case SSIDs in the Quick Text memory.
This is a great video! Thanks for posting, your explanations really help me want to get going with Ham and APRS, I just got my Tech. license today and am excited to get a radio and start using it!
SnowroxKT well congrats on the ticket. thank you for the support. 73
Thanks, good info, Thgis is all new to me after being off the air for 30 years.
I always come back to your videos. I'm trying to get aprsdroid to work offline right now using a tri hand mic with their replica PRC 152.
I have Harris Falcon .. easy . PM me I can walk you thru it. Same unit only not CCR ( cheap Chinese replica ) .. sorry to bug you , maybe you figured it out now.. KE0NAZ ..
Thank you very much. That was a very comprehensive presentation on the APRS system. Can you tell me how long the RF burst is in duration when the radio reports your geographic position. Secondly, what is the maximum character length permitted when sending a text message.
Thanks.
When emailing or sending SMS to another person do they have to be HAM operators or can they just respond with phone or email client?
One of the best explanations on YT, tx 4 sharing, 73 KK6BIB
do I need to be a ham? My children and I can use this for our trail running at times 2, 3, miles apart.
hey can you do a quick video on sending an email from aprs to computer .... i am trying to learn thank you.
thanks, this is inspiring me to try this with sms gateway.
Excellent information provided as always
I said patiently through the whole thing and I must have missed where you said you were going to show radio to radio contact using APRS What a croc
Great video!!! You would make a great teacher...Ive been in Ham radio since 1979 and still learning.
I have a ftm1d HT, what are the comm port settings on the radio that needs to be set for aprsdroid to work.? also are the settings in aprsdroid that needs to be set for the phone to talk to the radio...Sorry for the trouble, I've been trying to get it work but ran into a dead. BTW, your videos are very informative...Kc3eca 7'3s
Cedric Baylor u can use aprs directly on that radio there is a separate manual for APRS for that radio to show setup
Eric, another info packed video, thanks!
I'm wondering, apart from the fun of putting it together, what you get with an RF link into the APRS network vs internet linking ?
Internet requires 3rd party service to provide data carring, which in long range wireless (mobile nwtworks, WiMax,Sat)is not free and depended on that service, where APRS is as accessable as HAM radio and its complitly decentralized, no need of any service... you are service itself. On other hand internet is more reliable.
Hi Eric, came across this Video accidentally, however very interesting, lots of good info, 73s Eric. AE1TP
i want to use a raspberry pi with no radio and send and rec messages, how can i do that? also i have a callsign so its all good, i just not got an expensive radio.
you need to connect to an ARPS-IS (teir 2) server and interact with aprs that way. there are a few python examples and libraries on how to do just that is you do a simple google search for it.
Can you send data by Bluetooth from your Yaesu to your table?
I'd love to decode APRS packets using an RTL-SDR / AFSK1200 (ala s55ma and QSO365's guide on setting up APRS on a Pi).
However, I get that the APRS frequency in the U.S. is 144.39 MHz (Europe its 144.80Mhz, Australia 145.175 MHz), but what's the bandwidth, and what type of modulation does the radio use to transmit an SMS/Email to the repeater?
And where does the APRS-IS get translated from RF to SMS/Email/etc... and similarly from SMS/Email to RF? I assume there are Internet Gateways connected to radios somewhere, but who runs them? i.e. can anyone run a server like SMSGTE / APRSISCE/32?
BTW, is the idea that you can bt pair the $120 Mobilinkd TNC3 to your android (aprsdroid) , connect tit to your radio.. and then you can see APRS traffic on the phone/tablet? Why not just go directly to aprs.fi? Or, if there's no internet, connect a laptop running UI-View32? What does the TNC3 add?
And the SainSonic 2015/AVRT6 doesn't pair to an android, but has GPS and can send RF, or digital data out directly via GSM 3G?
Does DMR radio with built in GPS have feature similar to this APRS or they have their own ?.
DMR uses it's own format and is only useful on a tier 2 linked system
what would it take to get this aprs video sent to me to use it as a demo to the deputy fire chief

Eric, Great info! thanks. John KK4SHF
APRS email still leaves a lot to be desired. Cannot reply (at 19:40), how lame! But the SMSGTE Gateway at 19:50 is interesting. You should make that a stand-alone video called SMSGTE Gateway. Get a lot more views.
However, still a bit skeptical regarding reliability of texting back and forth between radio and smartphone. What was your experience? You showed send, but you didn't show receive/reply.
Have a look at APRSLink, with WLNK-1 as your address for the messages, your can send AND recieve email via your winlink emailaccount. Pretty neat imho :)
EMAIL-2 also allows a reply by email. You can send SMS and email through a digipeater on the International Space Station as well.
Awesome job explaining aprs
Great video thanks for uploading.
Great video
actually if you use APRS Messenger ( ' droid ) it has the message capability. It links to TNC digi tracker ( Bluetooth ) and will message. We use for ARES net / Skywarn a lot . Plus the local collage put up a high ( 30 miles plus ) experimental balloon and had my club chase it down . ( " yo' brother - 370 meters 252' magnetic - google pic shows ravine - heads up dude " ) and they were able to reply ( " what ravine ? ... oh .. that one ) all by APRS. So messaging while not like " texting " as we know it does work back & forth . FYI .... 73s/KE0NAZ..
Thanks... I enjoyed the video!
Thank You
I've sent thousands texts on APRS and only received a " :-)" that's it. We have to take this form of communication siriusly . I can't think of a better way to send a brief message in an EMCOM situation than APRS.
Here , there is a northern California digital network using just about every mode once a week.. APRS is used to check into an HF net with relay's (text to a APRS station on VHF or APRSDROID (connected to data or rf) and that station checks you in (KE6SLS or I could ) . KE6SLS on monday nights, use APRS at 6, hf at 6:30 , and there is a digital net later also using different modes on HF. Oregon has one on Tuesday. More and more are using the APRS Messaging applications, especially using APRSDROID (because its easy) . Just set up a unique notification sound so you'll know you received something. I'm close to having a mobile running one of the windows apps, and using my Chuwi Tablet for that, and connected to an older Kantronics Plus and a 25 watt mobile. Important to me because there are so many places without cell coverage which have APRS coverage ! good luck.
RIP Bob
Do they sell mobile link on amazon?
No, www.mobilinkd.com/

Actual SMS diffusion starts at 20:00 😑
There is also a great replacement for APRS DROID, offering a different feature set. ldeffenb.dnsalias.net/APRSISMO/index.htm
Search APRSISMO on RUclips.
Ten minutes in and the guy is rambling about stuff that doesn't matter and not explaining stuff that does.

Why don't you make a video champ?
Well still during a disaster this type of system will not work. It depends on the Internet.
No, it isn't dependent on the internet in any way. You can see it on the internet if you want to, but it isn't dependent on the internet. And even if it was, just because there was a disaster doesn't automatically mean the internet doesn't work. Depends on the disaster and the location of the disaster. Again, not that it matters because this isn't dependent on the internet, but if the internet is down, that doesn't mean it is down 10 miles away from where you are. On the internet, you are seeing packets that were gated. You can see them off RF just as easily.
I can hit a digipeater 50-70 miles away pretty easily. Do that 3 times (digipeaters retransmit your packet multiple times) and I'm sure the packet will come across a Digi with igate (internet gateway) and make it to the internet even if the local internet/cell/phone system is down.
All fifteen of us are pulling out of your page you haven't shown to Kenwood all you show is I common Yaesu nothing Kenwood we're leaving you are bye bye-bye
As if it matters. Go find a Kenwood support group. 15! Are you serious?
