This was a nice episode in my opinion. I like how they integrated mech, jet, and bits of omashu episode into this. But you were definitely right about aang and waterbending. He went through the entire series and didnt learn anything. All he did was complain about being the avatar.
The freedom fighters was my favorite part of this episode. Like they’re casted so well and look exactly like the cartoon versions
Even though it was a bit rushed this episode has its good moments
I also found it very nice how they did add many different indian actors which i feel very represented in as an indian. Although many people may not like this, it is lore accurate as there are indian characters shown in the legend of korra comics. At the end of the day it is another group of asians represented in the show which is what this is about. Also makes sense since there are many parts of the atla universe that are taken from indian culture and language.
The king couldn't save the city from the fire benders, Saida was giving them information, I didn't expect Katara to compare her to fire benders.
One of the best episodes. So much that I wished it was longer. Zuko and Aang fighting in the maket was absolutely brilliant , all the pulling and tugging on the fancy fabrics as they donge one another. The choreography 10/10.
I really like this episode. I respect the producers for keeping so many characters of the anime here and melding the episodes. It was slightly rushed but that was all. Whether it is of the mechanist, Jet or Earth Kingdom's capture of Iroh. It was different but it wasn't done in a way that made me mad, but it felt like it fitted. I am soooo waiting for next ep review of yours as I have a lot to say about that
EDIT: Seems like I am one of the few who liked it, most disliked this episode. But I actually thought that it was clever the way they meld four different episodes in one and keeping the main plot beats
Review is coming soon
I agree with you on the beauty of Omashu. One change I like about this adaption is that it shows the crowd entering into Omashu, a bustling city, in the original, it was like just Aang's gamg plus another one or two persons, felt a bit empty, which didn't seem normal for a busy city.
I like how which city represents a certain demographic of the real world, from the previous episode which was Japanese, now Omashu is a mix of Middle Eastern and Indian vibe.
Nice thing to point out about how people enter in!
Im surprised how much I love Azulas casting and how much I liked her from her first scene. Ahh she’s so cool. And it’s yikes but I think they’re going to skip over the training entirely and aang might be a water bending master by the time season 2 starts, because there is a time jump and he has Katara who is a master now. But either way, I think the episode mashing makes enough sense. It shows contrast between the mechanist and jet. A bit rushed but it’s ok.
I don't think he'll be a master by the time season 2 starts but I do think he'll be inside of the process approaching when he can fully get it down
I thought it worked well the way they split the characters up to follow along with the different plot points. In the original the encounter with Jet had the most impact on Katara and the mechanist was the most impactful for Sokka’s character, whereas interacting with Teo was pretty impactful for Aang, so it works well imo. And then going right into the heart of enemy territory at even just a hint of the Avatar is a very Zuko thing to do, and of course uncle Iroh is going to be there right by his side and would give himself up in a heartbeat to protect his nephew when Zuko inevitably loses his (almost nonexistent) cool. Nice way to weave in Iroh’s capture. The fight with Zuko was a big strong point, I agree that it felt straight out of the original.
Katara’s ability to bend hit weird in this one, after Aang’s advice in the first episode and then Jet’s advice here, it felt like her progress with water bending improves much too quickly after just briefly talking it through with people.
I thought that Katara's progression was fine
I think the best part in Avatar the last airbender is the jet and the freedom fighters. I loved the engineer and his son. The fact that Jet tries to get rid of both the king and the number is a bit clever because it's the king's city.
This is where they’re changing the weaving of threads from the original series. But again trying to keep the important core elements intact.
I appreciate what they’re doing and hope they continue to grow.
This definitely felt a little rushed, because there’s so much they’re trying to incorporate.
Omashu is really packed episode. It combined so many different episodes from the cartoon. It was almost perfect, but they rushed a few things, especially katara's realization of jet, which could have been better
This episode was nice. It was rushed a bit for me. I did not like that our main characters barely interacted with each other. But everything else was well combined❤
I really liked the merging of freedom fighters and mechanist in this episode. I loved the characters starting to develop such as aang showing off his caring heart. Katara figuring out and getting over her fear of bending and sokka discovering his genius
I really liked teo as well
Oh I also loved the Jackie chan style fight between aang and zuko 😂😂😂
I hope he gets along with the jet avatar team in the second season and I hope he doesn't die, it would be a very sad moment.😢
I agree that it was rushed, with some scenes needing to be given a bit more time to breathe whilst scenes like topless Sokka in the previous episode could have been shortened or even cut all together and not be missed.
In terms of look, they nailed Ty Lee, but I'm hoping that we'll see her acrobatic side in the future, and I hope that they do justice to adapting that important part of her character. There's scope for them to include it later on but I was disappointed not to see her with the circus which I felt brought a fun aspect to her character.
Anything but that topless sokka scene bro ofc i wouldve missed that
I liked this. I just wish the tree fort was actually up in the trees.
Lol that would've been hard to film
@@uncleirohsteashop maybe. CG floor made to look higher up? Ewok village in Star Wars worked, but those were much bigger trees. I dunno I just liked the childhood wish fulfillment of a badass tree house. 😂
2:17 I agree it was really weird because Katara literally offers to practice with him. And the excuse he gives for not doing so i though was rather weak given that he knows as the Avatar he has to master all the bending disciplines.
What they did with this episode I personally think is genius. The adaptation of 3 different storylines that are very unrelated brought together to make sense and still keep the originals plot points. Very respectful to what the original was and bringing in to this version.
Fully agree with Azula and Mai. Azula especially is going to have a huge uphill battle in pulling her off, not just in terms of character but the voice and personality that Grey Delisle is one of the more iconic than almost any other character. Ty Lee is so well done though. Mai... I'm just not seeing it at all, though again a big part of Mai is very much down to the voice alongside the personality - the whole does not care tone.
Aang not touching waterbending at all this episode or any other is probably the only thing that comes close to me actually hating about this episode and the series as a whole. It makes no sense as to why he does not even attempt it, especially since he has helped Katara on her way to unlocking her potential with his teachings from the monks about balance and energy - seeing them learn together would have been great and puts the scenes in later episodes in a better position showing how much better Katara is getting.
All fair points that I can get onboard with
yea they really nailed it the omashu look is really great. And i still say that ty lee is pertectly casted can't wait to see her in action . i thought this episode was rushed TBH . In My opinion i kinda dislike how they are spliting the group i liked there bond in the original, anyway the best seen was zuko vs aang it was just great
The splitting of the group is something that was done sparingly in the original cartoon with some arcs but ya I hear you
Agreed the lack of water bending training with Aang was off (Book of Water, the point of it lol) A mild nit pick I had also was them not having a small scene of showing where they leave Appa and reason why, for low profile, but no, just flying to Omashu then next they’re trying to sneak in at the gate=\
I like how they consolidated Mechanist and Jet into Omashu, but not how they split everyone to solo deal with each story. Needed more team avatar together for bonding/banter as a group dealing with each story, just my feeling on this. Overall a good episode though =)
Ya the Appa and Momo stuff can simply be put up to budgetary reasons which really sucks
these vids gotta be longer brother !!! the people need more content lol
Lol I can only talk about so much before I drag something out TOO LONG
@@uncleirohsteashop haha i feel that! i’ll always support, love the channel
OK, personally I didn't really like episode 3 because I felt like they rushed a lot of things given that they crammed multiple plot lines at the same time😢
Agreed. I felt like Jet was shoehorned into this episode and it sucks because he was great
i guess it was rushed but the entire plot and idea felt quite nice. It was easy to follow in my opinion, and how they integrated episodes was alr. But the ending to this episode was the reason the next one was so bad and i wished they had changed the ending.
i do know what u mean tho
i very much agree with you
wait until you get to the trash episode 5 is xd
They mixed episodes from season 2 and 3 too
I really wonder what sh1t they are gonna come up with in the future to replace the content they took from there
Massive spn fan so seeing a fan favourite in the episode 3 intro was awesome. Shame he got un alived tho. Kevin tran from advanced placement lol.
What?
Aang not water being just once honestly it made me wanted to pulled out my hair. I’m gunna be the first to say it, but at least the movie had him trying. What I have noticed is that they are making Aang very wise in this. He’s giving advices to Katara a lot and just keeping her really motivated. He is wise in the animated series so this isn’t so far off. Omashu is absolutely visually stunning, the mechanist and Teo being here it didnt really bother me too much. The mechanist tells Sokka he can do so much more than being a warrior was touching. The actors playing Mei and Ty Lee I thought they did fine with what they were given. Jet and the freedom fighters remained me of the lost boys a little which there’s nothing wrong with that. The hand to hand combat between Zuko and Aang I actually really enjoyed that. Even the animated series wasn’t strictly on bending so this was well written. Overall, I’ll give this episode a 7.5/10 the visual was stunning but the acting wasn’t as strong.
Agree with all of this
this is my 2nd favorite episode.
Hey fair enough glad you had some liking to it!
Ep 3 was a step down imo and 4 as well. Jet should've had his own episode so it could've been closer to the original and not so rushed.
I could understand this although idk if I would've personally given Jet his own episode
Not my cabbages 🥬
I totally agree with the opinion that Mai and Azula's actors don't do a good enough job to bring their characters to life.
At least not yet anyway they could bring more in another season
@@uncleirohsteashop hopefully.
Instead of having Mai and Ty Lee stand around and watch Azuka train they could have had them train as well. Or at least show us glimpses of their skills. That was a missed mark
That's a bit of a nitpick given Mai is doing her thing with the knifes and it's not like they do this all the time in the cartoon
Aang not waterbending was just weird and kinda stupid in my opinion. They must have a good explanation for it, but for me it made no sense at all
0:01 Im not really a fan of this episode overall.. i dont like how the groups are split because they are supposed to grow close to each other and i don't really feel the chemistry between aang and katara( not in a couple way but as a friend).. As you said i wish aang would do the waterbending because it seems like he doesn't give a damn about learning other bending.. we already know that in the original he is a natural and we see him doing waterbending even in season 1....( I love how they bring back the cabbage merchant, he is the highlight of the show)
Forgot to mention the cabbage merchant will mention him in the next review but ya the splitting up of the group here probably hinders it a bit
Aang not having a single practice session the whole series was criminal. So unrealistic.
I wouldn't say its unrealistic since they dont know about the comet yet
Wouldn't say unrealistic but more a missed opportunity
@@uncleirohsteashop yeah the no practice thing just didnt seem real. The practice sessions really built the world and the magic system of bending beautifully. Def a missed oppertunity to retain the ogs charm.
I think their point is Katara becoming a warerbending master and training Aang.
@@shamalkanavod7059 ger not learning anything from paku was such a sad change. A critique of the og was katara getting so good so fast. I didnt have much of a problem with it. But her not learning from a real master was puzzling. Its so sad.
*SPOILERS*
Casting wise: Pipsqueek I didn't like, isn't he meant to be alot older than the other freedom fighters and also have that DEEP DEEP voice...
Biggest gripe with the story-line is Katara and Sokka save King Bumi ad there isn't even a scene of it being summed up. It just cuts back to Aang... I'd expect of scene of Jet and his gang end up in prison and Bumi throwing Katara and Sokka.... A FEAST! But this doesnt even happen in Ep4!
Oh and the freedom fighters base is about 4 feet off the floor, I'm sure that helped massively keep the fire nation away 🤣
The Azula scene was nice, did show how ruthless she is and the smirk on her face watching someone she betrayed burn alive is menacing.
I am pretty sure I've read online somewhere that Pipsqueek is like in his 20's
I cant believe they mashed so many earth nation episodes into one.
And they didnt even have the decency to give us the Iroh story beat.
What Iroh story beat?
Anyone else noticed, while entering Omashu Aang says that there's a great delivery system in Omashu. But after meeting Teo and Sai, Teo says his father (Sai) invented the delivery system. It doesnt add up right?
What doesn't add up?
i think he says sai manages it?
@@ImmeasurablePow what's wrong with Sai managing it?
My only problems with this episode were the casting of Azula, Mai and pipsqueak. Azula just isn't doing it for me, I have no doubt the actress is trying but she just isn't azula. Mai just doesnt look right to me for some reason and pipsqueak really doesnt look right. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but isn't pipsqueak supposed to be a huge adult man not a slightly bigger than average teen? I could be totally wrong though. Other than those two I liked this ep. Loved the mechanist and like you said jets hook blades were very cool.
You keep saying they don't look right multiple times but with no actual reason. Also can we be totally real here, Pipsqueak's build is insane. Also I've read online that Pipsqueak is around his 20's in age so the actor here looks somewhat close to that.
Fair. I did say that they didn't look right "to me". Reasons for me are Mai and azula should be taller and have more angular features. Mai doesn't have her sulky voice. Azula is acting like a scared girl, she isn't giving any menacing vibes at all. Now I get that come the end of book 3 in the OG we see her snap and it's revealed that she has all these emotional issues but this early on she shouldn't be showing it as she keeps it all hidden and is a psychopath. The actress is definitely trying but I just don't think she has the right voice and mannerisms but that could be due to directing. You even said it yourself that you want to see more from the actresses that play mai and azula in terms of their portrayal of those characters. I do agree about Ty Lee though she's great. Pipsqueak really isn't that big in this dude he just looks like a slightly podgy young guy. I just went and checked out the animated pipsqueak and he's huge and has that deep booming voice. These are my reasons for what I said and I'm sure people will disagree and some will agree but we can't all like the same thing. I still think that the show as a whole is a good time.
See I really liked Azula, the others didn't do enough to really judge, BUT my one criticism with the three of them is I think they seem TOO YOUNG which is kind of ironic considering their actual ages, but something about the hair/makeup/costumes etc. makes them simply appear younger than most of the other "kid" characters besides Aang. Does that make sense? Like does this Mai look old enough to date Zuko? not really. does this Ty lee look old enough to flirt with sokka? nope. and Azula, just looks too young to be realistically intimidating, even though she totally sells the performance. Please don't get me wrong either, I think the comments about them being too chubby for the roles are BS and totally inappropriate. it's 100% a costuming thing in my opinion.
@@ThompsonBrosStudios tbh maybe that's what it is I'm noticing with azula etc. They don't look menacing cause they look too young, yeh you could have a point there. I remember when I first saw azula and Mai in the OG show I thought they were like 18-20!
@ood115 honestly they are drawn looking too old in the cartoon than they are supposed to be. Lol. But yeah, I think that's it. also interesting to note the actresses are actually all between the ages of 17 and 21, but don't really look it here.
This is so funny, because I enjoyed 2 and 4 much more than episode 3. I had no issues with the characters themselves or the idea of trying to combine their plots, but it just comes across as very rushed and poorly executed to me. Not to mention it has the WORST shot in the show so far, that being Jet's freedom fighters camp. it looks straight out of a disney channel original movie, and honestly falls FAR short to literally everything else visually in the show. I'll gladly take the shirtless sokka scene over this scene of their poor attempt at a camp. It honestly felt SO jarring and out of place.
Lol I guess fair enough
I hope this is not offensive in anyway but the azula gan feels a bit weird as in looks. Mai need a more sleek slender body which adds to her emo vibe. Azula needed a more athletic body again being a bit more slim then what we got, and ty lee was quite good i guess. Maybe more of a short little sister kinda vibe idk? Is it just me or am i being weird.
I've already told other people that I don't see it. I've seen pictures of the actresses and they are not that chubby. The outfit Mai is wearing is 2 sizes too big on her.
First❤
By this episode I was starting to get a little bummed that plot points just didn't have any time to breathe or sink in. The Volume was extremely noticeable here and the FX team should have done a couple of more passes to blend some scenes better.
Ya this episode features that one very bad green screen shot of Iroh and Zuko
@@uncleirohsteashop To jump ahead, by Episode 5 this show starts holding it's own and becoming a heavyweight. I hope they get a second season and review the positives and negatives
@@paulanderson771 my episode 5 review comes in the morning
This episode holds one of the two changes I actually disliked, and this is the less forgivable of the two. I think they did Jet's character a great injustice, just based on the fact that they had his storyline set in Omashu. In the original, Jet is never shown wanting to harm anyone except the Fire Nation. Having him blowing things up in Omashu, putting Earth Kingdom citizens at risk, feels like such a huge departure for his character and frankly a betrayal of his values. I really hope he gets a proper redemption in season 2, which will have to be much stronger than the original to make up for.
Actually I think you might be wrong about this. I believe in the cartoon he did know there was a chance he'd hurt people who were with the fire nation in the village. Even then he still blows up an entire thing of which those people lived in. He's extremist in nature with his tactics.
@@uncleirohsteashopThe key phrase there being that it's a Fire Nation village in the original. He hates the Fire Nation and is therefore okay with that sacrifice. I don't think he would do the same when most of the victims would be from the Earth Kingdom. I'm not so much disagreeing that he wouldn't do it, as much as I'm arguing that he wouldn't do it specifically in Omashu.
@@rennakahara7851 fair enough I guess
just wait till you watch episode 6
I liked Ep 6 a lot
I liked how the carts were just going uphill. Shows netflix really studied the world and show...not. 🙄
Uhhhh you do know that in the very next episode we see Bumi and Aang riding one of the chutes downhill right?
@@uncleirohsteashop yeah downhill. In the la they were traveling uphill instead of being bended up vertical chutes. Im saying that wasnt very realistic or well studied. They would have needed benders all along the track to do that, but there was none. They were just going uphill and it made no sense.
@@codyhughes1147 no offense but this is a major nitpick we shouldn't be losing sleep over lol
@@uncleirohsteashop it is, but its one thing added to the many that showed netflix saw money signs and didnt bring in any of the key points that made avatar what it is. Ita a nitpick but it shows once again their carlessness.
@@codyhughes1147 I don't agree
I liked this episode, but less than I liked the first two. For me, Azula established herself as a great character.
Didnt you hear what he said in the video. He doesnt want any mention of other episodes in the comments
@@dailydoodle42 I did but nothing he says here is a contradiction to that since Azula does show up in this episode
@@uncleirohsteashop He compared it to the first two episodes
@@dailydoodle42 ok but he still mentions this episode though
I understood why Azula is in the first season because they are developing her as a character to be the villain of the second season but I didn't understand why they rushed with May and Tai Lee it was a mistake I think they should have kept them for the second season and about the water bending they talked about it in the show he has a fear of learning New things that are not air but yes in my opinion it was a mistake
I get they mention that but even still gotta get over that fear. Regarding Ty Lee and Mai I didn't get the vibe from that scene that it was supposed to be a character development scene for them but more just to show up.
Dude, just a question
Are you getting paid to say nice things about this show? Everything is rushed, Sokka is empty, bad writing, bad acting everywhere except June, inventor's son and Jet or bad voices.
They made Ozai good like he cares about Zuko and in episode 5 they were so out of ideas that they took material from season 2 and 3, which makes me thing what trash they are gonna come up with to replace those episodes and figures.
Like come on, what a joke
"Are you getting paid to say nice things about this?" Hmm that's a good question, and honestly I am glad you asked because you clearly didn't watch my video fully through as I clearly mention at the end that I had some issues coming up within the next episode for episode 4. Soooo ya maybe next do yourself a favor and listen before you comment something as dumb as this. Also also, I did mention at the beginning that I didn't like that Aang doesn't waterbend. Did you hear me say that? Guess not.
i absolutely love your videos! i found you from that livestream you did with @antoinebandele. hope your channel continues to grow and grow!
Hey thank you so much I appreciate it!
Hated this episode. This is where the series lost me. From the lousy acting of Katara and some of the other actors, the cramming of stories, stuff from season 2 being used in this season… no they dropped the ball with this show. Massively disappointed with how they rushed and butchered the story. The pacing was off, and so is the writing.
I suppose episode 3 was the worst out of them all, and I don't like episode 4 - Into the dark
But the rescue and Leaves from the vine killed me, Lu ten... 😭😭😭🫀
I think 3 and 4 were the worst of all of them. But I would recommend finishing them. 5 and 6 are water better if not the best 2 and 7 and 8 are pretty good but not as good as 5 and 6
Listen I'll agree with you on the pacing of how everything is structured you won't find me disagreeing with you on that. Although I don't think that this series butchers anything completely. I think they made mistakes on a bunch of things but not enough to where I hated what they did at every turn and corner.
