Alright so I want to apologize to not only you the fans but also the goat himself, the cabbage merchant because my dumb brain completely forgot to mention him. Not just cause he was in the third episode but this one too. I liked that they gave him the respect he deserves and casted the OG voice actor. The ending with Bumi and Aang going down the chute and hitting his cabbage patches like in the cartoon was a nice touch.👍

I can honestly see what the directors were trying, given that this version was supposed to be more "mature" in certain ways. I think they made Bumi more serious because when I think back to them adding that Bumi was upset at Aang for not being there was because as being known (at least in the cartoon) as the "Mad King" now not having one of his supposed closest friends and then growing up where the Fire Nation destroyed the world made Bumi lose hope. So when Bumi saw Aang again after the 100 it's almost like a "you've missed so much already and now you're back to try and fix this?" I think it's just anger. Also the fact that the badger moles were probably expensive and trying to add in Flopsy and the other challenges conflicted with Katara and Sokka's family storyline.

Bumi is my favourite character of the cartoon. And as much as I miss that crazy king from the cartoon who happens to be the strongest earth bender in the world, putting that character here in this story, with this tone would look really silly. And I think it would completely kill the immersion of the series. Like Bumi said, he had to cope with 100 years of war, being put in impossible situations and having to make constant sacrifices as a ruler. But the actor who played it was phenomenal, he really did capture King Bumi's essence from the original.

I find myself liking this version of iroh and found bumi to be a perfect example of the complete opposite. I like iroh because while he doesn’t have the mannerisms of animated iroh, he still has his core fundamental character traits and spirit. Bumi the mannerisms were captured pretty well, and while some of the script writing was near identical to the animated, the context in which it was said was done in a way that just felt like character assassination.

In my opinion - King Bumi in Netflix is a much better character than Bumi in the animated series...Because let's face it - animated Bumi is just a very flat parody of Master Yoda in the Empire Strikes Back...
Meanwhile, a Netflix Adaptation shows a more complex and realistic take on a character....What would a hundred years of war and a tough responsability of a king, making hard choices day by day and year by year....Would do to a little, naive boy?
Aang indeed got to sleep through it all and is still a kid in both ways of the word..But Bumi had to grow up....Bumi's psyche was, no doubt, heavily damaged by living so long in a world with no hope...
The playfulness of Bumi is gone because, unlike the original - this Bumi had to struggle all these years alone...Making impossible, tough choices that would break most of us

I don't like that they immediately reveal that he's bumi in this version. It kinda makes the "games" pointless, since it was supposed to be a test for the avatar, a clue to reveal bumi as the king, and a little petty revenge from bumi to aang for abandoning him. The live-action took out that part of bumi's identity being a secret

And this adaptation has a lot of moments when a flat character is given more depth and motivation

  • @DonMachado

I thought the change in Bumi brought the character more in line with reality. He felt abandoned by the avatar and ended up fighting a war for his entire life. There has to be some animosity on Bumi's side. It makes more sense to me than playing tricks on Aang before revealing himself.
And yeah, the secret tunnel scene was an exposition dump. I thought depicting it with the wall hanging of the legend was pretty good. We had the very same exposition dump in the animated series albeit in song form. So in this one we got both. We need the exposition either way.
I liked how Katara stood her ground against Jet. I thought it was was a good way to show that Katara's confidence was ramping up, both in her bending and in herself.
In generall, I don''t mind the combining of some episodes and including scenes that were explored in later episodes of the animated series as long as it makes sense to the narrative. I doubt we'll see Omashu again later in the series. At least not for Aang to seek out Bumi as a potential earthbending master. I think it will be Toph from the get go.
And the cabbage man. It was a nice inclusion to have him. I too like that they are giving him the credit he deserves.

I can understand why some people didn't like the change they did with Bumi because he was a very charming character in the og show and the live action kinda took that away
For me though, i find it very realistic, they protrayed Bumi as a king who had to suffer the horrors of the war for a 100 years, having to make hard decisions every day, just like he said, and taking a huge toll on his mental health because of that, he is hurt and angry at Aang because he feels abandoned by him, so it's completely logical that he would take that anger against him the moment he sees him again, and Aang had to restore Bumi's hope and trust, i actually liked that change a lot

I don't mind the changes to Bumi. It makes sense that he would be pretty toughened by 100yrs of war and responsibility over the lives of people in his city. And it fits with the idea of earthbenders being tough and stubborn and harsh like rocks themselves. Like Kyoshi. And its more touching when he proves Bumi wrong and gets through to him in this version.
I don't mind them bringing in the cave of two lovers or making it sibling love. Aang is too obviously a kid for the love interest with Katara to be as believable yet. I agree the badgermoles being earthbenders should've been more clear.

  • @FeloniusFate

I feel like they probably knew if they got a season two they wouldn't be able to include everything like the return to Omashu and the reveal that it was taken so they basically included all of the relevant story arc in season one (like knowing that Omashu fell to the fire nation and Bumi was kidnapped) and the cave of two lovers because it was such an iconic and fan beloved episode.
I did think it was a little silly that they just figured out that the badgermoles could 'sense emotion' and explained it to the audience in a way that made it seem like they had empathic powers or something. They could've indicated in the music or the background noise that whenever Katara and Sokka were arguing or scared that their heartbeats were faster and that's when the weird things in the cave started happening (also would've helped with tension). I think we as an audience could realize that the badgermoles were freaking out and moving around things because of the yelling and anger between the siblings and when they calmed down and found resolution with each other then the badgermoles calmed down and became helpful (plus it would've mirrored the original solution to the secret caves without using the glowing crystal path). I think the show could trust the audience a little bit more sometimes there are ways to explain things to us that aren't straight dialogue. Plus using heartbeats or showing the badgermoles are sensitive to sound would be more in-line with the earthsense that we see with Toph in season 2.

And Zuko and iroh have great chemistry and I can’t wait to see them grow and develop as the show goes on! I didn’t like bumi either at the start of this episode but then as I thought about it, his portrayal made more sense then in the show…. Bumi was mad at the avatar, Bumi explains to aang, he didn’t have to make those crucial decisions of picking “who eats and who doesn’t,” and “who you save and who you don’t.” Stressful, life changing decisions, in the show it seemed bumi could careless in the cartoon, but the Netflix show, shows the death and the actual destruction the fire nation caused, and it makes me understand bumis pov at the start a lot better…..After 100 years his spirit, and his trust in friends were completely shattered….I really liked how they had aang teach him that he could trust in his friends by giving him the whistle back, which he uses to call his best friend apa, that his good friend bumi gave him. The flashback and change of bumis character really made me like this episode a lot more. The cave scenes were super rushed for sure… overall I give this episodes 3.5 cabbages out of 5.

More relatable imo and I don’t mind the change to the cave of two lovers either. There are many different shades to love and I think that was the purpose of the change and inclusion in the first season. There’s still a chance that they come back in Season 2 and Aang and Katara go through it for a reference to a different type of love. I will say I wanted to see more hints to that future relationship between Aang and Katara and we really didn’t get that until the finale but since we did, it gives a chance for Aang & Katara’s trip through the cave of two lovers. Also, on the back story of the two lovers before the cave, I thought that was beautifully animated so I have no issue whatsoever with the backstory

Love all Zuko and Iroh story scenes. The secret tunnel made sense, and adding the hippies sounds like they're not exploring Omashu the 2nd time in S2. Maybe for a bit to save Bumi. I also like the twist for the tunnel's "love" in the form of family/sibling love.
Now, in Bumi's case, I understood what they were coming from. Considering its more of a mature adaptation, Bumi having LIVED those 100 years of war turned him into a "mad" king and drive him resentful esp on Aang for leaving them. I don't mind the change cuz who wouldn't go crazy after living for 100 years of war, we see the effects of war here, as well as the earthbender with Iroh. The challenges though could've been better.

Here is what I would have done instead with episodes 3 and 4, while keeping all the same episodes in play. episode 3 would be just the mechanist and bumi, fold in their plots together more since those were the parts that worked best here, gives sokka and katara something to do while aang is with Bumi, and end it pretty similarly to episode 4 with the fire nation on their way. That leads into ep 4 where Bumi could have them escape through the tunnels, and that wouldn't take a full episode, you could easily do jets story after they leave the tunnels. heck, you could even still have him be the one who helps them into omashu and then when they run into him after leaving the tunnels sokka could be like, "really? this guy again?" i dunno, i think it would have spaced things out better rather thank smashing both the mechanist AND Jet into the omashu plot. and since they establish there is more fire nation presence as they head north, meeting jet as they head north makes sense.

I wasn’t entirely onboard with the change to Bumi initially. However, the more I thought about to, the more I realized that It would actually make sense for Bumi to be somewhat resentful towards Aang. On top of that, Bumi somewhat justifies his resentment in the episode. He basically says that all the hardships he and his kingdom faced were because Aang avoided his responsibilities as the Avatar. What makes it resonate with me even more is that Aang already believes the war and all its consequences are a direct result of his failing to fulfill his duties as the Avatar. Bumi's “resentment” only adds to Aang's insecurities, and reaffirms his belief that everything is his fault. It really adds a neat character wrinkle, and I'm all for it.

You know, in reality, Bumi here shouldn't even know that his friend Aang is the avatar. Even Aang himself only found out right before the air temple invasion. I liked bumi, considering this adaptation is far more darker, willing to kill people on-screen ruthlessly, it sets the perfect tone that the world is on war. In the cartoon, bumi was a crazy friend of aang, also a bad leader. But here bumi is still kinda crazy but he acknowledged the affects of war, in his last few dialogues. Omashu is not totally safe from fire nation either here so he's behaviour for aang make sense. Plus changes of bumi's outfit is also great, in the cartoon, he dressed something like monkey King I don't know. But here he wears a turban, jewellery etc. kinda like some of the ancient Indian kings, maybe they did this to kinda show omashu citizens like Indians, maybe. The whole ATLA world is based on Asian cultures, so it can be possible. And the actor who plays bumi, Utkarsh Ambudkar is also Indian ( I know he was born in America so you can also call him American).
Overall this Netflix was above average I will say (7.5/10) but still I want to see the season 2 of it.

At first I was a little put off by the change in Bumi but after a rewatch I understand what the writers were going for and ended up liking the change. In a real world situation it's totally understandable for people to be mad at Aang since all through their history the Avatar was the one who kept their world in harmony. All of a sudden that balance is missing in a time of war leading to Fire Nation domination. If anything we should have seen more people being bitter or feeling resentment against the Avatar. Yes he was trapped in an iceberg and it was not his fault. But the people don't know that. All they know is that he just vanished and let the Fire Nation reign havoc.

Zuko and Iroh did carry this episode hard.
I didn't like alot of how King Bumi was portrayed, constantly calling Aang 'Avatar' instead of Aang.... dumping on Aang for not being around and essentially telling him to 'grow up'... Aang not even asking about earth-bending... Not putting in floppsy... and the duel they have just seemed forced and lazy scripting... They could do so much more with a Character than can literally get away with saying anything.
The two lovers scene, I'm fine with it being in Season 1, as It was more of a filler episode anyway in the original for some character building and comedy. However instead on focusing on a moment between Aang and Katara, using it for love between Karata and Sokka is lazy writing, siblings always have love, it's never forbidden...
Aang is told by past avatars he must let go of the ones he loves as he can't protect them, thought it would of been better to play on this storyline. Therfore I feel like it would be better in Season 2, learn about the 'original earthbenders' and build on Katara and Aangs 'forbidden' relationship (they'll be much older too during this, so the romance factor of Avatar won't feel as awkward).

  • @Kaitonel

I'm fine with some book 2 stuff in book 1. Backstory that comes up in book 2 or 3, or filler being moved to book 1, I think is fine. It doesn't impact the story all that much. Even Mai and Ty Lee already being recruited.
Secret tunnels and tale of two lovers was fan service and I think a large part of "well if we don't get season two, we at least got this in for some fun" and I'm okay with that. It worked well within the episode narrative. I even don't mind it was not a romantic love.
Bumi... I'm torn, I'm so very torn. I get it, it was a more mature and realistic portrayal of a leader and somebody in his position. Having lived through 100 years of war, having rule to make those choices. It was not Bumi though. I'm not sure animation Bumi would translate too well to live action but they got his character wrong. Also doing away with the "twist" of him being aangs childhood friend hurt things. Him being so angry and a dick would have added to the surprise of aang finding out it is his friend Bumi and how much the war changed him. But Bumi being eccentric and a mad genius, far more clever than his look and actions give away is what makes Bumi... Bumi!
Iroh and zuko just wins. Amazing and emotional which is what they relationship needs especially when it comes to finale of book 2 and 3.
As soon as I heard it, I had to take a second and take it in, leaves from the vine was so beautifully done and used. Again, I think a large part of what they were going with that is if they don't get to season 2,or don't get to do ToBSS, they at least got to show it in this episode and to great effect.

my initial thoughts after watching ep4 is that i disliked this bumi, and hated the use of secret tunnels for development of sokka and kataras relationship which came out of nowhere.
sokka is a very different brother to katara in the live action, and has treated her with a lot of respect through the first 2 episodes, then out of nowhere in ep3 katara has an issue with sokka treating her like a child. the tunnels were used to fix a problem that didnt exist.
bumi is scarred from having to live through and make tough decisions throughout the 100 years aang wasnt around, this is a different bumi to what we know and at first i didnt like it but after sitting on it and rewatching the episodes it has grown on me. he is a more real version of someone who had to live through the war, and after his trails with aang he is a step closer to the bumi we know.
the side plot with sokka and katara is a waste of time and use of the secret tunnels when we could have used that time to finish jet and the mechanists stories and tie that into bumis final trail of aang being forced to make tough, imposible decisions that comes with the war

I really don't think the Mechanist story works at all in Omashu. At the Northern Air Temple, yeah, it makes sense. They're refugees who built a new home for themselves, and all of a sudden, the Fire Nation Army threatens to take it away from them all over again; so the Mechanist agrees to provide them with his inventions. He doesn't really have a choice. But in Omashu, he and Teo are completely surrounded by Earth Kingdom soldiers. It's pure cowardice and stupidity to cooperate with a small, clandestine Fire Nation group within an Earth Kingdom stronghold.

I feel like if they wrote dialogue between Bumi and Aang properly, then yes, maybe, maybe I would believe that somehow, “this” Bumi, who is obviously not the Bumi we all know and love, would be guilt tripping Aang constantly, instead of being the wise old man he is, and sucking it all up, and helping Aang, when he already had enough blame put on him by other people and himself, and now his best friend as well.. Bumi is a member of the White Lotus, so it’s really confusing why he acts like a dick towards Aang, instead of guiding him like he did in the og show. They could have do it differently, but *not* like this. This was too much of out of character for Bumi. I don’t mind slightly darker/more serious tone in terms of war portrayal in this one, but with the Bumi it’s too unrealistic, to the point where I wanted the scene between him and Aang just talking to end as quick as possible. The show wants to be serious a little too much I’d say, and it loses the magic the og show had with its humour, which Bumi had plently. Definitely could have been written better, and definitely not the character me and I’m sure many of others were hyped up for.
As for the cave of two lovers, which is also my second and final negative bit about this episode.
While yes, Bumi was weird, it was still just a brief moment, and as you said them actually becoming friends again at the end kinda saved it.
The cave of two lovers however.. My thoughts on why Netflix decided to mash this plot line into Omashu - mainly because they wanted to please the audience with Chong’s Secret Tunnel song, and not solely because it was convenient for Omashu story line.
Now, the actual backstory of how Omashu was founded is alright. What doesn’t just feel off, but screams “what tf is going here” to me is that it was Katara and Sokka going into tunnels. I already predict some people saying that sibling love also exists, and while it does indeed exist, it is *not* as impactful and powerful as one of the *two lovers,* which story tells about btw. It’s not a story about *two siblings* after all.. But oh well..
I will also just remind you that we actually haven’t seen ANY signs of Netflix developing Kataang in any way, which takes a good portion of book 1. From the first shot of Aang looking at Katara (love from the first sight), we know that he likes her. Maybe I’m blind, but if so, please show me a clear scene from the live action where they at least touched upon Aang having feelings for Katara.
And please, stop with nonsense like the age difference between actors. I’m not saying them going lips to lips is necessarily for the development of their relationship. I’m saying that it needs to be believable from the start that Aang cares about Katara more than just a friend. And what I saw right now was a very much wasted opportunity for Aang and Katara’s relationship to be developed.
What I would have preferred, on the other hand, is having Netflix wait for season 2 to actually be confirmed and have the story line of “The Cave of Two Lovers” integrated into one of episodes, if not the whole episode dedicated to it and general bonding between the gaang. Having this amazing filler episode with this Kataang moment happening in season 2 would solve the angry people’s issues with Gordon being too young for Kiawentiio right now, while also giving us a great development of their relationship and general bonding between the characters that really lacked in season 1..
I’m disappointed that they decided to bring a very much season 2 filler into season 1, therefore wasting such an amazing opportunity of developing Aang and Katara’s feelings towards each other to actually make them seem believable, as they should be. These guys will get married and have children after all, so they better sell Kataang to T in season 2.
To sum up, I liked Jet, I liked the mechanist and I liked Zuko and Iroh in this one, but tbh these two are the only ones who are mostly consistently good in their roles throughout the whole show. I didn’t like Bumi and didn’t like *at all* Katara + Sokka in the caves. Really a huge wasted opportunity for Kataang development left me sad, since I adore their relationship.
Having said that, solid 6/10 for 2 flaws and 3 positives.

I think I understand the reason why they aren't so quick on the whole relationship between Katara and Aang and that's because maybe in the cartoon they felt it was a little too quick. I mean in the first two episodes Aang gets that eye for her and so maybe over time they explain and show that a connection had been brewing.

    • @legendarymemer1095
      @legendarymemer1095 4 месяца назад +1

@@uncleirohsteashop I’m absolutely down for more properly paced development of their relationship, but that is only possible when the entire show is not rushed and paced accordingly, which isn’t the case with this show.
First episode of the og show multiple time hints on Aang being distracted by Katara and we already can think about something. It is 1: him staring at her with the wind blowing through her hair when she rescues him, 2: him smiling at her without realising when they swim on Appa back to their village, and Katara calls him out on that, which is a great dynamic, and of course 3: penguin sledding.
Netflix has plently of choice, as they could have pulled out at least one of these scenes from the og episode 1 to establish Kataang foreshadowing. I’m not asking for anything more than that, but with what we have so far, it’s too little compared to what we had in original book 1. And as you said, if they are taking it slow with their relationship, Aang being almost uninterested in Katara the whole 1st season and then rapidly starting to get the feels for her only from season 2 to season 3 *will* feel rushed anyway. I’m almost certain of that. Because the og show properly paced their relationship progressing from kinda 1 sided and awkward on Aang’s side through book 1, to Katara being more active as well in book 2 and especially in book 3, which felt harmonious. Of course I would have loved the og cartoon to show more of them being together before the final battle between Ozai, or after the war ended, but novels exist, so that’s that.

I agree with you on most everything but have a thought about something nobody seems to be mentioning. In the animation, Aang is crushing on Katara from the very start. So far in the live action there isn't any hint of that. I kind of miss it, but maybe that's just me. Also I've been wondering what people who aren't familiar with the original animation are thinking of the show. Have you heard anyone talk about that? This was the episode I had the most problems with, but that's because I'm a fanboy for OG Bumi. He was always my favorite character for a number of reasons. All of those reasons were thrown out the window with this 180 turn. Utkarsh did a very good job as an actor, so I have absolutely no criticism of him. My criticism is about what the writers and producers did to the character itself. The changes were bad, in my opinion. I really would have loved Bumi to still been that supportive, caring old man. Grandfatherly, compassionate, and wise. The 'mad genius' aspect was removed from the live action, and he was turned into, as you said, a dick. Pissed me off. I almost stopped watching as a result.

Ok but... this is my problem. Bumi couldn't have known Aang was the avatar. Nobody did. Only a few air normads who died the same day Aang escaped. For all intents and purposes, Bumi lost his friend Aang the night the fire nation attacked. The tv show is acting as if Bumi knew Aang escaped and ran away all along. But he didn't. He couldn't have. And it's a big character plot hole. This should've been acknowledged in the show. And it could've even given the show an even darker tone because if Aang had actually died, they would've gotten another avatar by now... But they were left alone.
My point is right at the beginning when Bumi reveals himself, he should't know Aang was the avatar. He should've been surprised, confused, etc. But not mad. UNTIL maybe Aang explains what happened.

I personally struggled with the middle episodes the most. While not perfect, the first two episodes were where I had the most enjoyment. By the time we get to episode 4, I had to really power through it. I thought the pacing was too slow. And there’s always a risk with fan service moments that they can become too ham fisted, which this was in regards to the singing hippies. While it was nice to see them, I immediately knew it was mostly a wink to the audience.
And adding book 2 scenes so early can be problematic if we get a second season because we can’t retread those story beats. Aside from the Cave of Two Lovers, the other book 2 moments that appear in this live action version is obviously the Tale of Iroh but tweaked here with the Leaves from the Vine instrumental to go with Lu Ten’s funeral. And then in future episodes using Wan Shi Tong because I guess they’re not gonna go to the library, and The Swamp was incorporated into the excursion into the spirit world (which also took the Fog of Lost Souls from Korra and the Mother of Faces from the graphic novel The Search). It’s a ton of content that doesn’t quite fit properly and feels more like they’re trying to tell the fans “we watched all the shows and read all the novels, here’s the proof.” To some people these moments work, but they didn’t quite for me.
And I personally didn’t care for the characterization of Bumi. I do understand that in this version he’s supposed to be jaded by 100 years of war and he resents Aang for not being there. But as some people pointed out, Bumi constantly talks about Aang goofing off and playing games. But he’s not. Sure, as a kid he did all that. But that’s just what kids do. Aang literally found out he was the Avatar the same day the Air Nomad genocide happened and he accidentally became trapped in ice. He was untrained and ill-prepared for the coming war. There was literally absolutely nothing Aang could’ve done if he hadn’t been frozen. He either would’ve been killed if he’d stayed or he still would’ve needed years to train in water, earth, and fire before he could attempt to stop the Fire Nation. Bumi’s anger is simplified into “you weren’t here and now I’m punishing you.” And the payoff of the “lesson” Aang teaches him that it’s okay to hope and have friends rings hollow to me specifically because Bumi has been bitter for decades. And after a few minutes with Aang he’s suddenly okay now?
It’s not the same as when Yukari learns hope from Aang on Kyoshi Island. For one thing, she’s much younger than Bumi and isn’t ruler of a huge city. So her mistrust and loss of faith only goes so far. And she sees firsthand the power Aang possesses when Kyoshi takes over his body and drives off Zhao’s forces. Bumi is too steeped in his misery and has only had a short basic duel against Aang. It just doesn’t fit, in my opinion, when all of a sudden Bumi has a change of heart. I could’ve accepted this new Bumi more had there been more reason for him to have this change of heart. It would be different if he had witnessed Aang helping Teo find out who was behind the bombings or heard about him fighting off a fire bender (Zuko) in the streets to protect the civilians. But all Bumi has to go off of is the bison whistle carving and Aang saying a few sentences about hope and friendship. It just resolved too quickly for me and I can’t believe Bumi is cool with Aang now and is a viable option to teach him earth bending (until he’s captured and obviously the real teacher will be Toph).

Alone it’s good but the character of bumi from the og would’ve never blamed aang knowing who aang is And blaming a 12 year old kid who couldn’t have even imagined the atrocities that the fire nation brought is insane even in a realistic sense it just didn’t make sense to me that they never really pointed that out and kept bringing the blame to aang. I could honestly make a vid explanation of how it just doesn’t make sense in the sense who bumi was supposed to be as a character but ion wanna keep writing essays but yea personally on its own if u ignore who bumi was it’s good, comparing it the original it doesn’t fit him. I feel like it would’ve been perfect if he would’ve said all those things but then flipped it into bumi himself Not feeling that way but letting him know that others will feel that way but don’t let that discourage him and remain the same old aang he knew and loved and think outside the box like a mad genius while doing so. Yeah for me Bumi really wasn't it for me. I understand changes, sometime it can give really good new things and add a lot to a story. It's even mandatory while adapting a story on a new format, you can't copy paste everything. But this time I don't understand the point. Ok, they wanted to teach Aang (and the audience) that he have to make difficult choices, that he's disappearence really left the world helpless and it's important ! But since the beginning of the show it's already constantly reminded to him by everyone, even the past avatars. Bumi, in the animated serie, was pivotal to Aang evolution in my opinion because first, he represented the patience in earthbending, patiently waiting for the good moment, never losing faith, but also he was the one teaching Aand "Do what no one would have thought.". When everyone was telling him he had to make choices, he had to take some hard decision against what his heart told him, Bumi showed him that there is always other solutions that could seem crazy but work. Which resonate through the different seasons and lead him slowly to the end of the show (I don't say Bumi was the ONLY one responsible for that but he was one of the first). And of course he was a really warm and positive presence for Aang.
But all this disappeared and it really saddened me. Because it was change for the sake of a lesson everyone is already teaching him while everything Bumi was supposed to bring was lost while it was adaptable even in a more serious tone.
But that happen, I still enjoy the show.

Maybe I was just thinking too much about the original, but I kept thinking maaaybe they were trying to make it so that, like in the og, Bumi was just pretending the whole time to try and get a lesson across to Aang . It looks like in the end he really had become bitter and disillusioned, but the whole thing just felt confusing to me, messily put together and executed. A bitter and resentful Bumi could’ve actually worked well, imo, with a little better execution.
I always wondered as a kid why Omashu wasn’t built on the mountain where the lovers had made their secret tunnel since the city was founded in their honor, so it being right under Omashu worked well for me… but how do they keep the badger moles from digging through the side of the mountain into the city?

I almost cried during the funeral scene, and when I say almost I mean I had to hold it together to not. The "little soldier boy" song playing in the background brought me to the brink. Now if they actually do Tales of Ba Sing Se, and he sings it, all bets are off.
I didn't mind the cave happening in this episode really. I think it was a creative way of getting that story line in. The part I had the hardest time is not having Aang and Katara going through it together. The family love part was ok, but it makes me feel like they're going to rush an Aang and Katara's relationship and they're going to start liking each other out of no where. I get that it would be weird for them to "kinda" kiss in episode 4, but they could have written passing glances earlier like in the Kioshi island episode.
As far as King Bumi goes I 100% agree. They did, one of my absolute favorite characters, dirty. In cartoon the Bumi had a method to his madness, so much so that Aang calls him a mad genius. But the bitter old, mean spirited Bumi that learned a lesson from Aang wasn't a great direction. Hearing that the original show writers walked out made me feel like how Bumi is portrayed is what did it. At least that's what happened in my headcanon. #NotMyBumi

I dont think they will even involve aang and Katara romantically. It was a really weak part of the animation

Also disagree about bumi 100%. This version was way better and more realistic than animation.

I don't think this one thing with Bumi is why they left lol

I didn’t like how they made them both gay for the Oma and Shu. But I know they can’t get everything right sadly I think this episode and episode 3 are the weakest. But the part with Zuko and Iroh are obviously the best by far.

That didn't bother me at all and honestly it almost went over my head because I was so transfixed on the visuals of the scene

In the original series, aside from telling the history of the city of Omashu, the tale of two lovers complements Katara and Ang's developing affection for each other. That does not work for Sokka and Katara's brotherly love. It's weird.

Thinking about it more it's a bit weird but I guess this version takes a liberty with the definition of love

I definitely think Zuko and Iroh had some of the best scenes in this episode. There's one thing I have to disagree with you on, though. While the story of Omashu's founding is somewhat exposition-heavy, the wording is almost identical to the original, and said in a very similar context, so you'd have to fault the original cartoon for that. The only substantial difference is that they made Oma and Shu both women in this portrayal (I love LGBT+ representation, so I'm very happy for this).

I hated the story surrounding bumi and the lack of tests, especially aang knowing who he was right from the beginning.
BUT i actually 100% prefer this bumi over the animated. Way more realistic. Someone in his shoes would be extremely bitter towards life in general and towards aang for being gone for so long. He lost what maybe was his only friend, and then became a leader who had to deal with all sorts of crap for decades.

Don’t agree that Bumi is 180 and even if he is he is not a D ! It’s a grown up version of the cartoon almost like you just don’t get it .. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT 10 out of 10 for me m, wouldn’t change thing 💁🏻‍♀️

Its not realistic in live action that bumi would be the exact same character as a 112 year old man as when he was a 12 year old kid. Kids grow up and become more adult and there is a war going on. Aang also wasnt there and left everyone with no protection so bumi would have resentment just like how people would be in real life. This makes sense unlike the cartoon which acted like aang almost never left.
