Ba sing se is the resolution of all the build up during book2 (azula team chasing, zuko s first redemption, appa s lost days etc... )
Honestly, i fear it will be disappointing because a lot of the build up will be missing. We ll probably not yave the drill, nor the desert and appa s lost days.
That will only leave and oddly working iroh/zuko pair to try to make a believable redemption/betrayal arc...

Here's the thing... idk if I would go as far to agree with you that it's as detrimental as messing up with Toph but I do agree with you that it's a big emotional beat to his story and character. It was an arc that developed him more than anything else he did in the entire cartoon. If I had to make a fair point on what they should do with that, I think it would be that they adapt only some of that arc in order to compensate for budget. Don't do the whole arc but do the most important parts of it. Everything around the development portion.

    • @etienne8110

      They ll probably skip it.
It s a subplot, has little incidence on the main plot, and would be costly in CGI...
It is a great subplot, builds charactérisation and has a lot of emotionnal moments (aang going berserk only to be calmed down by a sorry looking katara... Always breaks my heart).
But they just don t have the time, talent and money to do it justice...

I really like what they did with Lt. Jee and the rest of the crew. I was thinking that they went hiding to begin a new life after the events in the north. Then in Season 2, after some years Zuko (maybe during his lone wanderings) will meet Jee who now has a much happier life. He would then offer Zuko food and shelter (remembering how he got spared from being sacrificed in war). This would also make Zuko realize how a simple happy life is much better than being a prince. But then along the way, he'll remember his destiny and the battle within him that he must discover for himself...
In Season 3, it would also be cool to see Jee and the other former crew finally help Aang conquer the Fire Nation during the eclipse to have some good Fire Nation guys which the cartoon lacks. They can also help out in planning the invasion since they are familiar with the city... Then when Zuko finally becomes the new Fire Lord, they will be reunited as they recreate an Episode 6's scene, but instead Jee will say: "Attention, our Fire Lord has arrived."

My biggest criticism for season one was that it was live action. That by itself lends itself to a whole shit bag of issues when trying to adapt the story. There are just some things they really can't do because of the "Budget" rather than the skill of the artists who are animating and storyboarding etc. Imagine how incredible it would be if they had the same budget as the live action, but given all the time they needed to really flesh out the story to an extent that simply wasn't possible with the original. It would be incredible if, say, the Northern Watertribe arc was four episodes instead of only two. You could really dive deeper into Sokka and Yue's relationship and Aang and Katara's struggles with learning waterbending from Paku. I just really dislike this trend of adapting animations into live-action because it's seen as "more mature". And yet the live action paradoxically comes off less so due to it's propensity to exo-dump any chance they get instead of believing in the intelligence of its audience.

The direction is the main culprit of any S1 criticism. A lack of cohesive vision to find a consistent tone, direct actors, work with the DPs to compose shots during dramatic scenes, and edit the episodes... all of that rests on the directors.

At the very end of the teaser, they should show a headshot of Toph’s eyes opening. That would get me excited. S1 felt a little cramped, so some stuff was kinda confusing. If they can make it into 12 episodes for s2, I think it’ll flow better. Not seeing Aang practicing water bending in s1 was kinda disappointing but I guess they gunna do water and earth training in s2. I honestly just want the gaang to go back to Omashu, free Bumi and let him tell Aang about someone that waits and listen. Don’t drag it. Some of these side characters they have to meet cause they play a key role in helping the gaang in the future. So like Haru, the boulder, the swamp people etc you can’t cut them out. Toph, I can’t say this enough she has to be on point, no excuses. She’s literally the coolest in my opinion. I don’t know what you gotta do but the writers can’t fumble this. Okay, like don’t get me wrong the world building was stunning in CGI but honestly, I also want them to be in real environments. I felt like they were so focused on the effects that the writing and directing went over their heads. So what I’m looking for here in s2, I want better writing between these characters. I know they are young actors but I also want them to really deliver those lines better. Also, s2 and s3 are my favorite so I seriously don’t want them to change too much I actually need them to stay faithful as possible.

For me the cartoon was ok in season 1 but became good in season 2. I hope this will also happen to the Netflix show.
For people who havent seen the cartoon this next idea contains spoilers for the s 2 and 3 cartoon: Here are my ideas on how to include appas lost days in the story, if netflix reads this feel free to use or adapt my idea. They can do appa's lost days on a more budget friendly way by losing appa in one episode, focus on the other charachters for the next episode but with glimpses on whats happening to appa. For instance following the Kyoshi warriors for a scene and suddendly they stumble upon appa in a cave like they do in the cartoon, and appa having a flashback to what happened before he remembers the kyoshi warriors are friends of aang and they can win his trust like they do in the cartoon. That way they can give a glimpse of appa's story and that he has been trough a rough time but it will be a lot shorter , plus you can re introduce the kyoshi warriors and that they are outside kyoshi island. This way it also works with the shows story in which zuko eventually finds appa and acts like in the cartoon. Which makes appa still like Zuko in s 3
I also liked the story of lieutenant jee, i hope he will appear in the show again . Perhaps as someone on the airships in the sozins comet part , with an important role that helps the team out a lot.
I hated the changes they did to Bumi, maybe they can fix it a bit in s2 or 3. Maybe being a prisoner changes him into old Bumi or something.
I agree with most, more episodes would be a lot better, and better dialogue. The dialogue was very explane-y . If there are more episodes they can interact on a more relaxed way and that would make it less nescessary to explain everything so much. They can fix on the charachters and world building more.
I liked the show and see it as an alternative universe to the cartoon. And hope they fix the dialogue and get toph right.

I agree with the opinion that there were times where the exposition and just downright having what is going on being told directly to the audience, and in several instances being told two or three times the same thing by different characters. I can put up with it, to me its not the most dire make or break thing for this show, but I do think it would be better, especially in the second season now that things are set up, story, lore, and world wise, to tone that down or remove that problem entirely, even.

I think the main points to hit in the first four episodes are going to be the following: EP1: showing Aang waterbending, introducing the gang to Azula at Omashu, EP2: meeting Toph, Zuko alone, EP3: This will probably be elements of The chase and bitter work and maybe leading them into the desert EP4: The desert/Library stuff, Losing Appa. I expect they will be arriving in Ba Sing Se sometime early in episode 5 at the latest and whether they do the drill or not, because they will NEED the last four episodes to take place there if they only do 8 episodes. My BIG question is when, where, and how much will fan favorite Suki show up, because she has some good places she COULD show up, but are bits of the cartoon that could get cut. But I think they seem keen on expanding her role a bit too so who knows.

Well given in Book 2 her main role was helping Appa during the lost days arc and then being attacked and captured by Azula I would think she doesn't have that big of a role. That and also helping that one family across serpents pass, but will that family even be adapted. So there are 2 points of which she can show up. I bet one will happen and the other won't or very little of it will.

I agree more episodes would be good. There would be more space for developing stories. What might also have been a reason to make series 1 in 8 episodes is the fact that several members of the main cast were young teenagers at the time of shooting. It isn't good for such young actors to be making so many long days on set and these days countries have laws putting constraints on child labour. And for good reason. But if pre production for series 2 and 3 has only just started, shooting will probably start somewhere next year and these concerns are less of an issue with the main cast since they're all 3 to 4 years older than when they shot series 1.
And they'll have to explain how Aang goes from 12 to 16 between series 1 and 2.😉

Jeong-jeong is quite an important side character since he’s part of the white lotus which s reveled at the last season. Haru (his father as well) is important since it helps develop katara’s character and would be part of the black sun episode. Also for jeong jeong, I think he needs to appear as he would try to teach aaang fire bending for a bit before aang stops since he hurts katara which is part of Aang’s development and reason to not fire bend. I stand by my 2027 or 2028 release date and argue that for it to be done properly, this is a more realistic time scale to get the season we want rather than another rushed season that doesn't quite hit the mark. Also, it's highly likely they will want to do seasons 2 and 3 as 1 block, perhaps with some sort of break in the middle. They might even film both together.
The casting of Toph will be important, but the writing for her will make or break the series as a whole, given just how crucial a character she is not just as Aang's earth bending teacher but how she interacts with the rest of team avatar (including Aang and Zuko) and how that affects their character development. Shin-Fu, the Boulder and Toph's earth bending teacher whose name I have forgotten absolutely should be adapted along with the Earth King, Basco, Long-Fen, and the Dai Li. I hope that the sand benders and the general plot of The Library, including Appa's kidnapping, are adapted, but I fear they might get dropped. I think the little boy and his family from Zuko Alone should also be adapted given that they provide a crucial insight to Zuko of how the rest of the world sees the fire nation and really begins the start of his journeytowards joining Aang and team Avatar.

Now, judging from what I have seen from clips, I really don't think they will do Toph justice. She would probably be sidelined like Katara, and her character arc would most likely be destroyed, simply because of her how her parents treated her in the original show. And with my opinion on how they would do Toph, it's more so based on how they portrayed Katara and Suki in the clips that I have seen, which is either losing her personality like I have seen with Katara, or having her dabuet episode be about her relationship with Sokka like I have seen with Suki, and considering how they both were in the original series, I don't have high hopes for Toph. I tried following the positive, hope for the best commentators but was let down. The skepticism I had for s1 now rests over s2 & 3. Albert Kim has stepped down as show runner so maybe they'll make some other big changes in creative leadership. I feel like they can improve on the critiques they recieved in s1, like the dialogue, acting, and writing in general, but where do they go with the story? They made some consequential changes in the first season that will affect the world moving forward. The spirit world was mangled, the comet powered benders were unimpressive, Katara's personality, and some other stuff I can't think of right now. They need to have a plan for the story, char dev, and themes for s2 through 3 going into this. They have a lot of ground to cover to give us the compelling characters, lore, and story we did not get in S1, all this without making the changes and transition jarring and disjointed.

I admit I would catch hype fever after some of the trailor drops and tv spots but my gut feelings and concerns always came back. It just seemed like some Avatar CCs would glance over the signs of bad acting and dialogue that were present prerelease, and the show validated my concerns. If Bk2 can do all the things mentioned it will be magnitudes better than S1, fixing the show-not-tell problem itself would have made S1a significantly better show; it would have fixed a lot. I think it's unavoidable that S2 will need more episodes and a new crack team of writers, like Netflix needs to get smarter with the budget and invest in some experienced writers and maybe some story consultants who know the material, then maybe they can correct or mitigate some of the missteps from S1. Hard agree on additional episodes. I still maintain that two more episodes in Season 1 would have worked out the pacing issues, especially at the front end of the season.
I'm actually not overly concerned about performances, as I realize that this was the first time several of the kids have acted, and experience and self-confidence are good teachers, so I think they'll do better in Seasons 2 and 3, I'm not too worried about that.
They can absolutely work Tales from Ba Sing Se and Appa's Lost Days into the show, but space them out. We don't need one episode dedicated to Appa trying to get back to Aang; that can be shown parallel to Aang searching for him, so it can be spaced out. As for Tales, each one of those can be worked into the time they're all in Ba Sing Se, so it, too, can be stretched out and broken up. That said, I do think when it comes to Iroh's Tale, that should be addressed asap, like when he and Zuko arrive, they pass the spot where Lu Ten was killed, and Iroh feels the need to put paid to what happened, so he can move on. If it's Lu Ten's birthday, even better, but addressing that hurt for Iroh needs to be done. The funeral scene in Season 1 was a beautiful moment, and so touching, but this is the event that led Iroh to turn his back on the war, and his family to some extent, and that needs to addressed.
Toph is going to be the main point here, they're gonna have to get her right. Not having her in the show is gonna tank it out of the gate, and I just can't see this team even consider dropping her, so I'm not worried there. But fleshing out her seismic sense and how she uses it, especially in combat, is going to have to be done right. I'm not a filmmaker, so I don't have suggestions there, but I do think they need to weigh their decisions with how she's presented. Whoever the actress ends up being, she *has* to be Toph. Just has to. You can't play around with her, because that's not who the character is. But they have to get the humor right, too, because that's a big part of her character, too. That should be the first thing that the team works on, getting her right.
On a personal note, as far as effects go, and this was a pet peeve I had in S1: waterbending needs the follow through. The actual bending looks fine, I have no issue there, but there are several instances in S1 where waterbending occurs, and no one looks like they got wet from it afterwards. Katara accidentally hitting herself with the water whip in Omashu is a good example. She hits herself, there's a splash, but looks dry as a bone immediately afterward. So please, Netflix, if you're reading this, fix that little issue for me, please, okay?
Overall, I feel like going forward, it'll be smoother paced, because the setup and initial worldbuilding have been addressed, so exposition shouldn't be so heavy from now on. They just need to work on tightening up the writing and making sure Toph is done right, and if they do more episodes per season, that should balance out storylines much better. Plus, I wouldn't mind seeing more of Jee and the 41st have a bigger role, I like the way they made the crew more of an actual part of the story instead of just being the long-suffering, faceless sailors who serve Zuko and lose at Pai Sho to Iroh. Give us music night!

Im going to be honest about this: Netflix needs to do less! They tried to fit too much of season 1 into their adaptation. It wasn’t needed! They need to tell us this story the way that fits an 8 episode structure. Do less episodes but expand them. This shows best moments are where they expanded storylines (Iroh extended conversation with the earth kingdom soldiers). I don’t want this to be close or a 1:1 of the cartoon…if anyone wants that just watch the cartoon. Make an Avatar show that has good writing and story close to the original but not a recreation of the cartoon.
I feel bad for the Toph actress who ever they cast. With the way fans criticized almost everything about the adaptation at some point. Trying to portray a blind but not blind girl in live action is going to be hard even for the best actors.
