Very interesting talk. I’ve been with ps plus for a while and it’s worked for me. There are just too many monthly games, before it was 2 and now it’s 3-4. This adds up to a larger library overtime, that honestly I haven’t had time to play through them all. And we have to consider the price difference. Looking at the advertised price if you want online play you need gamepass ultimate on the Xbox side. So that works out to $180 a year vs $60 a year for ps plus. So I know Xbox is offering first party games, but on the ps side you can still buy two first party or any new games of your choice and still be around the gamepass ultimate price. Factor in game sharing on digital purchases or waiting for a sale and you can get even more games within that $180 dollar gamepass ultimate price range. I still agree that GPU is the greatest value, but that is if you have time to play all the games on both the Xbox and PC side. I personally have gotten back into playing 1-2 games at a time because by the time I finish one, the other game I wanted goes on sale. You also have to think about the price of game pass vs ps plus. For a year sub game pass is $120, ps plus is $60. Half the cost if paying month to month they are the same but long term is a 50% increase. Your paying for more games and the promise of all first party titles. Both are great deals. And you still need a service on both consoles to play most games online.
@@SoSickRick I looked up the prepaid game pass cards which is what I bought when I purchased a series x after skipping the xbox one generation and your average users would buy. If their are deals that out there great. I know you can get ps plus codes off g2a for $30 but the game pass code on the same site is $100. @@jparish1987 here’s how to buy game pass ultimate for the cheapest way. Let your current sub of Game Pass run out. Buy Gold cards whatever allotment 3 months 12 months whatever i suggest getting as many 12 month Gold cards you can (3max) and pay $15 to convert your existing gold to Game Pass Ultimate I did this for 2 years for $135
If you have had PS+ since inception or at least for 5+ years and have made sure to add every game that's been on the sub', then yes I think it's as good as GP. They've had a LOT of games, many big titles. That might change once MS start actually releasing regular big IPs though. If Perfect Dark, the future Bethesda games etc all get released day one on GP then it'll jump ahead. I'd be curious if that's a financial model that's sustainable tbh. Personally not a fan of where all this might be leading. That ring of "it's great value" could come to haunt us.
Almost but not quite. Can't play PS3 games with modern PS hardware whereas Xbox has their backwards compatibility. I keep all my hardware, but I know people who trade them in so they just have modern stuff.
I feel like it’s an interesting discussion because on Game Pass, pretty much if not all 1st part games will always be in Game Pass, however anything that’s not first party gets shuffled out after a time period, with PS Plus the games you get are games you own so long as you have PS Plus. And at some point the amount of PS Plus titles will meet and surpass the Game Pass 100 + titles right?
That’s just not true. Most of the really big AAA titles or PS4 titles on PS Now get cycled out pretty quickly (e.g. Control of Shadow of the Tomb Raider were only 4-5 months) even some first party games like Spider-man were only on for about 3 months. It’s all the PS2 and PS3 games that stay there in perpetuity
I just played the Rachet and Clank PS4 remaster and it was also my first time playing the series, I have never played Jak and Daxter or Sly Cooper. not sure why I was not into that genre of 3D platformers back then. Luckily my wife has the rest of series on PS3 still so we can play them all before the new game
Everybody complained when Sony removed PS3 and Vita games and reduced the number of games to 2, BUT the reality is the quality of the games MASSIVELY increased and since PS5 this has just got better and better. Long may it reign
I think PS+ is a competitor even though the two subs are looking to provide different things. PS+ is cheaper at $5 a month for online access and monthly games while Xbox Game Pass is $15 a month for online access and the Game Pass library. Game Pass gets day one releases but costs $120 more per year, where PS+ gives great games that are usually 1-2 years old. Like the PS+ lineup for the last few months has been unbeatable for $5. Maneater, Control Ultimate Edition, Final Fantasy 7, Remnant: From the Ashes, next month is the new Odd World game. The selection and day one aspect of Game Pass is great but PS+ is offering a great service too, they just don't market it to customers the same way.
The best thing Imagine Dragons did was the music to that amazing Mission Impossible Fallout trailer. Possibly the best trailer of all time, only recently surpassed by Judas and the Black Messiah.
I mean if your online came with games you pay full price on Sony for then I guess it holds value but I would honestly say without bias that Sony value is within its own exclusives and not much else Xbox can do the other aspects better and have shown that for years
I mean not really? They are so far from each other it's unbelievable. PS+ is miles better than Live while Gamepass is miles better than PS now. Comparing the services directly is just a non-starter. There is no conversation there. If you compare the total PS + and Now package vs Xbox gamepass ultimate there is an actual conversation to be had there and more interesting comparisons can be made.
Just want to note, the entire Ratchet & Clank series is great and available on PS3. They play pretty well. Barrett, there's your next big retrospective review series!
I think there's a much more interesting discussion to be had around the value offered by PS+ and PSNow combined compared to Gamepass Ultimate (both PlayStation subs combined cost less than Ultimate for a 12 month sub bought directly off the PS or Xbox Store - no converting other subs for £1, or using retailer discounts, PS Store Cards, time limited sales / offered, or cashing in reward points). I consider both PlayStation subs combined better suit my gaming tastes, but I acknowledge Gamepass holds a big plus with the promise of more games releasing Day 1 & staying on the service for longer (potentially forever in the case of first party games?). So rack it all up - number of games, variety of games, discounts, cloud saves etc. and that might be an interesting debate rather than retreading the same couple of points every week - if you prefer talk about Xbox One owners, Xbox Series owners, PC owners, owners of Xbox & PC, PS4 owners, PS5 owners and PSVR owners or PSNow subscribers through PC each as a separate "value" proposition - then round it off talking about whether X-Streaming to TV or phones is actually viable / potential barriers to entry (data costs, additional hardware needed, touch controls etc.). There's a lot more that could be said if you are really want to put a bit of time and research into it.
@@SoSickRick actually I thought Gamepass was $15 per month, without accounting for other ways to sign up (converting Live subs for £1)? I haven't seen a full year price advertised anywhere so assumed there was no discount for signing up for 12 month's at a time. It's hard to follow because I'm in the UK where Ultimate is shown as being £10 per month with only the monthly price shown on the UK Xbox store (so that would be £120 a year). Then I've seen $15 as the monthly price for Gamepass in the US but because Xbox only ever push the $1 conversion price & no one covering games actually talks about what it costs for someone outside the Xbox ecosystem to sign up I thought it would be a worthwhile discussion - the whole thing is poorly advertised in terms of real world cost for someone to sign up & what do you actually get from Ultimate compared to the other Gamepass options? Similarly I know PS+ and PSNow are both £50 for a 12 month Sub in the UK, but you can often get them both on sale (usually around 2-3 times a year) for about £35 & if you buy PS Store Credit from physical retailers you can normally knock another £5 off the Sub price (retailer sales will offer Store Cards for £5-10 below face value - so £50 of store credit can be bought for £40 if you shop around / wait for sales - then you can use the store credit to buy the 12 month subs when Sony offer discounts through the store) - so exploiting these sales can get 12 months of both PS+ and PSNow for around £60 - so both subs for half the cost of Ultimate over here. I think the US Ps+ and PSNow prices are both $60 for 12 months but again no one ever really talks about it (probably because the people making the shows get it for free anyway). But I'm saying put all those sales / loopholes to one side & just go with the standard prices for a 12 month sub and try to make an honest assessment of the value to a normal consumer. They'll always be ways to game the system, but for people new to an ecosystem those kinds of loopholes aren't always known / obvious - also talk about the US prices, because I'd be interested to actually hear how they compare. I always get the impression Xbox is a heavily US first brand - hearing Gamepass Ultimate is $75 for a 12 month sub, without using other discounts / loopholes compared to £120 being asked from UK consumers seems to change the narrative on the value of Gamepass quite considerably & it's more understandable why everyone's so quick to parrot "the best deal in gaming" line. Honestly though if that price is accurate for Gamepass in the US then that makes the UK price a complete rip off & it's pretty shady price gouging from Xbox - no respect for their foreign audience.
Before I watch this, my opinion is no, primarily because GamePass is instant access to a ton of games. If I subbed to PS+ right now, I’d only have the, what is it, 5 games currently on there. It’s really good over the course of a few years, but that’s a much longer investment than what you get immediately with Game Pass.
You’d have access to the entire ps+ collection on ps5, which wipes the floor with any games Microsoft offers on game pass, and you’re paying significantly less.
@@areallytallguy I disagree, because first I would need a PS5 for that. GamePass has mostly the same games on X1X as on XSX, plus there is PC Game Pass which has unique games, as well as access to game streaming. Not saying that the PS+ collection is bad at all, but that’s , what, 20 games? And like 5 of those are already on Game Pass? They should have just added those games to PSNow if the intention was to directly compete with Game Pass, which I don’t think it was. It’s a different service.
@@areallytallguy most games on the ps plus collection is on gamepass, and Gamepass has much more quality on it than the collection itself. Ur clearly blinded by passion
100% agree with the OP. If you've had PS+ for a long time and added every game then it currently competes (and in some respect is better). But if you're new or even been subbed for a year or two then nah. The PS+ collection is great if you're new to the ecosystem and it's unquestionably a good customer friendly move by Sony for new players and PS5 owners. I have to say without sounding like a Sony fanboy I'd rather play most of them over the majority on my GP. That's not to say I haven't played a LOT of the games on GP and enjoyed many of them. Once MS start releasing big IPs and dropping them day one on GP it'll be a no brainer. I do worry about where that might lead tho'.
Until Xbox first party gets its shit together absolutely ps plus is a true gamepass competitor. The only true value Gamepass has with is first party day and date and until they actually put out games for 1 and they are actually good ps plus games every month with the ps plus collection is way more compelling then the $180 for gamepass ultimate.
thanks to banking 3 years I got those 3 years on sale last black friday for just over $150. Plenty of great deals out there for GPU and Plus all the time.
36:00 There is a flaw in Parker Petrov's question as almost all of the big games coming to PS Plus around the PS4 launch were only on PS3. They could not and probably didn't sell more PS4s through these PS Plus offerings. Now though all of the big PS4 games can be played on PS5 so threre is a big difference IMHO.
Love this podcast, but reducing the state of play announcements to a shorter topic than a vr blogpost and talking at length about ps plus again? Discuss all the games shown, Sifu and the studio behind it in depth, Solar Ash gameplay and possibilities, FFVIIR, the KF GOTY, announcing a whole new episode and the implications of the prices/updates, crash opening the show for some damn reason, etc. etc. If not here, where else would that be done? If these were discussed elsewhere in the podcast my bad, I skipped the main topic because of time and am much more interested in state of play discussions. Truly feel that should be the title topic.
Loving the ECW T-Shirt Gregg. Got me thinking... If you were to choose a hardcore match out of the following against Blessing, Which would you choose and who would win? Hell in a Cell Last Man Standing Inferno Match
I love both Jak and Ratchet series. But if I have to choose one, I'd choose Ratchet and Clank. The series just got more love from Insomniac and even if along the way they didn't had a big a hit in the PS3 era, but A Crack in Time is one of the best games of the series. I recently played it again on PSNow and it still holds up so good! While I liked a lot the reboot, its not my favorite. Still Rift Apart is my most anticipated game of the year!
To sort of touch on Barrett’s point of Jak 2 not feeling good on PS4. The Jak games ported to PS4 are actually PS2 emulations and there’s a lot that’s straight up broken about them. They don’t feel good at all and Jak can’t move the way he was originally designed. The only way to play them well is to take out the PS2 or HD collection on PS3. Super aggravating!
I gotta say, PS+ is on fire lately. It really kept me entertained through the last couple of months since the PS5 launched. The PS+ Collection plus the great monthly games make PS+ really a great deal in my opinion.
I think you guys need to look into how big ps plus is at least one or more games on ps plus in int the top played games for that month even beating out major aaa releases that month Ps plus is a better value based on time used for games that are provided compared to gamepass
Ps plus was dope when it started. 2 ps3 games, 2 ps one games, 2 minis, a dynamic theme and avatars. They then took away the minis and themes for vita games, then took away ps one games and it was just Ps3 and vita, than ps4 and vita, then just ps4. My library has nearly 1000 games and they are high quality titles
The simple answer is no never had never will be don’t matter have those 2-3 exclusives but when it comes to subscriptions and online gaming Xbox has that one clear
PlayStation Plus > Xbox Games With Gold Xbox Game Pass > PlayStation Now I think Sony should rebrand and combine PlayStation Now + PlayStation Plus Collection + PlayStation Plus + Crunchyroll + Funimation. They could even offer tiers for the overall service to make it as feature packed and content rich as you want it, depending from person to person.
@@DVRKSTXR I realise that, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was trying to reinforce your point and make it clear that a lot of people REALLY don't want PS+ to change or get more expensive, especially with additional niche services they have no interest in.

I mean if you compare PS+ to Game Pass over the last 2 years, then PS+ would win hands down. Because the games are better. Sony first party just makes better games. Not trying to be mean or fanboyish but as the BAFTA nominations just came out and really shows this, Sony is beating Microsoft and Nintendo combined in nominations by more than 4 to 1 (I think it is 44 noms to 10, if I counted right lol). It's cool that Microsoft first party all come to Game Pass but when they are games like Crackdown 2 and Battletoads, it just doesn't mean that much.
As far as the comparison between Microsoft and Sony then yeah that's all valid. Sony first party games being better than Nintendo though? Categorically wrong. And using BAFTA nominations to try to make that argument is laughable lol Sony has never in history released a game that was objectively 10/10, their closest was Horizon at an 8.5
@@AREAlhero so much to unpack here. One, never said Sony first party was better than Nintendo, though they are absolutely competitive with them. I literally only used BAFTA nominations as a single thing to make my point, because they literally came out this morning as this video came out and it was relevant. As Sony as many 10’s, God of War, TLOU, Uncharted and Bloodborne to name a few.
I think they might only be giving these big games right now to make up the lack of big ps5 games. Once the big exclusives start dropping the quality of plus games will prob see a drop.

A year of game pass ultimate is $75 if you’ve already had game pass ultimate and $61 if you haven’t.... so how’s that argument hold up?
@Truth 2 Power this would have been great. And now Nintendo copied them too :(
@@SoSickRick I looked up the prepaid game pass cards which is what I bought when I purchased a series x after skipping the xbox one generation and your average users would buy. If their are deals that out there great. I know you can get ps plus codes off g2a for $30 but the game pass code on the same site is $100.
@@sherpawhale Yeah, I'm the same. Good point I hadn't thought about that.
GPU gets you roughly 500 games right now, and with the 23 studios and 40 teams that number will keep going up over time.
Damn first time I hear someone acknowledging Ratchet Deadlock!
Fresh out the box. Stop. Look and watch. Ready? It's aaaalll of Blessing's shirt!

PS Rewind
Do we need to do another bracket again? Of PlayStation characters fighting?
How about PS Look Club for the book club.
The best thing Imagine Dragons did was the music to that amazing Mission Impossible Fallout trailer. Possibly the best trailer of all time, only recently surpassed by Judas and the Black Messiah.
I like P.S. Let's Play It, my only request is that after you complete the game, you're rewarded with a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut
What you think Rachet ain't got guns? That he sold them off, because he stays well off?

PS+ is more comparable to Live then GP.
Value is subjective. I get more value with ownership over renting. Thus, value is subjective.
I mean if your online came with games you pay full price on Sony for then I guess it holds value but I would honestly say without bias that Sony value is within its own exclusives and not much else Xbox can do the other aspects better and have shown that for years
U don't own the games. U keep them through a pay wall known as ps plus
@@paulhayes6737 I'm talking about buying over renting.
@@matthewbrug6337 PS+ isn’t close to the same as Xbox live and you can google best live service for gaming it ain’t Sony lol
Just want to note, the entire Ratchet & Clank series is great and available on PS3. They play pretty well.
Barrett, there's your next big retrospective review series!
Maquette could be a great showcase for Dreams!
It’s funny you have to make qualifiers to make Ps+ and now cost less 😂 it’s $75 a year for Game Pass Ultimate
@@areallytallguy lmao you clearly don't have game pass and don't know what's available on it.
@@jessenorris6499 you can get 3 years of ps plus for $90 right now on cdkeys gamepass is usually only Black Friday

Book club name: "PS Gotta' Read em All!"
I gotta say, PS+ is on fire lately. It really kept me entertained through the last couple of months since the PS5 launched. The PS+ Collection plus the great monthly games make PS+ really a great deal in my opinion.

I think Sony should rebrand and combine PlayStation Now + PlayStation Plus Collection + PlayStation Plus + Crunchyroll + Funimation. They could even offer tiers for the overall service to make it as feature packed and content rich as you want it, depending from person to person.
A LOT of people don’t want Anime or Now at all or to pay ANY more per month. If this is done it needs to be an option only, don’t change PS+
