Felling Dead Trees & Major Clean-Up at the Off Grid Mountain Cabin.

  • Ever since we chose this site for our new off grid tiny cabin, the grounds have bothered me...because it's a mess! There are about a dozen dead trees, fir and pine, that need to be felled, cut up for firewood, and dragged away. About a dozen more dead and fallen trees are scattered about, and it's a huge eyesore. These trees were left over from a fire that tore through this area several decades ago.
    Well, no more! In this video, I tackle this clean-up beautification project once and for all. I'll cut a few trees down like a pro, and there are a few others that don't exactly go as planned. I yank and pull and drag and throw about a thousand dead branches neatly into piles to create wildlife habitat.
    With the grounds cleared and firewood neatly stacked, we can finally start thinking about the next outdoor project at the Spur Cabin: the firepit! The big rocks are already there if we want to use them, waiting patiently. No, it probably won't happen until Spring, but it's never too early to start dreaming and planning. In fact, if you have a unique firepit idea, drop me a comment and let this awesome community know.
    Thanks for watching this episode of ‪@LifeontheMoose‬ ! As always, I appreciate you tuning in.
    And oh by the way, I welcome binge watching! Just click on your favorite playlist, and enjoy.

    Hi Patrick, good to be able to join you on the job site.
    Boy helping you drag all the branches and and cut up logs was a real drag! But all the hard work you did has payed off and the area is looking pretty spiffy, not to mention all the fire wood… can’t wait for the first fire.
    Well, I’ll see you soon to work on the lap siding.
    Good luck on the Deer hunt 👍

    Another wonderful visit to the cabin. Boy do I know the feeling of being cold and sweaty, Fortunately I am usually close enough to the shower I don't have to drive there. I recently did some similar work on my property, not nearly as large as yours. So on behalf of me and all the small wood land creatures, you made pre fab homes for, Thanks for the clean up. Looks great.
    I also left a few piles around to give shelter to the little fellows. Have a great hunt, see you soon.

    I like keeping ground cleaned up as well, fire safety, but I found leaving some logs on ground…and limbs….offers a good place for young trees…pines…to get a foot hold. Offers shade and moisture. Just my thoughts, like the idea of habitat for critters👍

    Just a quick thought. If you are going to continue to fall trees on the place. Please start putting an undercut in them. Trees only kill a person once. Its not worth it to not do it correctly. I had a very close call on a tree that was only about 40' tall. Top came out. I have fell trees up to almost 300' tall and 7' diameter. They are often easier and safer than the little ones.

  • @Maxid1
    @Maxid1 9 месяцев назад

    10:56 You hanging that tree up reminds me of my Dad. When we first started select cutting our woods, they were triple canopy thick in upstate Ny. So it was pretty easy to get a hang up. Then my Dad starts thinking he can knock down the hanger by dropping the next tree on it. Good idea in theory but his execution was miserable.I think he had like 6 or 7 trees hung up when he could have dropped 5 of them in the cleared path of the other 2 he'd dropped. If he'd hit them low in that path it probably would have brought them all down, or most of them. I think the wind finally brought them down. You learn as you go. I don't remember if he was cutting pines to get them out of the way of the skidder or the hardwoods we were after. Big fun either way. All old growth, all huge.

    I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the good content. Every time you suggest something for your audience to help with it reminds me of something I once heard: "Work just fascinates me, I could sit and watch it for hours!".
    I used to be a professional faller, and one little tip that I will share is when cutting small trees instead of using wedges I would make a "push pole" ahead of time and cut the tree as usual. If the tree was leaning the right way (or the wind was favourable) the tree would just fall over by itself, but if it was leaning back a little, I would cut the backcut and leave the saw in the cut then grab the push pole to help it fall the right way. Much easier than getting a wedge into a small diameter tree. There are other options, but that was my go to!
