zeustweeter Hi & Thanks for Watching. We understand your concern & comment. We've answered the concern, many times, prior - but, want you to understand. Our intention for The Gruhn Show was to highlight George's one-of-a-kind world renowed knowledge of these fine vintage guitars not his playing ability (which is quite good, if you watch some of our Season 3 episodes). The goal of the Show was primarily historical and not a "live jam". We hope this makes sense & yet, we do understand the reason for viewers wanting a "play-test". In Season 4, upcoming, you will be greatly pleased by "what's to come" & thus......Stay Tuned! Sincerely, The Musician Network (TMNtv)
I still remember back in 1958, my distant cousin Leroy had bought a new Sunburst Les Paul, I remember everyone commenting that he couldn't play that good and would snicker about it . I thought he was good myself. How I wanted one, but no such luck . I got a cheap used Rickinbacker with no lessons. I have often wondered if my cousin still has the Les Paul. Would he have the last snicker!
On Friday's, all thru Summer 2014, we're showcasing Season #1 & 2 episodes from George's Show! Here's two (2) unbelievably cool vintage Les Paul's - a 1955 & a 1958! Check it!
Danny Kirwan made good use of a 3 pickup custom in FWM in 71+72. Steve Jones used an early custom with the Sex pistols, can be seen in 'silly thing' video
To me, and thanks, btw, for your reply, no amount of explaining justifies negligence. My amateur psychoanalysis says that people throwing around stuff like that are either a) showing off or b) simply desensitized after handling so many that they (the people) no longer use the same care they would have years earlier. But, that's his problem, not mine, thankfully! I would go insane in that position. :)
CaribSurfKing1 it would cause a 60cycle hum, the relationship of the magnetic fields of the "close in pick-ups" on each side. kinda' like when you'd be onstage in a bar with a single coil and a nearby neon beer sign makes you spend the whole gig standing sideways...lol
@@markmarsh27 Yes and no. The Frampton is wired as a default 2 pick ups Les Paul but with one tone and three volume, so that in any of the three standard positions he can dial in as much as he wants of the middle pick up, this includes all three of them together, of course. I think it's the cleverer configuration you can have with this guitar.
i believe van gogh sold one painting. STILL A SHOCK THOUGH! since he is considered one of the most influential if not the most influential artist of modern times.
I may never afford to buy one of these even if it were broken in two pieces.. However, I'm glad they're that expensive. Gives ya something to look forward to. I don't think it's silly at all. Maybe I'll stick to reissues as my dream guitar, and rightfully so! Thanks for the videos on these guitars!
+Kyle Moody Yes. The room we shot each of these Gruhn episodes in was George's original "uber-rare-prototype-room" where he stored his PERSONAL collection of prototype instruments & non-production model guitars, banjos, etc. It was truly an honor to shoot in this room with him! Please make sure to Subscribe if you haven't already & Thanks for Watching! Stay Tuned! Sincerely, The Musician Network (TMNtv)
+THE MUSICIAN NETWORK (TMNtv) That frankly sounds awesome. The history in those instruments is just amazing. I love the Gruhn show, I've rewatched every episode at least twice. keep up the good work🙂
I own a 1958 Les Paul Custom just like George was showing. It is in excellent condition with the original Gibson hard case. Would consider $45,000 and no less.
I am just VERY picky and VERY cautious and being dirt poor my whole life I have HAD to take very good care of the things I've owned so I cringe when I see a guitar that has to cost $100,000 get banged or scraped etc. He's obviously not deliberately trashing it. But if it was me, I'd be like OH, NOOOO, you can't play this one! Not without these gloves on. HAHHAHAHA
Their needs to be minimal to no editing. I truly appreciate your efforts of making these videos but when George talks about something interesting, the video cuts out. For e.g. when he is speaking about how today's pick-ups are high impedance compared to low impedance vintage pup's etc... It would have been interesting to get his views but instead it gets edited out. Don't be afraid of the video being long, the longer the better.
+STRATMAN firdaus Hey STRATMAN, thanks for your comment and for watching! We are working with George, now, in preparation for shooting Season #3 of the Show! Trust Us, we will be incorporating many NEW elements into the new season - so, all we can say is = Stay Tuned! Sincerely, The Musician Network (TMNtv)
It's an instrument. Sort of a tool. It's made to use, it's been used before and hopefully will be used in the future. Let it live, evolve, get some dings and dungs ...
My prediction concerning the dollar value of these vintage guitars is that the prices are going to totally nosedive in the next couple of decades. The reason being is that kids today have no interest at all with the musicians of the past and the instruments that they played. They not only don't buy records, but they don't even listen to music, especially music that involves people playing real instruments.
David DeQuasie David, First of all - Thanks for Watching & for Your Comment. You might be right but we hope you're wrong....not simply for these rare, vintage instruments to hold their monetary value but for our youth to learn to appreciate them & the music they made. We hope to be a conduit for that to happen. Thanks again for Watching, please make sure to Subscribe if you haven't already & Stay Tuned! Sincerely, The Musician Network (TMNtv)
David DeQuasie All we can both do is show them that true musicianship is a combination of inspiration, creativity, melody and meaning - all rolled into one - that can be expressed in a myriad of ways. Just "Three notes" does not, in & of themselves, "make a song" but they could with the right combination of the other necessary ingredients. A very large part of the problem truly is the huge impact of technology (iPhones, iPads & the like) making music-making so simple.....why learn to play a guitar when you can touch a colored cell on an iPhone....right?
Stratman firdaus: Thanks for your interest, however I have set $45K as my bottom price otherwise one day my grandson will inherit the Black Beauty. If you are interested at 45 I'll send you very detail photo's.
Vintage Gibson and Fender guitars are IMHO the most overrated and overpriced guitars ever made. I could easily get a skilled Luthier to make me a close approximation (that would fool most people) for a $1000 bucks.
Thank you Mr. Gruhn, for your valuable time. We guitar aficionados are grateful.
The 3 pickups les Paul is an awesome looking guitar.
One of the most concise and informative guitar videos I've ever seen. Well done!
Same here.
We need to listen them plugged. WE NEEEEED!
Greuhn is the best their website is a must for any guitar lovers.
Les Paul Custom is one of the most beautiful guitars ever made in my opinion.
That’s why they call it a black beauty
LOVE this video George. ... I look forward to soaking up more of your impressive knowledge. ... subscribed!
Sorry but 7min vid of these beautiful guitars and you don't even fire one up??? WTH??

playing these for your tests next season would be a dream job

love the series, please do more :)
these videos are really informative thanks you so much
Great video! I also have some Gibson Les Paul reviews available. Would love to have a classic custom such as these.

no problem. taker easy!
Excellent stuff
George Gruhn has done mighty well too.
I love the way he says "plaaaastic" with a disgust when talking about the inlays:-)
George did the written appraisal on my 59 telecaster back in 1987.
I need to hear them. I NEEEED.
When did Gibson switch from an all Mahogany body on the LP Custom to a Mahogany/Maple top?
George kicks ass!
Never understood why the middle switch was not just the middle pickup
CaribSurfKing1 it would cause a 60cycle hum, the relationship of the magnetic fields of the "close in pick-ups" on each side. kinda' like when you'd be onstage in a bar with a single coil and a nearby neon beer sign makes you spend the whole gig standing sideways...lol
The Peter Frampton version of the Black Beauty Custom Les Paul is wired for all three pick-ups in the middle position.

@@maxsignori7660 thank you very kindly Max. ... finally I understand
@@markmarsh27 you're welcome!
How much is the '53 LP worth?
Not as much as a 59. Go figure...
3 little letters: P A F
i believe van gogh sold one painting. STILL A SHOCK THOUGH! since he is considered one of the most influential if not the most influential artist of modern times.
Thanx... me favorites

+Human Steve Don't be fooled by the all the hype. There are some reissues that are much better than the old vintage models.
Yeah, I admit, I do buy into the mystique.. And I hope to get one of those reissues soon! Years from now they may be much more than we think!
Is that a fretless banjo in the back?
+Kyle Moody Yes. I own a 1958 Les Paul Custom just like George was showing. It is in excellent condition with the original Gibson hard case.
Would consider $45,000 and no less.
+Richard Jack Would you consider $44,000?
I love that '55 ! A bargain at £24,433 , not that I can afford it lol 😊👍
What explanation?
Wise words. Erudite eloquence.
Your incorrect Van Gogh sold Red Vineyard at Arles painting while he was alive
Players - If you could own one of these Customs, which one would it be and why?
The one with two pickups
ditto!
The three pup custom, is extremely rare and sexy as hell. But, each to their own.
Is there a George Gruhn in the World of Vintage amps?
I'll take the '55. Send it on as soon as you box it up.
I'm certain there's a conspiracy among vintage dealers to wear as many rings as possible to put us on edge.
I'm saving up for something a bit newer.
I am just VERY picky and VERY cautious and being dirt poor my whole life I have HAD to take very good care of the things I've owned so I cringe when I see a guitar that has to cost $100,000 get banged or scraped etc. He's obviously not deliberately trashing it. I hope that I'm wrong as well, but I've been teaching kids music for over 35 years. The changes are shocking and I truly feel sorry for these kids.

It hasn't affected the vintage car market. Collectible cars will always be collectible and usually appreciate in value.

Hey George, caution!!your ring scraths this beautiful body!!!
hey George...can I borrow 10.00 bucks?
Every time this "expert" smacks the body with his rings I cringe.
well he is THE expert. He wrote the book (literally) on buying and selling vintage guitars
quonsar ....couldn’t agree more. I just posted the same exact thing. Ugh.
Connor Selby ...there are countless “experts”. George is a dealer. Really, that’s about it. He’s knowledgeable about his wares. No more, no less.
He better not be wearing a huge cowboy belt buckle.
quonsar I’ve seen this comment before. Shut up
George... lose the rings and watch. Have some respect. I’m tired of hearing you click against them
sort of guitar player who just tells a story, but doesnt play
Please don't compare these factory-made instruments to a Van Gogh.
Schlumbucket Returns better compared to an Andy Warhol, after all his art was made in a factory.
Dull
