I see this song in 4 parts. The beginning is the drug enticing the addict into using. The melodic change is the high the user experiences. Then it picking up tempo is the crash of coming down. The last part of the song is the drug letting the user that it's in control now.

The synopsis of the song is this.....the drug is the master and the user is the puppet. Look at the album cover art, the hands in the upper corners are the drug and the strings for the puppets are in the graves. "Master, Master where's the dreams I've been after?"

Go down the rabbit hole that is Metallica! I promise you won’t regret it! The first melodic solo is the addict getting their fix. The harder one is them needing their fix again. Metallica are masters at music writing! They are known for very deep lyrics that James always manages to write in such a way that are very personal to him yet just vague enough for the listener to interpret them to their own lives and experiences.

Welcome to heavy metal, fellow GenXer! Boy, you have an amazing journey ahead of you. Metal has several subgenres - some you'll love, some you'll possibly hate. Not all metal is the same, but there is something for everyone. Seriously. Love classical music? Symphonic metal is for you. Into rap? Nu-metal or rapcore just might be your thing. Like pirates? Pirate metal exists, my friend. I'm not kidding. Death metal, power metal, thrash, groove and speed metal. And countless others! So much to explore, so much to love!
And, as an added bonus, you'll soon find that many of the best metal bands are from Europe.
Since you indicated you were into rap back in the days, I gotta ask - ever listened to any Rage Against the Machine? They were solidly in GenXers young adult years (early 90s). They have a lot of metal elements in their music, along with rap, some punk, etc.
Anyway, I'm happy to help you out on your journey. If any of the above categories intrigued you, let me know and I'll give you some good recommendations to get you started.
In the mean time, check out this live Metallica performance from Moscow, 1991, just before the collapse of the USSR. There are around 1.5 MILLION (yes, you read that right) people in attendance!

Hey dude, if that was a for real first reaction video to Metallica it was a real one. And I can totally relate. I was 52 when I started listening to Metallica. I was a little bit of a metalhead in high school and I listened o iron Maiden Judas priest ACDC. But then I went to college and New Wave was around and deep dance and then techno and rap and grunge and then I got married and I discovered whole new genres of music that I loved. My wife and I saw nine inch nails Green Day Foo fighters Mumford & sons jidenna Kendrick Lamar Muse RL Burnside. But my life really hit a shity spot and I decided to go outside and listen to a Metallica concert for the first time. By lucky chance, I wound up choosing Seattle 1989. I was so blown away I started listening to their entire catalog but I had only made it through two albums when I decided to look for concert tickets. My wife as of yet didn't know them really at all. She would learn to love them too though not as much as me. She did buy me the s&m two concert and three other albums on colored vinyl though. We saw them live in Houston in 2017. F†*********************k!!!!!!!!!!
If I can offer any assistance to a guy more or less my age I'd be happy to share what songs and albums and concerts and footage and whatever to watch because at this point I've watched hundreds of their concerts many of them probably hundreds of times. I watch reactions and I have never despite my wide range of interest in music heard anybody who comes close to holding my interest consistently in a new ways the way this band does. The f****** talent is off the hook the lyrics touch me and make me cry in the middle of a metal song. Since my wife passed unexpectedly last year the song Nnothing Else Matters has become my personal anthem - not only for the way we lived together and the way we both thought, but now is my way of recognizing her life with our dog Pedro. Everyday for us something new.
And like many others, I had a period of depression in there and Fade to Black was my personal life at the time. And while that song didn't save me, listening to the perfection of the music and the fact that these guys who are my age could do that, gave me hope and inspiration.
What did save me, to no small degree, were those really really hard songs and those really really meaningful lyrics and the unceasing angst and anger of James's voice,. That allowed me to channel out the anger and frustration that was keeping me in the place I was at.
I don't feel quite the same emotional attachment now because of the circumstances of my life and the fact that I'm not depressed at the moment. But I still listen to them every time I go for a 30 mi bike ride through the mountains in upstate New York. Battery will get me up the steepest hill.
And every time I get pissed at something, these guys are there to let me take out my anger through their voices and their music.
And if you have mother issues ... Het
    fields your Man.
And if you like heavy. Do you like heavy? Do you want heavy? Metallica gives you heavy baby..

Wow what a journey you took. Thank you for sharing it with me. I am 51 and I was sort of sheltered in high school I listened to mostly nwa and stuff like that. When I moved away to college I really got into more of pop. I’m loving this so far. I relistened to the Metallica song several times now. I can’t wait to listen to more.

There are different sub genres of metal. The cookie monster stuff is Metalcore, Death Metal, etc. This is thrash metal and this genre usually has good vocals. I'm not into the Cookie Monster crap either. Just curious as to what you grew up listening to. I'm Gen X as well, but I was onto Metallica since the first album, which came out when I was 16. But I like everything from classic rock to prog to jazz fusion.
