Instead of going for the fast food only, try the slow food. Mučkalica, goulash, paprikaš, different soups like čorba, stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls, oven baked beans (prebranac), bean soup (čorbast pasulj), fish soup, cabbage stew etc. And last, the letter c is pronounced like zz in pizza, so Bucko is pronounced Butsko. J is like y in you.
We really wished we had more time to try the more traditional foods. That all sounds amazing! We will definitely have to return to Serbia to enjoy all of the slow cooking 😊

Some things you have to try, to understand Serbian cuisine, like things we grew up with and things we eat every day, in my opinion are veal soup, army beans (pasulj), sarma and some type of slow cooked beef dish like oxtail or goulash or shank in kaymak.

You should try Sarma, it is our best winter meal, it is minsed meat (beff and pork) with rise and spices, wraped in sour cabage leaves, cooked in low heat, for couple of hours.. We usualy eat it in winter, but you can find it in restourants always, even in summer. Very delicious! 👌👌👍👍
You should try "teletina ispod sača". It's veal prepared on coals under a metal shield to create a medieval oven. I don't know Belgrade restaurants, but I'm sure someone can suggest a place.

The best place for burek in Serbia is your nearest bakery... bakery in your neborhood. If it is Trpkovic, for example, then lucky you. If not, every burek will be just fine for breaskfast as long as it is fresh and hot. Nobody will start his car and drive half an hour to by a burek.
Try veal corba, fried cheese, Karadjordjeva snitzla, veal or pork medallions in mushroom sauce, sopa or tarator salad and some dessert with walnuts and/or slaw or some cream

Domestic Banica or Gibanica is made from hand made pasta ( you spread pasta over table in one large peace , and put cheese and you roll that 🌀 For Burek , you put layers of pasta , like lasagna 😁

Serbia has been known for Šljivovica brandy since medieval times. The plum plant used to make brandy has been planted since ancient times. It's just a little stronger than standard Western drinks. E.g. Whiskey has 38% alcohol, while Brandy has between 50 and 54% alcohol!
It was a mostly savory food experience in Serbia 😆 but we did have some very good baklava! Really anywhere in the Balkans has amazing baklava, not just Greece and Türkiye 😁
You should come to Pancevo and try burek from Stankoski burek. My recommendation is Burek kolenica, also there is with chicken. This 2 you have to try.
Few more places where you can eat the best burek in Blegrade are pekara Rankovic (also they have very good bbq, in Krusevacka street and the other one is in Maksima Gorkog street and the other pekara also in Maksima Gorkog street accross Kalenic open market) , pekara Kircanski, pekara Crvena Zvezda (but I heard that the owner, the old man, passed away, do not know is it true) and pekara Alek at Dorcol (but I haven't been there recently). Rankovic also have the best wanuts strudel. I recommend. Also you MUST visit pekara Aca. pastry and sweets. It's in the city center, Svetogorska street.
as for the cheese in the burek...in the burek goes cheese of poorer quality, cheaper, with less milk fat. Now imagine what kind of cheese we consider to be high-quality? That's the kind of cheese we use at home.

You will find out why when you come to İstanbul. Because its in the center of events.

It does wonders with the flavor and also it makes it easier for you to diggest and kinda helps with the fat, to dissolve it a bit.. But people have a taste of yogurt on its own, ohh we dont like it and just eat the burek.. Its like having a meaty lunch without the salad and rakija first.. Man.. And after a few days OMG i gained weight OMG you eat too much meat and cheese and fat foods that is not healthy.. Eat the entire meal in steps, like it should be done. Hundreds of years of experience have crafted it that way and every little step has its purpose.

Best burek ( burek mean with meet ) is in Bosnia. And cevapi. This is Bosnian food. Best pleskavica is in Serbia.

You drink bad rakija, good rakija is never served cold. Try real food but must go in Nis or Pirot for that. Just ask for special. Food in Belgrade is overpriced and undertasted 😊😊😊

The thing is Balkans is just a small region on the crossroads. It is expected that you have a mix of other influences. Balkan states are not isolated islands, they are not so unique and special like they think they are when it comes to their cuisine.
go to Leskovac city of grill and paprika. dont eat our grill meat without bread,its odd. just ask there for whatever. u will see. its not even a joke. but go for Dzigerica,Leskovacka muckalica,gravce na tavce or just normal mixed grill meat for 2 persons. its gonna be awesome anyways.
