Wow, Brad said a lot that can apply to so many aspects of life. That bit about being unhappy in the journey makes you unable to be happy even at the dream destination really made me rethink my attitude.
Best advice I got as I drove myself through school, through post-secondary, through successful positions of increasing importance... given by a friend... was "You always say you'll be happy when you do X, but when you get to X, you might be happy for a few days, then it becomes you being happy when you do Y, and the pattern repeats. If you can't find a way to enjoy the journey, you'll never be happy because there will always be 'another goal' before you can be happy, no matter how many goals you succeed at. I kind of sensed that had merit when he said it, then a few years after it sunk in a bit more. Now, maybe 20-25 years later, I live my life and make my choices very differently because of that. I love and am grateful for where I am, despite the massive challenges in my life in and my family's lives. Love the good things in your life and be grateful. It makes you happier and more able to give your best to the world and to those you care about. It's a simple lesson, but if you were always following expectations from parents and other adults and just took it into yourself to drive yourself harder than they did and to always be pushing for a goal to be allowed to be happy, it takes a while to settle, but then you have to rethink your whole sense of how you live. You have to give yourself permission to be happy where you are. Focusing on what you have to be grateful for and accepting that the next goal target may never happen (life throws nasty curve balls) are big steps in regaining happiness and mental wellbeing.
I felt the same way. It's universal. I think I've found my own balance between doing a career I'm good at and makes me good money, and doing the things I enjoy on the side with that money.
I've given up on happiness years ago.... It's fairly relieving. Since then I've figured if you can't be happy ya might as well be rich. So far I'm not rich either tho lol
I am 80+, and it was way past my bedtime when I started to watch this interview tonight. I had to stay up and watch it to the end, and because it was so interesting and illuminating, I then had to stay up until the light of dawn to write and express my appreciation for their willingness to share their wisdom with us. I come from the other side of the professional world, in that I was a professional pilot all my life, but I was always a huge fan of all forms of comedy, with my favourites being standup, and improv comics. There is so much wisdom in what Colin and Brad shared in this video, that at times I had to marvel that they knew the secret of life. I am a retired professional pilot, and in my job, you either had to love the job, or you couldn't survive at it, and Brad described that feeling perfectly when he was talking about finding success If you don't, or can't, enjoy the journey to success, then the ride will eventually grind a person into the ground. The other secret he shared, that to enjoy wherever a person is on the journey, is also a wonderfully wise observation. We only get one run through this life, so it is pointless to be in a place that tortures our soul. Going back to the 70s, I have treasured the times when I watched Whose Line, and the other shows, with SCTV. I still, happily watch the youtubes of Whose Line regularly and still enjoy all the skits, even though I have seen many of them a number of times. My favourites are, the Film noire skits and the scenes from a hat, but I loved them all. The skit with Richard Simmonds, was priceless, but there were many that came very close to that level. Thank you for the joy you all have given me.
I proposed on stage to my wife (girl friend at the time) at a Collin and Brad show 7 years ago, and she said yes of course (lots of people watching haha). I set it all up with their managers before hand once she surprised me with tickets, they truly are some of best people you will ever meet, they pulled strings to get us in the front row and they played if off the whole time as a double booking accident with our seats when we showed up. They met up with us after the show to take pictures after a very funny dance sketch we did with them and the proposal. Really they are great people and should have a lot more respect and praise, true masters of their art. BTW these dudes are insanely tall, I am 6' tall and they made me feel like a dwarf.
I am only about 25 minutes in, but I am loving this! It's great to get to know them as real people, not just in character and "on". They're both giving such good advice, too!
I honestly can't decide between Colin and Ryan; but Wayne Brady had the most accumulative points throughout the show. Over 50 billion points, while Ryan has just over 11 billion, and Colin has 5 billion, I think. I have no idea if that's actually true, I just heard it on one of those "Top 10 facts you didn't know about..." videos.
Brad is an excellent speaker, if he doesn't I think he should teach classes. Great video even for non- arts students, I really enjoy seeing behind the curtain, thank you.

Wow! Definitely was not disappointed when I met Colin. He came over to the table, sat down, and we had a quiet conversation about making commercials. During the filming for that particular one, he used his improv skills to great advantage. How many people do you know can ask for - and get - a ladder and a raw steak to feed to a robo-wolf, then gather an audience and garner laughs while doing just that? Long Live Colin Mochrie!

I had the pleasure of meeting Colin and Brad after one of their shows. They were just as real and unassuming as they were in this video. Totally authentic, not phony.
Enjoying the journey, from Brad, was so deep and enlightening. That advice should carry into whatever a person's dream is. Have joy in the "failures", because it's all part of life. You learn most when you're on the ground looking up.
Thank you New York Film Academy for doing this interview. I've always loved "Whose Line" since I discovered it around 1999 or 2000 and it was great to hear the inside scoop from legends like Brad and Colin.
You know I don't understand how some people can dislike certain videos. It just astounds me. This was very informative in my opinion. I guess you really can't please everyone.
I love all the Whose Line cast, and Brad and Colin are surely exquisitely talented. I watch as many episodes as I can find, some are in syndication, but they never grow old. The genius behind improv is amazing to me. Bless you both, loved the interview. Hope to see you keep doing what you doing for a long time to come❤❤
Why I spent my entire life doing singing telegrams is exactly what Brad Sherwood is talking about to me. The saying if you love what you do you never work a day in your life comes to mind, and as far as Colin, don't forget to smell the roses as far as his response to that same question. Having a life in entertainment means nothing if you don't do it for the right reasons. It's not for fame or fortune. Those things are not guaranteed. It's for the love of the work. It's brain work for sure, just not considered the type of brain work that people consider smarts, but it takes alot of work to build your brain to work that way in the first place. Bravo gentleman.
I'm loving this interview, and seeing a glimpse into the "real" Brad and Colin, because I'd wondered what they were like when not on stage in their group. Thank you for sharing this with all of us non-actors.
I love how down to Earth these guys are, and how they dont seem to realize how many people love their work. So humble! I see them as some of the best comedians ever! Would love to see them be hired to do voice over improv in an animated movie! How sad the process to be hired is made harder than it has to be.
I used to think Brad was one of my least favorite guys on the show, since my friend always said he didn't like him and I just kind of developed the same dislike from that. However, after watching how insightful he is as an actor and as a person here, I really respect him a lot more. He's way funnier and smarter than people give him credit for.
Drew's comedy worked great with the group he was with... just his laugh alone was hilarious. I also love hearing that he went to improv shows and actually worked at improving that skill. I know it's frowned upon to say this, but I so wish he could have come back for the new season. Sometimes you just get that once in a lifetime group, and Drew was surely an important part of that group. Regardless, I am so thankful to all of them for all the laughter. 🖤
I had the honor of seeing these two live on 9/29/2018 (Scared Scriptless). I know the date because I have the ticket on my fridge. Absolutely incredible. Really great interview. 🤟
Awesome wisdom-dump from two elder statesmen of the craft. This was what I needed after watching some Whose Line and wondering about Colin Mochrie's real-life personality. Was not disappointed! And pleasantly surprised by Brad Sherwood's intellectualism and emotional intelligence. Great video.
I love these guys. I loved the show since the beginning in the UK onwards. It’s so good to hear them talk so generously about Drew and Robin Williams and not simply take the ego polishing that was being offered. Really interesting.
So...... I was watching a bunch of Who's Line stuff and this was the next in line and I was like "not what I was looking forward to but I'll give it a few minutes"... I'm so glad I did. This is now one of my favorite moments on RUclips. They are so real, so honest and still funny as hell. The only regret is no one asked "talk about the Hitler/Cosby episode".
I really like what Brad was talking about at about 25:00 I'm not an actor or anything but I think his advice can be taken with almost any career or lifestyle. For me right now, it's playing guitar. It's something where it's more for the journey of enjoying the music I play and the people I play with rather than aspiring to be a star.
I have hit the same cross-roads many times with many different pursuits. Turns out I'm best at web development, so I make my good money doing that and fund all my other hobbies. Making a career of what you LOVE is sometimes terrible advice. Most people should work at what they're good at, and do what they love on the side. I'm glad you've got the emotional intelligence to find your satisfaction in life.

These two and the entire Whose Line cast was my childhood, one of the few things I found solace in, in my troubled bordering on non-existent childhood. I owe them my life, they literally saved me from killing myself all those years ago.
Articulate. Far more cerebral and analytical than I would have guessed. Really good at assessing the big picture, too. Makes me wonder if he's ever tried his hand at writing.
@@sdraper2011 I don't think that'd be for him; He's been "training", so to speak, in quick, successive, on-the-spot improvisation his whole life, and that isn't of the same substance as writing. Ryan Stiles once did an interview in which he summarized his whole comedic life, and expressed a few times how bad he was at writing material compared to his improvisation skills. I think that Brad Sherwood's best work is done when it comes instinctively, not over long periods of time that give him too much time to contradict himself.
Never realised how introverted they both are, but not surprised as is the case with a lot of good comedians. This is the 1st time I've actually seen them not performing cheers for the vid
That's one of the chief reasons I try not to judge addicts too harshly in general, but after hearing him talk about it that way, that impulse is now doubled for celebrities; I've said for a long time no one starts using drugs *intending* to become an addict. The harsh judgements come when the addict refuses to accept help.
@Devon Crusader Drug use runs rampant through all economic levels, not just the impoverished. For a lot of rich or famous people, it's a way to cope with the demands of being famous. It's also a popular coping method for people who are depressed and would rather self-medicate than admit they have a mental disorder. It's also not uncommon for drugs to be pushed on rich and famous people by well-meaning but clueless assistants and managers.
@@Dargonhuman what well-meaning person pushes drugs on someone? But otherwise it's true. Drugs are in all SES the main difference between celebrities becoming addicts and those in poverty doing so is that the latter have less access to healthcare/alternative outlets and celebrities are surrounded by people trying to push drugs on them and/or form dependencies to siphon their money and resources.
He's wrong about that though. Being an actor doesn't lead to substance abuse and sucicide; the psychology that makes you want to be an actor and to be desperate for attention and fame and adulation is also the psychology that leads to depression and substance abuse and suicide. These people would have substance abuse issues even if they weren't actors.
Last year for my birthday, my husband got me a Cameo by Colin and made mention that we'd be in the front row at their live Scared Scriptless show. In the Cameo Colin alluded that I might be called up but I never thought it would happen in a million years. I was wrong. He called me up and he and Brad sang to me. They made me feel so comfortable even though I was nervous. At the end, I got to hug them both!! BTW I'm only 4'11" so it was a stretch, literally. But worth every second. I have it on video and know the song by heart. Now my husband knows to get me Colin cameos for gifts!
That warmed my heart. Especially the part, where Colin's wife should sprinkle Colin's ashes on the people, who didn't believe in him. Also, "to make the others look worse" by not cracking up explains really well for me, why Colin doesn't laugh that much. I wonder what he would say about the episode with his sixpack...
Yes, that explanation for why he didn't lose it as much made shows like the infamous "Meow" and the bird saying "Backstreet Boys" make so much more sense.
I just love seeing how others' lives play out and how they reflect on themselves. Just learning about people can cultivate my perspective on my own life. It makes sense: all people have their own niche(s) in life, which eventually connect them with other people, because you can't go through life without bumping into others and forming relationships with them. These relationships are why your niches (or "purposes" or "qualities") matter to you, because they matter to others. Brad and Colin emphasized this in their discussion.
Been following Who's Line, since Clive Anderson hosted ❤️ These guys are the best. Masters even 💛💛 I always want to play too ❤️ that's when you know it's good! Makes you want to play and join in ❤️ just riffing and making people laugh, what joy!
There are a lot of life lessons in this, not just for actors. Glad I gave in and watched it, because they are right: you have to be happy with the journey to your goals! I think that is the difference between a person who survives and a person who lives. I survive unhappily, but I have never really lived.
I have learned not EVERYTHING is my fault! Not even in my own life. Not my fault I was raped, not my fault I had a terrible family... yada yada boring stuff, but like 2/3 of the guilt I felt is gone! I'm not trying to protect the people who hurt me between 5 and 13 anymore! I had forgotten I had left this comment, but coming back to it I am not sorry if it helped even one other person have a better day. There is the added bonus that I can see how much healthier I am now than when I left the original.
What Brad said about Greatest Hits explains how Chip and Wayne said "Woouhoo" at the same time before. So it was less of a rare coincidence. So now my theories that the Whose LIne was scripted are gone.
I know this comment was a year ago, but I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING. When anyone questions the legitimacy of the improv on WLIIA, I ALWAYS bring up that The Police segment and say, 'If they knew they were going to do it at the same time, as any band would do in usual circumstances, then why would they have laughed so hard at the surprise of it?' I sincerely wish I had these guys' talent. Not in acting, but in real life experiences.
@@Seriona1 If you look at the outtakes some of the stuff was funny as hell but wouldn't make it past the tv censors. It legitimately was unscripted. I always wondered myself but after seeing those outtakes it makes it so much better.

What they were saying about what they would like to tell their youngest selves reminded me of what another actor said above the same thing. He said people always tell you that life is short, so you don’t miss out on opportunities but he had started to tell himself that life is long so he took more time to enjoy what he was doing while he was living it , making time for the important things, pacing himself so the pressure didn’t get too much and he could be present and enjoy the great life he was getting to live. Same sort of advice, a strong message.
loved colins stuttering^^ no, but this was really informative and amazing! I love that they basically just talked throughout the whole interview and really got to open up near the end :)
I met both Brad and Colin before a show in 2014. Colin was very shy and seemed uncomfortable - but, friendly. Brad was fairly outgoing and we shared some laughs.
I have loved them both, so damn funny. Every time I've seen who's line is it anyway. I'm glad they did this discussion and I hope that the students really listened to what they were saying. I have to admit, it is amazing to say how different they are in this setting. I really do expect them to just have it all together like everything in life is no big deal, and you find out that not only are they just like everyone else (which should be obvious but they are that good at comedy that we forget) and that when out of their element its a bit intimidating. I'm glad they shared that piece.
yes, and that was awesome! Thank you. I grew up with Who's Line in South Africa in the 90's. It had a major impact on my interaction with other people and these guys - and Drew, Wayne and Ryan - definitely have a place on my list of heroes.
@@O-.-O Brad is calling out sexism; not rewarding it. He spells it out and everything. He says that if society would ostricize someone for exhibiting a certain trait, the individual (because of gender-based biases) will abandon certain qualities in favor of others as a matter of survival. He's saying it like it is. Society and its views on women are the problem. Not the women themselves
Love LOVE LOVE this interview. BTW, at the 51:00 mark, talking about Robin William's guest appearance on the show: TOTALLY AGREE. As good as he was, and the genius he was, he didn't hold a candle to Ryan, Collin and Wayne & the flow that they had with each other. IMHO he was fantastic but he was at his best on his own.

I really like what Brad was talking about at about 25:00
I'm not an actor or anything but I think his advice can be taken with almost any career or lifestyle.
I'm glad you've got the emotional intelligence to find your satisfaction in life.
thats fab i play to and i agree, how long u been playing i well check out your yt if you have videos there or where?? And whats jrg??
@@Selfemployedmildautisticperfor the JRG is just extra letters to make my username unique. I just go by Graham. Haven't made a lot of content for RUclips, I mostly play guitar just for my own enjoyment now. But that doesn't count out anything in the future that might be
These two and the entire Whose Line cast was my childhood, one of the few things I found solace in, in my troubled bordering on non-existent childhood. I owe them my life, they literally saved me from killing myself all those years ago.
Oh my goodness, i hope things are alot better for you now! Im glad you at least had these guys to help get you through!
Aw, Sabrin, always find laughter in your life. God bless. Enshallah.
Brad is so damn intense in real life.....i'm not used to that, lol
Mick Mcnabb its sexy as hell tbh
@@kevinplak549 Those are good points but I was thinking of writing in general, not comedy writing.
sdraper2011 if you start to notice people that shoot from the hip have a very difficult time putting words on paper.
Wow, thank you for posting this. I am amazed at these two performers. I’m a big Whose Line fan, and I’d love to see the guys in concert sometime.
Never realised how introverted they both are, but not surprised as is the case with a lot of good comedians. This is the 1st time I've actually seen them not performing cheers for the vid
Brad's comments on celebrity addiction were profound
@Devon Crusader why would you not?
@@Dargonhuman what well-meaning person pushes drugs on someone?
But otherwise it's true. Drugs are in all SES the main difference between celebrities becoming addicts and those in poverty doing so is that the latter have less access to healthcare/alternative outlets and celebrities are surrounded by people trying to push drugs on them and/or form dependencies to siphon their money and resources.
When Brad mentioned that they don't see Ryan often Colin looked a little sad.
my heart broke a little on that one.
@lelwut He just seems like an opinionated person. Not crazy lol. Only crazy from your (likely conservative) point of view.
Colin wishes he was doing the tour with Ryan instead
@lelwut Yes, because his anti-Trump stance and love of animals make him a crazy leftist... You people are funny
@lelwut oh no, you called me a Commie, whatever will I do? 🙃
I'm actually using what Brad said about famous people getting hooked on drugs in an English essay. Yes, I am citing the source.
I used what he said about famous people getting hooked on drugs, to get hooked on drugs.

I could die happy if Brad sang to me and Colin Cameo'd me.
This is not an either/or. ;)
Colin is on Cameo. So far, Brad isn't.. I get a Colin Cameo for my birthday from my husband every year. It's my only wish. 🎉❤️💕❤️
Brad Sherwood, the guy who seemed to mess around the most on Whose Line, gave one of the most thoughtful interviews I’ve seen from an actor.
He didn't say 'sprinkle' he said *throw it in their eyes*
God this was excellent. Thank you for posting it online.
These two are amazing performers
Agree, absolutely talented people!!
Been following Who's Line, since Clive Anderson hosted ❤️
These guys are the best.
Masters even 💛💛 I always want to play too ❤️ that's when you know it's good! Makes you want to play and join in ❤️ just riffing and making people laugh, what joy!
I absolutely LOVEEEE that 'tapiooooooooca' moment that Colin was talking about at 58:36!
gosh theyre both so sweet
I wish they would release absolutely.everything that EVER happened on Whose Line.
When anyone questions the legitimacy of the improv on WLIIA, I ALWAYS bring up that The Police segment and say, 'If they knew they were going to do it at the same time, as any band would do in usual circumstances, then why would they have laughed so hard at the surprise of it?'
I sincerely wish I had these guys' talent. Not in acting, but in real life experiences.
Plus everyone who ever been to an actual show all say the same thing, you get to see a lot of failed shit that just doesn't sell.
@@Seriona1 If you look at the outtakes some of the stuff was funny as hell but wouldn't make it past the tv censors. It legitimately was unscripted. I always wondered myself but after seeing those outtakes it makes it so much better.

Hats off to who's line ..laugh so much my body hurt ..great job you guys. I enjoy your talent Colin and Ryan
The Richard Simmons episode is literally the funniest thing I have ever seen. I wish there was a better version available on youtube.
If you can, download the cwseed app to your phone and/or tablet. It has most of the episodes all the way through Aisha Tyler being the host.
This was glorious!
I like Brad and I love Colin on WLIIA?. But,this interview is so interesting. I shouldn't be surprised by how fascinating they are!

What Brad said was so profound...and speaks to my philosophy in life.... if what you aspire to you steals your joy, it is not worth persuing ❤....
I loved brads response to the question of what he would have told himself.
I did not realize that they taped the show over a weekend, that's awesome! That's why their chemistry was so good.
One of my favorite things from the old version is when they needled Drew Cary.
K Kampy younger than I, I actually started with Clive....! Lol, man I’m getting up there, and I’m not that olllllld!.
loved colins stuttering^^
no, but this was really informative and amazing! I love that they basically just talked throughout the whole interview and really got to open up near the end :)
its adorable n also love his goofyness lol
I met both Brad and Colin before a show in 2014. Colin was very shy and seemed uncomfortable - but, friendly. Brad was fairly outgoing and we shared some laughs.
2 legends
Being scared adds another dimension. Wow
it sure is inspiring, thank you for the upload
I have loved them both, so damn funny. Every time I've seen who's line is it anyway. I'm glad they did this discussion and I hope that the students really listened to what they were saying. I have to admit, it is amazing to say how different they are in this setting. I really do expect them to just have it all together like everything in life is no big deal, and you find out that not only are they just like everyone else (which should be obvious but they are that good at comedy that we forget) and that when out of their element its a bit intimidating. I'm glad they shared that piece.
"Do what you love!" What a heartwarming thing to end on. :)
How amazing you are, guys....you are huge inspiration! Big hugs! I love you so much.
Colin being uncomfortable and drinking water, reminds me of "Whose Line: If You Know What I Mean" and him miming drinking coffee.
Don't forget the scene, where he drank his fries.😂

A really great perspective on life.
Thanks Brad and Colin!
Am I the only one that laughed at 47:00 when Colin said " no don't" and then pointed in another direction for a question?
I saw it too haha
At 1:18:08 Brad Sherwood forgot he had already said "ferret" a minute ago at 1:16:59. People really don't record memories when they're improv-ing.
So honestly truthful, it’s so believable and almost inspiring!
The host sounds a little too much like Drew Carey at 19:35 and it scares me
HAH HAH HAH
Colin: _immediately has flashbacks_
yes, and that was awesome! Thank you. I grew up with Who's Line in South Africa in the 90's. It had a major impact on my interaction with other people and these guys - and Drew, Wayne and Ryan - definitely have a place on my list of heroes.
I met Colin Mochrie and his son on a production at Disney - What a super nice man...
I'm always mind boggled by the credits in movies and how many people it takes to make a film..😮
1:10:00 good insights about personality traits and what men vs. women are rewarded for.
Very good stuff for sexist assholes.
@@O-.-O ...Brad was commenting on how men and women wind up growing into different people specifically BECAUSE of the sexism still present in society.
@@O-.-O Of course there's someone like you *facepalm*
both of them are so generous sharing their insights and thoughts. Very funny and very professional. ;)
I never watch movies but I would absolutely make an exception for a film noir with the cast of Whose Line.
Made it to 26:46, (I will watch the rest later) and Brad has blown my mind.
So glad I clicked this video. Got to learn a lot about life and career
A close friend and schoolmate went to N.Y.F.A. that's where he started his film career. It's a badass, feeling (bragging rights, lol) knowing someone in the industry!!
"Life advice with Brad Sherwood" is definitely not what I was expecting when I clicked on the video.
Not that I'm complaining.
Damn growing up on this show was funny... seeing clips after all these years brings back great memories! Collin and Ryan ,hand down did the best job.
