I agree! It's been years since I have when a regular you are of television. Using RUclips and Netflix provide me with a much more control. And when it comes to politics a lot of it is just a big mess. I have views concerning politics but did not actively participate in voting. My life has more than enough adversity and stress in it, as is.
Quit TV in 2018 and felt better couple days in. When I am with friends and their TV is babbling in the background I want to laugh and cry hard at the same time, from a distant view it's ridiculous bs. Sorry for my English btw😂
The one side of politics has fucked things up to bad to just ignore it, if you dont vote dont complain about the outcome .
This is why Chinese chose one political system and anything goes wrong, they blame government and hold them accountable. The government officials are considered as public servant. General public does not fear about police officers. You may found some videos that women beating police officer on street. Awkward!
This cannot be done here in US or Canada, because we elected them instead of selected them.

I pay to not see advertising on youtube. I don't watch TV or listen to commercial radio. I've made it my mission to NOT be subjected to this kind of manipulation.

I believe it is important to block recommended videos also. This can be done with the Firefox addon called Unhook.
Even with all these protections we are not immune to messages in the videos we watch.
I try to be very careful to exclude videos which promote vulgarity, misogyny, racism, and violence, fake information. There is a great deal of violence in the media and I have been more vulnerable to be watching more violent videos than I should. I locked that down but good.
I have found myself hanging onto channels that have posted clearly false information in one of their videos. To me, it destroys the credibility of the outlet. Now, I am very careful to block or otherwise avoid such outlets.
Media with a great deal of sensationalism I also avoid like the plague. Of course, this is a great deal of the media we see recommended to us.

The most effective manipulation IMO is the coopting of a song. Many classic rock songs have been ruined for me because of this.
This is basic level nowadays. It’s much more deeper in reality. That is also the reason why this video is visible and ok to watch today.

When I get an advert, I look away. If I mistakenly see an advert for something, I make a mental note not to buy it even if I was actually gonna buy the thing. It is my campaign against advertising and consumerism.

Kind of idiotic. You’re still letting the media manipulate you by letting it ruin your view of something, it’s no different to being manipulated normally.
I'd say it depends. I went and watch a show I now love becuase of an ad for the show. But if I see the same ad over, and over again, or one thats really annoying, I make physical notes not to buy their product. I no longer have cable, why should I pay to watch commercials? And some ads are actually PSAs, and they can have really powerful statements to make.
This is exactly what people need to see right now

I only buy what I need and not what I want. Therefore, media doesn't manipulate me. I still drive 15 y.o. car, wear clothes that are over 20 years except socks and underwear.
I wish I could, my shirts get stained from deodorant stains, I sweat too much easily.
Wow, discounting cues that make you dismiss a message get forgotten, but the repetition of a message gets you to believe it, as the motivation and emotion to resist the message subsided and the repeated message sticks anyway.

Actually if you are smart you may play a bit with some ideas and bring up things in different perspectives to create wider perspectives and often it has to be a liitle bit provocating to open up things to write about but you know what you are watching can never be objective. Even not a documentary is objective. Its edited in a certain way, its fortold in a certain way. Often I see video with the icon that someone claims something to make a clickbait or a video and that clip never comes up or that people said the words but the context of it was totally different. Maybe just refering to something or someone or was ironic and some smart humour. And its super funny and interesting because you learn so much about how people work but if you would been brought up in a way that everything you see is true and never learned about how media actually rules your life and you dont even understand it.
These days I'm more critical of people that complain about "mainstream media" all the time, than of said media itself. All too often it is used synonymously with "media I don't like".

Media like politics gives you the illusion of choice. Their messages are carefully crafted for our consumption . People don’t realize they’re being manipulated by their emotions as black magic. Anger hate, and vitriol , are the strongest emotions to move you . They will tell you exactly how to feel . Oddly though, humans have a bad track record when it comes to working with outside groups. racisms, nazi’s just to name a few but lots more examples if you look. It’s almost like this feature is used to create the idea of a society that works through media as a way to change our perception of the world we live in.
