  • Sa'be is an Ojibwe word for Bigfoot. One of the conspicuously many terms for something that supposedly doesn't exist. Context of Ojibwe culture is imperative to understand the place that Sa'be held in the First Nation People's world.

as a first nations person. i can give some insight as to why Sa'be might be "Honesty."
because, the wild men of north america, unlike humans, dont pretend to be anything. they just... Live, in tune with nature and their surroundings, much in the way, most indigenous people here, aspire to live.

That was my line of thinking too. They just have no reason to mask their intentions. They might still do bad things like steal from you or hurt you, since all living beings are concerned with their own survival, but they never hide their intent.
They're always abundantly clear and upfront about what they intend to do before they do it. Sometimes that intent might be positive, sometimes it's negative, but they never hide what they mean when they have a message to give.

My thoughts exactly. I put it like this. Sa Be uses nothing to live. No "things". It's just able to live. I know many natives believe the bear to be our ancestor or brother. This is for similar reasons along with his strength

Could it be that the Ojibwe believed the Hairy People incapable of deceit? I've heard it suggested that (as a shamanic archetype, at least) the Hairy People are impeccably truthful by nature, thus they were regarded as the most trustworthy of messengers.

Seems possible the "Stiff-legged Bear" could be a cultural memory of the Giant Short-faced Bear we know their ancestors must have encountered on their journey to the Americas. They have very long limbs for a bear. And the "Water Panther" could be referring to Jaguars, which can live in surprisingly varied environments and roamed a much larger territory in antiquity. Jaguars are also the most water-tolerating of any of the big cats and have been filmed swimming to catch their prey. Just a thought. Love your videos, man!

    Mr. Gymlan,
Thank you for your contributions! I stumbled across the BF world as a deliberate flight from reality due to a chronic pain condition. Admitting how many hours I've spent reading articles, watching videos and listening to eyewitness testimony would be embarrassing if it weren't for the grains of truth I've come upon.
My mother is a private investigator and I trained with her for many years as well as serving as assistant in many of her cases. During a particularly painful and extended bout of pain I really hit the books and Internet and there is definitely something here.
Even if this is a fiction the societal aspect is fascinating on its own. That so many people across so many walks of life have encountered this species either in or near the remote wilderness is incredible....no matter which side you land on.
Biology professors often say that when we find new species, they tend to be closely related to the familiar. Well, that's what's been reported!
    Thank You,

I just noticed something very interesting that you might’ve missed Bob, the bison is represented in one of their teachings, but the traditional bison range ended around the same original territory of the Ojibwe, meaning that of course they knew about bison but they didn’t encounter them on a typical basis, the same could be said for Sasquatch as it could mean that it was just general knowledge that they existed like the bison even though they may have not interacted regularly, idk someone can correct me but I thought it was kinda interesting

Bison and Buffalo are often used interchangeably in language today.
      I've always been taught Buffalo.
Because the whole Buffalo is used in daily life and is very important to live - we look to Buffalo to teach us respect. He offers his life up so that we may live. He does not make his life any less than yours. It makes it more. Learn respect and balance. And only take what you need.

We traded for Buffalo robes. The Odawa are extensive water travelers and traded with many people. The world itself they say means traders, but it’s more than that. The o always refers to the heart, not as just as a physical organ tho, but a concept. Our word that gets translated as warrior, Ogitchida, means “big hearted ones”.

@@BillysThreat You may have been taught buffalo, and I don't mean to bog you down or be annoying. But for all technical purposes the Animals that are found in North America, and sparsely in Europe, are the ones that are technically called Bison. And the more cow like ones that are found in Africa, India, and South-east Asia are technically agreed on as Buffalo.
Ya know Bison are often called Buffalo, but Buffalo are never called Bison.

I'd heard of Bagwajiwininiwag (or other spellings) before on my research into Ojibwe Wendigo mythology in before and noted that while some westerners confuse (and blanket mythologize) Sasquatch, Yeti, and Wendigo together while the Ojibwe distinguished between them. On a mythological level, Wendigo may be the counter (or Sin) version of the Honesty of Sabe. I've also had this hypothesis that, during harsh winters with little food, a Sasquatch could be confused or considered a different animal; this would be due to less fat on the body and ( just like there is evidence that paleoindians did) a tendency to wear hides and skulls of other animals (like deer) to hunt more proficiently. I know that you lean away from the more human like hypothesis but there are cases of Sasquatch making knots. Just wanted to get my idea out there....

    • @BillysThreat
      @BillysThreat 2 года назад +2

I know this is 3yrs later but I wanted to say they are not the same. And Sabe do not need to put other animals skin or fur on to hunt or of the likes. The thought you shared is far better than most who attach W to Sabe.
Without being more emerged into Ojibwe beliefs it makes it hard to pass the concept on to someone.

    • @CryptidsandVikings
      @CryptidsandVikings 2 года назад +5

@@BillysThreat I never said I thought they were the same either; and in a mythological sense I too get quite aggravated when they are mixed up. My winter hunting hypothesis is simply a purely scientific explanation to avoid overlapping territories of cryptid species; and not necessarily one I subscribe to in most settings. Being a Cryptozoologist means having one foot in cultural mythology and another in science and so it can be difficult to not step on peoples toes. I also understand that these days, mainly among the Oji-Cree in Quebec, it is again becoming quite taboo to even mention the Ice Cannibals by name and I apologize for any insensitivity coming from my deep interest in the topic.

Tee-tse-kin or Tootooch is the name given by the Barkley Sound Coast Salish Indians to the Thunder Bird, a mighty supernatural bird in Indian mythology. This differs from Raven Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓ and Eagle yəwəla who are understood as actual creatures and also found in totems epitomizing particular characteristics and standing as clan guardians. Sasquatch is also a Salish word and was by no means ever considered a mythological figure, but a flesh and blood tribal relative of the forests. Should we discount the distinctions made by people inhabiting these spaces for thousands of years? That indeed seems foolish. Sorry to appear to mirror your presentation, but I thought other examples are worth noting in addition to your highly relevant point. Thanks for your first rate presentation Bob.

Not a researcher or scientist, just a dude from the woods who loves animals and learning more about nature. First youtube comment too, by the by. I think Sa'be was equated with honesty because it forces your true nature to the surface when you encounter one. Infrasound not withstanding, the fortitude it would take to not run from one of these things in the middle of the woods is crazy to me, and I completely believe that native peoples not only interacted with Sasquatch, but also at some points in time most likely cooperated with them in some sense. So maybe Sa'be was the Ojibwe's living, breathing mash-up of a right of passage and a polygraph test. Also, the apparent intelligence and stoicism of the creatures probably didn't hurt either.
Awesome channel, too. Keep it up man, never encountered someone with your level of enthusiasm and sincerity for the subject matter, who didn't end up sounding a little too fervid to be considered wholly credible.

jolly roger You are too kind!!! I feel so flattered to be asked. Until RUclips gave me the courage, I never spoke of my encounter. Gosh, people will say, that Ginger is bragging again about her "encounter" lol. It's special cuz of how close we were, and how we gazed into each others eyes. We were 4 wheeling in Colorado, Stony pass, when I was 11. I told my dad, when we get down to temberline I need to pee lol. So did my mom. We went into the woods, but soon heard talking and noise, like hikers or a church group, laughing kicking rocks etc. So we were very quiet. We assumed the road must switchback above us. As we were zipping up, I looked in front of me, and there stood a bigfoot, about 15 or 20 feet directly in front of me. We just stared at each other, and I knew immediately that was where the noise had come from, so did my mom. We are outdoors people , and hunted since before I ever came along. I automatically knew to be quiet, and still, I guess from my dad saying hush all the time lol. Mom finally screamed , get, go away, and with a look of shame, it stepped behind a pine, and we ran to the jeep, and my dad had his gun, and was headed for us. We went right back up, but found nothing. We had no idea bigfoot existed, especially in my beloved Colorado. I assumed it lived on Everest or something lol. But being a hunter, I knew and mom knew, we saw a bigfoot. Never thought bear for one second. It had a human face, and was obviously kind. Kind eyes, gentle and angelic. Mom's screaming at it hurt it's feelings, I think. So much expression. We realized that we were in a small patch of trees, and that the talking was not hikers. I heard men , women, and children talking, so did my mom. That is why it did not know we were there. It was as shocked as we were. But, I know they can talk, and laugh. They were having fun! I wonder how many was there? My mom is 78 now, and we still speak about it as a blessing, daily. Over 35 yrs, and not one day without recalling that day. It's life changing experience. Thank you so kindly for letting me tell that story again. I so appreciate your interest, and I hope it didn't bore you. Sorry it's so long hahaha. :) :) :)

This is great stuff. One of the many reasons I like it is because of your organized and clear explanations. At 49 years old I've become much worse at telling a story, following something I'm reading, or understanding directions. What sucks is that as a kid and teenager I was considered (at least it seemed this way from my peers and relatives treatment or me) a very good orator of what I saw, and I was detailed and accurate with what happened without losing the interest of the listener.
Also, there's logic here. That's far more rare these days when it comes to discussions about animals among the public, whether established or cryptids. There's no good excuse for it with the access everyone has through the internet, etc... but maybe the confusion provided by the sheer amount of regurgitated data is causing some to spit out whatever their emotions and bias' allow. Then we have to wade through to find something useful.
    Anyway, this video is great.

I am OGCree Ojibway and cree also part Mohawk! I was told many stories which is way our way instead of writing! Also time of year is important when telling past down tale most tales have truths! Like sqaquatch is way my relatives and mother call sasquatch as u know him and myself! My home is Kenora Ontario Lake of the woods near Grassy narrows! Sasquatch would wander through reservation at night time and can speak they understand Ojibway and other old first nations language depending on living area! Like in Awkasanee reservation my Mohawk side! My cousin and aunty told me they seen sasquatch teleport like!!? A doorway like door opened sasquatch entered and aboy100ft away he appeared again from another doorway! And back to northern Ontario the windigo is well known! Wish I had more time! P.S he is A great spirit BigBrother if the woods protector as well!!!

I'm a follower of the work of David Hawkins and his theories surrounding "Calibration of Consciousness." The human race on this planet, on average now calibrates at approximately 212, which is actually the highest we've collectively measured in a very long time. I calibrate the Sasquatch people at approximately 385, very much more mature and advanced than we are.

Native Americans have been in America for much longer then 13,000 years. I’ve been surrounded by natives my whole life. Many reservations in Northern California where I live. One of my best friends in the world is native and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to speak at lengths with tribal elders and ask as many questions as I could. Their oral traditions and history is beautiful and frankly a slap in the face to say that they’ve only been here 13,000 years. They where and have always been incredibly advanced in many ways, all but tech shit and the industrial revolution, but that is by choice. There’s too much respect in their culture for nature and the earth as a whole to pollute and strip the earth of its natural beauty. Bigfoot is no myth. From the stories I’ve heard there use to be a symbiotic relationship between Sasquatch and native tribes. But when Europeans arrived and started decimating the people and the land they basically went into hiding. Due to the intelligence and natural abilities of these creatures it is very easy for them to go undetected. I got all this secondhand but the people who gave me the information where so somber and serious of the topic. There was no talk of it being anything other than fact. There was a obvious difference between the creatures and any type of myth, legend or any type of tall tale. He explained it to me as if it where a bear or deer or some mundane animal you would see. Only difference was the intelligence and pure ability to go unseen and unnoticed. Unless it wanted you to know it was there. There is no question in my mind weather Sasquatch is a real creature. These are Tribal Elders who are extremely knowledgeable, trusted, respected and looked to for guidance not just through spiritual but real world problems. There not the type of people to tell a lie or a story for the sake of misguiding people.

I find it very convincing that all the native tribes have their own word for Bigfoot and accept it as fact. The fact that western knowledge is based on a relatively mere 500 years experience compared to the 13,000 of the indigenous peoples is compelling and well made. The pronunciation of Llangernyw is understandably somewhat off the mark but most English would struggle too lol - good video

Sabe was named for honesty because they were the ones that gave advice and taught the North American Natives how to live on the land.
When advice was needed the chief would select a few members of their tribes that each had one of the traits of the 7 fathers. They were then instructed by the chief where to travel, how long to travel and where to wait for the Sabe.
One year the tribes beet crops had failed to yield any beets. The chief hand picked 3 members of the tribe by the virtues they possessed and instructed them to journey for 7 days in a certain direction into the Forrest. On the 3rd night of their journey the men made camp. The 3 men were gathered by the fire but had left space for 2 or more visitors. Not long after the moon was highest in the sky 2 Sabe tribe members appeared out of the darkness of the Forrest and joined the 3 tribe members by the fire.
Without a word spoken a Sabe tribesman already knew the answers the men were seeking. Sabe spoke to the 3 men not with his voice but with his mind. He said “The fish in the small waters were sick and poisoned. These were the very fish the Native tribe used as fertilizer on their beet crop. They were instructed to go to the big water find a sand bar and catch 3 fish to fertilize each beet plant and their crop would recover in time for harvest. Then without words all 5 tribesman stood and bit each other safe journeys and love to each other’s tribes.
The following morning the 3 men started home but stopped at The big water they were instructed to go to by the Sabe. This was Lake Hurion (Pardon the spelling of its incorrect.)
The men caught their bounty of fish that day and were back home on the 7th day. They did as Sabe had instructed and fertilized each beet plant with 3 fish each.
At harvest their beet crop was the most bountiful crop they had ever grown.

First I would like to say this is a great channel! One point of grievance as a cultural anthropologist though is that while human settlements in North America go back thousands of years, we certainly do not have reason to think of these settlements as one long continuing culture, even when divided by region. There is significant archaeological and ethnographic evidence pointing to otherwise. It is similar to saying that Europeans have had a consistent culture for 15000 in Europe, which is obviously not true as cultures change and evolve. Great video!
