    When I was applying for my tribal status, I was given a family tree by my paternal aunt. We've traced our family all the way back to Waabajijaak, the White Crane. I had always been told about our lineage, but to see it in actual documentation just made it all feel so much more real. It made me feel confident in my journey to reclaim my Ojibwe culture as a member of the Crane clan. Miigwech, you've helped me so much on this long journey.

    Hi. My daughter is a genealogist. She heard that my many great grandfather was a Scot of the Duncan clan and he married an Ojibwe woman and they went to live in Sweden. She said not to claim the Ojibwe woman as an ancestor yet because she hadn't found any documentation yet. Well, I'm 75 and don't want to wait around. I was so enchanted to know I have an Ojibwe ancestor that I accepted her immediately. I want to know more about the Ojibwe and I have already started learning the Ojibwe language, which is how I found you. I used to live in upper Michigan. I'd like to have a clan that would adopt me even without documentation, but I'm too old to travel now. I live in a residential retirement home in Mississippi now. I am glad you are being such a great teacher and guide. Thank you.

    I wished I knew more about the heritage. I was not accepted by my father’s side of the family. Even today they have nothing to do with me or my sisters. My dad was a member of the First Nation of Ojibwe in California. I’ve tried reaching out to a cousin who lives on Manitoulin Island in Canada. My dad when he was alive would tell me stories of his grandmother. I had a blanket at one time that she had made. He used to make things out of everything. He talked of the teachings. Just wouldn’t know where to start.

    Oh I hope my question reaches you. I’m both Ojibwe and Potawatomi from Muskoka region in Ontario, Canada. My mother is sturgeon clan, my father is non-native. Still not sure if I belong to Sturgeon or Marten 😅 I have looked to see if I can find someone able to perform a shaking tent ceremony to no avail. Maybe you have a few resources or might be able to offer more info in this area?

    • @anton.treuer
      @anton.treuer  10 месяцев назад

      In the Ojibwe custom, you'd be adopted into the Eagle Clan. In the Potawatomi custom, you'd be Sturgeon Clan. I don't think you need a shake tent to sort it out. If you identify primarily as one of those, you can pick. And in keeping with both customs, you can put out a bowl of food and a tobacco offerings and affirm your choice to the spirits.

    This is interesting and complicated. I would like to find out my clan. I from Turtle Mountain. That Ojibwe/Metis culture is blended there. My grandfathers father wasn't a part of his life, so there is that disconnect. But being from a metis background the you go back like 5 or 6 generations down my paternal line you'll run into a Frenchman. Would that be mean I'm more likely from one of those adoptive clans you mentioned? I don't know anyone in Belcourt/Turtle Mountains that do shaking tent ceremonies, so seeking a individual out to ask in the right way has been a challenge. If you have any advise, I'm all ears.

    • @anton.treuer
      @anton.treuer  Год назад

      Spiritually, your daughter could choose either. I’d have a conversation with your partner and move forward together. Some Mohawk ceremonies require seating with a clan section in the longhouse. If the Ojibwe clan doesn’t have representation there and your daughter wants to participate in longhouse I’d consider that. But if you live in Ojibwe country and choose a more Ojibwe ceremony life that’s less of an issue.
