Off road mode with traction OFF. Another reviewer had the best results with those settings.
We did try that as well.
everytime its about to get going you let off the gas
I've done offroad mode and traction off, it seems to work a bit better, not sure why. There's is another review out there where a tech from Mazda recommended it to the reviewer. The rack isn't as noisy as I thought, though coming from an '05 Rubicon with a softtop and no radio anything is quieter. Nice review.
It was painful to watch the CX-50 struggle where any solid 4WD vehicle (Full frame truck style w/ transfer case drivetrain) would've made it no problem. Great video, thanks for sharing!
that's a flat trail vehicle nothing more. I'd take a 4runner over that any day.
Eh this is a luxury car inside. Does great for a luxury car.
Who can afford a 4runner these days@@hookedonfishing2095
I went with the CX-50 turbo premium model. Considered the Meridian, but I wasn't too wild about the hood graphics or that it lacked certain upgrades. As far as off-roading goes, I would guess fire roads and groomed trails/gravel roads would be best, not much beyond that because the CX-50 does not have any skid plates to protect vital components, as far as I can tell.
Oh my. I hope my grandkids don’t try this one. I love how you two interact with each other. Love the roof rack 😅
Off-road mode, traction on and turning off the pre collision system I heard is top notch for getting over obstacles and such.
It seems to me that if Mazda wants this to be more of an off-road (or more accurately, off-pavement) trim level, they should do something with the suspension. Add another 1-2" of ground clearance, improve rough road damping and the like.
Berm Peak? Is that Seth’s bike hacks’ shirt?
You know it!
The fast lane car channel just released a somewhat similar video where the 50 was killer. Interesting, both great vids tho!
For sure! We love Tommy’s roller test. In this case, on this day, on this hill, it didn’t translate.
it's a sponsored video, of course he's going to make it look good. This video is of actual ownership, raw as it gets.
I don't trust TFL anymore..
I also saw a video where the CX5 did better which my wife has. Aside from that better tires and approach angle would have changed things a lot. Thanks for the review.
99% of all compact suvs have failed this test. I actually think the cx 50 was far much better compared to all the others i have watched.
Would really love to find out how the 2013-2018 manual CX-5 would do on that crossover bypass hill.
A little disappointed, I was really hoping it would do better. I still love the CX-50 though =)
chick car for sure, a pick the kids up and take them to practice vehicle.
@@hookedonfishing2095 How many idiotic comments have you posted here - did some guy with a Mazda take your girl? Lmao
I’m so glad you didn’t fall, Craig. Yikes!!! 😱
What camera and wireless microphone setup are you using??
Didn't the CX-9 complete the hybrid line with no problem? Wonder if the AWD system is different in those 2 cars.
I would love one of these if they had 1 inch (or more) of head room, as it is it's just too cramped for me.
I feel you on that. But I’m stuck with the car for at least 4 years lol need to pay off the deficiency between loan balance and car value.
Weird. You guys had the 2023 CX5 that went up that hill no problem. Same AWD system
Good observation. We think the 50 struggled due to the wet/softer surface.
no excuses. that was a pretty dried out trail

Mazda does have a setting that can turn on the notification if you are pushing both the accelerator and the brake at the same time. Thankfully it is an option and isn’t on automatically. Appreciate the video guys. I’ve seen several with different outcomes, most finishing with praise for what the vehicle is… Which isn’t really that off-road focussed as far as challenging obstacles go. I respect the video though for sure.
Thanks for checking out our video, we had high hopes for the cx50 as the cx5 surprised us. The reality is that our hill test has become more challenging and nearly all CUV’s struggle with the main and hybrid line. We are working on some modifications to balance it out. Stay tuned!
@@TexasTruckChannelamazing I’ll keep a lookout!
oh and I found online that the rails themselves can handle 600 pounds, and that the cross bars currently on there can handle 165 pounds.
Awesome, that’s good intel. Thanks for sharing 👍
2:03 thank you.
Why is no one talking about the payload capacity 850 just seems too low especially if driving with 2 big guys
Thought it was 1000-1100
The weight rating for the roof rack is 165lbs.
where is the torque going? Above 300 and cannot go up that little course? I´m confused.
Oh this puppy has all of the torque. Just not all of the traction on this day, on this hill.
They trying to compete with the Outback
The outback wins hands down..
in the ugly department. Enjoy that cvt
@@chordinates7268ya I switched from Subaru to Mazda. No regrets
Pathetic but thanks for confirming for me!
This thing is STRUGGLING....👎pass on this "awd".
Go watch a Honda Nissan or Toyota do this same course. Mazda AWD is much better.
It looked weak and pathetic. Huge waste of money. Spend 5k on a older, proper 4x4 that will easily get the job done.
@@warriorhealth2172 why would you compare it to a real 4x4? This is a compact crossover. Go watch everything else in the class and you will see this performs far better. You also probably didn’t even make it to the point in the video where they used the offroad mode which significantly reduce wheel spin.
Ill stick with my jeep liberty. 37 approach, 34 departure, 22 departure, 9.4 ground clearance on 29 with a 16 in wheel and a two speed transfer case. When a car manufacturer going to learn that 18/22 inch wheels are the worst thing for offroading, you need that extra sidewall height. Plus a two speed transfer case is helpful in maintaining control in many trail situations, including less stresson the engine and yransmission.
Please try these tests with a 2010 Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin with V8 and navigation package. 😎💙👍👍

If we can find one, we will
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
pitiful
Get some muddterrains and you would make it up
No question about that!
thats not an off road vehicle lmao a CRV has more ground clearance than that.
Outback Wilderness has a ground clearance of 9.5 inches and a standard front skid plate, regular Outback has 8.7, CX 50 Meridian is at 8.6. It’s actually just fine for most trail driving, probably just as good as a forester/Outback while having much better acceleration, a luxury interior and being fun to drive on paved roads. There aren’t many alternatives to it on the market in North America. Most people don’t need overland-capable vehicles.
Mazda isn't doing too well, maybe you need a Subaru 😂
I want one WITHOUT the stupid TURBO-- turbos are a crock- they wear the engines out sooner- cause the oil to need changing more and have to be watched closely for burning.. and I'm getting a SUPERCHARGER put on mine.. (they make one specificallly is for this particular engine)... and install a 1.5 inch lift kit too.. Supercharger is INFINITELY better-- no lag ever, much more boost and it's JUST AIR-- so you don't overheat the engine or oil- or chance getting hot enough to melt the plastic parts etc.. and the power comes in with correct ratio to the pedal movement.
This isn't true anymore unless you yourself are putting a turbo on an engine that was not engineered for the turbo. All engines that come with a turbo are meant for it, they don't just slap a turbo on the exact same engine as the one you find in the NA cx-50. Also, a supercharger will put as much wear and tear on your engine as a turbo does... so kind of ironic.
you're putting a supercharger on a Mazda crossover lol
@@mikebracco890 ALREADY been done 3 times dude and it works GREAT.. it's a gentle boost over the full range of pedal- NOW a power blower like a race car... works super well.. NO heat issues- and the mpg stays within 1 gallone of projected... and no hard wear on the engine.
@@davidwayne9982 thats not my point. its a budget crossver not a project car
YES it is... true - the run LONGER without issues IF - I F taken care of properly- but most don't and issues are VERY expensive to fix. Supercharge doesn't HAVE those issues and if it quits working- take the belt off and run without it til you get it going and it works like NORMAL- not so with turbo.@@vindictiv6880
I bet the front bumper gets yanked off on the first real deal off road trail. garbage
